gekry?’

Hierdie is ’n ‘once in a lifetime’-ondervinding.

“Ek is tans, ná 4 500 kilometer, in Aus.

Altesaam 77 renosters is verlede jaar gestroop – 32 meer as in 2021.

Kindersterftesyfer in Namibië neem af

Hiervan was 43% adolessente.

FOTO ARGIEF

“Ek is net ’n mens.

Business7 is aired weekly on Wednesdays at 21:00 on NTV - channel 285 on DStv and channel 94 on GOtv with repeats at 20:30 on Saturdays. It is also broadcast on Wednesdays at 19:00 on the Facebook pages of Namibian Sun, Republikein and Allgemeine Zeitung. It focuses on current issues in the Namibian economy and analyses how global developments impact the country.

My seun is skielik kort ná sy troue oorlede en my dogter later in ’n motorongeluk.

SMS'e Besoek Etosha Okaukuejo in Desember 2022. Uiters swak diens oor Kerstyd. SÊ MAAR NET 30 JAAR GELEDE Van waar, Gehasi?

Ek verstom my vir Seniorpark se ondankbare inwoners. My tuintjie is skoon en netjies. Hy is bekwaam.

- Woensdag, 6 Januarie 1993

Old Boys met rug teen muur in herontmoeting by Vegkop » Klubkrieket

• Huidige topvyf lopiema kers in die premierliga: 1 Niko Davin (Wanderers), 202 lopies in drie kolfbeurte, gemiddeld 101, 1x100, 1x50. 2 Shaun Fouché (WHS Old Boys), 153 lopies in drie kolfbeurte, gemiddeld 51, 1x100. 3 JC Balt (Wanderers), 137 lopies in drie kolfbeurte, gemiddeld 68.5, 1x100. 4 JW Visagie (WHS Old Boys), 104 lopies in vier kolfbeurte, gemiddeld 34.67, 1x50. 5 Malan Kruger (WHS Old Boys), 98 lopies in drie kolfbeurte, gemiddeld 49.0, 1x50. • Huidige topvyf paaltjie nemers in die premierliga: 1 Mauritius Ngupita (CCD), 10 paaltjies in 3 wedstryde (25.2 boulbeurte), ekonomie 2.92. 2 Stefan Bezuidenhout (United), 9 paaltjies in 4 wedstryde (32.2 bb), ekonomie 5.07. 3 Karl Birkenstock (Wanderers), 7 paaltjies in 2 wedstryde (16 bb), ekonomie 4.44. 4 Handre Klazinga (United), 7 paaltjies in 2 wedstryde (18.2 bb), ekonomie 5.40. 5 Danie van Schoor (Wanderers), 5 paaltjies in 3 wedstryde (17 bb), ekonomie 2.47. • WHS Old Boys se elftal vir môre: Shaun Fouche, Divan La Cock, Zane Green (paal tjiewagter), JP Kotze (kaptein), Gerhard van Rensburg, JW Visagie, Malan Kruger, Tangeni Lungameni, Donovan Zealand, Zacheo van Vuuren, Zhivago Groenewald.

T

he buzz of 2023 awakens, our children return to school and parents are back to the grind after yet another extensive “spending season”. This is also when the harsh reality of our financial situation kicks in and one is left to manage a balancing act to reach end of January. This is an ideal time of reflection about our financial well-being. “As one becomes acutely aware of one’s finances, it is also a good time to review how one manages one’s hard-earned income,” says Enwich Kazondu, principle officer of the Namibia Building Workers Pension Fund (NBWPF). “Obviously, from our perspective we would always highlight the importance of saving money for one’s retirement, but we are also aware that people are struggling to make ends meet on a day-to-day basis, let alone putting money aside for many years down the line. For that reason we will be supporting current and potential members throughout the year to increase their financial understanding.” It is a general trend that in an environment where a very large percentage of the population is unemployed or underemployed, that one income often supports many members of an extended family. Immediate financial demands override the importance of saving for retirement. It is therefore critical that one focuses on personal financial planning. Everyone needs to be made aware as to how important it is to establish a realistic budget that clearly looks at one’s income and balanced related spending. Equally important is to understand which outstanding debts are to be paid and after consolidation, to include that into one’s budget.

Budget

Ideally, every budget should make scope for savings for unforeseen circumstances that can occur at any time. However, it remains important to put money

aside for many years later when one is no longer in the position to earn an income. Initially, it can be only a small percentage of one’s income, which can increase over time, as one’s financial position improves. One important element is to remember, that the employer also makes a contribution which essentially increases one’s financial rewards and that with every payment one’s tax liabilities reduce.

Putting money aside for when we are older and more fragile and vulnerable, we are far better off if we can at least be financially independent. Enwich Kazondu Principle Officer: NBWPF

Kazondu says: “Putting money aside for when we are older and more fragile and vulnerable, we are far better off if we can at least be financially independent. Ideally, we should not put ourselves into the position, where our family has to take care of us in the future, especially if we consider the current high level of youth unemployment. It is therefore really important that we try and spend less now and make some financial sacrifices in order to have a better future.” “This year we will once again have several initiatives such as the annual roadshow and training interventions to increase our members’ financial acumen to change behaviour. Even though employers in our industry are legally obliged to register their workers with a pension fund, is remains also important to change sentiments and attitudes of those that will be benefitting of future retirement investments.”

