“Think of discomfort as CURRENCY. It’s the price you pay to learn some pretty CRUCIAL THINGS..” I read this line in the book I am currently reading right now. Well, I thought of what the author was actually trying to say and trying to relate to our real life scenarios. One thing that instantly popped in my head was UVCE. Okey. Right now at this point you would be like, “Is she calling UVCE a discomfort?” My answer is Yes and No! Let me explain. UVCE being a 100 year old college has been home to many engineers and of those many are ones in our families, friends and so on, and that’s the main reason many of us chose this college (atleast a majority). In today’s racing era of private colleges who promise to provide the best of infrastructure, faculty and facilities, UVCE is generally shaded and pushed behind. At CET allotment time, many of us chose UVCE due to our friends and family recommendation or financial constraints and so on. Of the many UVCEians (in recent few years) I have interacted with till date on talking about their UVCE journey have commonly confessed to being scared or freaked out from their first rendezvous with UVCE because of its current state of infrastructure and further on how 4 years has/had been difficult with the deteriorated facilities to students and the chakars/controversies with the Bangalore University. But wait! Don’t start judging yet, let me finish. So yes that’s been the currency of discomfort that students have been paying in past few years for being a UVCEian. Asking about the pretty crucial things learnt at the cost of all this? Well the choice to join UVCE, be it forced or by choice or no choice, leaves every individual transformed at the end of the fours years. From learning handle everything on your own - compiling your own notes and study materials even whilst syllabus is outdated and resources are scarce; taking initiatives for betterment of yourself or your class or for UVCE and working towards passionately; be it boldly making the 1000th chakkar around JB without losing your reservoir of patience for revaluation or a marks card issue; working in teams and implementing ideas with bare minimum resources for fests and other technical advancements; utilizing the time and freedom in hand to streamline your self to work efficiently and much more that I can’t stop listing. Well, against the students of other colleges with all the infra and facilities our UVCEians have proved to be better whilst learning crucial things the hard way! I am also proud to say that having studied in UVCE for 4 years, of the many vital tings I have learnt, one thing is throw any problem our way and we’ll not deter to it, instead come to it in terms bravely and work the solution with patience and efficiency. That’s the will power I have got from my time at UVCE. Before I continue here’s one thing. Yes. UVCE teaches its students all the important lessons the hard way. But letting it continue that way will be helpful or can get worse in years to come? This is a very important question we need to all ponder upon at this juncture of UVCE’s 100 years completion. We need to bring in change to UVCE, in every small and big way possible. Be it infrastructure, facilities and whatever. Even though UVCE is neglected by the government, university and administrators, doing our bit to improve for generations of students to come is a responsibility that rest on us as UVCE alumni. Even if you are not able to make physical trips to college, if you wish to you can push for the change! And VisionUVCE is always with you to help! HOPEFULLY MORE THAN JUST MAKING IT ABOUT CELEBRATIONS, LETS MAKE THIS 100th YEAR OF UVCE ABOUT CHANGES FOR THE GOOD! “Flying the UVCEian spirit high!” Wondering what’s with the slogan? Well that’s not a slogan but that’s the motivation on every UVCEian’s mind these days! After the much celebrated first event of namma UVCE Centennial Celebrations, “UVCE 5K Marathon” hitting it off a great note, the energy doesn't seem to have ended but has got pumped up at an exponential level. The event was kick start for namma alumni and students to get sparked and involved in doing things for UVCE. And in short time has another event been planned from Team VisionUVCE titled “Sammilana”, an event promised to be packed with fun, memories and much more. And to add to the zing is the fact that it’s happening this Milagro where namma Alumni can enjoy the perks of both. The quadrangle is a buzz with excitement as Milagro is nearing and a gala of events are taking place in college. Remembering your good old college days? How about you all share that ? VisionUVCE is coming up with “AVALOKANA - An UVCE Memoir” as souvenir for the 100th year celebrations and you could help us with providing us articles, interviews, stories and photos—your reminiscences of fun memories in UVCE. -Chitra S Reddy, Batch of 2016 ECE EDITORIAL

We are proud and happy to inform you that the "Water Purifier" is installed in the Mechanical Department today!! Students will not have to cross roads for water now. As promised earlier, Team VisionUVCE approached the students from Mechanical students and got the opinion after Marathon on the urgent requirement. Accordingly, Rovin D’Souza from 6th sem Mechanical and Harsha S from 4th sem Mechanical agreed to co-ordinate, get the permission from the Department and get this installed in their department premises. We appreciate their efforts and helping us in this initiative. The additional amount from Centenary Marathon was put to the good use (we hope) and would like to take up more such initiatives in near future. Thanks to everyone who supported it! - VisionUVCE Team QUENCHING THE THIRST SAMMILANA’ 17 UVCE‘s very own cultural extravaganza, Milagro’ 17 is here! And we wanted the alumni to be part of it as well. We have organized a small get together coupled with some fun activities, exclusively for namma alumni. This will be a second event in the Centenary Celebrations series from VisionUVCE. We invite you to be part of the event along with your friends. Date: Saturday, 20th May, 2017 Time: 4 PM Venue: UVCE, K R Circle Welcome !! Relive the College Memories !! Witness the talent of students!!

