Director of Football

MARIJN BEUKER Good evening and welcome to Ochilview for tonight’s match. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our supporters to the game. We really appreciate the effort you are all continuing to make to get to these matches, away from home, even more so when it is a midweek match. Your support makes a big difference! I would also like to extend a warm welcome to Dougie Imrie, his Greenock Morton side and everyone associated with the club. As I said in Saturday’s programme notes, it continues to be an exciting time for the club both on and off the pitch and it was excellent to see us pick up another three points and keep a clean sheet against Raith Rovers. Off the pitch we are delighted to have Thomas Ruesink start with us, taking up the position of

Head of Children’s Programme. This is an exciting and important appointment for the club and important position in terms of the organisation of the football department. It’s very pleasing to be in able to capture someone of Thomas’ stature and ability for this role, he is an expert in the development of children programmes. Thomas will be responsible for leading age groups U14’s and below. Over the coming weeks we hope to continue to add more to the footballing department in order to fill key roles. Looking ahead to tonight’s match, as always, I hope it’s an enjoyable night for you and of course that we pick up all three points. Enjoy the match! MB

QPFC v RRFC

MATCH REPORT Queen’s Park defeated visitors Raith Rovers 1-0 thanks to Stephen Eze’s first goal in Scottish football. The Spiders started with the same XI that finished their recent league success at Hamilton Accies with Tommy Robson, Johnny Kenny and Simon Murray returning to the lineup after not featuring in last Sunday’s 3-2 win at Cliftonville. Raith had a number of familiar faces in their ranks with former Queen’s players Ross Millen, Aidan Connolly and Connor McBride all kicking off the game with Jamie Gullan on the bench. Queen’s looked to start at a fast pace and in the first minute Grant Savoury released Murray on the right and the skipper fired over a dangerous low cross however there were no takers. Raith were no slouches either and they came within an inch of taking the lead before three minutes had been played. Kyle Connell slipped a pass to Sam Stanton at the edge of the box and the one-time Hibs man turned and sent a fierce shot curling past Calum Ferrie only to see his effort strike the inside of a post and bounce across the home goalmouth.

The Kirkcaldy men continued on the front foot and a cross fizzed into the Queen’s box with the hosts grateful to a flicked header from Lee Kilday that saw the ball go out for a throwin on the other side. Stanton danced his way towards Ferrie’s goal on 12 minutes and appeared to lose his footing before he shot and when he recovered and fired for goal, he found his pathway blocked. It was Dom Thomas’ time to show some fancy footwork three minutes later as he looked to test Jamie MacDonald in the visitors goal after a darting run but like Stanton he was crowded out. Savoury was released by Jack Thomson shortly afterwards with the striker earning a corner when his drive was deflected over.

On 21 minutes Eze came within inches of his first goal for the club when he rose and met a Savoury corner only to see his header flash less than a foot wide. Midway through the half a promising break for Queen’s was halted by referee Irvine after Raith’s Scott Brown looked to have suffered a head knock. The visiting skipper was quickly back on his feet and after play resumed, Ferrie had to carefully watch a cross as he looked to sneak in at his back post. MacDonald was called back into action just before the half-hour mark as he smothered a low Murray shot with Brown firing wide of the home goal in the following minute. MacDonald was called back into action just before the half-hour mark as he smothered a low Murray shot with Brown firing wide of the home goal in the following minute. Thomas and Murray combined to tee up Savoury 20 yards out 12 minutes from the break and his low drive looked to have the beating of

MacDonald however it flashed past the wrong side of a post. On 42 minutes a fine flowing passing move from the visitors that started on the right wing resulted in Liam Dick being released on the other flank and his dinked cross to the back post was asking to be put in however Malachi Boateng arrived on time to head clear. Just before the break Savoury curled in one of his trade-mark 20-yard free kicks and just when the ball looked set to nestle in the top corner MacDonald leapt up high to produce a fine one-handed save. Early into the restart Raith broke, after it looked like Kenny had been fouled, and Connell was given a glimpse of goal but thankfully Ferrie dived down to save. Eze won another header from a Savoury corner however the ball sailed harmlessly over. On 53 minutes Ferrie leapt to his left to produce a fine stop to keep out a curling Connell effort that looked destined for the far corner. The deadlock was broken six minutes later and Eze got his goal. Dom Thomas whipped over a corner from the right and Eze was perfectly placed to nod home from close range with the towering expectant father placing the ball under his jersey as part of his celebrations

Connolly tried his luck from long distance with a free-kick just after the hour mark with Ferrie able to watch it clear his bar by some distance. Queen’s came close from a corner again on 67 minutes with this time Savoury crossing from the left and Kilday heading against the woodwork. Five minutes later Jake Davidson charged forward on the right, in Jake Davidson style, however his shot failed to find the target. With 15 minutes to go the Spiders survived a scare as Stanton ran clear on the right with the sliding Connell just an inch away from turning in his low cross.

