Contrary to the negative news/media coverage, the last few months of 2022 were quite incredible with many completions taking place on some really quite outstanding properties…some of which were on a “Discreet Marketing” basis, ie not even on the internet! The start of 2023 so far, looks like continuing this trend with valuations flooding in, properties coming on the market and sales being agreed. We continue to be creative, passionate and dedicated to the cause, just take a look at our Google Reviews! Our experienced staff of many years, working alongside our motivated clients, will continue to keep this going.

Dyakuy Paul Barnes and his Ukrainian wife Tanya and daughter Masha, want to say dyakuy - thank you - to all those from the Three Villages walking group and members of the Newbold Verdon Baptist Chapel for their generous donations of warm clothing, footwear, blankets,
medical supplies and toys they received on behalf of the Kalyna Ukrainian centre in Leicester just before Christmas. The many donations collected have now been sorted at the centre by a large team of volunteers (including some Ukrainian locals) and transported by lorry to the Polish-Ukraine border where they will be distributed. At present these vital trips take place once a fortnight. Since arriving in the United Kingdom, not long after the war started last February, the family has been trying to build a new life for themselves until such time as they can return to Ukraine. Paul is a native of Newbold Verdon but has lived in Kyiv for eighteen years, where he met and married Tanya. The family has been very grateful for the help and kindness shown to them over the past twelve months from family, friends and strangers. And they in turn have been trying to do their bit for their family, friends and fellow Ukrainians back home. Very few people in the western world will have experienced war first-hand as Paul has. He recalls how it unfolded and how, as a family, they are trying to help those back home. ‘It was all very sudden at the beginning. We never had imagined the capital Kyiv being attacked. We spent the first three
nights in a bunker under bombardment of bombs and missiles together with a hundred people, including their cats and dogs. It was quite surreal – but a nightmare in reality. Understanding the situation was worsening by the hour we made the decision to leave. We literally grabbed our rucksacks with what little they had in: we left our home, our belongings and valuables. In a moment of complete fear and chaos, we luckily escaped, eighteen hours later reaching the Moldovan border. And although now settled in the UK, we remain traumatised knowing it is relentlessly ongoing for the innocent people still there. We are able to remain in contact with some family members and friends who all express the desperate need for clothing, blankets and footwear, particularly for the many soldiers, volunteers and those who have been left homeless in the devastation. We’re told that as the seasons change, needs will change, but the demand for bedding, medical supplies, toiletries and clothes will continue. And whilst the Kalyna centre continues to send, we will continue to collect. If anyone, or any organisation, would like to help in our efforts to support Ukraine, please give me a ring at 07437 206651.’ Paul Barnes

10K Charity Swim at Bosworth Academy
Olympic gold medallist swimmer Becky Adlington recently visited Bosworth Academy to cheer on former student, Rachel Tuckey, who completed a 10Km swim in aid of Leicester Hospitals Charity. Rachel was inspired to take on a four-stage challenge to raise money for the charity after Leicester Hospitals took care of her four-year-old son, Oscar, when he was born with severe health problems. “Oscar turned four in September, a milestone we didn’t know we would meet; hence the four challenges. I knew I wanted to do four challenges, but I didn’t really know where to start - I
4
got the inspiration for the challenges from the four elements; Earth, Air, Water and Fire,” said Rachel. The Water stage of the fundraising saw Rachel, along with five friends, swim 10 Km in Bosworth Academy’s swimming pool on Sunday 18 December 2022 and Becky Adlington was there to set the swimmers off. Speaking to the Leicester Mercury before the swim, Becky Adlington said she was “keen” to support Rachel. “Nothing is more traumatic to a parent than when your little one is sick…which is why I was so keen to show my support for Rachel,” said Becky. “As parents we are often so busy taking care of everyone else - we forget to check in on ourselves. “It’s great to hear Rachel has found swimming so therapeutic during her difficult time. It’s such a great activity to switch off and focus on your breathing,” added Becky. Representatives from Leicester Hospitals Charity, Total Swimming Academy and Bosworth Academy joined Rachel’s friends and family poolside to see Rachel complete the 10Km swim in 3 hours 39 minutes, ahead of her 4.5-hour goal. “The poolside atmosphere was brilliant and really got us through the swim. We all did far better than our targets which is fantastic and I am so proud of all of the swimmers,” said Rachel. Bosworth Academy’s Post 16 Student Fundraising Team were in attendance to help run the concession stand. “Helping out for the charity swim was really enjoyable, everyone was so kind and generous to help raise money for

