SUMMARY OF INFORMATION

DEADLINE IS August 10, 2014 REGISTRATION: Confirmation is open to anyone entering the 9th grade and older who has completed First Reconciliation and First Communion. Submit to the attention of Angie Allen via: the mail, offertory, the parish or school office.  Registration form with $50.00 fee.  Sponsor Covenant (obtain form from Mary Queen website @ cdlex.or/maryqueen)  Church of Baptism notification card (obtain form from Mary Queen website @ cdlex.or/maryqueen)  Baptismal Certificate (if not baptized at MQ) It is VERY important that baptismal certificates are turned in as soon as possible! The cost for all formation programs is $50.00 per student. Parents are encouraged to be a part of the Confirmation classes with their child and in fact will be needed at times for certain events or activities. All parents who will be volunteering their time will must receive Virtus Certification. Go to virtus.org to schedule a training session. REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCEPTANCE INTO CONFIRMATION PREPARATION:  Registered member of Mary Queen Parish  A history of religious education including First Reconciliation and First Communion  Weekly Sunday Mass obligation fulfilled  Baptismal Certificate submitted – we do not have your child’s baptismal certificate on file from their First Communion. Certificates can be faxed directly to Mary Queen at 859-278-2453. If your child was baptized at Mary Queen, you do not have to submit a copy.  Sponsor chosen by August 01, 2014 – Completed Registration form with the $50.00 fee. **CLASS INFORMATION: THE CONFIRMATION PROGRAM BEGINS SEPTEMBER 14, IN THE MARY QUEEN CHURCH AT 6:45PM FOLLOWING THE EVENING MASS (5:30PM). longer living or no longer a practicing Catholic) another acceptable sponsor can be chosen. Sponsors are strongly encouraged to attend classes, service and other events with their Candidate. Parents cannot be their own child’s sponsor. IF THE SPONSOR IS NOT THE SAME PERSON AS THE GODPARENT OR DOESN’T ATTEND MQ, the Parish Verification at the bottom of the Sponsor Covenant must be completed prior to the First Class. This will ensure that they are a practicing Catholic in good standing which is required to be a sponsor. (See Canon Law 893 and 874) RETREAT: A retreat experience is an important and exciting aspect of Confirmation preparation. On January 10, 2015 we will have a Confirmation retreat at Mary Queen from 10:00am- 3:00pm. This will be a special retreat for the candidates with music, small group sharing, games, prayer, the mass and special speaker. Attendance is mandatory. RECONCILIATION: It is important that Candidates receive the sacrament of Reconciliation before Confirmation. There will be special opportunities to do so before Confirmation. It is highly desired for the Sponsor and parents to receive the sacrament as well. At Mary Queen, reconciliation is offered every Saturday afternoon from 2:30-3:30pm.

Tener por lo menos 1 año de formación religiosa aparte de la preparación para la Primera Reconciliación y la Primera Comunión.

Cumplir con la obligación de asistir a misa los domingos. Haber entregado certificado de Bautizo – no tenemos su certificado de bautizo en archive de la Primera Comunión. No podemos obtener su certificado de Bautizo de la escuela. Los certificados se pueden enviar por fax directamente a Mary Queen al 859-278-2453. Nosotros podemos hacer copias para sus archivos si así lo desean. Si su hijo fue bautizado en Mary Queen no necesita entregar una copia. Los padrinos se tienen que escoger antes 1 de agosto - El candidato y el padrino tendrán tarea cada semana juntos y la preparación no se podrá llevar a cabo si no tienen un padrino. Forma de inscripción completa con los $50.00.