First of all I would like to thank my family for selecting this college for me and for their encouragement, I was feeling very sad initially, now also I'm feeling very sad but it is to leave this college in another 2 months because I may not have got this much freedom in any other college. I learnt many things here, among that one thing is "SELF CONFIDENCE". I never bothered about studies or teaching faculty, I was never afraid of internals or main exams here, I have really good friends, memories of bunking classes, I enjoyed lot in survey camp GHATI , these are memorable days of my life. I will miss all my friends, faculty! -Sathish, 8th Sem Civil CAMPUS SAYS Joy, adventure, thrill, frustration, friendship, responsibility, fights, college fests, Cricket and placements. These are the words that vaguely describe my 4 years of Engineering in this prestigious college. It has been a perennial transformation in terms of personal and professional life. This college life has taught me lot of lessons about life. It has made me grow from an adolescent to an adult. Unfortunately, good times will eventually end, so is my engineering life. It is indeed saddening that I will miss those memorable moments that I had in my college life. No matter when or what, one thing is for sure. The name UVCE will bring a smile into my face. -Avinash V, 8th Sem ECE It's really hard to believe that four years have passed since I joined this college. UVCE has always been a second home to me. The things that I've learnt and the memories that I've made here are priceless. UVCE hasn't just taught me engineering, it has taught me life!! It has also gifted me with a huge bunch of friends whom I'll always hold dear to myself. I'm very sure that we all will miss the beautiful and serene campus at K R Circle once we graduate. These four years will remain etched in our memories forever without a doubt. Wherever we go, we will always carry the pride of being a UVCEian. After all, once a UVCEian, always a UVCEian!!! -Raghavendra Hegdekatte, 8th Sem CSE College started very unassumingly. First day of entering college, I could see plants growing out of the buildings, very unnerving. But as college days went on, it became apparent that UVCE isn't like any other engineering college. With freedom from assignments and compulsions that were a routine in other colleges, we could learn a lot of things. Most of the time lounging in college is the norm, we started learning new skills and tools. Participating in SAE BAJA( pronounced baha) gave a lot of experience and knowledge. It was an opportunity to work with juniors, and my own classmates to build something from all the theory we learned. The college trip too was a blast. Travelling with a small group might be fun. But a whole bus load of your classmates makes for a totally different feel in Goa. All in all, engineering in UVCE is pretty freaking amazing. - Rajesha R, 8th Sem Mech I came with lots of dreams and hopes but at the same time I doubted my choice of engineering. Now being in my final year, at the juncture of my professional life beginning I am content with my decision. In this short stay I have learnt more about my life than about engineering. Through the years I have made so many cherishable memories and friends. I spent my life in college playing and sometimes attending classes. In these 4 years my friends were the greatest source of spiritual enlightenment and teachers gave such a great insight about life where even religious texts fail. At the end of four years, I am glad and happy that I could be the part of this great institution. -Vishruth S.A, 8th Sem EEE

The first thought we had that engineering is for 4 years became virtual now, because within no time we are at the end of our engineering life. UVCE though not strong in infrastructure, made us strong to structure our life. More than just a college we had an emotional bonding with this historic beauty. More than just engineering, UVCE has taught us the values of life. Our college days were so phenomenal. We can't bind them with our words and now it's actually sad for us that we are at the end of this golden life. The actual truth is- rather than the time spent in class, the time spent in rock garden, canteen, quadrangle would be more. The bonding between the people here, irrespective of department, juniors, seniors can only be found in UVCE. I'm proud to be a part of this great institution! Thank you UVCE! - Tejashwini N A, 8th Sem ISE Feels like it was just yesterday, standing by minchu, looking up towards the sky mesmerized by the view. All around me were places I'd soon be spending the next four years of my life in; labs with sentiment moody CROs , classrooms accommodating friendly rodents, restrooms hosting hostile pigeons and libraries full of books printed in ridiculously small font. UVCE or home as I'd like to address it also stood testament to my