There will be activities for children and we will have Santa’s company for the evening. The café will be open to serve hot drinks and light refreshments. Café on the Rec is part of the community work of Stowmarket Salvation Army.

It is volunteer led and on occasions during the past few months we have not been able to open due to shortage of people. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people and learn new skills. id you know that the air you breath out is a potentially rich source of information about what’s going on inside your body? Owlstone Medical Ltd, a Cambridgebased company are world-leaders in the field of breath research and are trying to develop new breath tests for disease that will save lives and cut healthcare spending, using their Breath Biopsy® platform. They’re currently working on a test for lung cancer that would make cancer screening both more pleasant and more effective. They need more breath samples for their current trial and they’re willing to pay you for your help! Giving a breath sample is easy and painless. For their current trial, Owlstone are looking to recruit both healthy volunteers and lung cancer patients with a BMI between

As a thank you for taking part, and helping with their ground-breaking research, Owlstone Medical will give all participants £300 compensation for their time, with any travel expenses also covered. All study participants will have their vital signs checked, undergo blood tests and then, after an intravenous injection, provide seven breath samples, over a period of 4-6 hours on the same day. They’ll then need to complete two telephone calls, three and eight days after the sampling. Wendy was one of the first lung cancer patients enrolled on Owlstone’s trial. Her cancer is early-stage, but it was only discovered by chance.

She hopes this research may give others that same chance of early detection which she had: “The mask is really comfortable, the nurses are so good and it’s been a relaxing, comfortable experience.” “Research like this is very important. So many people would benefit from this early detection

test which is amazing and why I was so keen to sign up to research and would encourage all patients to do the same.” If you are interested in participating, or you have any questions, you can contact Owlstone Medical via email at [email protected]

Heather and I have been to some very different but interesting things this month, starting with a teddy bears picnic at Red Gables with different groups coming along with their picnics and listening to stories. We also looked in on the Boys Brigade Hall for two sessions, the first one with the young members and the later session with older members. It is always good to get to see people of all ages enjoying their community groups.

These events were quickly followed by an invitation to the official opening of Grace Cook Primary School on Chilton Leys estate, and the launch of the Osier Café’s new location. The café in St Peter and St Mary’s Church has been open for a little while but it was a pleasure to help cut the cake and give it an official launch. The café will mean the Church will be open for breakfast, cakes, tea and coffee. The café fits into the Church well, and I wish them every success. We ventured out of town on Sunday 16th October to attend the Civic Service of Ipswich’s Mayor.

The next Thursday we attended the launch of a new exhibition at Stowmarket’s Food Museum, In Your Words, about dialect in East Anglia. Trafalgar Day is Friday 21st October and the following Saturday we attended the Royal Naval Association dinner at the British Legion, a great evening and an opportunity for the RNA to raise some money for their chosen charities - beware of the Swear Pig! As a start to the Poppy Appeal we are helping to plant a tree in the orchard at the Town Council offices, then officially launch the Stowmarket Poppy Appeal at the URC church. On Saturday afternoon we helped with the street collection which is an important part of the Legion’s Poppy Appeal fundraising. October finished with a trip to Beccles for their Mayor’s Civic Service. An enjoyable and somewhat busy month.

View from the Vicarage not be as good for the environment as a natural one but two trees in over four decades might be better for the world than chopping down a live one each year.

Rev’d Michael Eden When it comes to choosing a Christmas Tree, what would be your personal preference? Do you go for the natural look? A real tree? If so, there are so many different ones to choose from. Perhaps a Douglas Fir or a Colorado Blue Spruce. For me, for looks, it’s the good old Scotch Pine that says ‘Christmas Tree’ to me. Putting up and decorating the Christmas Tree is one of the most iconic symbolic actions of the season and is the focus of all sorts of family rituals. Are there any decorations that go onto your tree that have any special significance and bring a whole wave of happy memories flooding back of things that have happened in Christmases past? At the Vicarage, we have an artificial tree. I know that having something made of metal, tinsel and plastic may

