Many parents wonder how they can better prepare their elementary-age students for success in school. For a child, developing reading skills and reading at the correct grade level is one of the most important skills they need. In this edition of Roots, we look at several tips and activities on how parents can support and help develop their children’s reading skills. The following activities can be done from your home and will help your student become a strong reader.



Visiting the library often. There are many exciting activities for the entire family and they are free!



Being your child’s best advo-

cate. Keep informed about your child’s progress in reading and ask the teacher about ways you can help. It is extremely important for you, as a parent, to know if your student is acquiring the necessary skills to be a proficient reader. If you fear your student is not a strong reader call your child’s school and talk his teacher. During your conversation with your child’s teacher, the teacher might say that the student is “At level/On Target”. This designation means that he is reading at the proper grade level. That is good news. As a parent, you might ask what skills students should be learning and what types of activities can be done at home to support the learning. The teacher might also say that the student is “At Some Risk”. He/she will have some of the skills needed at that grade level but not all. That student will need supplemental support in school and at home.

When a child is “At Risk” you should ask his/her teacher what skills the child will need to have supported and what activities can be done at home to support the development of those skills. If your students shows limited or no reading skills, the teachers will designate him “At High Risk”. This student will need intensive intervention to develop the skills needed to be an effective reader. With a child “At High Risk” you will want to know more about the types of intervention services the school provides. You should also ask what are the skills that your child needs to be a proficient ready/writer. It is also important to know the types of activities that you should do at home to support your child’s development. Remember that when parents and teachers come together, students succeed. Other Services Available to Migrant Families, Part 3 In last month’s edition of the Roots newsletter, the Program described some services available to families that are part of our program. In this edition, we look at programs and projects that

families and students can use for their benefit. From ESL classes provided by El Maestro en Casa to GED, program and a Summer Camp in June 2015, these projects will

maintain our families active in education. For more information on these programs and projects, please contact your district advocate or our Program’s office.

Conversar con su hijo cuando estén juntos.

Leer juntos todos los días. Ser un lector y un escritor. Sus hijos lo admiran y harán lo que usted hace.



Visitar la biblioteca . Hay muchas actividades interesantes para toda la familia y son gratis!



Ser el defensor de su hijo. Manténgase informado sobre el progreso de su hijo en lectura y pregúntele a la

maestra (o) acerca de las maneras en las que usted puede ayudar. Es extremadamente importante que usted, como padre, sepa si su hijo (a) está adquiriendo las habilidades necesarias para ser un buen lector. Si sospecha que su hijo (a) no es un buen lector llame a la escuela de su hijo y pida hablar con su maestro (a). Durante su conversación con el maestro (a) de su hijo (a), este (a) podría decir que su estudiante está "A nivel". Esta designación significa que está leyendo en el nivel adecuado. Como padre, usted puede preguntar sobre las habilidades que están aprendiendo los estudiantes y qué tipo de actividades se pueden hacer en casa para apoyar el aprendizaje. El profesor (a) también podría decir que el estudiante está con "cierto nivel de riesgo". Su hijo (a) tendría algunas de las habilidades necesarias en ese grade escolar, pero no todas. Ese estudiante necesitará apoyo complementario en la escuela y en casa. Cuando un niño tiene "cierto nivel de riesgo" usted debe pre-

guntar a su maestro sobre cuáles habilidades de lectura necesitarán apoyo y qué actividades se pueden hacer en casa para apoyar el desarrollo de esas habilidades. Si su hijo (a) muestra destrezas bajas en lectura, los maestros lo designarán como "en alto riesgo o nivel muy bajo". Este estudiante necesitará apoyo intensivo para desarrollar las habilidades necesarias para ser un lector eficaz. Con un niño "en alto riesgo o nivel muy bajo" usted querrá saber más acerca de los tipos de servicios de apoyo que ofrece la escuela. Usted también debe preguntar cuáles son las habilidades que su hijo (a) necesita para ser un buen escritor. También es importante conocer los tipos de actividades que debe hacer en casa para apoyar el desarrollo de su hijo. Recuerde que cuando los padres y los profesores trabajan juntos, los estudiantes tienen éxito. En la edición de noviembre de Raíces, describimos algunos servicios a disposición de las familias que forman parte de nuestro programa. En esta edición, nos fijamos en los programas y proyectos adicionales que las familias

y los estudiantes pueden utilizar para su beneficio. Desde clases de Inglés proporcionados por El Maestro en Casa a un campamento de verano en junio de 2015, estos proyectos manten-

drán a padres de familia y estudiantes activos en la educación. Para obtener más información sobre estos programas y proyectos, por favor póngase en contacto con su asesor estudiantil o con la oficina de nuestro programa.

