ie komeet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) bereik op 2 Februarie sy naaste punt aan die aarde sedert die ystydperk van sowat 50 000 jaar gelede. Dit mag dalk selfs helder genoeg raak om met die blote oog waar te neem. Boonop behoort dit vanaf 4 Februa­ rie ook plaaslik gesien te kan word, waar dit aanvanklik naby die ster Alpha Aurigae (Capella) sal verskyn

In dié geval sal jy dit met die blote oog vanuit ’n donker ligging kan sien. Volgens die databasis sal die komeet op 1 Februarie op sy helderste wees,

Nog minder is merkwaardig en kan met die blote oog waargeneem word. “Die komeet kon tot dusver die beste vanuit die Noordelike Halfrond waargeneem word,” is gesê. Die komeet se naam dui aan in watter jaar en maand dit ontdek is, asook die hoeveelste komeet dit is om in die spesifieke tydperk ontdek te word. Die laaste deel van die komeet se naam verwys na die persoon of ­instansie wat dit ontdek het. In die geval is dit deur die Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) ontdek. Die naam C/2022 E3 (ZTF) beteken dus dat die komeet (C/) die derde een (3) is om in die eerste helfte van Maart in 2022 (periode 2022 E) ontdek te word en dat dit deur die Zwicky ­Transient Facility (ZTF) ontdek is. Die komeet is ’n paraboliese komeet; dit wil sê ’n komeet wat van ’n wentelbaan in die Oortwolk ontwrig is en deur die middelpunt van ons sonnestelsel op ’n paraboliese wentelbaan beweeg, wat dit waarskynlik nie weer sal laat terugkeer hierheen nie. Hierdie paraboliese trajek is teen ’n hoek van 109 grade gekantel, as dit met die sonnestelsel vergelyk word. Op 5 en 6 Februarie sal die komeet sy verskyning teen 20:30 net bo die noordelike horison maak en sal die beste tot 21:20 gesien kan word. Die jongste kind in die groep is in graad 1 en hy moet sy broek uittrek om deur die water te loop. Die ouer kinders hou sy hande vas vir ondersteuning, aangesien die water op sommige plekke modderig en glad is,” het Lydia vertel. In die middel van die vloedwater begin die kinders debatteer oor watter kant die mensgemaakte damme is. Vanmiddag is hulle gelukkig. Emilia Haiduwa van die Oimbadalunga-­ nedersetting is ook besig om deur die water te loop. Sy vertel hulle om links te hou en waarsku dat daar aan hul regterkant twee mensgemaakte damme is en hulle loop die risiko om in te val. Hulle is vol vertroue oor die pad. “Dit is waar ons vanoggend geloop het,” stem hulle ooreen. Abraham sê hoewel sy daarna uitgesien het om die akademiese jaar te begin, is sy bekommerd dat sy elke dag die vloedwater moet oorsteek om by die skool te kom. “Daar is slange in die water. Ons het gesien hoe die mense van die dorp oor die naweek slange doodgemaak

het. Maar ons het geen keuse nie. Ons loop deur die water met die hoop dat die slange nie in ons pad is nie,” het sy gesê.

REGERING MOET HELP

Abraham sê sy het die regering nodig om hulle te help met ’n tent sodat hulle skuiling by die skool kan kry terwyl hulle wag dat die vloedwater sak. “So hoef ons nie nat by die skool aan te kom nie. Dit was nie maklik om vanoggend die water oor te steek en nou weer terug te gaan nie,” het sy gesê. Haiduwa het gesê die reën gaan nog kom en dit sal hul situasie vererger. “Onvoorspelbare reënval maak dit moeilik om die vloede te voorspel. Dis net die begin. Die watervlakke sal styg. As die leerlinge en inwoners ’n boot kan kry om die water oor te steek as ’n tydelike maatreël, sal dit nuttig wees,” het sy gesê. Haiduwa het gesê die vloedwater sak gewoonlik eers in Augustus. “Stel jou voor ons is nou in Januarie. Vir hoe lank moet die leerlinge aanhou om deur die water te loop?”

