Research Dossier

1. Submission of work a. Competitions Competitions are part of the commissioning bodies in the screenwriting industry. They help new writers get commissioned and make their first steps into working with producers/production companies.

Competitions 1. Studio 21 Drama Series Script Competition Studio21's competition is produced in association with Script Angel, C21Media, and The Writers Room. Their goal is to discover new writers and connect them with coproduction partners. It is open to international writers, represented and non-represented, and to writing teams of up to two people, all 18 years old or over. They accept all genres and themes, but they require the projects to be live-action fiction.

Guidelines The contestants must make three submissions, and each of them has a set list of guidelines. 1. Pilot script: The pilot script must be written in the English language and should be between 30 and 60 pages long, each of them numbered. It should be formatted to industry standard and must not have been entered for any other competition (past or current) or optioned to a third party. 2. Series statement: The series statement must be 1-4 pages and should include a one-paragraph description at the top, stating the series concept, and a brief description of the series story beyond the pilot episode. Contestants might also include a personal statement about why they wrote it and why the idea stands out; the themes they're hoping to explore in the show; the marketability of the show. 3. Industry reference: Each entry should be supported by a reference, pasted into the reference box on the submission form, and should only be a single paragraph, which says “I support the entry of ‘writer name’ for ‘script name’." It should include the referee’s name, their position within the industry and their contact details; the referee can be: literary agent/manager, producer, development executive, drama commissioner, script editor, experienced screenwriter, or screenwriting course tutor. •

Awards

The winner of the competition will receive various prizes, such as:

• A £10,000 project script option from Studio21 to develop the project and connect with leading drama producers to co-produce for the global market. • Exposure at Content London to all executives in attendance. • A complimentary ticket to the three-day Content London event or digital alternative.

The six finalists receive: • Exposure at Content London to all executives in attendance. • A complimentary ticket to the three-day Content London or digital alternative. • A development consultation with Script Angel founder Hayley McKenzie to discuss feedback on their submitted project.

2. London International Screenwriting Competition The London International Screenwriting Competition is a regular event that focuses on the first 10 pages of a script, which is what they consider to be the determining factor of getting noticed by agents in Hollywood and Soho. • The scripts should be submitted in standard screenplay format and font • The entry fees are non-refundable. • Contestants can submit multiple scripts but must pay a separate entrance fee for each of them. • Contestants can submit feature, TV or short scripts of any length, but only the first 10 pages will be judged, • The winner will receive a free 45-minute career consultation with one of LSC's experts, a free 3-page full Script Coverage, and a free lifetime access to LSC-AI Black List/Oscars Neural Network. • The finalists will receive a free lifetime access to the LSC-AI Neural Network.

b. Commissioning bodies BBC Writersroom BBC Writersroom is an online extension of the BBC website, which discovers new writers and helps them develop a screenwriting career. They offer online submissions and screenwriting competitions in order to help writers get commissioned and make their first steps into the industry.

BBC Writersroom's Open Call The BBC Writersroom Open Call is a distinct submission window for scripts, announced on the BBC Writersroom website, and is only available for a limited amount of time every time it is opened. They accept Drama or Comedy/Drama scripts written for Film, TV, Radio, Stage or Online including for Children, and the submission is free. The script should be a minimum of 30 pages long (excluding title/character pages). On their website, they state "Generally speaking a half-hour drama or comedy/drama would come in between 30 and 35 pages, an hour-long drama between 5070 pages, and a feature film between 70-120 pages." The screenplay should also be saved as a single PDF document of no more than 10MB in size, and should not contain the name of the contestant or any contact detail within the pages or in the document title. The contestants should be over the age of 18 and should apply from within the UK or Ireland.

2. Background material (for concept / ideas generation) a. This is a screenplay format example in which I have identified the key terms. • The slug line: tells us where and when the action is taking place (inside or outside; the location; day or night) • The scene direction: describes the events of the scene • The character cue: is the name of the character who speaks, always written in capitals • The actor direction: describes the way or to whom the character speaks • The dialogue: what the character is saying

b. Inspiration As a writer, there is a lot of sources where inspiration can come from, such as books, other films/TV shows, newspapers, real life events (factual information), art etc. 1. Books Little Women (2019), written and directed by Greta Gerwig, is a coming-of-age period drama film, and it's the seventh film adapted from American novelist Louisa May Alcott's coming of age novel with the same title, written in two parts, first one getting published in 1868, with the second one following closely the year after. In the process of writing the screenplay, Gerwig used Alcott's other writings, her letters and diaries, as well as 19th-century paintings of young women as inspirations.

2. Other films/TV shows

3. Newspaper articles

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), written and directed by Wes Craven, is an American horror/supernatural slasher film, based on a series of newspaper articles from the Los Angeles Times which reported on a series of deaths in Southeast Asia where young men died in the middle of terrifying nightmares. When Craven read these articles, he was inspired to make A Nightmare on Elm Street.

4. Real life events Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (2022) is a crime thriller/biographical drama created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan about the real-life serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. There is no exact source to state how the creators got inspired or about the research they did since the show is so new, but we can guess how the research process went since there are a lot of sources available for this case, such as Jeffrey's interviews, victim interviews, police records, evidence etc.

3. Research (for an idea, once conceived)

b. Primary sources for own screenplay idea: since my idea is completely fictional and inspired by existing films, I did not need to use any primary sources when generating it, other than (moving) photographs and director interviews.

a. Primary source: A primary source is original information about an event, person, object, product, or work that is not accompanied by analysis, opinion, or commentary. They can take the form of theses, dissertations, scholarly journal articles (research based), some government reports, symposia and conference proceedings, original artwork, poems, photographs, speeches, letters, memos, personal narratives, diaries, interviews, autobiographies, correspondence etc.

c. Secondary sources: A secondary source offers an analysis or restatement of a primary source. It summarizes, interprets, reorganizes, or provides an added value to a primary source. They can take the form of textbooks, edited works, books and articles that interpret or review research works, histories, biographies, literary criticism and interpretation, reviews of law and legislation, political analyses and commentaries.

d. Secondary sources for own screenplay idea: for developing my script, I will use secondary sources such as magazine articles, reviews, and other films.

4. Prepare material (for your own idea, once conceived) a. What are the advantages and disadvantages of primary and secondary sources? 1. Advantages of primary sources: • Resolves a specific research issue • There is better accuracy • Up-to-date information 2. Disadvantages of primary sources: • They are more expensive • They are time-consuming • They have a lot of limitations

3. Advantages of secondary sources: • Easy to access • Low cost • Time-saving • Generating new understanding and insight • Any person can collect the data 4. Disadvantages of secondary research: • Might not be specific to your needs • Lack of control over the quality of data • Biasness • Not timely

b. What material / information has been the most useful for you and your script idea? For my idea, secondary sources have been more useful. I have looked at Don't Worry Darling (2022) and The Truman Show (1998) for the narrative, and took inspiration from Shameless (2011-2021) for the spaces and places (along with DWD). I have also made use of one primary source, which is directors interviews in which they discuss the vision behind the film and the creative process.

c. Where you have disregarded information that you have found, relevant to your own idea, why did you decide not to use it? So far in the planning process, I have not had any information that would have to be disregarded.

d. How are you managing the information you have found? What methods of storage/organisation/documenting are you using? I keep the useful information I have found in relation to my idea either on paper, in a folder, or in the notes app of my phone. The second storage method allows me to access the information quicker, while the first one is better for keeping it organised.
