“The Big Smile” 2022 SCHOOL ENROLMENT

“The Big Smile” 2022 Following a massively successful 2021, we are delighted to announce details of The Big Smile 2022, this year’s campaign of fully guided, day-long, fundraising walks for schools and school communities. 2022 will see a tightly packed schedule of our favourite regional walks. All walks are circular and will be around 20 km in length, representing a good challenge for an adult with average fitness.

A North East charity promoting the physical health and mental wellbeing benefits of walking as a form of regular healthy exercise, with a particular focus on school children and their families.

Teachers comments 2021 Martin Gray - Head of St Matthew’s RC Primary School, Prudhoe We were delighted to get involved with The Big Smile for so many reasons. It provided our staff with a well overdue chance to relax and enjoy each other’s company on a beautiful walk. We support the charity in endorsing taking children outdoors, walking and talking as a means of improving both their physical health and their emotional wellbeing, especially after recent Covid lockdowns. The associated fundraising helped the charity pay for all of the lovely walking boots for our Year 6 children. Alison Holtham – Deputy Headteacher at St Bede’s RC Primary School, Sacriston As a staff we thoroughly enjoyed being a part of The Big Smile this summer and to see the children now receiving their walking boots is fantastic. The Big Smile is a great project and the Walk & Talk Trust is a great charity. We look forward to participating again next year. Avril Armstrong - Headteacher, Emmaville Primary School, Crawcrook We were delighted to participate in this Walk and Talk Trust initiative. The charity does a splendid job of encouraging and inspiring people to enjoy walking and exploring the countryside. Members of our staff completed a 12 mile walk up High Cup Nick. We were sponsored by family, friends, parents and carers, which enabled us to raise money to help the Walk and Talk Trust buy walking boots for all of our Year 6 pupils.

Teachers comments 2021 Catherine Young - Headteacher, St Benet's RC Primary School, Ouston We've loved taking part in the Big Smile from the walk with the teachers through to the children receiving their boots. It has inspired us to get outside and explore our local area whilst reaping those physical and wellbeing aspects of walking which are so important as we continue to live with Covid. Denise Thompson - Head of Ravensworth Terrace Primary School, Birtley The children were genuinely thrilled to receive their boots. They all put them straight on, and the smiles, laughter, and chatter were heart-warming. One girl was walking out of school like she was on a catwalk because she loved her boots so much! They all said their parents were really impressed with the boots when they got home Steph Hughes - Year 6 teacher & Special Educational Needs Co-Ordinator, St Mary’s Primary School, Blackhill Taking part in The Big Smile was a wonderful thing to do for us, it was great team-building, and we’re so glad to have done this lovely thing to benefit the children. We hope they’ll now find it easier to get out and about, and enjoy the beautiful area we live in