several firsts. My first experience with food poisoning, first heart break, first 35 and my first 30 too all in that order. As I relive those wonderful moments, several memories flood in, from the time we pulled of the wild jackfruit heist armed only with our courageous heart and blunt hacksaw blades to the incident that elevated the status of “gulabi aankhen " from a song to a crimson inducing emotional ride. Several months have passed, the "dudes" and "bros" have been replaced with endearing profanities I dare not document, strangers turned friends, friends turned family and someone became somebody that I just used to know. Feelings of pride, ego and disdain got replaced with humility, acceptance and empathy . Responsibilities groomed us and our shortcomings taught us. Reminiscing back, these past four years inadvertently changed all of us UVCEians for the better while not changing itself much at all. The campus remains as fresh as ever, the memories still alive, classes remain unattended and that really old dog continues to stay alive managing not to die. The 2017 batch of UVCE bids her goodbye, knowing all too well that the four best years of our lives so far is coming to an end . Here's to a hundred years of awesomeness! - Vishal K Bhatta, 8th Sem ECE UVCE. The college which redefined my life! People say old is gold, being the oldest engineering college in Karnataka, it made me feel that I’m graduating from the best engineering college of Karnataka. The entire lifetime is too short to recollect the memories of these four years, I wonder! Is there anything left to be taught by this college? Every journey will have a final destination where you need to get down. And its time to depart from UVCE . Always an UVCEian! -Sandeep, 8th Sem Civil “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today”. In one sentence, I have entered the college as an empty container and now I am going as a dully filled container. UVCE has given me more than what I expected. Architect is one who designs beautiful buildings, in the same ways faculties have designed beautiful architects in five years. I got a platform where I can learn, share lot of things. I extend my sincere thanks on behalf of all my friends to the HOD, all the faculties and the entire department for their continuous support for entire four years of our wonderful journey to come up with beautiful colors .Thank you one and all. -Veeresh M. S, Final Year Architecture

A NEW CHAPTER OF IEEE UVCE Team SAMPADA: Congrats on being Chairperson of IEEE UVCE for the 2017-18 year. How are you feeling about it? Shaina: Thank you Team Sampada. I had the aim of being the chairperson of IEEE UVCE right from my first year. When I was taken into the executive committee of IEEE UVCE in my second and third year, the same desire grew stronger. In these two years I executed all the tasks and responsibilities assigned to me wholeheartedly and to my fullest potential with the guidance of my seniors and I believe that it is the consistent determination within me which made me achieve my aim. I am overjoyed on being the Chairperson of IEEE UVCE and equally excited to lead, guide and work with the new team. Team SAMPADA: Tell us about your plans for the next one year as Chairperson of IEEE UVCE. What can the current students expect of IEEE in the next year? Shaina: I am a planner, a scheduled person. I have already set the blueprints for the next year and discussed them with the Vice-Chairpersons. In the upcoming academic year along with KAGADA-The National Level Paper presentation contest and IMPETUS -The annual Technical fest, both of which are organized by IEEE UVCE, the students can expect more of technical workshops, talks and contests concerning all the streams of engineering in UVCE. I also aim to conduct exciting and informative events. And with all these, I aspire to keep up the respectability of IEEE UVCE that it has gained over the years. Team SAMPADA: What is the major change that you would want to bring across in the next one year? Shaina: In the next one year I would like to bring about a change in the way the students of the college perceive IEEE UVCE. I want them to see IEEE UVCE as a student branch which models their engineering life by providing a platform for gaining and improving their skills together with personal growth. Team SAMPADA: What are your expectations from the students? Shaina: It is impossible for Team IEEE UVCE to execute the plans if there is lack of cooperation from the students. I want the students to enthusiastically get involved in all the events that would be conducted. I expect support and participation from students of all the branches. Also, the team would be really happy to receive suggestions from the students as it would help in the progress of IEEE UVCE. Team SAMPADA: Why should students join IEEE UVCE? Shaina: IEEE UVCE is a student branch of good repute. Over the years, IEEE UVCE has been playing a major role in helping the students to blossom into independent and successful engineers. As I already mentioned earlier, IEEE UVCE serves as a platform for the students to sharpen their skills and importantly gives the students a wide range of exposure! All the more reason why students should join IEEE UVCE. Our Hearty Congratulations to Shaina Rochelle Noronha on becoming the Chairperson of IEEE UVCE Student Branch. We wish her and her new Execom team a ALL THE BEST to take UVCE to greater Heights! - Team Sampada

