How are we redefining history? Following collaboration among our new group, we discussed the previous group’s study and findings and decided to reconsider history as a mirrored/interactive timeline. We incorporated more Eastern artifacts and prioritized Western works that contributed significance to the timelines. We viewed history as an ever-changing truth that prioritizes present information that influences our past findings. We wanted to take the opportunity to display past works that we saw as important to our two timelines.

What is the Significance of the colors?

The colors help viewers easily differentiate between artifacts in different categories from a distance, before diving into the information.

Why is it important that we redefine history? We s e e t h e a c t o f re d ef i n i n g history as a crucial step for all designers in order to create work that is respectful and imperative, and to broaden their scope of information designers methodology. Seeing past works that visually compare to others through repetition, can display popular themes that relate to the cultural passive absorption or practiced design elements.

How have timelines been used throughout history?

Timelines have been used throughout history to record events and depict the progress of art and science. Timelines are still an important tool to organize, learn, and teach about past events that have influenced our history and shaped our world.

How are we redefining Cannon? While continuing to collaborate with our group, we found that the canon remains a standard of importance and beauty that has yet to evolve. We interpret the canon as a standard of design and focus on elements that critique both the meaning and elevate those shared standards. We reconsidered the canon through the lens of cultural/regional passive absorption compared to Western works in design within similar time periods, seeking a broader scope of canon. We sought artifacts that incorporate designs that are both inside and outside the Phaidon to display diversity in more outside western graphic design, While also exploring the commentary on cultural design methods.

Why are timelines significant?

Timelines are an essential piece of learning about any type of historical development. The condensed depiction of historical occurrences enables viewers to comprehend the information faster while gaining a more universal understanding of what has happened in the past.

Why is it important that we redefine Canon? Understanding the way design methodology has slowly created the standards of design elements being i.e., contrast, balance, emphasis, movement, white space, proportion, hierarchy, repetition, rhythm, pattern, unity, and variety etcetera. We can better elevate our own work and understanding of graphic design by broadening our knowledge of Canon to be influenced by other works that have not been placed within the importance of phaidon.

Seeing outside cultures and eastern works on a displayed timeline will showcase one what culturally practiced design methodologies and what were passive absorption of design methodologies through the c o mp ar i s o n o f t wo wo rks either through a time period or through similar societal works.

Why did we create a timeline?

When creating the timeline, we wanted to emphasize the importance of Eastern artifacts to the same degree that Western artifacts are valued. Viewers can compare and contrast the information presented via various historical periods and cultures using the timeline.

By graphically presenting information and images in an organized format, a new level of comprehension is achieved for those who may be unfamiliar with art as a whole.

Why are we drawing from the outside the western lens? We are drawing artifacts from the eastern lens to experience learning about different types of artifacts in order to expand our view as students of only being exposed to western works. Additionally, by examining other cultures’ designs we can learn different methodology for designing and the success and failures

Why are we using Miro? Miro was used to showcase and build the timeline, due to it’s easily understandable and shareable display that works viually so that people can understand our practice methods on passive cultural absorptions.

What is the importance of political information and Pop culture? We decided to create two timelines to display how artists respond to social and political conflict through media. Pop culture and political climate are intersectional in the way that artists respond to pressure through different areas.

This gives us a two-sided outlook on the way graphic design has developed through both means of media consumption.

How are we sorting/organizing the timelines? We are categorizing our artifacts by developing two timelines that demonstrate how artists react to social and political pressure in the media, respectively. The two timelines show the influences of pop culture and political context to provide a dual perspective on how graphic design has evolved through both forms of media consumption. On both timeframes, the data above the line pertains to artifacts inside the Phaidon, while the data below the line pertains to our chosen artifacts outside the Phaidon. Each artifact is organized by color: yellow for posters/magazines, green for maps, blue for typography/icons, purple for movies/music and pink for packaging designs/books.

How do we want the timeline to make our audience feel?

y

We want the timeline to aid the audience in learning the history of graphic design at their own pace. By displaying it in a larger format, members have the chance to walk around and move to individual artifacts at their own pace.

This creates a more personalized experience and allows for individuals to engage with the artifacts in a way that is meaningful to them.

What do we want the audience to gain from this timeline?

Our goal for this timeline is to allow individuals to learn about the history of graphic design at their own pace and gain perspectives that are not typically taught. We want to create an experience that sparks further conversation and inquiry about different works and their impact on the history of graphic design.

What is the significance of bringing the timeline out of the digital realm? How does this change the experince? Bringing the timeline out of the digital realm allows for a more immersive and engaging experience. It creates an opportunity for individuals to encounter the artifacts as a class or individuals and make their own connections and observations between the different timelines. The timeline changes in that it becomes an interactive experience that individuals can engage with at their own pace. It creates room for further conversation about different works that can last beyond the initial viewing.

The User Experience a

The User Experience is an invitation to the party.

Individuals are more likely to learn and show interest if the user experience is approached in a way that promotes accessibility, obeservation, and experimentation.

Why are we creating an in-person timeline?

We will project two timelines to cover four corners of the walls to curate an experience of exploration and personalization. To make the user experience whole, we plan to create an interactive experience that encourages individuals to interact with the timelines and artifacts.

By creating an in-person timeline, we are demanding a shift from the digital realm to the physical world to enhance our audience’s experience. This also allows for individuals to engage with the artifacts on a larger scale, making them more memorable leading to futher indiviual inquiry.