Regional parent workshops: The MMEP will sponsor 5 regional parent workshops which will include health screenings and additional PAC requested presentations for migrant families. While there are community health fairs available from other resources, not all migrant families qualify for health community resources, nor do all community health fairs focus on migrant families only. All migrant families will be invited to attend. The events will include collaboration with other vendors, educational children activities, speakers and mini -health fairs. Professional support: Parent leadership training specialists will be invited to present about strategies for parents to become more active in their children's education and take leadership roles in their school/district Advisory Committees or within the community to support the education of all students. ESL classes: The MMEP will be offering ESL classes using El Maestro en Casa program. Those classes will be available for parents and Out-of -School Youths (OSY). The MMEP will sponsoring the program for 220 participants Communication and monthly newsletters: Migrant families will be informed by mail about their child’s progress in school as well as other resources that could be available to them. Also, a monthly newsletter will be distributed with updates about the program and important dates on community services. Over 300 migrant families will be receiving these communications. GED program: In collaboration with Aims Community College, MMEP will work on the creation/implementation of a GED program. Out of School Youth and parents will have the opportunity to obtain their GED free of cost in a very convenient locations in their local community. The classes are scheduled to start January 27, 2015 at Crawford Elementary. For more details about this and other GED programs, please contact your local Advocate or Recruiter. Binational program: The MMEP will be participating in the Binational program. This state initiative involves the exchange of teachers from both Mexico and Colorado. The focus of the program is the exchange of instructors who share their expertise about their home educational systems and the cultural competencies. Two teachers from both systems will participate in the exchange program. Summer camp and activities: MMEP will plan summer (June) activities to keep 100 students and families engaged in education. Parents will be provided training on how to access online resources, navigate the educational system, check on student progress and attendance online, etc. The Binational Mexico teachers will be involved in those activities.

Our Community Celebrations: 

On December 12th, many Catholic Mexicans will celebrate the Day of the Virgin Guadalupe, Mexico’s patron saint. On that day, thousands of Catholics make a pilgrimage from all over the country to the Basilica of Guadalupe, located in Mexico City.



GED Opportunities for Migrant Families! The Migrant Education Program is looking for 20-30 parents and out of school youth in the Aurora/Denver area that are interested in earning their GED for FREE. For more information, please contact Alma Lozano at 303-907-2821 and read the story on page 5.

Talleres regionales de padres: El MMEP patrocinará 5 talleres regionales para padres que incluirán exámenes de salud y presentaciones para las familias migrantes. Si bien hay ferias de salud disponibles en la comunidad, no todas las familias migrantes tienen derecho a los recursos comunitarios de salud, ni tampoco todas las ferias de salud de la comunidad se centran en sólo las familias migrantes. Se invitará a todos a asistir. Los eventos incluirán actividades educativas para niños, presentadores y mini-ferias de salud. Apoyo profesional: Se invitará a especialistas en capacitación de liderazgo para padres a presentar acerca de las estrategias para que los padres se involucren más en la educación de sus hijos y tomen puestos de liderazgo en su escuela / distrito, Comités Asesórales o dentro de la comunidad para apoyar la educación de todos los estudiantes. Clases de inglés como segundo idioma El MMEP estará ofreciendo clases de inglés como segundo idioma utilizando el programa de El Maestro en Casa. Estas clases estarán disponibles para los padres y jóvenes que están fuera de la escuela (OSY). El MMEP patrocina el programa para 220 participantes Comunicación y boletines mensuales: Las familias migrantes serán informadas por correo sobre el progreso de su hijo en la escuela así como de otros recursos que podrían estar disponibles para ellos. Además, un boletín mensual de noticias se distribuye con información actualizada sobre el programa y las fechas importantes en los servicios comunitarios. Más de 300 familias migrantes van a recibir estas comunicaciones. Programa de GED: En colaboración con Aims Community College, MMEP trabajará en la creación / implementación de un programa de GED. Los padres y jóvenes que están fuera de la escuela tendrán la oportunidad de obtener su GED gratis en lugares cercanos a su comunidad. Las clases están programadas para comenzar 27 de enero 2015 en Crawford Elementary School. Para más detalles sobre este y otros programas de GED, por favor póngase en contacto con su asesor local o reclutador. Programa Binacional: El MMEP estará participando en el programa binacional. Esta iniciativa estatal es un intercambio de maestros de México y Colorado. El enfoque del programa es el intercambio de educadores que comparten sus conocimientos acerca de sus sistemas educativos de origen y las competencias culturales. Dos maestros de ambos sistemas participarán en el programa de intercambio. El campamento de verano y actividades: MMEP planificará actividades de verano (junio) para mantener a 100 estudiantes y sus familias involucrados en la educación. Los padres recibirán capacitación sobre la forma de acceder a los recursos por internet, navegar por el sistema educativo, revisar el progreso de los estudiantes y la asistencia escolar mediante el uso de internet, etc. Los maestros mexicanos del Programa Binacional estarán involucrados en esas actividades.

