Change Your Habits, Change Your World

Passion Passion is an intense enthusiasm for doing something. This is the feeling which we get from engaging in activities we enjoy. The net positive from doing things which we are passionate about is we get better at doing the things we enjoy. This is a key component in driving habit change.

Arul had no passion for exercise nor for exercising at the gym, even though the gym was just a stone’s throw away. What he was passionate about was watching his favorite mini-series which we discovered after coaching.

WORLD

People often ask how they can change their life habits so they can be successful whether at work or in life. After years of research and putting thought into action, we have devised a powerful and proven process using the 7P’s of changing habits.

We suggested Arul to exercise on the running machine while watching his favorite shows at the same time. Doing so allows him to obtain two positives, exercising and catching up on his television programs. The good thing is he was happy to exercise and watch television at the same time. The passion for his shows provided him with the motivation to exercise.

Pleasure Pleasure is the trigger which results in us wanting to continue what we are doing. The feeling is a sense of reward and accomplishment thereby encouraging us to do more of the same pleasurable activity. Think of this as a stimulus for good behaviors and habits we want to cultivate for success.

We want to make this process easy to learn and easier to apply. Let us share with you the experience of Arul, a client of ours, as we guide you to apply the 7P’s in your life.

Unfortunately for Arul, he derived no pleasure from exercise since he had yet to feel the full range of benefits exercise can bring. Nonetheless, he identified having more energy to play with his two daughters and getting things done faster as pleasurable.

Pain Purpose To begin the transformation process, we must begin with the question “WHY”. This helps focus your intention in wanting to change. The “WHY” provides the end-in-mind and develops a well-formed outcome you want for your life and career. Remember, the purpose is the BIG PICTURE, this is your Vision of what dreams you want to realize and bring into reality to achieve your goals. Let us look at Arul. He was managing a critical business turn-around project and was spending extremely long hours in the office. As a result, he was stressed, frequently tired, and in danger of burning out. His purpose in wanting to have a balanced, healthy lifestyle for sustainable happiness and success was his key driver for change.

All rights reserved by ITD World

Pain is a double edged sword, we usually want to avoid painful situations but pain can also push us to excel and realize our full potential when we overcome painful experiences. In our case with Arul, he was experiencing frequent backaches and neck pain due to sitting for too long, conducting meetings and gadget overuse. This is his physical pain. His mental pain was not being able to care for his daughters if he falls sick which he desperately wants to avoid.

People It is said that those who want to fly fast have to fly alone; those who want to fly far have to fly in a team. The principle of teamwork is also relevant in the quest to change your

habits. You could do well with help from those around you to break bad habits and create good ones for lifelong success.

For Arul, his teammate was his spouse who enjoyed running and she joined him on his exercise routine. Her joining him on his run ensure he was accountable for what he wanted to achieve in his life.

Process Changing habits learned throughout life is not easy but having a process to help make such actions more automatic which lightens the effort. This is where technology can play a vital role in creating good habits. Smart usage of the smartphone and other electronic devices can help by setting alarms and keeping track of progress. Those who prefer the old-school method of pen and paper are also free to do so. The key is to use the tool you are most comfortable with. This can even elicit triggers in your quest for changing for the better. In Arul’s case, he had his assistant set daily reminders on his smartphone and uploaded the shows unto his electronic devices so he could watch them while running on the treadmill.

Persistence Keep in mind that change does not happen overnight. Persistence is the key in the journey to change your habits for the better. You will become better as time goes on by being persistent. Persistence was the key for Arul as he kept up his exercise regime for 60 days to create the desired habit. He can feel his life changed for the better. He maintained the positive momentum and continued to use the 7P’s to change his other crucial habits at work. To mark the occasion and to celebrate, he took his wife out for a romantic holiday. Arul’s case is just one of many of our successes in helping people achieve their dreams in life. We are truly happy for his transformation where our 7Ps has helped him greatly. We strongly believe that you can realize your aspirations in work and life if you continue doing the right things.

