WE WATCH OVER OUR OWN

From the Founder

Fellow Patriots:

My crew, our families and I are honored and humbled to welcome everyone to the 30th annual Salute to American Veterans Rally and the 35th annual POW / MIA Recognition Ride! We will again be calling the city of Woodland Park “Rally Headquarters” and are excited about this year’s many events and features. Friday’s activities will be greatly expanded and attendees will see a much larger vendor show, more bands and more ways to have fun and honor our American Heroes. We will be dedicating a brand new, permanent memorial to all United States Veterans from all conflicts in Memorial Park at the main rally site. The memorial will be dedicated during the 35th Remembrance ceremony on Saturday, August 20 at 12:30 and we hope you can join us. We are also extremely proud to once again be presenting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Traveling WALL during the Rally! The WALL, along with the awesome “Cost of Freedom” display will be set up at the Woodland Park Middle School from Thursday morning through Sunday afternoon. As always, admission to the wall is FREE thanks to our generous sponsors.

Jim Wear, Founder and Organizer

Unfortunately, sponsorship only covers a portion of the expenses for the WALL and the new Veterans Memorial. As we receive no direct funding from the City of Woodland Park, we will be handling our own fundraising efforts during the Rally. If you would like to support our efforts to cover the costs of the WALL and the Memorial, please bid on any of the 3 great items during the silent auction, buy some “Red Friday” t-shirts for your friends, go on the POW/ MIA Recognition Ride and / or attend the ceremony in Memorial Park at 12:30 and put a few dollars in the hat when it gets passed around. Beyond that, ALL American Patriots, Veterans and enthusiasts can attend this event without spending a dime, and we welcome everyone who joins us. Woodland Park is a great community of people who love their Country, love our Veterans and welcome all of us in with open arms. On behalf of our entire staff and crew of volunteers, we thank you for your support, and want to express the love and respect that we hold in our hearts for those honored by your efforts: our American Veterans, active duty Military, POWs, MIAs and especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms and cannot be with us to celebrate during this glorious weekend in Woodland Park. Finally, THANK YOU to all of you great Americans who make the trip up the pass to be a part of the Veterans Rally weekend. Your participation strengthens our alliance and ensures our future. Sincerely, Jim Wear, Founder and Organizer

parking at the rally One of our most frequently asked questions is “WHERE DO WE PARK?”. As the Rally site in Woodland Park is a bit more condensed than what folks have experienced at this Rally in other towns, parking is understandably not as expansive.

The entire area around Memorial Park is reserved for motorcycle parking. We typically have enough space to accommodate almost everyone on bikes. Attendees who come in larger Slingshots, V-8 Trikes, bikes with trailers, cars, trucks, RVs and the like are encouraged to park at the Woodland Park High School just a few blocks east of the Rally (See map on page 25 of this program). We will be running a FREE SHUTTLE SERVICE all day Saturday from the Woodland Park High School to the Rally site and

The shuttle will take our handicapped Veterans and attendees right down to the WALL to minimize walking. There is also plenty of car and bike parking near the WALL at the Middle School. For those that park motorcycles at the Woodland Park high school, we will have security personnel on site to protect your machines. As always, please don’t drink and ride. As a retired Special Forces Sergeant Major and Veteran of multiple combat tours I hold honor for our troops close to my heart. I started by attending the rally many years ago and I progressed through the years by increasing my involvement in the motorcycle and veterans community. This led to becoming involved assisting in the planning and running of the “Salute to American Veterans Rally”. I have been honored and blessed to be brought in as the Co-Chairman of the Rally Committee, alongside Mr. Stu Sacks. I have already developed great relationships with some of the leaders and citizens of the great city of Woodland Park and I look forward to developing many more. I will serve as a liaison to the active duty community in the greater Colorado Springs community to build and maintain bonds between this great community and our troops, so our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines see just how much they are valued by our citizens and so our citizens can build those relationships with our troops one on one. De Opresso Liber. DAN WILLIAMS, County Commissioner Post 1980 American Legion Commander VFW post 6051 member

I am honored to help welcome each and every one of you to this year’s Veteran’s Rally in Teller County and beautiful Woodland Park. Our Veterans and their families and all who support them, continue to inspire us through their example, leadership, and honor. Teller County is home to a population of over 20 percent Veterans who care about each other and the communities they live in. To those traveling here, especially our Veterans, you are all welcome and held in the highest esteem. Your experience as part of the Rally and the related events will stay with you for a lifetime and it will be great to walk with heroes once again. Thank to Jim Wear and Pro Promotions along with the leadership of Woodland Park and Teller County for making the 2022 event the best one ever.