The Christmas Tree has been used as a Christian symbol ever since the faith spread into Northern Europe. In the 9th century, a monk from Devon became a missionary and travelled to mainland Europe. The evergreen tree had already been used by the Church as an image to represent Eternal Life because, unlike deciduous trees, they don’t drop their leaves, even in the most severe of winters. Boniface noticed that if you stand back and look at a Christmas Tree, it has long branches at the base and they get smaller and smaller the higher up you move up the trunk until they reach a point at the top. So they are triangular in shape. Their threesided figure reminded Boniface of the threefold description of God as a Trinity. That is God, the Father and Creator who made the world we live in; God the Son, that’s Jesus Christ, who came into this world where things have gone wrong. And God the Holy Spirit who gives us the strength to face whatever obstacles this world can put in our way. In many other ways, the presence of the eternal God can be seen in the natural things that inhabit our planet. And that includes us as well.

It has been said that we are made in the image of God, which means there must be some good in every person. Unfortunately many of the things we do spoil that perfect part within us. No matter how hard we try, we still keep getting things wrong. That is why Jesus was born into this world at Christmas because God

loves this world so much that we will never be left to cope entirely on our own. That’s why the tree with all its decorations and the gifts that we place beneath it still reminds us of the God who loves us and cares for us and wants what’s best for us, on Christmas Day and every day.

St Peter & St. Mary’s preschool and see our, and all the other, trees. The colours are always beautiful.

The children at St.Peter & St. Mary’s preschool are still busy learning their colours , continuing on from Diwali and the lights to beautifully colourful pictures of fireworks on Bonfire night . We are getting the glitter out early to make bell decorations for our Tree at the Christmas tree festival. Please come along to the church

We shall, as always, be celebrating and supporting Children in Need . This year we will be dressing up in spots and having a cake stall which is always popular especially with the staff. We are also fundraising for the Sensory library which takes place in the library on the first Thursday of each month. It is a great resource for children with sensory needs. The Nativity Play is next on the list and practice sessions will soon be in full swing, its always a challenge but lovely to see the end result. We would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New year.

Myths of Equity Release Myth 1: You no longer own your own home False. A Lifetime Mortgage does not affect the ownership of your property. You will remain the owner of your property, with the debt being repayable when you pass away or move out of your home into long term care. Subject to the provider’s criteria you are also free to move. Myth 2: You can end up owing more than the value of your home False. All plans from lenders approved by the Equity Release Council feature a ‘No Negative Equity Guarantee’, which means that you or your heirs will never owe more than the value of your property. Should your property at the end of the plan be worth less than the amount borrowed, the remaining balance gets written off. Myth 3: You can’t release equity from your home if you have an outstanding mortgage False. In fact, repaying an existing mortgage is one of the most popular uses of a Lifetime

How can I save money on my household energy bills? Here are our top 5 energy saving tips: 1. Buy more efficient appliances

W

e’re all feeling the squeeze as we brace ourselves for big gas and electric bills over the next few months. On top of that, it looks like prices will be going up again in the autumn! So, we wanted to share with you some of our top tips for saving on your household energy bills. Of course, only a few of these things will be free, but you should think about the long-term. It may seem counter-intuitive to spend money in order to save it, but unfortunately these higher prices look like they’re going to be around for a while. Spending a little now to save yourself a fortune in the future is an investment worth making.

As they age and see more use, appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers can become a lot less efficient and can turn into real energy hogs. Upgrading to new machines does mean splashing out, but keeping your old ones can cost hundreds of pounds more in energy each year, so this is another great investment that will more than pay off in the long run.

actually save the average home around £50-70 per year, and it all adds up!

2. Check your home for drafts 4. Upgrade your boiler Especially important if you’re lucky enough to live in a beautiful older property, but just as important in newer homes too. Buy some draft excluders for your interior doors, and make sure exterior doors are well insulated. 3. Switch off appliances on standby Turning off your unused gadgets and appliances at the wall when you’re not using them may not seem like a big deal, but it can

professionally installed loft insulation can greatly reduce your central heating bill. Again, this is an investment that will more than pay for itself in terms of savings.