LIFE CHANGING daily active questions

One sure way of getting better results in work and life is by changing our thoughts, actions and habits for the better. But that’s easier said than done. Many people focus on making excuses, blaming and expecting others to change and this turns out to be futile.

In the past we did try to make our spouses, family members, bosses and friends change in the way that we wanted, and we did not succeed. But when we decided to improve ourselves continuously, we won big time. The person that you really have control over is indeed yourself. Remember the wise words of Mahatma Gandhi who said, “Be the change that you want to see in the world.” Listen to Michael Jackson singing the Man in the Mirror and you will find this valuable point “If you want to make the world a better place, take look at yourself and then make the change” Go ahead, take a look in the mirror or your selfie device and say out loud, “positive change starts with you.” So, how can you succeed in making the change?

Responsibility Mindset

E+R=O

MINDSET

(EVENT + RESPONSE = OUTCOME)

mindset responsibility

A wise person is one that takes full responsibility for his or her life and results. They do not whine and blame others for not being able to achieve a goal. Taking full responsibility means you would give up making all sorts of excuses, victim stories and the reasons “why you cannot” do something. Stop blaming your life on outside circumstances. How this is done is through a simple formula by psychologist Dr Robert Resnick who introduced the E + R = O formula (Event + Response = Outcome). This clearly shows how you respond to a certain event will determine the result you get.

Those who focus mainly on the event would blame everything and anything – how hot the sun is; how wet the rain is, the government; the boss; the spouse; the children – they will feel frustrated and not achieve much. Such thoughts can lead to self-defeating behaviors and be a stumbling block to success. Instead of blaming others or circumstances, you can instead choose to respond (R) to the events (E) until you get the outcome (O) you desire. Change the way you think, imagine, feel, act and focus until you get what you want. This powerful technique is known as reframing where you can reframe your response to create an outcome beneficial to you.

EMBRACE GRATITUDE

The feeling of gratitude is a very potent positive emotion. But what are we grateful for? Most of us will be grateful for the big things, like a good job, a happy family, a nice house and a luxury car. These are some obvious examples of things which we are commonly grateful for and rightly so.

However, when was the last time we were grateful for the small things? For example, are we grateful for fresh air, sunlight and the people who plant the trees by the roadside so we can enjoy the shade on a sunny day? Are we thankful to the security officers for checking our bags and bodies to ensure safety for everyone? When the lift is being fixed, are we grateful for the opportunity to climb the stairs for the good exercise to strengthen our heart? Are we grateful when we are faced with a roadblock or unexpected setbacks, so we can develop empathy and compassion towards those who face similar situations?

20

To be open and mindful of the small details in life only helps us in gaining greater appreciation for the bigger blessings which come our way. Being grateful for small things only magnifies our feeling of thankfulness when a bigger win happens. We want to be grateful for the people who have helped us along our journeys of work and life. When we do so, people would want to support us even more. Think of those people who we have helped but nary any appreciation was given; now, think of those people who we helped and were so sincerely grateful. Which group of people would we prefer to support in the future? This is a good illustration of how being grateful and having a heart full of gratitude multiplies the good we can do for each other. In other words, goodness increases with gratefulness. This is proven in the highly credible “Be grateful for little Mankato study, among many others, which shows that things every day and people who practice gratitude, enjoy better health, notice how your life greater achievements and yes, they do live longer and changes as you marvel at happier lives. bigger things that come your way” The key here is to go to bed and wake up every day with Dr Marshall Goldsmith & Dr Peter Chee

He began to thank and demonstrate appreciation to those who added value to his day. Phillip felt more joyful in each present moment as be continued to focus on appreciating the people around him and began to find gratitude in even small things like a glass of mineral water. Soon, his image as a distant person become a distant memory and people wanted to be on his team again as they felt appreciated for their efforts. Perception of him changed as he began to express his gratitude to others. As Phillip persisted with his new habit, his life turned around for the better. His mastery of both people and result orientation earned him high respect from key stakeholders and led Phillip to becoming a role model CIO of the company.

