ADMIRAL GRAF SPEE Tras el tratado de Versalles de 1918, Alemania tenía estrictos límites a la hora de construir sus barcos. Sin embargo, eso provocó que se hicieran diseños muy innovadores y una nueva forma de producción. El resultado fue los tres Panzerschiffe de la clase Deutschland, llamados Deutschland, Admiral Scheer y Admiral Graf Spee. Se construyeron entre 1929 y 1936, cumpliendo la limitación de 10.000t y el dicho “más fuerte que el enemigo más rápido, más rápido que el enemigo más fuerte”. El casco del Admiral Graf Spee se botó en junio de 1934. Su nombre provenía de Maximilian von Spee, que en 1914 había sido comandante de la flota de Asia Oriental. Después de una victoriosa batalla contra el Coronel inglés, se hundió con su barco y tripulación en las islas Falkland ,en el mes de diciembre. El nuevo barco con este nombre entró en servicio el 6 de enero de 1936 como buque insignia de la flota. Tras los habituales ejercicios, se destinó al Atlántico y en agosto ya entró en activo en la costa española, como consecuencia de la guerra civil española. En agosto de 1937, el Graf Spee ya había participado en 4 misiones, con la marca negra, blanca y roja en las torretas de cañones de 280mm. Durante las celebraciones por la coronación de George VI, el Graf Spee formó parte de una exposición universal de barcos famosos, como el Hood. A lo largo de los siguientes años llevó a cabo misiones de instrucción y representación, que lo llevaron a Suecia, Noruega, Marruecos y Portugal, entre otros destinos. En 1938, se instaló un radar en el mástil y se cambió la disposición de las luces. A las órdenes del capitán Hans Langsdorff, el Graf Spee abandonó Wilhekmshaven el 21 de agosto de 1938, hacia el sur del Atlántico. Cuando estalló la Segunda Guerra Mundial, hundió al Clement, un barco de vapor que fue su primer objetivo inglés. Abastecido por el barco Altmark, persiguió y hundió 10 barcos más. En aquella época, con el fin de ocultar la verdadera identidad del barco, solía cambiarse la pintura y se instalaban superestructuras falsas en la cubierta. El 13 de diciembre de 1939, el Graf Spee encontró una flota de cruceros ingleses, que incluía el crucero pesado Exeter y los ligeros Ajax y Achilles, en la desembocadura del Río de la Plata. Aunque consiguió escapar, tuvo que anclar en el puerto neutral de Montevideo para que lo repararan. Allí se enterraron a 36 víctimas de la tripulación y otros 60 hombres tuvieron que ser atendidos. Sin conocer las actividades del enemigo y el barco en malas condiciones, Langsdorff se vio obligado a zarpar el 17 de diciembre, debido a intrigas diplomáticas. En secreto, había despedido a la mayor parte de la tripulación y, con los pocos que quedaban, el 20 de diciembre hundió su propio barco estando él mismo a bordo. Últimamente, el Admiral Graf Spee ha recibido mucha atención, pues unos empresarios uruguayos han afirmado que desean recuperar partes del barco hundido.

ADMIRAL GRAF SPEE After the Treaty of Versailles in 1918, German ship-building was subjected to strict sanctions which, however, led to the development of innovative designs and to new ways of production in the German shipyards. The outstanding result of these efforts were the three Panzerschiffe (armoured ships) of the DEUTSCHLAND class, designated „DEUTSCHLAND“ (re-named „LÜTZOW“ in 1939), „ADMIRAL SCHEER“ and „ADMIRAL GRAF SPEE“. They were built between 1929 and 1936 in compliance with the imposed restrictions as 10,000 ton „pocket battleships“ and were in line with the motto „stronger than faster enemies and faster than stronger ones“. Laid down in 1932 on the navy shipyard at Wilhelmshaven, the hull of the ADMIRAL GRAF SPEE was launched in June 1934. Its namesake Maximilian von Spee had in 1914 been commander of the German East Asian fleet, however, after a victorious battle against the British off Coronel, he went down valiantly with his ship and crew off the Falkland Islands in December. The new ship bearing his name was commissioned on 6 January 1936 as the new flagship of the fleet. The usual series of exercises was succeeded by deployment to the Atlantic and already in August by first operational duties as a consequence of the Spanish Civil War off the Spanish coastline. By August 1937, the GRAF SPEE had participated in four actions there, wearing the black, white and red-striped colour scheme on its 280mm main gun turrets. On occasion of the celebrations accompanying the coronation of King George VI, the GRAF SPEE took part in an international naval review at Spithead shipyard in May, where it was on display together with the HOOD and other famous ships of this time. The ensuing years were dominated by training- and representation duties which sent the ship to Sweden, Norway, Morocco and Portugal amongst other destinations. In 1938, a radar set was fitted to the mast and the arrangement of the lights altered. Under its commander Kapitän zur See Hans Langsdorff, the GRAF SPEE left Wilhelmshaven on 21 August 1938 for the southern Atlantic. Following the outbreak of the Second World War and the release for operational service, it sank its first British target, a steamer named „CLEMENT“, off Pernambuco. Supplied by the fuel ship ALTMARK, it hunted down and sank 10 more ships with a total of 50,000 gross register tons in the Indian Ocean and the southern Atlantic. In order to conceal the true identitiy of the ship in those weeks, the paint scheme was frequently changed and on-deck dummy superstructures used. On 13 December 1939, the GRAF SPEE encountered a British cruiser fleet comprising the heavy cruiser EXETER and the light cruisers AJAX and ACHILLES under Commodore Harwood off the mouth of the Rio de la Plata. Although the GRAF SPEE was able to successfully break off from the ensuing action, it was forced to head for the neutral harbour of Montevideo for repairs. 36 members of crew were buried there and 60 injured crew members had to receive medical attention. With no knowledge about the activities of the enemy, with the ship barely patched up but forced by diplomatic intrigue, Langsdorff had to leave the harbour on 17 December 1939. Secretly he dismissed the largest part of his crew and with a remaining few, he sank his own ship. He drew his personal conclusions of the situation by taking his life on 20 December. Lately, the wreck of the ADMIRAL GRAF SPEE has again become a focal point of public interest after the announcement of Uruguayan entrepreneurs that they plan to raise large parts of the sunken ship.