SKOOLHOOF

Jacobina Munageni, die skoolhoof, het gesê hulle raai die ouers aan om reëlings te tref met familielede wat aan die kant is wat nie oorstroom is nie. “Die ouers wat nie verblyf kry nie, neem verantwoordelikheid om hul kinders skool toe te bring. Soms bly die jongmense by die huis, of die oueres sorg vir hulle,” het Munageni gesê. Dit neem ten minste 30 minute om deur die vloedwater vanaf Engela na Oimbadalunga te loop. – [email protected]

Tsumkwe-inwoners soek geregtigheid Duiwelsklou is ’n inkomstebron in beide Nyae Nyae en N‡a Jaqna, maar die plant word vertrap deur beeste wat onwettig in dié bewaringsgebiede ingebring word.

Die regering het 137 onwettige heinings gevind waarvan 57 reeds teen ’n koste van N$349 407 verwyder is.

ie lewensbestaan van die !Xun San van die N‡a Jaqnabewaringsgebied in Tsumkwe-Wes en die Ju/’hoansi San van die Nyae Nyae-bewaringsgebied in Tsumkwe-Oos word tans bedreig. Dit weens onwettige vee wat hul weiding opvreet. Die Nyae Nyae-ontwikkelingstigting se woordvoerder, Saskia Shee­ hama, het verlede week ’n mediaverklaring namens dié randgemeenskappe uitgereik. “Die langtermyn potensiële negatiewe impak van die onwettige weiding van beeste, en die onwettige omheining van plase om die duiwelsklou-hulpbron – ’n belangrike inkomstebron in beide Nyae Nyae en N‡a Jaqna – is aansienlik en moet dringend getakel word,” lui die verklaring.

Dié bewaringsgebied en die Ju/’hoansi tradisionele owerheid het vier boere in Julie 2015 hof toe gesleep nadat hulle die heining geknip en meer as 1 000 beeste ingebring het. Ná die ingryping van die voormalige polisiehoof, lt.genl. Sebastian Ndeitunga, het die hofsaak in 2016 begin, maar die saak sloer steeds voort. Die N‡a Jaqna-gemeenskap het ’n saak in 2016 aanhangig gemaak en 22 boere moes die grond verlaat het, maar dié bevel is na bewering skaars uitgevoer. “Die N‡a Jaqna-bewaringsgebied probeer steeds om daagliks onwettige heinings en boorgate binne wildgebiede te keer met min ondersteuning van die regering se kant af,” lui die verklaring. Die ­w oordvoerder van die ministerie van

landbou, water en grond­ hervorming, Jona Mu­ sheko, sê egter die regering het nie misluk in die handhawing van wetgewing rakende die grond op Tsumkwe nie.

“Die proses om die on­ wettigheid van ’n heining te bewys is nie eenvoudig nie, en ook nie ’n twee dae lange proses nie.” Hy sê die ministerie het ondersoek ingestel en 137 onwettige heinings

opgespoor. Altesaam 57 daarvan is reeds teen ’n koste van N$349 407 verwyder. Die ministerie het onwettige heinings van 19 kilometer in Kanovlei gevind, 11 km in Bubi Pos, 23 km in !Kadu en 105 km by #Ha-Du. Die ministerie werk saam met die Otjozondjupa kommunale grond­ raad en die ministerie van ­justisie om die oorblywende 42 heinings te verwyder, volgens Musheko, wat die kwessie as ingewikkeld beskryf. Uitgebreide onder­ soeke word uitgevoer om die wettigheid van enige heining vas te stel, sê hy. Tot dusver is 34 mense skuldig bevind en opdrag gegee om teen hul eie koste die onwettige heinings te verwyder. Nóg vyf heinings moet ingevolge ’n bevel van die appèltribunaal verwyder word, terwyl ’n hofbevel vir die verwydering van nog 18 heinings uitgereik is, sê hy. Een uitdaging is om die eienaars van die heinings op te spoor, sê hy. “Die proses om die onwettigheid van ’n heining te bewys is nie eenvoudig nie, en ook nie ’n twee dae lange proses nie. Dit is ’n lang proses met kom­ ponente wat buite die ­jurisdiksie van die mi­ nisterie val. Ander­sins geniet die Tsumkwe-­ kwessie die hoogste aan­dag in die ministerie,” het hy bygevoeg. – [email protected]

Queen Ndaponah wil Namibië bevorder » Haar eerste boek is op die rakke ‘The Namibian Princess’ leer beide kinders en volwassenes oor die ontsagwekkende Namibiese landskappe, verskillende kulture en tradisies.

