1. Foreword This publication presents the results corresponding to the Rural Tourist Accommodation Occupancy Survey. The most important information from the survey is offered monthly, in agreement with the Institute's dissemination regulations. The data provided reflects the two aspects considered when analysing tourist trends: with regard to demand, there is information on travellers, overnight stays and average stay, distributed by residence of the travellers, or by Autonomous Community of origin in the case of Spanish travellers; in terms of supply, the information includes the estimated number of establishments open for the season, estimated number of bedplaces, estimated number of rooms, occupancy rate and information on employment in the sector. This information is presented monthly for the national scope, by Autonomous Community, province, area and site with the highest number of overnight stays.
Ine. National Statistics Institute
The National Statistics Institute would like to show its appreciation to all professionals, businesspersons and institutions related to the tourist sector for the collaboration provided, which has been essential in conducting this survey.

2. Objectives
Ine. National Statistics Institute
The main objective of the Tourist Accommodation Occupancy Survey (Rural Tourism Accommodation) is to ascertain the behaviour of a series of variables which allow us to describe the basic characteristics of this type of accommodation within the tourist sector, from both supply and demand points of view, so that the need for knowledge regarding this sector by national organisations, and the requirements of international organisations are thus addressed.
4
3. Statistical unit These are all Rural Tourism Accommodation Establishments, registered as such in the corresponding register from each Autonomous Community, in accordance with the definitions which for said accommodation appear in the different Autonomous Community regulations. Rural Tourism Accommodation Establishments are those establishments or dwellings intended for tourist accommodation, in exchange for a price with or without any other complementary services which are registered in the corresponding Register of each Autonomous Community. These establishments usually present a specific set of characteristics:
a) They are located in a rural environment. b) They are constructions with an architectonic style that is characteristic of the area, or they are located on land properties which maintain active livestock and farming operations (agrotourism). c) They offer a limited number of beplaces and bedrooms for the accommodation of guests, and they comply with certain infrastructure and basic services requirements.
Rural tourism accommodation may adopt one of these two rental modalities, or both: - the complete-use letting modality is described as the complete hiring of the property for the exclusive use of the contractor,
Ine. National Statistics Institute
- the shared-use letting modality is defined as the individualised hiring of bedrooms within the family dwelling itself.
5
4. Survey Scope All establishments and/or operating companies in the country are researched.
Ine. National Statistics Institute
With the exception of Ceuta and Melilla, where there are no establishments of this type.
6
5. Definition of variables 5.1 Estimated open rural tourism accommodation establishments Number of seasonally opened rural tourism accommodation establishments estimated by the survey. Seasonally opened rural tourism accommodation establishments are those where the month of reference is included within their opening period.
5.2 Estimated bedplaces in a rural tourism accommodation establishment Number of bedplaces estimated by the survey of the seasonally opened rural tourism accommodation establishments. The bedplaces of a rural tourism accommodation establishment are understood to be the number of fixed beds available in it; therefore, supplementary beds are not included, and double beds give rise to two bedplaces.
5.3 Traveller All persons who stay one or more nights in the same accommodation. Travellers are classified by their place of residence. In the case of Spaniards, information is requested on the Autonomous Community of origin.
5.4 Overnight stay. An overnight stay is understood to be each night that a traveller stays in the rural tourism accommodation establishment. For example, a married couple with a child in a supplementary bed, will be counted as an occupied room and three overnight stays or occupied bedplaces.
5.5 Average stay
5.6 Occupancy rate by bedplaces Percentage-based relationship between the number of overnight stays and the product of the bedplaces, by the days to which the overnight stays refer, including the number of supplementary beds used. It can be deduced from this definition that a rural tourist accommodation may have an occupancy rate of less than 100 percent, and yet not have any available bedplaces, as an establishment or a bedroom or double-bed may be occupied by a single person being accounted for as an overnight stay. However, the
7
Ine. National Statistics Institute
This variable is an approximation of the number of days which, on average, travellers stay at the rural tourism accommodation establishment, and is calculated as the quotient between the overnight stays and the number of travellers.
accommodation establishment or the bedroom may have a greater capacity (more bedplaces).
5.7 Weekend occupancy rate by bedplaces Percentage relationship, between the total overnight stays and the product of the bedplaces, by the two days to which the overnight stays refer (Friday and Saturday), including supplementary beds. It can be deduced from this definition that a rural tourist accommodation may have an occupancy rate of less than 100 percent, and yet not have any available bedplaces, as an establishment or a bedroom or double-bed may be occupied by a single person being accounted for as an overnight stay. However, the accommodation establishment or the bedroom may have a greater capacity (more bedplaces).
5.8 Supplementary beds Supplementary beds are those that do not have a fixed nature, and are not included in the bedplaces declared officially by the establishment and which do appear in the directory. The furniture installed permanently in the rural tourism accommodation establishment (sofa bed, foldaway bed, etc.) is only considered a supplementary bed when actually used as such. Cots will also be considered as supplementary beds.
5.9 Occupancy rate by bedroom This is the relationship, as a percentage, between the average daily number of rooms occupied during the month, and the total number of bedrooms in the sample during the same period.

6. Survey framework and sample design As the framework for the selection of the informant units, the survey uses the directories of the Tourist Offices of the Autonomous Communities and other auxiliary sources, which include, amongst other data, the following information: name, address, normal opening period, number of bedplaces, number of bedrooms, type of establishment and category in some cases.
The survey is comprehensive in all provinces, except in some modalities, for the provinces listed hereunder:

7. Estimators
The elevation of the sample of Rural Tourism accommodation establishments is carried out using, as a basis, the number of estimated bedplaces of the establishments that are open during the month. An establishment is understood to be open if the reference week is within its opening period.
E = total number of open establishments e = number of establishments that respond to the survey (incidences 1 and 2) during the month e” = number of establishments that send the XML file (incidences 1 and 2) c = number of sample establishments that are closed within their opening period (incidence 3) P= number of beplaces according to directory V= number of travellers checked-in N = number of occupied bedplaces (overnight stays) N' = number of occupied bedplaces in supplementary beds T = employed personnel ES = average stay GP = occupancy rate by bedplaces GH = occupancy rate by bedroom D = number of days of the reference month (28, 29, 30, 31) d = number of days that the establishment has been open during the reference week dm = number of days that the establishment has been open during the reference month H = total number of bedrooms in the establishment. AB = number of occupied independent accommodations B = number of occupied bedrooms (when the rent modality is not completeuse) BC = number of occupied bedrooms (when the rent modality is not shareduse) BT = total number of occupied bedrooms LH = dwellings with shared-use rent modality LC = dwellings with complete-use rent modality LA = dwellings with both rent modalities and the sub-indices used are the following: i = establishment j = province k = accommodation modality (rural hotal, rural holiday dwelling, cottage, rural hostel, active tourism, large buildings, other) m = modality (professional status, place of residence, etc.)

8. Information collection With the objective of alleviating wherever possible the work of the informants, the basic data on rural tourism accommodation establishments refers to seven consecutive days of each month, chosen randomly, in such a way that all establishments combined cover the whole month. The questionanires on rural tourism accommodation establishments are received at the specialised Provincial Delegations of the INE, where the data is filtered and recorded, and the provincial results are obtained.
Ine. National Statistics Institute
They are subsequently sent to the INE Central Services, where a second filtering is carried out, and the tables that are published monthly are compiled.
