WORKSHOPS

COLLECTIVE MAGAZINE

Issue n01

THE “WHY” This monthly magazine is born as our endeavour to help English go beyond the classroom walls. During almost 30 years we, teachers at the Aspen Tree, have read and indulged in sometimes thought-provoking, sometimes moving pieces of writing. We strongly feel those writings deserve more readers. Thus, we hope you readers can see the value of these productions and enrich yourselves as much as we have during all this time. This first edition contains pieces inspired by our initial monthly communication workshop, English live. Perhaps, yours may appear in future editions and together we can build a space of reflection, creativity, expression , exchange and ultimately of growth. Thank you writers and readers. Love, Andrea

Still Life with Irises, Morning Glory, Fox Gloves, a Red Lily and Other Flowers on a Forest Floor - Alida Withoos

You came in like the ocean during a hail rain storm Big waves and big words Swerved in the wind as I walked by your side Trying to remain small For a girl should never make a sound. You made plans and looked in the future While I reflected on the feelings I knew you were fighting down. Suddenly thunder stopped And you were staring at me Asking me to step up For my thoughts and my dreams And when I finally did so You showed me a warm smile And even cried from laughter In front of everyone. I became a storm When you asked me to And you showed me a meadow With wildflowers and a safe roof. You came in like a storm And I gave you shelter And when I turned into a hurricane Your tenderness saved me. Shall I not find another time Please do not forget I´m so grateful for the way Our energies interlace.

Yes,

I´m complaining

´Oh, and what about us? Aren't we victims also?¨ I can't even begin to explain how many times I´ve heard those two infuriating questions. Every time. Why can't I talk about feminism and our struggles as women in a patriarchal society, without men having to victimize themselves? My beliefs and views on civilization are just as valid as yours, so, for once, stop talking and listen. When we, as women , try and express how difficult it is to go through life being constantly diminished because of our gender, men just reinforce that reality. Should we even intend to change it, they become victims. Of course, there's also the popular expressions of : ¨you´re being too radical, too much of a feminist, too emotional¨ Yes, I am, but that doesn't make it any less truthful. What I'm trying to say is I wish we could have an enriching conversation regardless of our gender like rational equal human beings we are. And yes, I´m complaining.