On behalf of the residents of Woodland Park, the City is honored to host the Salute to American Veteran’s Rally for the second year in a row. As a community where 1 in every 8 residents is a current or former service member, Woodland Park finds much of its identity in the experiences and sacrifices of our cherished veterans. We hope those attending the Rally take a few moments to reflect at the many war memorials in Lion’s Park and at the Eric V. Dickson and new POW-MIA monuments in Memorial Park. It is a privilege to welcome you to our scenic City Above the Clouds. JASON MIKESELL, Teller County Sherriff

As Sheriff of Teller County, I’m exceptionally proud to head an agency that is so supportive of our veteran community. Veterans make up a large percentage of the population in our county, and their contributions have been and continue to be vital in keeping Teller the free and brave place that it is today. I’m pleased to be able to honor all of America’s veterans and recognize all their sacrifices, their bravery, and their dedication to our county. I join the rest of our residents in welcoming the Veterans’ Rally to Teller County.

sentiments from the past Colonel Ron Fitch Garrison Commander 4th Infantry Division - US Army

The Salute to American Veterans is THE most impressive rally that I have ridden in, to include Rolling Thunder. Although Rolling Thunder is much larger, this event had a more personal touch when it comes to honoring our Veterans, their service and their impact on our Nation. The venue here in Colorado is second to none from the actual scenic ride in the Colorado mountains to the fantastic support from the town of Cripple Creek and the professional planning and execution of the event by the Pro Promotions staff. It was an absolute honor for my Command Sergeant Major and I to ride and participate in this event.

Colonel Timothy “Boomer” Ferguson, Vice Commander, 10th Air Base Wing, USAFA

It was an honor and pleasure to ride in the rally from Woodland Park to Cripple Creek and then attend the ceremony honoring Veterans at Memorial Park. This was a first class event all the way around. I have been to many of these over my 25+ years of service and can honestly say this is the most well organized and run Veteran’s event I have ever attended. I was amazed with the number of people who came up to thank me for my service as we proceeded through the day’s events. While we do not do this for the thanks, it is nice to be reminded there are patriotic Americans all over this country who appreciate the service and sacrifice all members of the United States military give for love of country.

William J. Liquori, Jr., Col, USAF Commander, 50th Space Wing

This was my first year participating in the Salute to Veterans Rally, but it will definitely not be my last. This was by far one of the most impressive veterans events I have seen in 45 years. Words can’t begin to describe the quality of the event, the level of respect paid to our veterans (past and present), and the welcoming atmosphere set by Teller County, the City of Cripple Creek, and the team at Pro Promotions. Every Vet, family member, or friend in attendance could not only see, but feel that their sacrifices were very much appreciated. For some, this may have been the first time they felt that sense of pride and appreciation since returning home or leaving the service. Regardless of their past situations, every one of them felt a part of a large, welcoming family that weekend. As a 3rd generation veteran, my emotions got to me several times during the day as I thought about the service and sacrifices of my uncles, brother, father, and grandfather. All of them were with me in spirit that day--from across the US or from a peaceful resting place. On behalf of all of them thank you for such a great event!

Thomas J. Parsley 4ID DIVARTY, Command Sergeant Major

As far as the rally goes I would start with Wow!! Sometimes as a Soldier of 27 years I tend to forget that there are so many Veterans in our community, and although a lot of people say nice things and proclaim their support to our veterans sometimes it just seems like lip service. I do not believe in my 27 years I have ever felt the pride and appreciation America has for its veterans until I attended the

2022 SA LUTE TO A M ER I C A N V ET ER A N S R A L LY & F E STI VA L

2016 Salute to American Veterans Rally. It was one of my favorite experiences here in Colorado and the appreciation was sincere I believe our Veterans were given as much respect and admiration as I have ever seen. It was a tremendous honor to attend the First class event and I will encourage as many Veterans as I can to attend. I received a shot in the arm which renewed my commitment and pride of service to our Country to defend the liberties of the wonderful people of Colorado if for nobody else! Thanks again for the opportunity and God Bless you!, Your community and the United States of America!

Colonel Michael C Kasales, 3rd Brigade Combat Team

The Salute to American Veterans Rally was a first-class tribute to Veterans, past and present, and their Families. With over 23 years of military service, I have participated in several similar type events across the country, and I can state emphatically that this event has provided me the most memorable experience out of them all. It was a true honor and my privilege to represent the Soldiers of Fort Carson and the 4th Infantry Division. This weekend brought together current and former Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines (and their Families and friends) to celebrate their service to our Nation. With the thousands of bikers, motorcycle enthusiasts, and a few “cagers” that descended on Cripple Creek, it was apparent that the camaraderie, respect, and sense of pride continues to exists between our Nations warriors and the patriotic citizens who support them. I can think of no better event that pays tribute to the citizens from every generation who courageously and with honor stood watch for the Nation. I can’t wait for next year!!