El 12 de diciembre, muchos católicos mexicanos celebraran el Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe, patrona de México. En ese día, miles de católicos hacen una peregrinación de todo el país a la Basílica de Guadalupe, ubicada en la Ciudad de México.



GED Opportunities for Migrant Families It is never too late to earn your high school education. Starting in January of 2015, Migrant families will be able to enroll in General Education Development (GED) classes with the aim of passing the GED test and earning the certification. These classes will be completely free of charge to Migrant families. In this country, a high school education is a stepping stone to success. Today, many jobs require a GED certificate or a high school diploma. Even in jobs that do not require the certification, opportunities for advancement and promotion may be limited for only those that have a high school diploma or GED certificate. For these reasons, the Migrant Program in collaboration with the BUENO HEP program is sponsoring GED lessons in Aurora. The lessons will begin in January and they will be hosted at Crawford Elementary (1600 Florence St, Aurora, CO 80010). The classes will begin on January 27 and PAGE

will be on Tuesdays s and Thursdays from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Through the instructor, provided by the BUENO HEP program, Migrant parents and youth interested in earning their GED certificate will learn the content needed to pass the GED test. The materials will be provided for the classes and for the test and there are NO fees for the classes. This is a special opportunity for Migrant families. Advocate Biography: Veronica Carrasco

Veronica Carrasco has recently joined the MMEP team as an Advocate for Early Childhood Education. She will be serving parents and children of ages 0-5. She is passionate about working with young children and very enthusiastic about meeting all the families in the program. Veronica has worked for elementary schools in Arequipa, Peru and in Madrid, Spain. She is an immigrant from Venezuela and she has lived in Colorado for 15 years. Oportunidades de GED para familias migrantes Nunca es demasiado tarde para completar la educación secundaria. A partir de enero del 2015, las familias migrantes podrán inscribirse en clases del Desarrollo de Educación General (GED, pos sus siglas en inglés.) con el objetivo de pasar el examen de GED y recibir la certificación que equivale a la preparatoria. Estas clases serán totalmente gratuitas para las familias migrantes. En este país, la educación secundaria es un paso en el camino hacia el éxito. Hoy en día, muchos trabajos requieren un certificado GED o un diploma de escuela preparatoria. Incluso en los trabajos que no requieren la certificación, las oportunidades de promoción pueden ser limitadas y disponibles sólo para aquellos que tienen un diploma de escuela preparatoria o certificado GED. Por estas razones, el Programa Migrante, en colaboración con el programa BUENO HEP, patrocinará clases de GED en Aurora. Las clases comenzarán en PAGE

enero y tendrá lugar en la primaria de Crawford (1600 Florence St, Aurora, CO 80010). Las clases comienzan el 27 de enero y serán los martes y jueves de las 5:30 pm a las 7:30 pm. A través del instructor, proporcionado por el programa Bueno HEP, los padres migrantes y los jóvenes interesados en obtener su certificado de GED aprenderán el contenido necesario para pasar el examen de GED. Verónica Carrasco es nueva en nuestro programa y servirá como asesora de niños en edades 0-5 años. Ella trabajará con los padres y sus hijos en lo referente a estrategias de lecto-escritura y matemáticas que se pueden implementar en casa. Verónica ha trabajado para las escuelas primarias en Arequipa, Perú, y en Madrid, España. A ella le gusta todo lo relacionado con educación infantil y está muy entusiasmada de conocer a todas las familias en el programa.