PADRINOS: Los requisitos para ser padrinos son ser personas mayores de 16 años, Católicos practicantes y confirmados. (Ver Derecho Canónico 893 y 874) Su primera opción debe ser su padrino de bautizo, (Derecho canónico 893 ^2). Si esto no es posible, (i.e. si ya no vive o ya no practica la religión Católica) otro padrino puede escogerse. Los Padres de familia no pueden ser los Padrinos de sus hijos. SI EL PADRINO ES DIFERENTE , LA PARROQUIA HARA LA VERIFICACION CON LA ALIANZA A QUE SE COMPROMETE Y DEBE DE COMPLETAR EL DOCUMENTO ANTES DE INICIAR LA PRIMERA CLASE. RETIRO: La experiencia del retiro es un aspecto importante y emocionante de la preparación para la Confirmación. El 10 de enero 2015 tendremos un retiro en Mary Queen 10:00am-3:00pm. Este será un retiro muy especial con música, compartir en grupos pequeños, los juegos, la oración, la misa y los altavoces especiales. Detalles Retreat se obtendrán. La asistencia es obligatoria. RECONCILIACIÓN: Es muy importante que los candidatos reciban el sacramento de la Reconciliación antes de la Confirmación. PRACTICE: Sunday, April 12 at 9:30am in the Church Sponsors should be present, but if unable, the parent will be responsible for communicating the seat assignments. Students will sit alphabetically, in front of the ambo. Sponsors will sit accordingly across the aisle. Families will be given a “script” so they may practice the Rite of Confirmation. Specific instructions and seat assignments will be given at the practice. MEETING WITH THE BISHOP It has become a regular practice in the Diocese of Lexington that the Bishop meets with the candidates as a group prior to celebrating of the Sacrament of Confirmation. Mary Queen fulfills this required component by having the candidates meet with the Bishop for one hour before the Sacrament Celebration on April 12, 2015. Candidates (only) will arrive at 4pm. This pre-sacrament meeting allows the candidates to meet the Bishop in a more personal atmosphere thereby facilitating the development of a sense of relatedness between the Bishop and the candidates. It also provides an opportunity for the Bishop to get to know the candidates better and assess their preparedness. Sunday April 12, 2015 candidates (only) will arrive at 4:00pm to meet as a group with the Bishop in the church classroom AB. The candidates must be seated and attentive by the Bishop’s arrival. It will be a discussion-like atmosphere and candidates are expected to contribute to the discussion. Candidates are also expected to pay attention, remain quiet and respectful and demonstrate the sanctity of the Sacrament of Confirmation. The Bishop has the right to determine any candidates’ readiness by their behavior at this group meeting. If the Bishop feels that a candidate is not ready for the Sacrament, he will excuse the candidate from the celebration of the sacrament. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ SERVICE HOURS (Complete by January 5, 2014): Because we don’t EARN the sacrament of Confirmation, an emphasis on service to the community is an effort to reinforce our children to help others. The service hour component of the Confirmation program allows families to broaden their experiences – learning new things about our community and recognizing Christ around us. There are 10 service hours required. The 10 hours must be from at least 2 different activities. For example, if you are an altar server every weekend, all 10 hours cannot be from that single activity. All Confirmation Candidates will be required to serve a 2 hour shift at the Fall Festival October 4-5, 2014. Service for school or scouts can be applied to Confirmation. On the service hour form, an adult WITNESS signature is needed. You do not have to get the signature of the leader of the service activity. It is highly desired that the candidates for Confirmation experience service both within and outside of the parish. However, this is not required. There will not be an assignment associated with choosing to do this. The candidate will however explain why they chose this name in their Letter to the Bishop. This Saint name will not be recorded in the parish records or on their certificate. It will be a choice shared between the candidate, their Saint and the Bishop. Las cartas deben de estar listas a mas tardar el domingo 8 de diciembre. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Guideline for Letters to the Bishop Writing a letter to Bishop Gainer is a practice that is required for several reasons. Primarily, it encourages the candidates to reflect on why it is that they want to receive the sacrament. By articulating the reasons for wanting to receive the sacrament, candidates can gain a deeper understanding of their own faith life and can develop a greater sense of ownership/participation in what is about to take place. The Bishop also enjoys this practice and gains valuable insight into the personalities and thought-processes of the candidates. This adds a sense of familiarity to the celebration of the sacrament thereby contributing to a feeling of communion. Letters to the Bishop should reflect the individual character and style of each candidate. While honoring the letters as unique expressions, the following three topics should be worked into the letter’s body: 1. Biographical Information – The candidate should introduce themselves to the Bishop. Who are they? How old are they? What grade are they in? What parish do they belong to? How big is their family? What are some of their favorite things? 2. Description of Preparation – the candidate needs to communicate to the Bishop how he or she has prepared for the reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation. 