Captain Rod Knutson USN POW 10/17/1965 to 2/12/197

Throughout my 37 year career in the military and since, I have had many opportunities to witness or participate in some fantastic events including one at the White House. I was honored with the chance to participate in the 2008 Salute to American Veterans Rally in Colorado. Talk about a heart warming, fantastic, and memorable experience!!!! WOW!!! Veterans have a special place in my heart. All veterans, no matter what their job or where they were stationed are truly important and deserve to be recognized and your Rally and the Rally Committee team did that with superb style. I was extremely PROUD to have been able to attend, let alone being asked to be one of the speakers at the ceremony and participate in the POW/MIA Ride. It was truly a great experience and it made a tremendous impression on both me and my wife. We enjoyed every aspect of the event. The bad weather actually added something special to the event because it helped all who were there appreciate the fact that our troops have to endure no matter what the weather is. I want to extend my personal thanks to you and Pam for the absolutely wonderful job you do at orchestrating this event and to all your sponsors and helpers who work so hard to make it happen. It is a great tribute to Veterans and much deserved. Far too many Veterans receive far too little recognition for their sacrifice and dedication. I am proud of you for your sincere devotion to this Rally. Patrick L. Fetterman COL, IN Chief of Staff, Fort Carson, CO

I have participated in rides, rallies, patriotic displays and all manner of events where Americans gather to celebrate our freedom. These events have occurred in places as far-flung as Gary, Indiana, Western

Kentucky and Washington DC. I have never seen a single one so well organized and so well orchestrated as the 2010 Cripple Creek Rally. Having worked closely with you in preparation for this event, I put this down to your personal attention and commitment, and extend the thanks of a grateful old soldier to you for what you accomplished.

Joseph L. Galloway co-author: “We Were Soldiers Once...and Young” and nationally syndicated military columnist

The Salute to American Veterans Rally is a veritable explosion of good old-fashioned patriotism. The Rally attendees welcomed every veteran of every war with equal enthusiasm and support. If you aren’t proud to be an American when you arrive, you will be when you leave. Thanks to everyone for the wonderful hospitality, a great program and for giving me a few thousand new friends!”

Colonel (R) Bob McLaughlin

We were awe struck by the entire event. We left inspired and proud to be part of it. Remember, my 80 year old dad, a Korean war era vet said that he could “die a happy man” after experiencing the rally. He also said “this wasn’t on my bucket list, but I just added it and checked the block for a once in a life time thrill as a veteran”. He was so proud that people were thanking him for his service as he dawned his Korea veterans cap purchased at the Rally. I quote “I can’t believe that an Active duty Marine Colonel in full dress blues with all those ribbons would thank me, an simple Airman, for my service. This place, these people are incredible – I can die a happy man”

Tom Kirk, EX-POW, Colonel, USAF(Ret)

The Salute to American Veterans Rally is like a breath of fresh air. Here in the beautiful and spectacular mountains of Colorado, we find a group of simple American citizens coming together to honor those who have served our country to defend and preserve our freedoms. It is a time of comradeship and celebration to express patriotism and appreciation for all veterans. They honor the flag and embody the spirit of one nation united and proud. God bless them and our great country. Freedom is not free, and it is coming together for events such as this one, that re-news faith in and love for our country - and pays tribute to the men and women who have served.

Bud Breckner, EX-POW Major General, USAF, Retired

As a career Air Force fighter pilot, Major General and former POW, I have had 5/2/33 – 2/16/08 the privilege of participating often in this event, and speaking at both the banquet and the gazebo in the town’s center. What has impressed me most about this event is the number of veterans that attend from all over the country. I would not have known how many there were except that they recognized me from the stage and introduced themselves to me as I walked the streets afterward. This is truly a fantastic event wherein veterans from all eras can come together to honor our current active duty heroes in uniform, and lend their support to our country. I look forward to seeing you again this year for Colorado’s greatest testimony of patriotic support for our service men and women.

I look forward to seeing you again this year for Colorado’s greatest testimony of patriotic support for our service men and women.

veterans rally & wall sponsor: Tom Meiter of Law Tigers Tom put himself through college by working as a heavy equipment operator, brick layer, and packing plant worker. “I’d come home from college and go out to the packing plant at 4:00 am with my hard hat and wait on the bench outside the superintendent’s office. The superintendent would tell me there was no work available, but I’d just sit and wait. Pretty soon a foreman would come by the office to report that someone got hurt on the job. The superintendent would come out of his office a few minutes later and tell me there was an “opening” and I’d go to work. After being confined on the kill floor all day, there is nothing like jumping on your cycle and throttling up. The wind, the sun, and the freedom made me glad to be alive. It still does.” The day after Metier graduated from college he put every possession he had on the back of his Triumph Trident and took off. Tom Metier of the Metier Law Firm AKA “Law Tigers” has been one of the Salute to American Veterans Rally’s longest standing and staunchest supporters. The Law Tigers team has been instrumental in keeping the Rally alive thru good times and bad, and have made provisions for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Traveling WALL to be part of the Rally since 2007. 2021 was the first year in over a decade that the WALL was not part of the Rally, due to the loss of host city sponsorship dollars. In 2022, Tom Metier once again insured that the WALL would be included for all Veterans and Citizens to experience. Riding motorcycles long before he went to law school, Metier grew up in the farm country of Iowa, where motorcycles were like corn – they were everywhere. Metier was riding mini-bikes in the fields by age 10, progressing to rebuilt dirtbikes, a Honda 350, a Triumph Trident 750, a Kawasaki 900, Sportsters, and he now rides a 2007 Harley Road King Custom. “We’d mow lawns, deliver newspapers, walk beans, bale hay, anything we could to get enough money to buy bikes and keep them running. Nothing like a slingshot and a mini-bike for the get-away.”