Brown sent a shot flashing wide of Ferrie’s goal and Quinn Coulson saw an effort deflected over before Thomas forced MacDonald into a super stop with a drive from 10 yards. Savoury twisted and turned with two minutes left before sending a shot sliding past MacDonald’s goal. In injury time Raith thought they had equalised twice, however goalline clearances and the bar denied them. A header from Millen looped over Ferrie however Savoury nodded off the line and when Connor O’Riordan sent another header goalward Kilday was able to clear that one via the bar.

TOUCHDOWN CHELSEA! Chelsea’s new American owner, Todd Boehly, provoked much ire and derision when he told an American audience of his suggestions of improvements for the English Premiership that included an “all-star” game such as is very popular in American sports. If anyone else had proposed this, it would have been laughed off or ignored, but then the UK does seem to have a bit of a problem with Americans coming over here and giving us advice. On anything. Of course, he comes from a perspective of the big American sports not having an international dimension, so not having very much in the way of representative games. He’ll soon learn about the importance of things like the World Cup, the Euros and all the European club competitions, all of which baseball and gridiron simply can’t have. Their dearly loved domestic games haven’t really caught on in anywhere except where there is a strong American influence and, even then, baseball in South Korea or Japan is nowhere near good enough for their teams to tackle the US clubs with any semblance of competitiveness. I sometimes think that Americans, conversely, don’t embrace sports with a worldwide appeal because they struggle to be the best at them. Better to promote your internal games than be made to be second best by wee tin pot countries with the erse hingin’ oot their shorts, eh?

Laugh it off if you will, but this new breed of American owner, whether an individual or a consortium, isn’t in English football for anything other than self-centred reasons. The statebacked clubs like Newcastle and Manchester City can have a level of confidence that their owners are not in the English game to make money. They’ve got it skooshing out their ears; money is simply not a factor. They want to portray their dodgy regimes as not dodgy. If nothing else, one mitigation of their involvement in the British game is that they won’t be trying to shake things up. They want to be good, if very well-heeled, guests. Of course, the English game does have American owners who keep a low profile, and who may not want to change the English game, but perhaps Boehly will be at the vanguard of the more brash type of owner that America seems to produce so easily. And spare a thought for Manchester

United, that money-making juggernaut that is being denuded of their cash by their US owners with the result that they are strictly bit part players in the Premiership. Scudded 6-3 by their rivals at the weekend (the second time that City have taken six off them) and showing little sign of mounting a challenge at the top. Probably no team in the world can count so much on the masses shelling out for their first, second, third and fourth tops at £90 a pop, but United will never be back at the top until that cash is actually invested in the team rather than sooked out by their lovable owners. Such is the English game that success will only come at the price of selling your soul. Germany has a very admirable policy of having fan ownership (with a few exceptions), but their sides do not have the pre-eminence that they once had. They are resisting the takeover of their clubs by conglomerates, but the emergence of Red Bull Leipzig and Hoffenheim, who have massive financial input from outwith their fanbase, is perhaps a taste of things to come. And Italy; surely no nation’s clubs are so needy of investors with unlimited income to compete in European competition? And Real Madrid and Barcelona? They are still fighting the good fight for the financial saviour that will be the European Super League. They are in such financial distress that only a self-perpetuating invitation-only competition will keep their bloated, debt-riddled clubs in contention at

the top. Or…. perhaps football could learn to live within their means and perhaps accept that paying a player £350,000 a week to sulk on the bench (the charmless Mesut Ozil at Arsenal) is nonsense? He can be just as sulky on his current salary of £80,000 a week elsewhere, a salary that still gives him the lifestyle of a king. Surely that’s enough for any person? Football does need a readjustment. But it’s a readjustment that won’t be coming along; the genie is out of the bottle. Football is so important and high profile that big money and big egos will continue to look to move into the ownership of the game. The big salaries will continue to be paid and we, as consumers, will continue to consume and contribute because we love it and we’re prepared to be financially done up like a kipper. Queen’s Park 2 Celtic 1

ON THIS DAY

SATURDAY 4TH OCTOBER 1902 On this day 120 years ago, Queen’s Park faced Celtic at Hampden Park in a Scottish League First Division fixture. Although it was only early October, this was the third time in the season that the clubs had met. They had drawn 1-1 in a league match at Parkhead in early September and Celtic had won 2-1 in a Glasgow Cup tie at Hampden.

were first to score. Andrew McNair in the Queen’s goal saved well from Jimmy Quinn but the ball rebounded to Johnny Campbell who blasted the ball into the net from close range. Midway through the half, Dugald Macnab equalised for the Spiders with a tremendous shot. There was no further scoring in the first period. Celtic had played the better football but Queen’s had been determined and resilient.