“M

y grootste droom was om my boek The Namibian Princess in al 70 Namibiese ambassades se wagkamers te vertoon. Mense wat na die ambassades toe gaan om onder meer visum-aansoeke te doen, kan dan die boek lees en opgewonde oor Namibië raak. Die ministerie van internasio­nale betrekkinge en samewerking sê egter hulle het nie die geld om 70 boeke te koop wat die land sal bevorder nie. “Ek het ook ’n brief aan die ambassade in die Verenigde State van Amerika geskryf, maar het tot op hede nog nie ’n antwoord ontvang nie. Ek neem aan ek sal self Amerika toe moet gaan en self Namibië moet bevorder, en terwyl ek dit doen, kan ek sommer ’n eksemplaar van die boek by die ambassade los,” vertel Queen Ndaponah Shikangalah, die skrywer van The Namibian Princess. Queen Ndaponah is in balling­ skap in die Pumwani-hospitaal in Nairobi, Kenia, gebore. Die eerste vyf jaar van haar lewe het sy in die huis van Tate Mavulu in Nyango in die Swapo-vlugtelingkamp in Zambië deurgebring. “Op vyfjarige ouderdom is ek en baie ander vlugtelingkinders van ons families geskei en na ’n ander vlugtelingkamp in Angola naby N’dalatando gestuur. Ons kinder­garten, die Natalia Mavulu-sentrum, is na my wyle tannie Natalia vernoem. Ek het later by die wyle Victoria Kambalala in Kwanza Sul gaan bly.” Op 12-jarige ouderdom het sy na Ecole Secondaires de la Namibie in Brazzaville in die Kongo getrek en in 1990 het sy vir die eerste keer na Namibië gekom. “My kinderjare was soos dié van ’n tipiese vlugtelingkind in Afrika. Ek het in die tyd van voedsel­skaarste grootgeword. Dus het ons meestal

kos gesoek en dit was ’n avontuur op sy eie. “Ons het vroegoggend wakker geword en militêre opleiding ontvang. Ons verantwoordelikhede in die kampe was om dit skoon te hou en besoekers te vermaak. Wanneer die sirene sou afgaan, moes ons seker maak die jonger kinders hardloop ook in die regte rigting. “Op rustige dae het ons in die Angolese oerwoude ingevaar. Ons het na die woude gegaan op soek na vrugte en bessies. Soms het lorries vol kos gekom, maar as ek nou as volwassene terugkyk, was net ’n uitgesoekte paar in die kamp bevoorreg genoeg om van dit te eet, net soos vandag in Namibië. Nie veel het verander nie. “’n Paar uitgesoektes geniet nog steeds alles namens ons terwyl ons in stilte toekyk en hoop dat hulle eendag versadig sal word en begin om dit ook met ons te deel. “Ons bly egter hoopvol met ons eerste vroue-president en haar moederlike instinkte dat inklusiwiteit nie net ’n woord gaan bly wat rondgeslinger word wanneer dit stemtyd is nie, maar dat dit ’n Namibiese werklikheid sal word.” Nadat sy haar hoërskooldae by die Progress College in Kaapstad voltooi het, het sy Duitsland toe gegaan. “Ek en my vriende het die Afro-Berlin TV Broadcasting on Offener Kanal begin. Ek het dit só geniet om Afrika-inhoud te skep dat ek besluit het om Londen toe te gaan om ’n diploma in film­regie te doen.” Queen Ndaponah se boek is geïnspireer deur die safari’s wat sy

speel nie. “Ons gooi woorde soos boublokke van die Namibiese nasie rond. Verbeel jou Namibiese kinders speel met poppe wat soos hulle lyk, uit ’n boek wat oor hul land geskryf is. Verbeel jou watter impak dit op ’n kind se psige sal hê.”

in Namibië meegemaak het. “Ek wou Namibië met die boek bevorder terwyl ek in die Verenigde Koninkryk gewoon het, maar ek het my opleiding klaargemaak en besluit om huis toe te kom en verder te skryf. “Die boek is eintlik ’n filmverhaal vir ’n animasiereeks wat beide kinders en volwassenes oor die ontsagwekkende Namibiese landskappe, verskillende kulture en tradisies leer. Ek wou saam met

die NBC in dié verband werk, maar ek dink ek was ver voor die tyd met die vierdimensionele Namibiese inhoud.” Die boek is tans slegs in Engels beskikbaar, maar sy hoop dat dit in die toekoms in al die Namibiese tale beskikbaar sal wees. “Ons regering het egter nie die geld vir sulke projekte nie, om nie eens van die idee te praat van poppe wat soos die karakters in die boek lyk waarmee kinders kan