5. Insulate your loft

Insulating the loft of a typical family home usually costs around £495, but can save you up to £210 per year, every year – and that’s just at the cost of energy as it is right now. As prices rise, so will those savings!

This is probably one of the single biggest home improvements you can make to save you money on your energy bills. An extraordinary amount of heat can be lost through your roof, so ensuring you have

Should we go to Court if we can’t agree arrangements for children? if there is an imbalance between the parties or if one or both parties does not feel that informal discussions or mediation is appropriate.

T

he President of the Family Division, Sir Andrew McFarlane recently gave a speech entitled ‘When families fall apart, do they fall too easily into court?’. In his speech, he emphasized that court should be an option of ‘last resort’. Court should not be the first option for parties who cannot reach an agreement about how their children should spend time with their parents. Sir Andrew McFarlane highlighted that it was the parents’ responsibility, and not the courts’ to agree an arrangement for the children. He advised that separated parents should try ‘almost anything’ before resorting to court action. What other options are there? There are a range of options to consider when trying to agree child arrangements. These include the following:

- Informal discussions between yourselves. You may wish to have a family member or friend trusted by both parties help support the discussions. - Mediation. This is a structed process where an impartial third party, the mediator, assists the parents to resolve the matters in issue. They are trained to help with communication and negotiation. A mediator cannot provide either party with legal advice but can provide guidance on how a court may view the situation. You may wish to instruct a solicitor alongside the mediation. - Solicitor negotiation. This process can be more formal. Lawyers can engage in both written and verbal communications with the other party or their solicitor to help reach a solution. Instructing a solicitor can be particularly helpful

- Arbitration. This process involves the instruction of a qualified Arbitrator to provide a binding decision on the issues. Both parties must agree to engage in the process and be bound by the decision. Like with court, the decision is taken away from the parties and put in the hand of an independent third party. What should we consider trying to agree child arrangements? The children’s best interests should be paramount to any decision making and at the front of both parents’ minds. This can be difficult, especially if the relationship between the parents is highly fractured. In many cases, both parents want to spend time with their children and feel like they are missing out if the child is spending time away from them. The key to reaching agreement is often flexibility.

Often the practicalities of caring for the children will impact the children. The proximity of each parent’s home to the children’s school can play a big part in the arrangements. Ideally both parents will have the opportunity of taking the children to school, but this is not always possible. Working hours of the parents can also be a factor that needs to be considered. As children get older, they will have their own opinions on contact and more emphasis needs to be placed on their wishes and feelings. This can sometimes be difficult for parents to accept, particularly if they favour one parent over the other. In the majority of cases, the court will consider it in the children’s best interests to have contact with both parents but sometimes it is difficult to determine how this will work, particularly if a child is reluctant to engage. If you need help with negotiating child arrangements, contact Oslers Solicitors on 01449 774670 to discuss your case with a specialist lawyer.

Drama@themix youth theatre group recruiting new members!

Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket Cats Protection This month we are looking for a home for Sally Stranger who we think is about 9 years old. She has come into our care as she has had an injury to one of her hind legs and has needed surgery. Previously, she had been living as a semi stray in a small village where the residents had been feeding her and keeping an eye on her. Sally’s leg is improving although she can be a little lame at times but it doesn’t bother her at all. We are looking for a quiet home for her as an only pet, perhaps with older children, in a quiet, safe location. Sally is neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped. If you are interested in giving a home to Sally Stranger or any of the cats in our care please ring 01284 850887. More information can be found on our Facebook page and our website www.cats.org.uk/bury-st-edmunds

OBee CIC has obtained funding to train regular volunteers in timber framing and natural building. Our annual report shines a light on our progress. We keep a daily record of the number of days volunteers work with us and the type of activity they undertake. There are three categories of activities - unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled. In the last year the number of semi-skilled days has more than doubled (from 331.5 in 20-21 to 739 in 21-22). In the last month our Environmental Education work at Orchard Barn has been recognised by our local council – when we were chosen as finalists in MSDC/ Babergh’s Innovation Awards for the category of Sustainable Building.