“I was riding and working my way across the country. My food budget was $1.29 per day – the price of a McDonald’s hamburger, fries and a Coke. Sleeping on the ground, playing pool for spending money, stopping to work when I needed to. Twelve-hour days on a Trident – even after I got in my sleeping bag it seemed like it took a couple hours to quit vibrating. I was having the time of my life. Probably my longest single day ride was from Buffalo, Wyoming, across South Dakota to Spencer, Iowa. I got a lot of miles in, but then on a cold day in October I was riding down the highway near Morrison, Illinois when a car at a stop sign pulled across the lane right in front of me. I had no time to lay it down. I hit the car between the front and back passenger doors. Because it was a cold day I was wearing a helmet. My head hit the door post between the front and back passenger windows and the helmet cracked. I walked away from it. It just wasn’t my time to go. But I became committed then and there to go after drivers who don’t look for motorcycles. The next year I went to law school.”

Metier has practiced law in Colorado and Wyoming since 1981, with a special focus on brain, spine and other serious injuries. His trial work has brought him national recognition and other lawyers have named him a Colorado Super Lawyer and to the Best Lawyers in America. “We represent folks injured in all kinds of accidents, but I have always had a special place in my heart for motorcycle riders. I’ve represented a lot of them. We all know that the lawyer who rides can better understand and represent riders. I’ve been there. Our goal is to support riders and the riding community”. Beyond helping bikers with their legal issues, Metier supports countless motorcycling events, charities and causes which support the motorcycling community. “It is important to me that the whole motorcycling community stays healthy. Law Tigers is a resource to help the riding community, whether that means assisting with poker runs or rallies, giving families of injured riders the help and information they need or working to keep our freedom to ride secure. The motorcycle community is made up of great and wonderful people who deserve the best.” Metier added, “A huge segment of our riding community are US Military Veterans, and it’s no wonder because the motorcycle represents freedom and Veterans relish their freedom above all else. I have so much respect and admiration for our Vets, after all, it’s only because of their dedication and sacrifices that the rest of us are able to live free in the greatest Country in the world. We proudly join the Salute to American Veterans Rally organizers in honoring the valiant men and women who served our country and welcome the Vietnam Memorial Traveling WALL as a reminder of those who gave their lives for our freedom. We owe our Veterans everything!” Thanks Tom. We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

The new memorial will be similar to the one which was installed in city Park in Cripple Creek back in 1999. A simple brick structure, measuring 10 feet wide by 7 feet tall, with a center stone engraved with the POW/MIA insignia designed by Colorado Springs resident Newt Heisley in the early 1970s. The POW/MIA logo and flag are one of the most most recognizable in the United States, second only to the Stars and Stripes. “There will be some differences between the Woodland Park Memorial and the one in Cripple Creek.” Said Ray McPeek, Veterans Rally Committee Chairman. “We will use black brick, which will complement the Eric V. Dickson Memorial. The center stone will be black granite and the POW/MIA logo will commemorate 35 years of the POW/MIA Recognition Ride, which has staged in Woodland Park for more than 25 years.” The new Memorial will sit just northwest of the Eric V. Dickson statue, on the east side of Memorial Park. Like the Cripple Creek Memorial, the new structure in Woodland Park is designed to be embellished on an ongoing basis. “We will be adding bronze plaques, commemorating various groups and individuals each year at the Rally,” explained McPeek. “The first two plaques

to be added will be in memory of Pearl Harbor survivor Lieutenant James Downing, and Monica Harvey who dedicated her life to helping Veterans heal their invisible wounds. “ The Downing plaque was unveiled at the 2021 Rally in Woodland Park, and the Harvey plaque will be dedicated at this year’s Rally.