Hulle wil hê dat jy op jou eie koste moet reis en jou eie geld moet gebruik om die land vir hulle te bevorder.” Die hoogtepunt in haar lewe was toe sy die eerste gedrukte eksemplaar van The Namibian Princess in haar hande kon vashou. “Uiteindelik het ek een van my boeke gedruk. Ek het so baie tyd bestee om die inhoud te versamel. Namibië en die Afrika-vasteland in geheel is ’n wonderlike leë skilderdoek. Ek het so baie boeke wat gereed is, maar ek het nie die geld om dit te laat druk nie.” Queen Ndaponah se grootste droom is om eendag saam met ’n internasionale uitgewer te werk sodat haar boeke wêreldwyd be­ skikbaar is. “Dit sal my gelukkig maak, omdat ek daardeur soveel meer vir my gemeenskap kan doen. “Die boek is tans by Windhoek Buchhandlung, The Red Shelf en die Namibia Craft Centre in Windhoek beskikbaar. Bel mense en dreig om geld te betaal weens een of ander sogenaamde misdryf wat hulle gepleeg het of oortreding wat hulle begaan het, anders word hulle summier toegesluit of kom haal om in die hof te verskyn. Let asb. daarop dat geen polisie-offisier so te werk sal gaan soos hierdie “scammers” en die betaling van geld sal eis nie. Daar is voorgeskrewe maniere (bv. lasbriewe wat uitgereik moet word), voordat mense in hegtenis geneem word of in die hof moet verskyn. En verder: as julle weet dat julle nie skuldig is aan of gedoen het wat die beller sê nie, moenie doen wat hulle sê nie, en moet veral nie geld betaal nie. Julle sterk hulle so net in hul kwaad en gaan verseker julle geld verloor. Of sê vir die beller hy of sy moet maar die geld self kom haal en kyk dan of hulle opdaag. Lag hulle dus af en stuur hulle in hul maai. ’n Gepaste kragwoord help ook nogal.

Ons gesin het oudergewoonte dié afgelope vakansietyd die spreekwoordelike ossewa gelaai en die Groot Trek Torrabaai toe aangedurf. Wens jy ook soms jy kan die opgewondenheid wat jy as kind oor sekere dinge ervaar het, weer terugkry? Ek onthou nog die vlinders in my maag as ons voor vieruur in die oggend sou opstaan, seker maak alles is gelaai, seker maak die katte en honde is uit die huis, en dan in die pad val. Ek sê nou ons moes vroeg opstaan, maar eintlik, uit pure opgewondenheid, het ek in elk geval nie veel geslaap nie, want “ons gaan see toe!” Langs die pad sou ons eers by Dopsteekhoogte stilhou vir ’n koppie koffie en padkos. Verder het ek en my broer (meestal ek) heelpad heerlik in die kar geslaap tot by die Springbokwater-hek. Vroegoggend het ons talle van ons mede-Torrabaaiers wat vroeg by die hek wou inkom en dus by Springbokwater oornag het, daar gekry. Daarna, vir die laaste 50 kilometer, het ons nie meer geslaap nie, want die see was net té naby! Daar gekom sou ek dalk weer maak of ek slaap om nié te help kamp opslaan nie, maar dié brokkie inligting is nie nou belangrik nie. Vandat ek kan onthou tot etlike jare voordat ek hoërskool toe is, was daar nog “long drops” op Torrabaai.