the charity,” said student Neely G. “Meeting Becky Adlington was an honour, she was lovely and spoke to us about the fundraising that we were doing and was interested in finding out what we did before. The swim was a huge success in raising money for a well-deserved charity!” An estimated £1,600 was raised from the swim with a current total of £7,982 from the three challenges. Rachel is hoping to go beyond her £8,000 target in time for her final challenge of a 10K Wolf Run on 23 April 2023. Parkrun comes to Market Bosworth Keen runners or anyone looking to get more active can now join Market Bosworth’s new free and friendly parkrun. The event officially launched on Saturday 7th January and takes place every Saturday morning at Market Bosworth
Country Park. Participants can enjoy a timed 5K (just over three miles) walk, jog or run that everyone is welcome to join. Parkrun is a free and weekly event that takes place at different venues worldwide. It offers a welcoming and inclusive experience where there is no time limit, and no one finishes last. Everyone is welcome to come along, whether they walk, jog, run, volunteer or spectate. All events are run by teams of dedicated volunteers from the local community. Each week also benefits from a ‘first timers’ briefing at 8:45am for those doing their first event, followed by a group briefing at 8:55am. The run then starts at 9am. Children are welcome, but those under eleven must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. John Kilcoyne and Huw Davies of the core team said: “It’s fantastic that we’ve finally got parkrun off the ground in Market Bosworth. There has been an incredible response from the local community, and we’ve had over 600 people running, jogging, walking and volunteering in our first two events alone. Those taking part
have ranged from primary school age children right up to octogenarians. There are families walking the course together, people running with their dogs and pushing infants in buggies, not forgetting some fantastic runners of all paces. It really is there for everyone regardless of age or ability. We’re excited to see how the event evolves and would love to hear from people who would like to get involved in volunteering to help put the event on each week.” To find out more about this event visit https://www.parkrun.org.uk/ marketbosworthcountrypark/ Facebook @Market Bosworth Country Park parkrun or email marketbosworthcountrypark@ parkrun.com

From The Archives Public Houses of Newbold Verdon It was heartening to read the other day that the Windmill Inn is currently ranked number 2 out of 738 eating establishments in the Leicester area by Trip Advisor. Together with the Jubilee Inn and the Newbold Verdon Sports and Social Club, the Windmill continues to provide a real service to our community.
Records and articles stored in the NVPA archives show that there has been a history of pubs, clubs and inns in and around the village for at least 270 years.

