SUMMER

ESCAPES By Steven John Carlo Sevilla

As summer gets underway the heat rises in Dubai and parents are on the lookout for activities to keep the whole family entertained. The Museum of Illusions in Dubai’s Al Seef is a 3D exhibition filled with optical trickery and bizarre sensory experiences from anti-gravity rooms to an infinity tunnel and a clone table where you take a seat and multiply in the mirrors. It is one of the many attractions in the city available to parents to keep their children cool throughout the summer. Also located at the City Walk, Hub Zero is home to numerous interactive and immersive virtual reality worlds that will give you an action-packed adventure unlike any other. Whether you’re a gaming enthusiast or new to VR, Hub Zero is not to be missed. From jumping in a Resident Evil interactive dark ride to attacking your enemies in a VR shooting game, embarking on a 3D adventure, and more, the excitement is plenty in this indoor tech playground.

If the scorching heat is really getting to you, would you believe us if we said you can experience a magical winter right in the throes of summer? In comes Ski Dubai, the world’s largest indoor snow park located conveniently in the Mall of Emirates! Spend a cold winter day in the middle of the desert with activities like bobsledding, tobogganing, and more. There’s even a penguin show that is just too cute to believe. You don’t even have to worry about packing or dressing appropriately because your ticket includes all the necessary winter garb and you’ll even get to keep the gloves and socks!

BURJ AL ARAB By Steven John Carlo Sevilla

The Burj Al Arab – translating as “the Arabian Tower” – was designed by architect Tom Wright in October 1993 and the magnificent sail-shaped property was completed by November 1999, just in time for the millennium. This iconic landmark is up there with the Sydney Opera House and the Empire State Building in New York. It stands at 321m (1,053ft) high, supported by 250 columns, making it the tallest all-suite hotel in the world. Talking of records, in 2008, the Burj Al Arab broke the Guinness World Record for the most expensive cocktail, valued at AED 27,321 (£5,424) and the world’s largest tin of caviar in 2016.

Did King Midas stay here and run riot touching everything? We don’t know, but everything is dripping in gold; there’s even an 18 karat goldplated iPad in every suite. Expect king size beds with a 17-option pillow menu, televisions that rise at the push of a button from decorative cabinets and bathrooms with ornate whirlpool tubs, walk-in showers, gold-plated taps and Hermès toiletries. The Royal Suite boasts two master bedrooms, a grand curved staircase, cinema room, full-size snooker table and private dining fit for 12 guests.

Dubai, also spelled Dubayy, city and capital of the emirate of Dubai. one of the wealthiest of the seven emirates that constitute the federation of the United Arab Emirates, which was created in 1971 following independence from Great Britain. There are several theories about the origin of the name Dubai. One associates it with the daba—a type of locust that infests the area—while another holds that it refers to a market that existed near the city.

DUBAI IS A CITY OF SKYSCRAPERS, PORTS, AND BEACHES, WHERE BIG BUSINESS TAKES PLACE ALONGSIDE SUN-SEEKING TOURISM. BECAUSE OF ITS LARGE EXPATRIATE POPULATION, IT FEELS LIKE A MIDDLE EASTERN MELTING POT, AND THE ATMOSPHERE IS GENERALLY TOLERANT. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATIONS ARE NOT A PROMINENT ASPECT OF CITY LIFE. ISLAM IS THE MAJORITY RELIGION, BUT CHURCHES AND HINDU TEMPLES COEXIST WITH DUBAI’S MOSQUES.DUBAI IS A RELATIVELY CRIME-FREE PLACE WHERE ADMINISTRATIVE EFFICIENCY AND OPENNESS TO BUSINESS HAVE ENCOURAGED ASTOUNDING GROWTH. HOWEVER, CRITICISM OF DUBAI’S AUTHORITARIAN GOVERNMENT AND RULING ELITE IS NOT TOLERATED, AND THERE PERSISTS AN ATMOSPHERE OF DISCREET CORRUPTION.THE WESTERN AREA OF DUBAI BENEFITS FROM SMALL STRETCHES OF SANDY BEACHES, WHICH HAVE HELPED TO CATALYZE THE CITY’S TOURISM INDUSTRY. DUBAI’S RULERS HAVE SOUGHT TO INCREASE THE CITY’S LIMITED SEAFRONTS, AND, IN THE ABSENCE OF NATURAL OFFSHORE ISLANDS, DEVELOPERS WERE ENCOURAGED TO CONSTRUCT GIANT MAN-MADE ISLANDS OFF THE COAST OF THE CITY. THE MOST FAMOUS OF THESE IS PALM JUMEIRAH, WHICH HAS THE SHAPE OF A PALM TREE. OTHERS INCLUDE THE “WORLD” ISLANDS, A CLUSTER OF SMALL ISLANDS POSITIONED TO RESEMBLE A WORLD MAP WHEN VIEWED FROM ABOVE.