Ek hoop nie dit klink snobisties as ek dit sê nie, maar dit was beslis nie ’n ontspannende ervaring om daardie toilette te gebruik nie. Volgens my ouers het ek een keer byna onderin die “put” beland. Ek wil my nie eens voorstel wat sou gebeur het as ek wel ingeval het nie! In ieder geval was ek redelik versigtig as ek die Torra-“troon” moes besoek, en ek was beslis nie die enigste een nie! Stel jou nou voor hoe opgewonde was ons Torrabaaiers toe hulle uiteindelik besluit het om so tien jaar gelede spoeltoilette daar aan te bou. Daarbenewens het hulle ook nuwe stortgeriewe, ’n nuwe winkeltjie en sommer ’n nuwe kroeg aangebou en al dié nuwighede het sommer vreeslik luuks gevoel! Jy kon jou eie stort- en aantrekspasie geniet en daar was nie meer muf wat moont­lik nog uit my ouers se tienerjare kom wat onder die stortplankie aangepak het nie. En die ooms kon, sonder hul vrouens, ná ’n lang dag se visvangery by die kroeg gaan sit en ’n biertjie of vyf saam drink. Natuurlik het al dié bouwerk vir NWR, wat in beheer van die kamp is, etlike miljoene uit die sak gejaag (sowat sewe miljoen, volgens ’n ingeligte bron), maar dit was beslis destyds die moeite werd. Torrabaai het ’n spesiale plek in my familie en veral my gesin se harte.

Ons kan net op ons knieë bly, en God vra vir broodnodige reën. Tweede jaar dat ons hier in die noordooste geen opslag het, en bome se blare begin opkrul.

Ander sou sê: “Nee, nie ná wat ek gedoen het nie.” Ander sou sê: “Ja, beslis!” God het alle mense lief. Dit is die punt wat Paulus, die apostel van die ­heidene maak. Hy verduidelik dat God

sy beloftes nakom. Jesus, die toonbeeld van sy liefde en getrouheid, wys dat God die Jode liefhet. As ’n Jood kon Paulus sekerlik hier stop. Sy volk het immers God se beloftes ontvang. Paulus weet egter dat God se liefde vir Israel ook ’n ander doel gehad het. Jesus­se koms na die wêreld was ook die vervulling van die belofte dat God al die nasies deur Abraham sou bereik. Daarom haal Paulus ’n paar gedeeltes uit die Ou Testament aan om te bewys God se hart is oop vir die nasies. Ons is deel van hierdie nasies! Ons het baat gevind by Jesus se koms na die wêreld. Ons loof ook nou die Here omdat mense hierdie evangelie aan ons verkondig het. Hoe bevoorreg is ons tog! Deel vandag hierdie seën uit! Het God my lief? Nie “dalk” of “nee” nie, maar “natuurlik”! God kan nie jok nie. Hy het belowe. Hy het sy beloftes nagekom. In Jesus is al die beloftes van God vervul (15:8).

Ek het baie kosbare herinneringe aan dié enigste vakansiebestemming wat ek ooit as kind geken het. Nou moet ek egter ongelukkig by die “maar”-deel van my storie uitkom. Ek sal egter die negatiewe deel kort en kragtig probeer hou! NWR is veral die afgelope tyd gereeld in die nuus oor swak diens­ lewering en die vervalle toestand van sy oorde. Dit pynig my om dit te sê, maar ons liewe Torra is geen uitsondering nie. Die infrastruktuur wat die kamp etlike jare gelede nog heel luuks laat lyk het, is besig om uitmekaar te val, en sover ek kan sien, doen niemand regtig iets omtrent die situasie nie. Die nuwe toilette wat hulle destyds by die Springbokwaterhek aangebou het, is onbruikbaar, só vuil is dit. Ek sal veel eerder agter die kar gaan hurk as om op daardie smerige toiletsitplek te gaan sit. Die kamptoilette word nog gereeld skoongemaak, maar ruite wat uitval, word met karton toegeplak en muurteëls wat loskom, word doodeenvoudig uitgekap. Daar hang ook ’n reuk daarbinne wat ek as “ou plaasdam” sal beskryf. Die storte staan nog, maar behalwe vir die buitensporige kampfooie wat mens deesdae moet betaal, moes ons aan die begin van die vakansie kwansuis nog ekstra stortgeld ook betaal. Die winkeltjie was nog altyd

effens belaglik duur, maar nou is dit nie eens meer ’n grap nie. ’n Gewone pakkie Simba-tjips kos N$15. Maak maar seker jy vat jou eie whiskey­ voorraad saam, want ’n bottel Jameson sal jou deesdae N$780 by die kampwinkeltjie uit die sak jaag. Deesdae sit die NWR-personeel wat oor die vakansie daar moet werk, gereeld by die kroeg met ’n glas bier in die hand. Dit is volgens my onprofessioneel en skrik die vakansiegangers af. My oupa- en oumagrootjie Du Plessis was in 1957 een van die eerste vyf gesinne wat met toestemming daar gaan kamp het. Dis vir my hartseer om te sien hoe die mense wat die plek oorspronklik opgebou het tot wat dit ’n paar jaar gelede was, die oorspronklike Torrabaaiers, jaar ná jaar al minder word. En die verval van ’n plek waar ek soveel kosbare herinneringe het, is ’n hartseer gesig.