Many would have been no more than the front room of someone’s house, but others, like the George and Dragon that once stood where the doctor’s surgery is today, provided food and entertainment. Licensing records obtained from the Records Office in Wigston, name the Shoulder of Mutton (1753) as the first public house to be licensed, though this does not mean that it, or others, had not been around before that time. Licenses were also granted in the 1700s to the following: Queens Head (1759), The Holly Bush (1783), The Star (1790), The Sun Inn (1791), and The Swan (1786). For a parish of no more than 350 people, six licensed premises do seem rather a lot. In fact, it is quite likely that places changed their name. There is evidence, for example, that the George and Dragon, a coaching inn on the Foston turnpike road, possibly started off as The Star before becoming The Holly Bush and then, finally, the George and Dragon. Things continued in the same vein during the 1800s. As well as The Swan, The Sun Inn, and George and Dragon, other hostelries included: The Red Lion (1822), The Bricklayers Arms (1843 – later named The Engine (1868)), The Reindeer (1841), The Windmill (1861) and The Jubilee (1887). It is highly likely
that the ground where the Jubilee stands was also home to The Reindeer. No doubt these places proved very popular and a welcome distraction to the hard grind the agricultural labourers and coalminers had to endure, but it will not be a surprise to find that alcohol also led to trouble. The local newspapers throughout the 19th century reported many alcohol fuelled incidents both inside and outside the public houses of the village. For example, in May 1843 George Barrs stabbed Robert Cave outside the Bricklayer’s Arms after a drunken quarrel. There were also cases of domestic violence, arson, feuding, and even murder! If you want to know more about the pubs of Newbold Verdon, or would like to contribute to the archive today with your memories of our drinking establishments of the 20th and 21st century, why not email us at
[email protected] The archive is about recording what is happening in the present as much it is about telling the story of the past. PS: Thanks go to Allan Gayton for his research into the drinking establishments of Newbold Verdon, upon which much of which this article was based.

Update from your Borough Councillors A new year means new beginnings, and we were delighted to have the opportunity to witness the new vicar for Newbold Verdon, Barlestone, Peckleton and Kirkby Mallory, Johnny Gordon, licensed this month. Our churches play a huge role within our communities and to be part of this special occasion was fantastic. We wish Johnny and his family every happiness and success in our villages. 159 Bus Service. Over the past month we have ensured every resident affected by the loss of this bus service has been told about the plans and offered the opportunity to sign a petition to save this vital route that serves Newbold Verdon, Stapleton and Barlestone. We have had a brilliant response with over a thousand residents having signed the petition, all of whom shared their anger and disbelieve that this route will be axed due to the dire financial situation at the County Council. At recent Parish Council meetings residents have quite rightly wanted to know what will replace this service and so far, we have had no concrete responses from the local
Conservative County Councillors. Two suggestions have been an on-demand DRT service that will provide a once weekly journey, if booked the night before and a ludicrous suggestion of providing an electric bike service. Both ideas are ridiculous and will not work for the many people left abandoned by the removal of this service and both of which have no consideration to those with any kind of impairment. We will continue to make sure your voices will be heard by the County Council and we hope that they will listen to you all and how removing the 159 will make getting to work, school or to the shops impossible. Local Plan Update As you will be aware over the past few years we have consulted on the next local plan for Hinckley and Bosworth, which aims to shape how the Borough will grow in future years and is a statutory requirement which all Councils have to produce. The current plan is in date until 2026 but producing a local plan is like painting the Forth Bridge by the time the current one is complete you have to start on the next one! A huge amount of work has gone into developing this plan and we would like to thank everyone who has responded to the consultation, but it is now apparent that the original timescale for adopting the new plan needs to be lengthened. There are two main reasons for this: First, and most frustratingly, the Conservative run County Council have refused to provide the Borough with support for the highways and transport elements of the plan. Their input is vital and without it, the plan is almost impossible to complete. Secondly, the Government have said they want to change the planning system. Currently the Government imposes top-down housing targets which means approving many