The process to get this memorial built has been tedious and a bit confusing at times. The Rally Committee first approached Woodland City Council about the project in October 2021, just after the Veterans Rally concluded. “We were in front of council a total of three times prior to getting approval to move forward,” said Jim Wear, founder of the Rally. “Finally, in March, we were able to start the process. Material shortages, labor shortages and a lack of funding made the next few months extremely challenging.” Wear continued, “Navigating the permitting process was difficult and time consuming and we unfortunately spent some time and money in that area that we didn’t need to, but the good news is that we are back on a solid timeline and the memorial will be completed prior to this year’s Rally.”

process, but also with the excavation and concrete work needed to secure the Memorial. “We are honored to be a part of this project,” said Casey Loftus, who co-owns the company with her husband Troy. Don Hall of Don Hall Masonry in Canon City committed to do the brickwork and Rocky Mountain Memorials in Colorado Springs is engraving the center stone. “We are fortunate to have some skilled patriots who are dedicated to completing the memorial,” said McPeek. “These contractors are short staffed and booked up... but they are making space and time for this important project.” McPeek added, “It’s truly a group effort and we thank everyone involved, including the City of Woodland Park and the various department heads who have thrown their support behind the project.

Hardcastle Heating and Air came to the table with a $1,500.00 donation toward the effort. Local contractor Peak DirtWorks stepped up in a big way to not only assist with the permitting

The new “all Veterans – all conflicts” memorial will be dedicated at the 35th annual Remembrance Ceremony in Memorial Park at 12:30 Saturday, August 20. The Rally Committee encourages all Rally attendees and Teller County citizens to attend.

Thank you for your support of our Veterans, Prisoners of War, Missing in Action, and those brave Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom! The late Newt Heisley, creator of the POW/MIA flag.

VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL TRAVELING WALL & COST OF FREEDOM DISPLAY

Vietnam Memorial Traveling Wall Returns for 30th Anniversary Rally The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC holds more than 58,000 names engraved in black granite and is a stark reminder of the price of war and the cost of freedom. The “Traveling WALL” is an 80% scale replica of that memorial and brings the power of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to towns and cities across the nation, providing the experience to those who may not ever get the chance to visit the Memorial in DC. From 2010 through 2019, the “Traveling WALL” appeared in Teller County as part of the Salute to American Veterans Rally. Tens of thousands of visitors made their way to the WALL annually during the Rally.

The WALL is obviously sacred to Veterans, but just as important is the educational opportunity that it provides to citizens, and especially students and the young who might not be taught the details in school. When the Veterans Rally relocated to Woodland Park in 2021, organizers were unable to secure the Traveling WALL for the event. “Bringing in the Traveling Wall is a $13,000 expense. “Explained event organizer Pam Wear. “We lobbied City Council hard for some assistance in bringing in the wall, but it was to no avail.” Traditionally, the city of Cripple Creek would pay for half the expense and event organizers would raise the rest through donations and sponsorship. “The Traveling WALL is an extremely important piece of what we do in honoring our Veterans and educating the public.” Said Wear. “It was a real disappointment to not have it at last year’s event.” In early June, Woodland Park resident Linda Martin called the Veterans Rally organizers to inquire if the Vietnam Memorial WALL would be appearing at the 2022 Rally. “I was disappointed to find

that the Traveling WALL would not be here,” said Martin. “I had previously been present at council meetings where Jim and Pam had tried to secure some partial funding from the city, but the response reminded me of deer in the headlights.” Martin then asked the organizers what it would take to secure the Traveling WALL, and then generously offered to pony up the non-refundable $5,000 deposit to bring this important feature to Woodland Park and the 2022 Veterans Rally. “If my city leadership is not willing to step up, I am. There is little or nothing more important to me than patriotism and support for our veterans, and this is a small way that I can be a part of making a difference.” Woodland Park School District leadership immediately offered up the Middle School ballfield as a venue, which makes an ideal location with a stunning view of Pikes Peak as a backdrop for the WALL Memorial. Even with Martin’s generosity and the School District’s offer, Rally organizers still needed to raise $6,500 plus food and lodging for the driver of the “American Veterans Traveling Tribute”, the parent company of the Traveling WALL. Lights, generators, sandbags, port-o-lets, trash service and shuttle busses are all additional requirements and the entire effort costs upward of $15,000.00. “As soon as the word got about Ms. Martin’s gesture, we had several local businesses, groups and individuals step up in support,” said Wear. “Law Tigers, the American Legion Riders from Post 38, Anderson Enterprises, Benchmark Mortgage, the War Dog Memorial and the Pikes Peak Veterans Council all generously donated. Then, our friends at the Double Eagle Casino also ponied up the room and meals for the driver.” Wear added, “We were overwhelmed with the show of support!”

Wear’s husband Jim, co-founder of the Veterans Rally had this to say: “It is against all of Pam’s and my better judgment to be having Veterans help pay for this. It’s supposed to be in their honor, not at their expense. We will humbly accept the contributions committed by the Pikes Peak Veterans Council, the American Legion, the War Dog Memorial and other Veterans groups, but it’s not at all what we had in mind.” Jim added, “We hope that City and County leadership will come and see what an awesome display of history and patriotism the WALL provides, how much tourism traffic is created and then perhaps reconsider some financial support in the future.” The traveling WALL will be accompanied by the “Cost of Freedom Display” which includes tributes to Veterans of Afghanistan, Iraq, WWI, WWII, Korea, Cold War, Beirut, Panama, Desert Storm and many more, including a 9/11 victims memorial. At the time of publication of this article, event organizers were still accepting donations and sponsorships as they were still short of covering all the expenses for the Traveling WALL. Anyone interested in supporting the effort can contact the organizers of the Veterans Rally at 719-487-8005. Sponsors will receive recognition for their contributions.