ie Namibiese Welwitschias se bestemde terugkeer na deelname aan die 2023 Curriebeker eersteliga – vir die eerste keer sedert 2018 – gaan gepaard met ’n veranderde kompetisieformaat waarin twee Europese klubs ook ingesluit is om saam met die Suid-Afrikaanse provinsiale unies, asook spanne van Kenia en Zimbabwe mee te ding. Diables Barcelona, ’n Spaanse beroepsklub, het in 2021 met deelname aan die Toyota-­ uitdaagtoernooi sy toetrede tot die Suid-Afrikaanse toneel gemaak. Die Israeliese franchise Tel Aviv Heat, wat in die Europese Superbeker meeding, is ook in die Curriebeker eersteliga ingesluit. Tel Aviv Heat het op 17 Desember in die eindstryd van die Europese Superbeker gespeel, maar is deur die verdedigende titelhouer­Black Lion van Georgië met 29-17 verslaan. Die Namibiese flank Prince !Gaoseb was in 2022 die spankaptein van Tel Aviv Heat, met sy gewese Unam-spanmaat Max Katjijeko (slot) wat saam met hom in die finaal in Tblisi gespeel het. Beide !Gaoseb en Katjijeko is tans saam met hul Namibiese spanmaats wat reeds verlede week by die Hage Geingob-­ stadion hul voorbereiding op die komende seisoen begin het. Die Namibiese o.20-span se twee nuwe afrigters, wat dié taak by Botha oorneem, is Ryan de la Harpe en Jaco Engels. hile the domestic economy is expected to record its best growth rate since 2015 in 2022, global growth slowdown will weigh on Namibia’s performance this year, analysts say. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimates the global economy to decelerate to 2.7% in 2023. According to PSG Economic Outlook, the global growth slowdown in 2023 will take some shine off the recent impressive performances of Namibia’s diamond mining and manufacturing industry and also slow down the recovery

in tourism. The robust rebound in private consumption following the 2020 lockdowns will also fade fast this year as the positive impact of reopening the economy tapers off, export earnings moderate, fiscal stimulus is curbed, and interest rates remain elevated, PSG added. The latest quarterly gross domestic product (GDP) growth figures by the Namibia Statistic Agency (NSA) indicate that the domestic economy expanded by 6.6%, 6% and 4.3% during the first, second and third quarter of 2022, respectively. PSG projects Namibia’s real GDP to grow by 3.9% in 2022, before mod-

The first monetary policy announcement for the year is expected to take place on 15 February. Domestic inflation averaged 6.1% in 2022 which was mainly driven by transport and food. PSG anticipates inflation to average 5.0% this year. “We expect transport price inflation to remain in double digits in first quarter of 2023 due to base effects, but to ease significantly over the re-

mainder of the year thanks to the lower global oil price,” PSG added. The ministry and energy recently announced a reduction in fuel prices. Fin24 yesterday reported that huge sanctions are looming for Russia’s diesel exports. From February 5, the European Union, the G-7 and its allies will attempt to impose a cap on the price of Russia’s fuel exports — the latest punishment for its invasion of Ukraine. That will coincide with an EU prohibition on almost all imports of Russian oil products. Similar measures are already in place on the country’s crude shipments, but it is the cap and ban on refined fuels — and in particular diesel — that has some oil-market watchers concerned about the potential for price spikes. - [email protected]