Transformational Coaching Questions Phillip’s Case Story Phillip was a high-ranked executive in a logistics company just one reporting line away from the Chief Information Officer (CIO) in his organization. Unfortunately, he has a reputation for being hard to work with and seen as aloof and distant. When a department made a call to fill vacancies, Phillip was shocked to find many under him made the switch. Not making things better shortly after was when he was overlooked for the chief level post when the incumbent retired. Sensing something amiss, he reached out to his peers. He was told he was a competent executive. However, his lack of gratitude for the contributions and recommendations from his peers or direct reports was hurting his reputation. Realizing he had to change or be changed; he sought the help of his mentor to chart him a path towards being a more grateful person. Acting upon the advice, he carried a small heart-shaped stone in his pocket as a reminder of want he was grateful for every day. Phillip also started to write down daily in his gratitude journal, the things he felt thankful for and how he would express that to others each day. All rights reserved by ITD World

5Fs of Leadership Resilience to Thrive in Challenging Times

5Fs of LEADERSHIP RESILIENCE to thrive in challenging times

Overcoming the challenges amid the tide of instability is going to require leadership resilience. With a resilient mindset, you are more perceptive to windows of opportunities, and you are more daring to take on calculated risks which pay off to let you thrive in these challenging times

to thrive in challenging times

We are truly living in volatile times where scenarios can change at a moment’s notice; Where situations are in flux and uncertain; Where things can be both chaotic and complex; and Where signals and information can sometimes be ambiguous. To rise above the tide, leaders would engage their resourcefulness and creativity to innovatively develop new solutions by leveraging on the 5Fs of Focus, Fast, Flexible, Fearless and Fun. These five empower leaders to move decisively and build resilience for flourishing.

t Focus t Being focused is not only just about being in a state of mind. Do not focus your energies on the wrong thing after all. Focus means prioritizing what is important and concentrating on vital projects or tasks which the desired results. Ask yourself, “What is the most urgent and impactful task I need to finish doing today?”. Then focus on these tasks and projects with a profound impact and

consequence in the near to mid-term future. For your team, focus is bringing their attention and energy back to the purpose, values, and vision of the organization. Great things are bound to happen when the entire team is focused on carrying out the mission to bring a common compelling vision to life.

accelerate leadership transformation

26

t Fast t When situations flow rapidly, you would want to respond fast. Perfection can be a good goal to strive for but getting things done is equally important as organizations face an ever-changing industrial landscape. You do not want to find yourself stagnant while others are evolving to meet current demands. Since the situation is fluid, you want to be in a state of accelerated pivoting. This means moving fast and accelerating to test your prototypes while continuously

t Fearless t improving as you go along. Failure can happen but quickly pivot away from what doesn’t work to activities which brings in the results you want.

The aim is to be fast and effective, not fast and perfect, and not fast but wrong. This means ensuring a minimum standard of excellence or product quality is met before rolling out the service or solution. You want to be quick to keep your clients happy, not push them away rapidly.

t Flexible t There is a famous maxim which states that those who stay flexible would not get bent out of shape. Resilience is not only about being tough; it is about being agile. In 5 Levels of Mastery, coauthored by me, World #1 Coaching Guru Marshall Goldsmith and Aaron Ngui, we touched upon the concept of conscious agility.

Do your best not to get upset when things do not turn out the way you expect. Accept that plans can go off-course. A key to resilience is to be mindfully aware that you can take charge of continuously adjusting to changing conditions to get back on track, even if it means taking a detour or a different route towards reaching your end goal.

In brief, conscious agility is about staying mentally flexible by adapting and improving to overcome roadblocks along the way. If option A is a no-go, then quickly move on the option B, if that is also a nogo, switch to option C. It means you are clear on what you want to achieve but also agile enough to find different ways, means and methods to to reach your destination.

In difficult times, it can sometimes feel that the desired results are slow to come by. But a state of conscious agility would allow you to recognize that the fruit may sometimes take time to ripen. This is true when it comes to change as you adapt and evolve to acquire more knowledge and relevant skills to enable a foundation for thriving. As your competency grows, your execution gets better, and success can come sooner.