Combat Hero Bike Build returns with new machines for Two Wounded Veterans and caused partial vision in the left eye and hearing loss.

American military veterans helping their fellow veterans is a tradition in our great Nation. It is one of the strongest and most important in our history.

It took Corporal Adams almost a full two years to bounce back from his injuries. The thought of having to sell his Harley was a heavy weight. He loved riding it but was unable to get back in the saddle. He sold the machine to a buddy that was like a brother to him. He has ridden it ever since.

The “Combat Hero Bike Build” is rooted in the tradition of Vets helping Vets. Founded by several dedicated members of the annual “Run for the Wall”, the Combat Hero Bike Build quickly grew into its own separate nonprofit entity, dedicated to getting critically wounded combat Veterans back out on motorcycles built especially for them.

2022 Veterans Rally attendees are invited to witness the presentation of two very cool and very different custom machines to US Marine Corporal Sean Adams and Sergeant Kristie Ennis. The Rally Committee and the crew at the Combat Hero Bike Build welcome these two heroes to Woodland Park with great anticipation as we prepare to award them brand new, custom fitted motorcycles which will get them back in the wind where they belong. The presentation will take place as part of the 35th Annual Remembrance Ceremony in Memorial Park on Saturday, August 20th at 12:30pm.

For many returning combat vets, reintegrating into civilian society can be difficult. Feeling “normal” is something that many veterans struggle to achieve. When physical disabilities are part of the equation, the difficulties are multiplied exponentially.

For the sixth year running, the Combat Hero Bike build team will return to the Salute to American Veterans Rally in 2022 to get TWO combat wounded Veterans who thought they would never ride again back in the wind. John Barker, President of Combat Hero Bike Build said, “The folks in Teller County have really treated us well. The Veterans Rally has given us the vision to do a bike presentation every year and we are making it happen again in 2022.” Barker added, “We have collected more

The work we are doing here is important, and any assistance we can give to these veterans to once again feel “normal” is one of the greatest gifts that we can provide. We are humbled and honored to be able to do so.”

Sergeant Kirstie Marie Ennis joined the Marine Corps at 17 years old, and was trained as an airframes mechanic and aerial door gunner (.50 cal). She deployed to Afghanistan in 2011. While performing combat operations in the Southern Helmand Province outside of FOB NowZad, the helicopter in which she was manning the .50 cal crashed on June 23, 2012. As a result of the crash, Sergeant Ennis sustained a left leg above the knee amputation. Prior to her injuries, she rode both Harleys and dirt bikes.

Corporal Sean Douglas Adams also joined the Corps after high school and deployed to Afghanistan in 2012, attached to 1st Battalion 8th Marines weapons company. He rode motorcycles all his life until February 10, 2012. Sean’s squad was on patrol and came to an area known to be laid with IEDs in Helmand province, Kajaki, Afghanistan. He spotted the location of one IED but it was actually the secondary charge. The main charge was in front of him and detonated. The blast took both legs, his left thumb, right pinky

“Getting these wounded veterans back on a motorcycle does more good than anyone can imagine.” Said Barker, “The feeling of independence and freedom is something that cannot be measured.

MT. CARMEL VETERANS SERVICE CENTER: A SHINING LIGHT FOR VETERANS, MILITARY, AND THEIR FAMILIES ACROSS SOUTHERN COLORADO In 2014, Jay Cimino, a veteran and prominent businessman envisioned an organization to serve veterans, military, and their families in Colorado Springs. Mr. Cimino recruited retired Army Colonel Bob McLaughlin to oversee the creation of an organization dedicated to providing wraparound services for veterans, military, and their families. When the impact of their selfless service to our nation requires them to seek support, Mt. Carmel makes it easy for them to access critical resources. Mt. Carmel officially opened its doors in 2016. Today, Mt. Carmel offers several direct service programs including Transition & Employment, Health & Wellness, and Military, Veteran, and Family Services which are integrated with over 200 community, private, nonprofit, and governmental agencies located on Mt. Carmel campuses. Mt. Carmel currently has offices in Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Fountain, Trinidad, and Ft. Carson. While many services exist for veterans and active-duty military throughout the community, navigating the system is a significant challenge and hinders access to these resources. Mt. Carmel has developed a unique model of veteran services which ensures our veterans get the assistance they need. Mt. Carmel has become a catalyst in the community by bringing other veteran-serving organizations under one roof. Our dedicated team ensures that every veteran, military service member, family member, first responder, and Gold Star family receives necessary services and support.