3. Personal Meaning – The candidate should reflect on what the reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation means to them. (4.) If the candidate is going to choose a Confirmation name, the letter should also indicate the choice of name and the reason for this choice. Things to avoid: Illegibility – The letters should be typed. In the event that the letters are handwritten, parents or catechists should check them for legibility. A letter that cannot be read is of no real value in establishing a relationship between the candidate and the Bishop. The parent or catechist does not have to read the letter, but a quick glance will reveal its legibility. Thoughts of EARNING Confirmation – Confirmation is a gift freely given by God out of love. We do not earn Confirmation through service hours or attendance or class work. We are not capable of doing anything to merit such an expression of Divine Love. Pleading for the Sacrament – Candidates should be encouraged to reflect on what the sacrament means to them and their life rather than viewing the letter as a “plea” for the sacrament. Candidates should submit their letter to the Bishop to their Confirmation Catechist no later than Sunday December 8th. DAY OF CONFIRMATION: Candidates arrive to the church classroom AB by 4:00pm. No gum chewing. Girls: must have shoulders covered, a modest neckline and hemline, no jeans and wear dress shoes. Boys: no jeans or tennis shoes and should wear a dress shirt with tie (jacket is optional). Red is traditionally the symbolic color for Confirmation. Any color is acceptable to wear. Programs will be printed which outline the order of Mass and can be taken home for a memento. A group photo will be taken after the Mass and will be available to purchase. Order forms are forthcoming. The Bishop welcomes individual photos taken with him after the Mass. Certificates will be available immediately following the Mass in the gathering area. There will be a cookie and punch reception in the gathering area immediately following the Mass. Additional requirements and guidelines for Confirmation put forth from the Bishop’s office can be viewed by going to: www.cdlex.org – click on Religious Education and click on the document “Confirmation Preparation Guidelines.” You can also view four other documents pertaining to celebrating Confirmation by going to: www.cdlex.org – click on Worship Office and scroll down to the heading of “Confirmation” on the right hand side. Lineamientos para la Carta del Obispo Escribir una carta al Obispo es una práctica que se requiere por varias razones. Especialmente, anima al candidato a reflexionar sobre las razones por las que quiere recibir el Sacramento. Al hacer esto los candidatos realmente pueden llegar a entender su propia fe y pueden desarrollar un verdadero conocimiento de lo que van a recibir y porque. El Obispo disfruta de esta práctica y aprende a conocer las personalidades de los candidatos. Esto le da un sentido de familiaridad a la celebración y contribuye a un sentimiento de verdadera comunión. Las cartas al Obispo deben reflexionar acerca del carácter individual y el estilo de cada candidato. Al hacer honor a las cartas como expresión única estos temas se pueden desarrollar: 1. Información Biográfica- El candidato se debe presentar al Obispo. Decir quién es, cuantos años tiene, en qué grado está, a que parroquia pertenece, como es su familia? 2. Descripción de la preparación – el candidato necesita comunicarle al Obispo como se ha preparado para recibir el Sacramento. 3. Significado personal – El candidato debe reflexionar sobre el significado del Sacramento. (4.) Si el candidato va a escoger el nombre de algún Santo para su nombre de Confirmación debe especificarlo en la carta y la razón por la cual lo ha escogido. Cosas que hay que evitar: Ilegibles – Las cartas deberán ser escritas en la computadora. En caso de que las cartas sean escritas a mano, las catequistas las tendrán que revisar para asegurarse que son legibles. Las catequistas piensan que las cartas son un asunto privado entre el Obispo y el candidato, sin embargo una carta que no es legible no tiene un valor real y no puede establecer relación alguna entre las partes interesadas. Las catequistas no leerán las cartas, solo las verán para verificar que sean legibles. Creer que la Confirmación se puede “Ganar”– La Confirmación es un regalo otorgado por Dios con amor. La Confirmación no se “gana” por hacer horas de trabajo o ir a clases. No hay nada que podamos hacer para ganar semejante mérito que es una expresión de amor puro de Dios. Pedir el Sacramento– Los Candidatos deben de reflexionar en lo que el Sacramento significa en sus vidas en vez de verlo como un pedido especial por medio de una carta. Los candidatos no necesitan convencer al Obispo para que les confiera el Sacramento. DÍA DE LA CONFIRMACIÓN: Llegada a las 4:00 en la tarde en la iglesia salón AB No se permite masticar chicle Las chicas deben de tener los hombros cubiertos y el escote debe de ser modesto, al igual que la línea del vestido, no pantalones de mezclilla y no tenis. Los hombres no deberán de usar mezclilla ni tenis y deberán usar camisa de vestir con corbata. El saco es opcional. El color rojo es tradicionalmente el color de la Confirmación. Pueden usar cualquier color. Los programas se imprimirán con el orden complete de la misa y se los podrán llevar para recuerdo. Se les pide a los padres de familia de la manera más atenta que se abstengan de tomar fotos o video durante el Rito ya que esto es una distracción a la Santidad del sacramento. Una foto de grupo se tomara después de la misa y estará disponible para la compra. Las formas de la foto se entregarán antes del Sacramento. El Señor Obispo esta disponible para que se le tomen fotos individuales después de la misa. Los certificados estarán disponibles después de la misa en el área de la entrada a la iglesia. Habrá una recepción con galletas y ponche inmediatamente después de la ceremonia..