Unbeaten Celtic were firm favourites to win this second league match of the season between the sides but the Spiders were always capable of pulling off unexpected victories. The game attracted a good crowd of 12,000 to the classic slopes of Hampden Park on a fine autumn afternoon.

Andrew McNair The result was a great boost for Queen’s Park, after a sticky start to the season, but a blow to Celtic’s title aspirations. The two teams that afternoon at Hampden were: -

Alex Currie

The first half of the match was fairly even. Johnny Campbell missed a good early chance for the visitors and Tom Bowie and Alex Currie, a new signing from Stewarton, both went close for Queen’s Park. Celtic

bombarded the Queen’s goal for all they were worth but, with Andrew McNair in fine form, the Spiders’ defence stood firm and the match ended in a famous 2-1 victory.

Queen’s Park set off at great pace after the interval and took the lead in 50 minutes through a fine Tom Bowie shot. The Spiders continued to dominate for the following five minutes or so but Celtic then began to take charge. Queen’s were confined to their own half for much of the remaining time as the Parkhead’s side’s superior fitness and skill began to tell. In the final ten minutes, Celtic

Queen’s Park’s second and third teams were also in action on this day. The Strollers beat St Johnstone ‘A’

6-0 in a Scottish Second Eleven Cup tie in Perth. The Hampden Eleven had a 2-0 victory over Captain Colt’s XI. I have no idea who Captain Colt was. Tonight’s opponents Morton were also in First Division action on this day. The Greenock men were at home to Partick Thistle and twice came from a goal down to earn a draw. Jimmy Russell put Morton ahead but goals from John Muirhead and Sam Kennedy gave Thistle the lead. Robert Stewart equalised for the Ton but Bob Gray soon made the score 3-2 for the Jags. Bob Roberts then delighted the home fans in the crowd of 5,000 with a fine goal to make the final score Morton 3 Partick Thistle 3. The day’s results left Queen’s Park in 10th position in the 12-club First Division, with 5 points from 7 games. Morton were 11th, with 4 points from 8 games. Hibernian were league leaders, with Dundee in second place. Nothing much had changed by the end of the season. Hibs were champions, Dundee were second and Queen’s Park were tenth. Morton had dropped to bottom spot, a place below local rivals Port Glasgow Athletic. There was no automatic relegation at that time and the Greenock men remained in the First Division in the following season. nd memorable experiences. By Frank McCrossan

PARTICK THISTLE – 22 OCTOBER We won’t be running a bus for this one. COVE – FRIDAY 4TH NOVEMBER This game has been chosen for live TV coverage, hence the date change. We hope to run a bus but that will be dependent on numbers. The distance involved means a big cost for us, so we do need definite bookings at least a week beforehand to see if running it is feasible. Ideally, we do want you there to support the team in person, but we cannot afford to run the bus at a huge loss.

I would like to put on record my thanks to our sponsors for their support; it is very much appreciated. Anyone else who would be interested coming on board with the Supporters’ Association can contact John Richmond; see contact details below. 07787 422082

60 CLUB

SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION CHARITY

Thankfully, the response to the resurrection of the 60 Club has been very positive and the first draw for £100 will be made this coming weekend, so you still have time to join up on Saturday at the Raith game. It costs £40 for the season and you can pay this up monthly if you wish. I’m the guy to contact with your stakes and I’ll be at the Association table just inside the home turnstiles.

The Supporters’ Association is delighted to announce that Epilepsy Scotland will be the Association’s chosen charity for season 22/23. Epilepsy Scotland is a very worthwhile charity who support people who suffer from this neurological condition. There are over fifty thousand people in Scotland who suffer from the condition.

ASSOCIATION MEMBERSHIP

Epilepsy Scotland will be in attendance at one of our home league fixtures during the season which will coincide with the Epilepsy purple day. Details about this will be announced nearer the time.