A fearless leader is not one who takes unnecessary risks or who dashes into the fire without thinking. Fearlessness is acknowledging the fire exists but equipping yourself sufficiently to put out the fire or to storm through the fire coming out still in good shape. Fire and rescue services personnel do this all the time, they rush into burning buildings but are equipped with the right tools to execute their jobs properly. What are the tools you can equip yourself with to be fearless to overcome challenges? A key component of fearlessness is keeping your energy levels high to keep the momentum flowing. The following three techniques can help you maintain a sense of readiness, so you feel prepared to face any situation. The first technique is Emotional Healing (EH) which consists of tapping on vital energy points along your face and your body to release happy chemicals and to reverse negative to positive energy. The second technique flows from EH and is called the Energy Healing Technique (EHT) which follows the tapping motion along your arms, body and major joints. The third is an energizing exercise called the Energy Flow Technique (EFT) which combines systematic breathing with arm and torso movement to energize your senses.

Scan the QR code for a video on how all three can be done:

As a leader, you can help your team become fearless by boosting their self-esteem and making them feel like champions. Praise them when something goes well; mentor them to build their competencies and coach them to unleash their potential so they are continuously motivated to do more and do better. Inspiring yourself and your team to having a strong belief in the mission is another important element of being fearless. People who are driven to fulfill a mission are more courageous to face adversity. Your fearlessness serves as an example to others which empowers and lights the fires of courage in them. You can also leverage on the Uplifting Meditation Technique (UMT) to lift your heart, mind, body and spirit and others too. People who feel uplifted in all four areas of their life feel stronger and are more likely to face challenges fearlessly. Apply the UMT daily to increase selfesteem and self-confidence to strengthen yourself. By extinguishing your own fires, you can also help others to put out their fires and gain their support and influence. Helping others resolve their issues makes people feel like champions and when people feel like champions, they act more like champions to produce better results in the face of fear.

t Fun t Life is boring without fun. Even in tough times, there are moments of joy you can build upon to maintain a positive outlook. One way to bring in happiness is to embrace an attitude of gratitude. Being grateful is a powerful driver for mental and emotional wellbeing. By being grateful, you are putting your attention on the bird already in your hand and not the two birds in the bush. How do you bring in more gratitude and more joy? You can start a gratitude journal where you record down the things you are thankful for each day. Clients who have started one have shared that they feel more upbeat and positive as they are constantly reminded of the many blessings they have in life. See Part 4 of this eBook why gratitude is the Mother of All Virtues. When you feel more lighthearted, you are more happy and joyful and are more likely to enjoy what you do and to spread the joy to others. Access this powerful emotion by maintaining authentic rapport with others using humour. Connect with people and share your happiness and their happiness together. A well-developed sense of humour can generate hope and optimism, improve overall mood states, ignite joy and laughter. Laughter releases the endorphins in your body which are widely known to boost your health to

uplift your well-being and gives more energy to do positive things. Watch a sitcom, listen to a funny podcast or even share a joke with your loved ones or team to lighten the mood and blow away the dark clouds. Many leaders use humour to deal with the responsibilities placed on their shoulders. Former USA president Barrack Obama is quoted as saying, “You have to take your responsibility seriously, but you know you have to be able to laugh at yourself first and foremost in order to be able to manage the whole thing.” He is widely known for possessing a sense of humour and has been reported to leverage on laughter to survive the stress of world leadership. Another world leader who leans on humour is Mahatma Gandhi who said, “If I had no sense of humour, I would long ago have committed suicide.” He once quipped that he traveled on the thirdclass train carriage because there was no fourth class in response to a reporter’s question. Building upon these 5Fs are the pillars of leadership resilience in times of crisis provides a solid foundation to overcome barriers thrown up by circumstances. By successfully navigating over these obstacles, you position yourself to be me resilient and thrive in challenging times.