John “Jack” Ivan Chaffee was born June 20, 1924. Jack was raised in a farming and railroad community in Nebraska. Jack met his future wife, Darlene, at 10 years old in Dance Class. In July 1942, after graduating high school from Falls City Nebraska, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, was a Sr. Naval Aviator on the U.S.S Wasp and served with the “Iron Angels” during WWII.

This study documented: • Significant increases in veteran job placements • Substantial reductions in unemployment and turnover • Marked expansion in behavioral health counseling, wellness programs, and support • Documented growth in military, veteran, and family resources and support services • Remarkable decline in homelessness, veteran arrests, and incarcerations “We’re extremely proud of the progress our team and community partners are making in the communities that Mt. Carmel serves,” said Bob McLaughlin. In addition to these direct services, delivered seamlessly to over 12,000 unique clients since 2016, Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center brings our community together, strengthening the impact of our combined efforts to solve complex problems for the local military and veteran community.

An independent study conducted by the National Institute for Social Impact showed that our organization is doubling every dollar invested into programs and returning the investment two-fold into the community as two dollars. The metric is called Social Return on Investment, or SROI, and is the measurement of the value of efforts of an organization to alleviate a social, environmental, or community issue.

What has been traditionally recognized as Colorado’s largest motorcycle rally, and the only event of its kind west of the Mississippi made a major move in 2021. The annual Salute to American Veterans Rally is a long-standing tradition and a “homecoming” of sorts for many of us veterans who ride from all over the United States and beyond.

From 1992 through 2006, the rally was held in Cripple Creek, Colorado. Political turmoil between rally organizers and city officials caused the rally to move to Grand County West of Denver for the 2007 through 2009 events. With new leadership being elected in Cripple Creek in 2010, rally organizers were enticed to return to the Rally’s original home where the gathering was held for the next decade. 2010 thru 2019 were some great years for the Veterans event.

Event organizers began to search for a new home after the 2020 Veterans Rally was cancelled at the last hour by city officials over Covid-19 concerns, and hostile takeover attempts of the rally by a group of local citizens came to a head. Ultimately, the Colorado American Legion State Commander stripped the Cripple Creek American Legion Riders from American Legion post 171 of their charter as a result of their attempts to dismantle and gain control of the rally. Early in 2021, several municipalities in Colorado and Kansas showed interest in hosting the rally. Woodland Park, Colorado – host city for the POW/MIA Recognition Ride for more than 25 years - was at the top of the list and eventually won the honor. The Woodland Park community and city leadership treated rally organizers with ultimate respect and have supported the rally at every turn. “We were very late in getting started,” explained Veterans Rally committee chairman Ray McPeek. “It was April 2021 before we could actually start making progress, but once the ball got rolling, city government was very supportive and the department heads in Woodland Park were absolutely awesome to work with”. While having a smaller area of operation, and while the turnout was a little less than in past years, the 2021 Salute to American Veterans Rally was a rousing success by all measures. Held in the beautiful city park named “Memorial Park” for its Veterans memorial, rally attendees had plenty of entertainment including vendors, exhibitors, live music, a great beer garden, good

The Combat Hero Bike Build crew was on hand, awarding combat wounded amputee SGT Cory Collins a customized machine built specifically to get him back in the wind. The weather was perfect and the rally received rave reviews from nearly everyone who attended. “I really like this location better than Cripple Creek” said one attendee. “I’m a Vet and come to the Rally every year. This venue is perfect and we all feel much closer together.” Thousands more chimed in with the same sentiments during and after the rally: “We LOVE Woodland Park!” The 34th annual POW MIA Recognition Ride went off as usual without a hitch, staging in Woodland Park and riding through the mountains to Cripple Creek. “We did ride up to Cripple Creek on the POW / MIA Memorial Highway, but very few riders stayed in town at the end,” said one Veteran rider. “Most of us opted to return to Woodland Park for the ceremony”. There were some concerns over having enough bike parking in Woodland Park, but the local PD and street crews saw to it that plenty of streets were closed off and were reserved for bikes. Woodland Park also offers expanded opportunities for camping, dining and shopping. Continued on page 31

Ryan Chrys & The Rough Cuts bring forth new energy to music fans who love the heroes and outlaws of old. Influenced by the songs and personalities of legends like Waylon and Willie, they drive their sound with blazing guitars and a rock n’ roll attitude. The band pays respect to classic styles, but anyone can tell from their overdriven sound that they’re far from traditionalists. They’re known for their original style of blending old school country and rock n roll and have been praised for their songwriting and nominated in the Ameripolitan Music Awards for “Best Outlaw Group.” They’ve directly supported Dwight Yoakam, Shooter Jennings, Blackberry Smoke, Jason Boland, Justin Moore and more. The Rough Cuts rock the Veterans Rally Beer Garden Saturday at 4pm.