Our innovative approach is that we are actively supporting local volunteers and trainees to increase their green credentials by working with locally sourced building materials, by using human energy instead of fossil fuels! At the award ceremony the winners were a local company called Natural Building Solutions – whom we congratulate for their work in reducing the carbon footprint of building! We are seeking more committed volunteers to get involved in the shingle roof project this winter. We offer free training to volunteers who can commit to one day a week on the project. Interested? Report for Wickham Market Flower Club meeting held on Thursday 27th October 2022 at Wickham Market Village Hall.

Rotary Club of Stowmarket Gipping Valley staff who would benefit from a RYLA course please email [email protected].

Secretary, but the arrangements for 2023 have already been completed, so we are talking of 2024. The position could easily be shared by two friends and there will be helpful guidance from the start. You have no idea how much you will be appreciated. The single stem competition was won by Jane Addison who also won the Novice competition. The Advanced competition was won by Jan Richardson. Well done to you both. June welcomed everyone to the meeting and said how nice it was to see two new members. Our Open Evening tickets were still available from Sue. (07786942450) Members £5 and Visitors £10. The demonstrator is David Thomson with “Let it Sparkle”. Wickham Market Village Hall, Thursday 24th November 2022. There will be a Raffle, Craft Table, Christmas Sales Table and Seasonal refreshments. All are welcome, do bring a friend. Geraldine had the Autumn Flower Arranger magazines for distribution and was also taking orders for 2023 copies. Items were requested for the Christmas Sales Table to be held at the Open meeting. Please bring along on the night. Sadly, NO BOOKS please. Both June and Geraldine again made a heartfelt plea for people to join the Flower Club Committee. The committee meetings we hold are quite good fun and more like a social event, while the arrangements for superb meetings are organised. We really need some help though and if maybe two people could join together and come along that would be excellent and very much appreciated. We do actually need a Programme

Our demonstrator Vicki Hease was welcomed to the meeting. Vicki last visited our club in 2014 when she demonstrated Treasured moments Part One. The story of a relationship, engagement and subsequent marriage, house move and baby girls christening all depicted with arrangements dedicated to the event. Tonight, we got to hear the remainder of the story in Part Two. The arrival of Twin brothers, a Silver Wedding Anniversary, First Granddaughter, Redesigning of the Garden, 60th Birthday parties and finally Christmas with the family. Using many varieties of Foliage, Biodegradable floral foam, and Chicken Wire, in a variety of containers and baskets Vicki soon filled the stage with a glorious selection of arrangements. Using Hebes, Red Roses, Dahlia’s. Gemini in superb colours, Pink Wax flowers, Fatsia leaves, Hydrangea, Conifer, Chrysanthemum, Nerines and Grasses to name but a few, it was a terrific bright and happy end to the story. Members winning any of these arrangements in the raffle were delighted.

Rod Curtis, the President of the Rotary Club of Stowmarket Gipping Valley presented Megan Baldry, the club’s RYLA candidate with a certificate for a fascinating talk regarding her recollection of her 2022 RYLA experience. RYLA stands for Rotary Youth Leadership Award and is an innovative leadership experience where young people can develop their skills as a leader while at the same time having fun. The course is run by a dedicated group of instructors at the Grafham Water Centre and lasts 7 days. Megan stressed that the experience benefited her greatly and gave her a great deal more confidence in dealing with the various work and personal situations thrown up day to day. The Rotary Club of Stowmarket Gipping Valley sponsors one or two candidates every year in partnership with business enterprises in the local area. planet! The UK has already made commitments, now they have to be turned into actions by governments and individuals.

Ian Jefferys one to the Parish Church Wardens came to speak about Cursillo at our November Home Worship.