It does not matter if you are the fan of sport or not, there are great lessons in the game of life that can be learned with football. May it be the limitless hour of workouts and fitness, and forgetting give up to pick up our own teammates and encouraging them on the field as to how to handle the pressure of a crucial matchmaking penalty. To me it is a display of our character. Every year Esportivo gives sight to some magnificent moments. This year wasn't any different. I was extremely fortunate to have played with the most senior and experienced players in our team who are more than enthusiastic to share and inspire us with their outlook, judgement, motivation and encourage us whenever needed. Our home team consisted of 28 zealous players split into two equally spirited ( A and B ) teams. As the day started, with the help of organisers the tournament kicked off as planned. I was charmed to play under the leadership of Sunil Mudaliar in team A. We started off and headed into the semi-finals with a very close encounter with the mighty DBIT in quarter finals. Next we faced our own college team-B in the semi finals. They had battled their way as well. To play against them was quite bizarre, but we had to do it. We were leading 1-0 against them in the first half. In the second half things took a dramatic turn over and their score was equal to ours. The match went ahead with penalties. The intensity and the pressure kept on building every second. As it turned out, team-B were Victorious. It was an offbeat result, but we were taken aback by the level of intensity and dedication they showed in the field. We may have lost the match, but we absorbed the loss with the same dignity as our previous victories. The team-B went to finals to face CMRIT . They gave a good fight but only to come out as the second best. We were fascinated to see how far they had come. We were proud and jubilant for them to be able to lift the silverware for our college team. They earned a massive amount of respect in everyone's heart. A team which showed the importance of teamwork and high spirited game in the every second of the game. In football you are playing against your own highest standards and when you reach your limits, the joy is unexplainable. Hope to see many more Esportivos of the same magnitude in the years to come. - Manish, 4th Sem Mech ESPORTIVO ‘17

UVCE’s pride resides in it’s vast spread alumni chain. There’s an emotional bonding that exists between UVCE and its Alumni. Here is an interview of Mr N L K PRASAD from batch of Electrical (1962-1967). There’s an historical relation added with this batch. Team Vision UVCE brings this interview to you. Keep reading! Many interesting facts await you! Team Sampada: How was your college life? How was the course during that time? Prasad Sir: After I graduated from National College I joined UVCE. People came from different parts of India but we used to get along well. We couldn't speak much as we were mostly busy. When it comes to course it was a five years long and was an integrated one. In the first three years we never used to study. We had common subjects which mainly consisted of civil subjects. In 4th and 5th year we had to choose subjects and that is the only time we studied seriously. I had taken up engineering mechanics. I would like to recall about a chain survey (civil subject) in third year. And for this there was a need to visit Ghati subhramanya. During those times, it was a poorly developed village and there weren't any washrooms, so we had to manage for nearly ten days. Team Sampada : Were there any educational tours ? Prasad Sir: There was one such tour organised when we were in 4th year. We had been to Sharavathi and our main aim was to study generators. We keenly observed Kaplan generator and studied about its working. In the evenings we used to play cricket. There is 700 feet waterfall near the Sharavathi river. All the friends would team up and walk to the foot of the falls and bathe there. Each water drop would hit us like bullets due to its potential energy. We would go there in spite of the slippery rocks, it was risky but adventurous. I recall a funny incident which happened during final year. I had a friend who was a bodybuilder, his name was Anand Rao. He could speak very fluent Kannada and was a sportive guy. Once we all challenged