COMPANY NEWS IN BRIEF TELKOM SURGES 11% AS IT CALLS OFF MERGER TALKS Shares of SA’s third-largest mobile operator Telkom leapt by double digits on Wednesday afternoon, after it said merger talks with data-only operator Rain had been called off. The parties had determined that “a suitable transaction is not possible at this time”, Telkom said in a brief statement, with this being determined after initial discussions, but before any due diligence. Telkom’s shares jumped as much as 11% to R35.95 on Wednesday afternoon, but they have still fallen more than 30% over the past year. Click here for more details on Telkom’s shares and other information. Rain had maintained a merger with Telkom could create a “5G powerhouse” and also mooted other benefits, including in terms of infrastructure, while also avoiding the creation of a mobile “duopoly” in the form of Vodacom and MTN. However, Telkom’s failure to offer MTN exclusivity during their takeover talks had resulted in MTN walking away from discussions in October, prompting Telkom’s shares to crash by almost a quarter on that news. In July 2022, MTN had offered to buy Telkom in return for shares or a combination of cash and shares, while in September, Rain had essentially asked Telkom to buy it in exchange for new shares. Rain said on Wednesday that both parties had “determined that the current circumstances do not align for a mutually beneficial transaction to take place at this time”. “While the specific reasons for

this decision are confidential, both parties will keep open the possibility of re-evaluating the potential transaction in the future when -Fin24 conditions align,” it said. MATTRESS FIRM PULLS NEW YORK LISTING PLANS Steinhoff’s US unit Mattress Firm has pulled its plans to raise as much as US$100 million (R1.7 billion) in a New York listing due to volatility in the market for initial public offerings (IPOs). Steinhoff holds 50.1% of Mattress Firm, which is the largest specialty bed retailer in the US, with almost 2 400 outlets. The firm is almost twice as large as its next biggest competitor and an estimated 82% of the US population live within 10 miles (16 kilometers) of one of its stores. Mattress firm announced in January 2022 it was planning to list, with its prospectus noting that historically, mattress sales in the US closely follows GDP growth. Mattress Firm continues to actively explore all options and paths forward, including resuming the IPO process once the markets are favourable, Steinhoff said on Wednesday. According to a report by professional services firm Ernst & Young, IPO proceeds fell 61% in 2022 due to market volatility after setting records in 2021. While conditions are expected to remain muted in early 2023, there is a strong pipeline for IPOs which could see activity pick up in the second half of the year, the report said. However, this would still be conditional on a raft of factors, such as improved stock market performance, easing geopolitical

tension, lower inflation as well as an end to interest rate hikes. Steinhoff, which currently has debt of €10 billion (R183 billion), had also raised about €1 billion through Pepco’s listing on the Warsaw bourse in Poland in 2021, but the group itself may delist. The firm announced in December that it had reached a deal with its largest creditors, which could see them holding 80% of the -Fin24 company.

The standardised nominal value of transactions cleared through BankservAfrica climbed more than R150 billion to some R1.3 trillion in December.

B

ankservAfrica, the largest automated payments clearing house in Africa, says its index tracking activity in South Africa’s economy snapped a six-month streak of declines in December, almost recovering to a level seen in January 2022. BankservAfrica’s economic transactions index (BETI) makes use of data from the millions of transactions it processes daily, and it climbed 1.7% year-on-year to 132.1 points in the last month of the year. The report uses 2005 as a benchmark of 100 points, reflecting the standardised value of all economic transactions in the South Africa economy at seasonally adjusted real constant prices. The monthly, quarterly and annual improvements in the index all signal some improvement in the broader South African economy, BankservAfrica said, with the improvement coming despite “the ongoing, dismal economic context. “The welcomed improvement to the BETI occurred against the broader economic context that has remained fairly grim during December, with load shedding continuing, interest rates and inflation remaining at elevated levels and the global economic slowdown gaining momentum,” said independent economist Elize Kruger, who helped compile the report, in a statement.

Electronic

The latest movement in the BETI is a reflection of the South African economy’s resilience, she said, as well as the annual festive season spend that contributed to the number of electronic transactions pushing to an all-time high of 143.6 million, an 11.4% year-on-year in-

crease and 2.7% up on a monthly basis. The standardised nominal value of transactions cleared through BankservAfrica climbed more than R150 billion to some R1.3 trillion in December year-on-year, but the average value per transaction declined by 4.3%.

The welcomed improvement to the BETI occurred against the broader economic context that has remained fairly grim during December. BankservAfrica

While the improvement in the BETI for December is encouraging, there are indications that we could expect ‘more of the same’ in 2023, as the main challenges of load shedding and households under pressure from elevated inflation and interest rates are likely to remain, the report reads. “All indications also point to a less supportive global environment as the International Monetary Fund recently warned that a third of the global economy could be in a recession this year, adding to the risks for the South African economy from an export and commodity price perspective. One silver lining is the expectation that consumer inflation should moderate and provide some relief for many South Africans.” - Fin24