We’d like to thank people who kept up their Association membership over the COVID period. Hopefully we can bring numbers up to pre-COVID levels and we will have a stall set up just inside the home turnstiles for those who wish to join up, collect their cards or to book spaces on the buses. The response so far has been (I’m glad to say) quite overwhelming. We appreciate your support.

WIN A SIGNED JERSEY

The winners of the signed shirts for joining either the Supporters’ Association or the 60 Club by the end of August are: Supporters’ Association – Rae Anne Cameron; 60 Club – Neil Chisholm.

MANAGER: Dougie Imrie began his career with a local Junior side Lanark United making 138 appearances and scoring 77 goals. Clyde signed him in 2006 and he then went onto play for clubs such as Inverness, St Mirren and Morton. He had two spells with Hamilton making over 200 appearances for the Accies. During his second spell with the Accies he began coaching the Under 17s along with Darian MacKinnon and they won the Scottish Championship in their age group and qualified for the UEFA Youth League. In 2021, Dougie Imrie was announced as a first team coach with Livingston before joining Morton as manager in 2021.

The Spiders travelled to Greenock in the League Cup in 2020 in only the second game of that season after the lay-off. Queen’s Park got the game underway and instantly went on the attack with Will Baynham heading wide from a Tommy Robson cross. Straight up the other end and Luca Colville went close with Muir forced to make a strong save. Gillespie then went close, but his effort was deflected for a corner. It had been a frantic start to the game, and it settled down as Morton began to control the ball more. Ten minutes before half time Robson fouled Salkeld, Muirhead struck the free kick which went just over the bar. Just before the half time whistle Oliver forced Muir into a good save after a good run and good link up play with Colville. Just five minutes into the second half and Morton opened the scoring. Salkeld slipped a ball into Oliver who teed up Cameron

Blues for a shot which he slotted past Muir, and the deadlock was broken. David Galt took a free kick, but it hit the wall and was cleared. Just moments later he had another chance as Longridge cut inside and crossed the ball to him, but his cross was just out of Galt’s reach. The final minutes came and went and the Spiders were unable to find an equaliser as the game ended Greenock Morton 1-0 Queen’s Park.

SAFETY NOTICE Purpose This Policy has been developed in line with an agreement by clubs in the SPFL to take responsibility for the actions of their own supporters at matches, both home and away. Accordingly the SPFL introduced new rules regarding Unacceptable Conduct at football matches with effect from 1st August, 2007. The SFA has also adopted these rules for Scottish Cup Matches. Where a club is in breach of, or failure to fulfil the Rules relative to Unacceptable Conduct, the SPFL, and or the SFA will take certain action against the Club. Examples of this include fines and in extreme cases, sporting sanctions which could include points deductions. Policy

i) good order and security is maintained ii) that policies and procedures have been adopted and are implemented to prevent incidents of Unacceptable Conduct iii) that any incidents of Unacceptable Conduct are, where practicable, dealt with, at its Stadium on the occasion of an Official Match. Each Club must ensure, so far as reasonably practicable, that its players, officials, supporters, and any person exercising a function for or connected with the Club do not engage in Unacceptable Conduct on the occasion of any Official Match. Any failure by a Club to discharge a requirement to which it is subject by virtue of the above Rules shall constitute a breach of these Rules.

It is the policy of Queen’s Park Football Club (the Club) that Unacceptable Conduct will not be tolerated. Any individuals attending matches who are found to have engaged in Unacceptable Conduct may have disciplinary action taken against them. This may include removal of ticketing privileges, removal of season tickets and bans from stadia for a specified period/or other appropriate sanctions. Unacceptable Conduct may also lead to criminal charges. Reference should be made to the SPFL Rules regarding Unacceptable Conduct and Powers of the Board and Commissions when dealing with this policy.

Unacceptable Conduct

Implementation

The Home Club in any Official Match must ensure, so far as reasonably practicable:,

Unacceptable Conduct is conduct which is violent or disorderly. Violent conduct includes any actual, attempted, or threatened physical violence against any person, or intentional damage to property. Disorderly conduct includes; •

Conduct which stirs up or sustains, or is likely or is designed to stir up or sustain hatred or ill will against or towards individuals or groups of people because of: Colour, race, nationality, (including citizenship) or ethnic or national origin Membership, or presumed membership, of a religious group or of a social cultural group with perceived religious affiliation Sexual orientation

• • • •

Transgender identity Disability Using threatening, abusive or insulting words or conduct Displaying writing or any other thing which is threatening, abusive or insulting
