120/Valpar aíso Pabellón / Pavilion

Un pabellón que debía ser lo suficientemente icónico como para transformarse en el símbolo de una celebración, y a la vez lo suficientemente dúctil como para ser desmontado y trasladado con facilidad. Una esfera inflable y un basamento en base a la repetición circular de un elemento plegable de madera resuelven el problema de proyecto, permitiendo que este pabellón fuese montado en Santiago y Valparaíso, cambiando su nombre pero no sus cualidades arquitectónicas.

A pavilion that needed to be iconic enough in order to become the symbol of a celebration, while remaining adequately ductile to be easily dismantled and relocated. An inflatable sphere and a foundation based on the circular repetition of a folding wooden element solve the project’s problem, allowing this pavilion to be assembled in Santiago and Valparaíso, changing its name but not its architectural features.

El encargo consistió en realizar un pabellón para celebrar los 120 años de la fundación de la Escuela de Arquitectura de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile que primero sería instalado en el campus de la facultad y, posteriormente, sería trasladado a otros sitios para ser reutilizado como espacio de exhibición. En este sentido, el encargo tenía dos aspectos: uno de orden material asociado a la implementación física, y otro de orden inmaterial o simbólico ligado al tipo de espacio apropiado para llevar a cabo un encuentro o acto solemne como este. En relación a lo primero, la implementación debía cumplir con los siguientes requerimientos: uno, que pudiera ser desmontado y montado en muchos sitios; y dos, que pudiera acoger conferencias y muestras. En atención a estas necesidades se propuso realizar el proyecto a partir de la repetición de un módulo de madera de 5 metros de altura que, al igual que una silla de playa, pudiera ser desplegado para su uso y, luego, plegado para su traslado. Con el objeto de generar un espacio estable al empuje y las condiciones necesarias para realizar conferencias y muestras, este módulo se multiplicó 36 veces en torno a un eje de rotación para generar un podio con forma de anillo de 14 metros de diámetro y 5 metros de altura que contuviera hacia el exterior un deambulatorio asociado a las exhibiciones y hacia el interior, un asiento corrido ligado a las conferencias. La cubierta de esta argolla de madera se realizó con una esfera inflable de pvc de 12 metros de diámetro que, junto con cubrir e iluminar el espacio, actuó como signo que anunciaba el pabellón. The commission consisted in developing a pavilion to celebrate the 120 years since the foundation of the School of Architecture of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, which was first to be installed in the faculty’s campus and later moved to other locations to be reused as an exhibition space. In this sense the commission had two main aspects: first, a material concern associated with its physical implementation, and second, the immaterial or symbolic aspect connected to the question for the proper type of space to celebrate a reunion or solemn act such as this. Regarding the first, the implementation needed to comply with the following requirements: firstly, that it could be assembled and disassembled in many different locations, and secondly, that it could host conferences and exhibitions. In response to these needs, the project was designed based on the repetition of a wooden modular unit, 5 meters high, which like a folding beach chair could be deployed for use and then folded for transportation and storage. In order to generate on one side, a steady and stable space and on the other, to create the necessary conditions to host conferences and exhibitions, this module was repeated 36 times around a rotation axis so that a ring-shaped podium of 14 meters in diameter and 5 meters high is produced, containing a circular corridor for exhibitions towards the exterior, and a circular bench for conferences towards the interior. The cover of this wooden ring is provided by a PVC inflatable sphere with a diameter of 12 meters which, while covering and illuminating the space, acts as a sign, announcing the pavilion from a distance. durante estos 120 años de existencia de la Escuela de Arquitectura uc y hace referencia explícita a la larga tradición de construir monumentos mediante la utilización de formas platónicas. Tras la celebración de los 120 años y en el contexto de la xi x Bienal de Arquitectura y Urbanismo, el pabellón, esta vez bajo el nombre Pabellón Valparaíso, fue trasladado a las ruinas del Palacio Subercaseaux en Valparaíso para acoger 64 proyectos de estudiantes y profesores de las Escuelas de Arquitectura de la Universidad de Chile, Universidad de Valparaíso, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso y Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile que, en conjunto, propusieron un proyecto común para el borde costero de la ciudad de Valparaíso. 120 years of existence at the School of Architecture UC, and makes explicit reference to a long tradition of building monuments by using platonic shapes. After the celebration of the 120 years and in the context of the XIX Chilean Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism, the pavilion, this time under the name of Valparaíso Pavilion, was moved to the ruins of the Subercaseaux Palace in Valparaíso to host 64 student and teachers’ projects from the Schools of Architecture of the Universidad de Chile, Universidad de Valparaíso, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, and Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, who in collaboration proposed a common view for the waterfront of the city of Valparaíso.