“Mile High” is the premier popular music ensemble of the 4th Infantry Division Band. They perform a wide range of pop, rock, country, and jazz and have performed at festivals, and special events all over the Southern Colorado and Fort Carson area. These active duty Soldier Musicians train along side their counterparts in the 4th Infantry Division while providing musical support to ceremonies, organizational days, dining outs, celebrations as well as an array of Military functions. Catch “Mile High” Saturday at 2pm in Memorial Park.

Sound Advice is based in Teller County and is well known for being one of the best local Rock Bands in the Pikes Peak Region! They deliver a Rock Show to their fans, keeping everyone dancing by performing some of the greatest songs from AC/DC to Zeppelin and everything in between. The Band Members; Jan is truly our shining star on voclas. Bob has been playing guitar since he was 14 and it shows! would like to thank all participants, supporters, patriots and sponsors of the 29th annual Rally and the 34th annual POW / MIA Recognition Ride. We hope to see you all back in Woodland Park this August for our 30th Rally and 35th Recognition Ride anniversary celebrations!

Over $8,000 was raised and donated by rally participants as a result of the Recognition Ride, the annual silent auction and the Red Friday T-shirt program. “We are always happy to return donated funds back to the communities that support us, and this year was no exception,” said McPeek.” The rally is a free event and has never been billed as a fundraiser, but we do try to deliver a little to help where we can and giving back to our fellow Veterans is our main concern.”

With positive feedback coming from city officials, local citizens, law-enforcement and the Veterans & patriots in attendance, a hearty “MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!” was proudly declared. The Salute to American Veterans Rally committee members

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT Jaliscea Grantham is an active-duty Army soldier. She works as a paralegal at the Fort Carson Legal Assistance Office. Jaliscea has donated over 600 hours to the Mt. Carmel Community Connections program. She recently volunteered her time to help move a large quantity of furniture. This furniture goes to support members of the local military community who are in need. Jaliscea loves giving back to Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center and the Community Connections program in this way since the same program provided furniture to her household when she moved to Ft. Carson. Her entire family gives back and volunteers together including her father. She also invested personal funds to buy a trailer to help Community Connections move even more furniture for military and veteran families.

Due to her dedication and generosity, Jaliscea was chosen as the Mt. Carmel Veteran Service Center Volunteer of the Year. Her gratitude and dedication shine through her interactions and volunteer service. At her recognition ceremony, she was awarded a movie basket to enjoy with her family. She has continued to be appreciative and still volunteers regularly with Mt. Carmel Community Connections. Jaliscea sets a high bar in giving back! Mt. Carmel is proud to have her on our side.

WOMAN DEDICATED TO HELPING VETERANS HEAL TO BE HONORED POSTHUMOUSLY AT 2022 RALLY Known to thousands of Veterans as “Lil Sis”, Monica Harvey was a Nebraska native who dedicated her time and talent traveling to Veterans homes, hospitals, reunions, and in particular following the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Traveling Wall at her own expense. In her time, Monica volunteered at over 150 WALL events in 30+ States from 2004 until her passing.

Monica’s Father, Corporal Eben B. Scott or “Scotty” as he was known to his fellow Soldiers was a WWll Veteran who was with the 10th Mountain Division, 137th Quartermaster Battalion, and was trained at Fort Carson in 1942.

RED FRIDAY

FREE T-SHIRT GIVEAWAY (while supplies last - limit one shirt per person - must be present at park)

During the War, Scotty carried Wounded Soldiers from the front lines in a Medical Evac Truck in Italy and Switzerland. Monica carried on that Family Tradition by touching the hearts of those with “Invisible Wounds” as she offered her own “welcome home” to Veterans in need of comfort and companionship. She was instrumental in getting Nebraska Highway 83 designated as the “Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Highway”. She organized some “Welcome Home” celebrations for Vietnam Veterans along the Highway. This was the beginning of her ultimate calling and ministry to veterans. In 2001, Monica founded the “Veteran’s Music Ministry” as an outreach to all Veterans, but especially Vietnam Veterans. She sang at Veterans Homes, hospitals, psychiatric wards, and correctional centers, and anywhere else she could find veterans that needed encouragement. Monica was probably best known for the “Band Aid For the Heart” pins that she passed out everywhere she went. The pin symbolized her mission in life, to point people back towards God where they could find true healing for their wounded heart. In the process she made many lifelong friends. When not travelling, Monica was continuing her encouragement of vets through the phone, email, and Facebook. Monica passed on August 2nd, just before the 2019 Veterans Rally. That would have been her 12th consecutive Rally.

The Salute to American Veterans Rally Committee is honored and humbled to be dedicating a bronze plaque in honor of this great American on Saturday, August 20th as part of the new Veterans Memorial in Woodland Park. Please join us in Memorial Park for the dedication.

Show your support for our Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen, and National Guardsmen by wearing R.E.D. every Friday from now until they all come home. Come to Memorial Park in Woodland Park on Friday August 19th beginning at 10:00 AM and get yours!