him to climb down those 700 steps and do 3 push-ups. He asked us for 10 Masala Dosas if he won. The task was quite challenging and we were taken aback when he completed the task and did 15 push-ups instead of just 3 push-ups! I'm in touch with very few of them and Anand is one among them, he is currently my neighbour. He has his own business where he deals with transformer oils. From the college days he had a great personality and he ended up in a good place. Team Sampada : Did you have projects in the final year? Prasad Sir : We had electives instead of projects in UVCE. As a matter of fact, electives were introduced first in UVCE among all the other colleges. There were 4 common subjects and two were based on our choice. We had to sincerely do the lab experiments in order to get decent marks in exams. Even in those days rheostats were used as load. Back then electricity boards (KEB board) had a great demand, since I didnt get any opportunity to work there I had to pursue post graduation in National College. After working in several small scale industries I joined GEF (Government Electrical Factory) where I got to learn so much in practical. Team Sampada : Which are those places in and around our college that you preferred to hang out ? Prasad Sir : We used to visit Vidhana Soudha, it was in-fact a mega structure!! We were also regular customers for a small canteen which was functioning inside Cubbon park for a refreshing cup of tea. I was very limited, in the sense I just used to travel a short distance between my home at Malleshwaram and our college at K R Circle on my cycle. Adding to this Central College campus was a cool place to spend some time with friends and never to forget GAAS college ground! ALUMNI SPEAKS

A wide barren land spread till court complex where I still remember playing cricket with students from GAAS college. As a matter of fact there was a hostel situated, that which belonged to our engineering college. This factor made students a bit oriented towards sports. Film theatre were our centre of attraction. We also visited Maharani’s College occasionally . Team Sampada : Professors from those days were said to be pretty conservative, how was it in UVCE? Prasad Sir : We used to mingle with them easily! But there was some space maintained. Then a system known as “Class marks” existed which was provided by our professors, that was a small factor which we feared about. Teaching was undoubtedly exceptional!! But it would take us time to gain that threshold with our professors, then comes educational tour which had eliminated the small gaps that existed between us. We normally approached them to clear our doubts and they responded to us all the time. Nevertheless they had that latent energy in their gesture which imparted us a good nature. I suppose Prof Venky was our HOD. Veerabhadrappa is another professor who I remember the most. He was a punctual, disciplined person who himself maintained discipline and expected the same from his students too. He even wore pressed coat and tie, entered our class on time and would fill the board regarding the topic he taught!! We hardly saw an empty space on our board. On a lighter note, he was allergic to noise! His notes were too systematic and would cover the subject till its depth. Prof Byrappa is another name that passes through my mind. He wasn’t as strict as Prof Veerabhadrappa, but enthusiastic and encouraged us in playing “Volleyball”. It was a difficult task to gain marks those days. It did depend a bit on the tempo of students with professors. Students were mischievous even then, we used to bunk classes, call false attendance and what not! But we never crossed our limits. “Another interesting yet historical fact I would like to share. Mrs Uma of our class (1967) was the 1st women in our country to graduate with Electrical degree”. She was our special classmate, she had no other choice except to sit in 1st bench. Professors treated her as one of the kind and we had deeper respects for her. Team Sampada : UVCE’s campus is said to be unaltered, what was the condition of campus then? Are you still in contact with your classmates? Prasad Sir : Ha! Ha! I walked around our campus now and to my excitement its very much the same! Except for the new Electrical department, Open air theatre and Maths department. We had just 3 departments then Civil, Mechanical and Electrical. Fun factor is that “Canteen” still remains the same. Our principal then was Prof Venugopal, he was a bit strict but honorable man. Regarding my classmates, many of them are in foreign countries. I would remember Mallesh, rank holder of my class, who then stayed near my place and cleared all my doubts, I’m hoping to meet him soon. Team Sampada : If you were asked what UVCE is to you, what would you tell? Prasad Sir : Undoubtedly, what I’m today is all because of UVCE. UVCE has changed my life drastically.