It is also true though that we all have a lot else to deal with at the moment. Fortunately, many of the necessary cost of living changes we are facing are also good for the planet. Using less power, less fuel, rethinking our diet, our transport, changing our shopping habits, re-using, sharing, lending, repairing are all planetfriendly actions. This month we need to rethink Christmas. I’ve noticed that some TV and Radio interviewers seem to treat every change as undesireable, giving the impression that we have a right to be wasteful and thoughtless, to live exactly how we like and use whatever we want. Of course, it is important to highlight and respond to genuine need, especially amongst elderly, disabled and more vulnerable members of society, but sometimes we need to see the positive side of living more carefully. It doesn’t have to be miserable. Actions don’t have to be extreme and headline-making, millions of people are already steadily making changes for good. There is a hopeful ground-swell of citizen concern, there is community getting on and doing the actions we need . This month’s challenge is to celebrate Christmas and New year in a way that shows as much care for the environment as we show to our family and friends. We wish you a happy celebration and an optimistic New Year.

Cursillo first began in Spain after the Spanish Civil War, when soldiers were coming home after very traumatic experiences. It began on the island of Majorca in 1949 when a group of men began to pray, talk and work together to find a way to bring people to Christ. It soon spread to the mainland of Spain and today Cursillos are held all over the world both in Anglian and Roman Catholic Dioceses under the direction of their Bishops.

Our regular activities are: Collection of hard to recycle items (coffee pods, pet food pouches, medicine blister packs, pens, dental products, tetrapaks – see website for details) 2nd Sunday each month (11th December) at Red Gables 2-4 pm 4th Thursday each month (22nd December) on Market place 9:30 to 11.30 am. Please note that we finish at 11:30 Repair café. 2nd Sunday each month 2-4 pm at Red Gables Refreshments served while you wait. No charge for repairs but donations welcome. stowrepaircafe@gmail. com Volunteers of Stowmarket Every Tuesday 11-3 There are many ad hoc/ one-off activities too. Please get in touch if you would like to find out more or have some ideas to contribute. I am writing this on the day when it has been announced that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will attend the COP 27 talks in Egypt. This is a huge relief because it sends the message that reversing Climate Change is vital. There is no point in working on the economy if we don’t have a

The main event is a weekend away, and in East Anglia this is at Leiston Abbey. Cursillo’s vision is of a world transformed by the love of God nothing less than the kingdom of God on earth. (As we pray in the Lord’s prayer “They Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is inn Heaven.) Next month, December, is our special Christmas Home Worship, with Christmas decorations up, Carols, mince pies and more. Rev. Barbara Bilton, retired Dean of the Stowmarket Deanery, is going to lead our Christmas worship. Home Worship always meets once a month at 10 o’clock at 137 High Street, Needham Market all welcome this an outreach Group. After the talk we have tea/coffee/ biscuits and a friendly chat

T

his month we have two events which should be celebratory and joyous, but both can spell danger for people experiencing domestic abuse. Did you know that, nationally, during major football tournaments, domestic abuse increases by around a third? Studies have found that incidences are 38% higher on days when England lose a match than on tournament days when they weren’t playing. It was also 26% higher when the team won or when there was a draw. With the FIFA World Cup in progress, and due to end on 18th December, many people may be praying for a win more than others.

Christmas brings with it several stresses and expectations: present giving; money worries; families spending more time together indoors with children off school. These stresses, in turn, can lead to higher incidences of domestic abuse too. ACT run the Suffolk Domestic Abuse helpline in partnership with Suffolk County Council - it is free, completely

We provide support, advice and action on any kind of domestic abuse; physical abuse, financial abuse, coercive control, sexual abuse, gaslighting, stalking or any behaviour that has someone walking on eggshells, frightened of the consequences of their actions. Not all domestic abuse leaves a physical scar. If you’re concerned about someone else, think about their behaviour are they: • Making excuses for injuries? • Becoming less confident? • Constantly checking in with their partner? • Short of money all of the time? • Overly worried about pleasing their partner • Missing work / social events for no clear reason • Wearing clothes that cover their body, even in the heat? All of the above or a combination of them, if they’re unusual, could be signs of domestic abuse. Look out for your friends, family and colleagues and always call for advice if you need

to. Keep the Suffolk Domestic Abuse helpline number and website to hand in case you need to pass it on: 0800 977 5690 / www.suffolkdahelpline.org.uk. Amanda Page, Operational Manager at ACT says: “Our operators are all trained to support people that call the Suffolk Domestic Abuse helpline. There are several things that can happen as a result of a call, from simple telephone advice through to a national refuge search and a plan to flee an abuser. We work with many other charities and organisations to ensure that every caller receives the right support. Calling the helpline could help to save a life”

