Dear Side Creek Community, Parent Coffees continue to bring about the collaboration of parents and families in tandem with administration at Side Creek. Your voices are so valuable to the success of all of our students! The next Coffee with the Principal is scheduled for February 26. It will be an open forum for you to share questions, comments, successes, and concerns. We hope to see you there. It was such a treat to see so many of you at “For the Love of Reading” engaging with students in literacy activities, writing stories, and listening to the magical weaving of storytelling. Students were so proud to showcase what they know about reading and writing with you. Parents and families, thank you for your attendance at our spring round of conferences. These meetings are such a valuable time to come together in collaboration for the success of each of our students. Planning Ahead! It is that time again. TCAP testing will take place the first 2 weeks of March for 3rd – 5th grade. It is important that any doctor’s appointments or any other commitments be rescheduled if possible. We know that kids perform their best with their class and teacher as instead of a make-up session. Please understand that cell phones will be collected during testing to prevent a disruption, which could result in a misadministration of a test. If you do not want us to collect your child’s cell phone, please plan to keep them at home on these days. Also remember to have your kids get a good’s night rest, and eat a hearty breakfast. We will provide snacks on testing days. The schedule below highlights the testing sessions and start times for each. Attention Airplane Lovers and Future Pilots! Students at Side Creek has been given FREE museum passes for the Wings Over the Rockies Museum. This museum is located in old Lowry Air Force Base in Denver. Every student will receive a free pass along with this newsletter. This museum houses over 40 airplanes and space vehicles. Be sure to take advantage of this free offer! These tickets cover the entrance fee for your child, but not the fee for any accompanying adults. Attention Parents/Guardians Have you moved? Does Aurora Public Schools have a current address on file for you? If not, you will need to visit Centralized Admissions (no appointment necessary) to complete the “Student Demographic Change” form. You must bring current ***proof of address and a photo I.D. with you. Frequently Asked Questions Q. If I move from one address to another within APS, how do I enroll my child at the new school? Does my child have to change schools? Any time a family changes their address, they must visit our Centralized Admissions site to verify residency and complete the Student Demographic Change Form. Once the address is verified, parents will be notified if there will be a change of school. If there is a change of school, you will be issued an admission slip to take to the new school. Currently and subject to change, if the parent’s address changes during the school year and the new address is no longer within the boundaries of the school, but still within the District, the student may complete the school year at the school the student is currently attending. A student who becomes a nonresident of the District during the school year shall be allowed to complete the current school year in the school that the student is attending, unless that school becomes unavailable. Q. I have several children that attend different schools. Will I need to contact them, too? No. Centralized Admissions will change the address and Centralized Admissions will notify each school. Q. If several families live at the same address will this change the address for every family? No. Each family has a separate household even if they share the same address. It is extremely hard to keep active during winter but encourage your child to live a healthy lifestyle by exercising 60 minutes a day. Side Creek Staff has been focusing on healthy eating during the months of January and February which has been a great motivator during the winter. In PE class, we have been focusing on activities that require cooperation, positive sportsmanship, and teamwork! We have been working on our basketball skills, hockey skills, and team handball. Along with these activities we have been also incorporating jump roping, cup stacking, and climbing. Many of these activities emphasize safety so it has been important we are following the rules and taking responsibility for our actions.

Es extremadamente difícil mantenerse activo durante el invierno, pero motive a su hijo(a) a vivir una vida saludable al hacer ejercicio 60 minutos al día. Our exciting news is those students that participated in the Blue Anthem Get Fit, Get Active Challenge won a Radio Disney Dance Party at school. Those that participated will be able to attend the Dance Party and will be able to invite a friend. All participants will be notified of when the Dance Party will take place as soon as the date is confirmed with Radio Disney. Just a reminder that the Flat 14er program will be offered to students in Grades 1-5 this spring! Students will be given the choice whether they want to run/ walk the course during recess. Side Creek has Sunshine Peak which stands at 14,001 ft and it takes 48 laps to climb the mountain. There are fun incentives along the way and we generally start after Spring Break.

En la clase de Educación Física (o PE, por sus iniciales en inglés), hemos estado enfocándonos en actividades que requieren la cooperación, la deportividad positiva, y el ¡trabajo en equipo! Hemos estado trabajando en nuestras habilidades de basquetbol, jockey, y balonmano (“handball”) de equipo. Junto con estas actividades hemos incorporado tambien el brincar, saltar la cuerda, encimar vasos, y escalar. Muchas de estas actividades enfatizan la seguridad, así que ha sido importante que sigamos las reglas y que tomemos responsabilidad por nuestras acciones. Nuestras noticias importantes incluyen que aquellos estudiantes que participaron en el programa “Get Fit, Get Active” de Blue Anthem, ganaron una fiesta de baile en la escuela organizada por Radio Disney. Aquellos que participaron podrán asistir a la fiesta de baile y podrán invitar un(a) amigo(a). Todos los participantes serán notificados de cuándo se llevará a cabo la fiesta en cuanto la fecha sea confirmada con Radio Disney. In technology, the projects are reinforcing this quarter’s Science and Social Studies Units. • Kindergarten is learning about map skills and will create their own maps using symbols. • First grade will reinforce their unit “Pebbles, Sand, and Silt” by learning about types of soil and learning facts about earthworms. • Second grade is researching extreme weather conditions and creating a slide show about their findings. They will also do an interactive activity that shows them how weather is predicted. • Third grade is going to be researching various extreme geological events as they complete their science unit “Weathering and Erosion”. • Fourth grade’s focus will be on Social Studies. They learn about the various regions of the United States throughout the year. In technology we will research the various states that make up each region and discover what those states have in common. • Fifth grade will dive into the problem of “Global Warming” and find out what we can do to help with this problem.

Library News Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss! Mrs. Snelling has been planning our yearly celebration for Dr. Seuss’ Birthday. It is planned for March 3rd. This is a celebration for our primary students. Mrs. Snelling has invited some military personnel from Buckley Air Force Base to read to our students. The specialist team is also planning some activities for the celebration.

APS Preschool Screening APS is now screening preschool students for the 2014-15 school year. Screening begins in February and continues through April 16. To be eligible for the preschool program, children must be 3 or 4 years old on or before Oct. 1, 2014. In order for your child to be considered, a parent or legal guardian must attend the preschool screening process. Children do not need to be present at the time of screening. All families must participate in the screening process to be eligible for the Colorado Preschool Program or tuition-based preschool.