COMPANY NEWS IN BRIEF TENCENT FIRES MORE THAN 100 ­EMPLOYEES Chinese tech giant Tencent said Monday it had fired more than a hundred employees for violating company policies, with some referred to police and later found guilty of bribery and embezzlement. The Hong Kong-listed company is the world’s top video game maker and the owner of popular super-app WeChat but has struggled under a broad regulatory crackdown on China’s tech sector initiated in late 2020. In a statement, the firm - which in November posted its second consecutive quarterly decline in revenue - said it had found more than 100 employees guilty of violating its anti-fraud policy. More than 10 were transferred to China’s public security organ, it added, accusing them of “bribery or occupation”. “In response to the problems of corruption and fraud within the company, Tencent’s Anti-Fraud Investigation Department continued to strengthen its crackdown and investigated and dealt with a series of violations with common problems,” the firm said. “The number of cases and personnel investigated and dealt with throughout 2022 has increased compared with 2021,” it added. Those accused were found to have embezzled company funds and accepting bribes, it added, with a number referred to police and some found guilty in court. A number of those fired and accused of corruption were part of the company’s PCG arm, which oversees the its mammoth content output from news to sports and movies. But they also span Tencent’s other businesses, including cloud computing and fintech. Most notably, one employee was found guilty of “accepting bribes from non-state employees” and sentenced to three years in jail, the company said.

MTN GETS US$773 MILLION GHANA TAX BILL MTN, Africa’s largest wireless carrier, said it’s received a US$773 million back-tax bill, including penalties and interest charges, in Ghana that it plans to fight. The bill is for the period between 2014 and 2018 and implies that MTN under-declared its revenue in the country by 30%, the company said in a statement on Friday. TRANSNET REACHES SETTLEMENT WITH LIEBHERR The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) and Transnet have reached a settlement agreement with Liebherr, a Swiss-based equipment manufacturing company, over the irregular awarding of two tenders for the supply of cranes to Transnet. The SIU said on Friday the agreement was reached on 31 December 2022 by the SIU, Transnet and Liebherr to set aside and review the tenders, which were awarded in 2013 and 2014. The SIU found that the decision to award the tenders was irregular. It is envisaged that the review application will be launched this year. At around the same time that the tenders were awarded, Liebherr made a US$3.2 million, or R54 million, payment to a sales agent called Accurate Investments Limited. Accurate Investments has been linked by AmaBhungane to a series of kickback schemes allegedly linked to the Gupta family. The total sum that Liebherr paid to the sales agent has been repaid to Transnet as part of the settlement, despite the SIU finding no evidence that the payments made were corrupt or fraudulent. TWITTER SUED OVER DATA LEAK Twitter was sued over an alleged data leak that may have exposed the information of more than 200 million users but which the company denied was caused by a flaw in its system. New York state resident Stephen Gerber claims his personal information was among the cache of data obtained by hackers between 2021 and 2022. He sued Friday in San Francisco federal court seeking class-action status for all those whose information was leaked. Gerber blames a defect in Twitter’s application programming interface (API) that allowed cybercriminals to obtain usernames, emails and phone numbers of users of the social media website. In January, an anonymous user on the hacker site BreachForums published a database that they claimed to contain basic information on hundreds of millions of Twitter users. Twitter said in a blog post that there was “no evidence that the data being sold online was obtained by exploiting a vulnerability of Twitter systems”. “The data is likely a collection of data already publicly available online through different sources,” the company said. Gerber claims in the complaint that Twitter “seemingly buried its head in the sand” and says the company may have tried to hide the magnitude of the leak. Twitter “to this day, has inexplicably failed to notify or contact the victims of this particular API exploitation”, Gerber said. Gerber is seeking unspecified monetary damages, likely to exceed $5 million, and court orders requiring Twitter to hire thirdparty security auditors to test and audit its systems as well as to implement and

LABOUR DEPT TO HELP INJURED WORKERS AT ASTRAL The Department of Employment and Labour said it would be helping workers injured during an incident at an Astral Foods’ poultry facility to access compensation benefits. Similar efforts would be made for the families of the two workers killed in the incident which took place last Sunday at Astral’s County Fair facility in Klipheuwel, Agter Paarl. Speaking to News24 after a visit to the facility and the families of the two deceased workers, Employment and Labour Minister Thulas Nxesi said the department would also be “looking at the company” to make sure it was complying with regulations. “We have met with the management at County Fair and we have been able to listen to what they are saying. All we could say at this stage is we have indicated there is an investigation that is already going on by our inspectors and we have been told them about the prohibition of that area where the accident happened until such time that everything has been cleared and there is no danger there.” He said the department would allow the investigation by its inspectors to take its course. “It is unfortunate that lives have been lost and we will go and pass on our condolences to the families,” he said. Astral, which is South Africa’s largest poultry producer, said on Thursday that the incident took place at 13:00 while the men were working at the waste disposal plant, “which is separate to the main plant and which does not have any septic pits”. – Fin24