Domestic abuse is any kind of behaviour that leaves a person frightened of the consequences of their actions - that ‘walking on eggshells’ feeling. In ALL instances, that is wrong. There is NO excuse for abuse, ever. Amanda adds: “With many things happening right now, from the World Cup to festive celebrations, it’s important to know the signs of domestic abuse, both for yourself and for others. It’s also vital to know where to turn for help.” Suffolk Domestic Abuse Helpline: 0800 977 5690 www.suffolkdahelpline.org.uk

Politicians Must Tell Us the Truth including costs and the impact on our everyday lives. Endless U-turns add to the frustration.

Judy Terry

I

n my last article, I said it wasn’t the right time to have a third Prime Minister in as many months. Thankfully, I was wrong. Like many people, I’ve been shocked by what can only be described as incompetence in Government, with two major exceptions: delivering the coronavirus vaccine and supporting Ukraine. The Brexit agreement is already unravelling, especially the Northern Ireland protocol, because it was rushed through without independent scrutiny. I’ve always been proud to be British, world leaders alongside the USA, but we have become an international laughing stock lacking strong, decisive, leadership, with too many lies designed to support – unworkable – policies without detailed strategies,

I supported Rishi Sunak from the outset because we need stability and someone who can, literally, add up at a time when the country’s finances are in a poor state, not helped by two years of intermittent lockdown and populist politicians spouting rubbish. His intray is overflowing with inherited problems, with a £50 billion fiscal black hole and the Bank of England predicting a 2-year recession. Interest rates have already gone up to 3%, adding to the cost of living crisis. As he flies off to join other leaders at the climate change summit in Egypt, he will no doubt have sleepless nights considering the other issues awaiting his attention: Migration, which has got out of hand; we have always opened our country to genuine refugees, most recently from Afghanistan and Hong Kong, as well as Ukraine. The process for those arriving on Channel crossings must be speeded up, and any criminals deported. Which brings me to the next two problems: a lack of housing for

Unit 3, Alstons Court, Leslie Rd, Ipswich, Suffolk IP3 9PL

buying or renting, and it costs nearly £7m a day to house refugees in hotels. There is also a criminal backlog in the Courts which must be addressed urgently. The NHS is struggling, overwhelmed by bureaucracy without a clear strategy to deal with the 7 million patients awaiting urgent treatment. Problems can’t be solved overnight, but a detailed investment plan, region by region, would help. And we need a national inquiry into mental health services; there are too many deaths, disclosed in CQC reports, both in East Anglia and elsewhere. Education still hasn’t fully recovered after the pandemic, yet we have enormous talent which needs to be nurtured, encouraging

young people to discover the wide range of career options. They are our future. Climate change. The OBR (Office for Budget Responsibility) estimates that Net Zero could cost £1.4 trillion. Our emissions account for about 3% of the world’s, but we import essential goods from across the globe, instead of employing highly skilled people to make things here, and grow food instead of covering prime agricultural land with solar panels, or digging it up for new pylons to deliver off shore energy. An energy strategy is more urgent than ever, having been ignored for decades. Trust in politicians is at an all-time low; it can be earned by telling us the truth.

Stowmarket model Railway club What a busy month October was! At the beginning of the month the club held a Toy & model fair and on 23rd we were invited to exhibit at Bressingham for the day. The weather was atrocious, and we didn’t expect a lot of people to turn out, but how wrong we were! The hall was extremely busy with families turning out, so perhaps they needed to escape the rain!

Our main exhibit was our old Hornby 3 rail layout which actually received a lot of attention especially from children, who like to see trains running around however old they might be. Adults made several comments and enquiries. For further information about the club, go to www.stowmodelrail.club