A

n unprecedented chunk of the global diesel market, the workhorse fuel of the global economy, is just weeks away from being subject to aggressive sanctions. From February 5, the European Union, the G-7 and its allies will attempt to impose a cap on the price of Russia’s fuel exports – the latest punishment for its invasion of Ukraine. That will coincide with an EU prohibition on almost all imports of Russian oil products. Similar measures are already in place on the country’s crude shipments, but it is the cap and ban on refined fuels — and in particular diesel — that has some oil-market watchers concerned about the potential for price spikes. Prior to its invasion of Ukraine, Russia was Europe’s largest external supplier of the fuel and the continent has continued to buy in big volumes right up to the cutoff. As a result, the sanctions are likely to see a great rerouting of global diesel flows – aided by Russia’s new crude buyers sending fuel back to Europe. In the short-term, there’s a risk of higher prices. “The loss of Russian barrels is huge and replacing them will be a huge logistical challenge,” said Keshav Lohiya, founder of consultant Oilytics. “But the market is pricing in less panic as markets and trade flows have proven resilient. This will be a new rerouting of diesel.” The European Union will have to replace about 600 000 barrels a day of diesel imports, and Russia will need to find new buyers for those supplies, store the fuel on ships, or cut production at its refineries. Shipments into the EU from the US and India have already been on the rise as they produce more than they consume, allowing them to export their surfeit. China is also expected to send more of the fuel into its nearby markets, indirectly pushing cargoes from other suppliers toward Europe.

“Product flows from net-long regions will intensify as the continent’s embargo on Russian products takes effect February 5th, which we see compounding a tight diesel situation,” Bernstein analysts including Oswald Clint wrote in a note to clients. India’s role in supplying Europe is notable because it has become one of the biggest buyers of discounted Russian crude since the war broke out. A big increase in Indian diesel flows would all-but guarantee that Russian crude was being purchased and refined into diesel in India before being sold back to Europe. Such a trade wouldn’t breach the EU’s rules, but it highlights the inefficiency inherent in the sanctions. Essentially, hydrocarbons will be transported thousands of miles further than would normally be the case – and then back again. There’s also the potential for murkier practices, such as redocuat Standard Chartered Plc in London. “They’re trying to reinforce that there is a different model for how to develop” than relying on China. Her meetings in Senegal and South Africa will bracket a visit to Zambia, seen as a proving ground for democracy in southern Africa and for debt relief prospects among heavily indebted countries worldwide. Yellen on Friday in Senegal will deliver what the Treasury is billing as “major remarks on the US-African economic relationship.” Senegal, where she’ll meet President Macky Sall, is expected to have the fastestgrowing economy in Africa this year and is currently chair of the African Union. In Zambia, she’ll meet with President Hakainde Hichilema, a oncejailed opposition leader who has pursued democratic and economic reforms. Under Hichilema’s predecessor, Edgar Lungu, the US threatened to sanction officials from the then-ruling party if they tried to rig the 2021 elections.

annual house price appreciation, area demand, and rental prices in the area. Both home buyers and investors need to consider that, unless they plan to flip the property, most real estate investments are a long-term investment strategy that can take at least five to ten years to mature. “If the property a buyer purchases is not their forever home, they need to remember that it takes a while to build up enough equity in the home to help them climb the property ladder,” Goslett says. “There are also various costs that they will need to cover when buying a new home – such as transfer duties, and bond registration costs – and selling the current home, such as compliance certificates, a municipal rates clearance certificate, and an agent’s commission. “Even if it is just a starter home, I would advise home buyers to purchase a property that they will be comfortable living in for at least five years. This will allow the market enough time to appreciate in value to help them afford the costs of upgrading to a larger home,” he recommends.

If your goal as a property investor is to set yourself up for future financial security, then Goslett also advises against prematurely selling the property before it has had enough time to appreciate in value. “Perform the necessary calculations on what to expect on monthly rental returns to make sure that you can afford to hold onto the home for around five to ten years before selling,” says Goslett. As a final word of advice to investors, Goslett suggests that the year ahead might present the perfect conditions in which to purchase more investment properties. “All market indicators seem to point to house price appreciation slowing in 2023. If this is the case, it might not be the best time to sell, but it could present the opportunity to build out your real estate portfolio so that you have two or three properties benefitting from the solid longterm growth we are bound to see once the market recovers.