There have been suggestions that the Government may change this, therefore like many other councils, the decision has been taken to see what comes out of the Government’s review. If you have visited us recently, you may have noticed that we have started a minor reorganisation of the library layout. Since taking over, there have been major changes in the way it is used. For example, we had 10 desktop PCs for public use, but have found that only on very rare occasions are more than 2 or 3 in use at the same time, particularly since the pandemic. More and more customers for example now use their mobile phones to send prints to our printer. We therefore decided to reduce the number of PCs to 3, and re-use the space created to allow us to extend our very popular Children’s Area including some additional shelving. At present, the space is also being used to accommodate visitors to our Warm Space. The Committee would like to thank Brian Davison for his help in making this happen. It was great to hear that the January session of our Construction Club was the best attended ever! The Club has been running for some years offering
12
children the chance to build with Lego, MegaBloks, etc. with a very small attendance fee. If someone in your family likes building and would like to do it with others, please come along to Our Library on the second Saturday each month between 10.30am and 11.30am. We even offer free tea and coffee to the adults! Thank you to Gail Horsley for making this happen. January has also seen our first refresh of the art provided by pupils of Oakwood School. Come along and take a look – there are some very talented artists displaying their work on our wall! Finally, as always, an appeal to ask you to consider getting involved in our team. Our ability to open our doors and provide the services and activities that we do, is totally dependent on our ‘Volunteers’ – and actually there aren’t that many of us! A few more would make a great difference – training is provided and our current volunteers tell us that they enjoy the social aspects as much as anything else. News from Barlestone Parish Council It is hard to believe we are now in February 2023, the time passes so quickly.
Barlestone Parish Council’s Annual Citizen of the Year was decided at the meeting of the Parish Council in January and on a majority vote Mrs Sheila Lloyd was elected. Sheila has worked for many years at Barlestone Primary School and although this award is not given for paid services, Sheila has consistently gone over and above for the children. During the covid lockdown she dressed as the
14
Easter Bunny delivering socially distanced treats for the children, and at the Christmas lockdown she did the same dressed as Santa. Sheila spends so much of her own time doing things for the children. Clearly it was felt that this award is thoroughly deserved. Disappointment was expressed that HSBC bank have decided to close their branch in Market Bosworth. Local councils are looking at ways to mitigate the effect of this closure. Just after Christmas we were told by Severn Trent that our application for a grant for the work at May Meadow was not successful. This was a great disappointment and we now have to look at other ways of raising the finance for this expensive project. We would like to thank Mrs Tegg for all the hours she spent preparing the grant application, even though at the end of the day we were unsuccessful. If anyone would like to get involved in this project please contact the Clerk, details below. The Coronation of King Charles III is due to take place on Saturday 6th May 2023. Monday 8th May will be an additional Bank Holiday and the members of the Parish Council will be interested to hear of any events being planned. As always, contact the Clerk by email at

A team from Year 4 went to Bosworth Academy to take part in the Bosworth district Year 3/4 Dodgeball tournament. The team pictured above performed fantastically well, applying the skills and tactics they had learned in PE lessons, to win the majority of their games. After a tense play-off, the team News from Barlestone Primary School reached the semi final and then the final. The final ended in After their brilliant performances before Christmas saw a tie and so it went to sudden death, in which Barlestone just them qualify, the Year 6 Basketball team (pictured above) came up short. Botcheston W.I. We hope that the New Year has started well for you all and that you have weathered the cold weather. As I write, we have just had our January meeting that was unfortunately cut short! We had a visit from the watch at Market Bosworth Fire Station – 3 very nice guys came to talk to us about fire safety in the home and regale us with anecdotes of life as a fulltime and retained fire fighter. From stories of a cat (who turned out to be a squirrel!) stuck up a tree to statistics – only 20% of their call outs are to fires, this being down to the smoke alarm (that should be tested weekly). Unfortunately half way through the evening they got a call and had to depart, promising to come back another time.

Our next meeting is on Thursday 23 February when we will be having a talk on the Life and Times of Agatha Christie – the competition is entitled ‘An Old Book’. Our Craft and Coffee mornings in February are on the 6th and 20th at Botcheston Village Hall starting at 10am and winding up at 12noon. Bring along your knitting, embroidery or whatever you partake in, or just come along for a chat – a very informal morning – Knit and Natter! If you would like more information about Botcheston WI, or WI in general please contact our secretary on 01455 821228.
Newbold Verdon W.I. The first meeting of 2023 was held on Monday 9th January and our speaker Mr John Whitehead gave a very interesting and informative talk entitled “Mad as a Hatter”. He was talking about the making of hats from as far back as from Ancient Egypt to the modern day. In between those times we learned that early on it was only men who wore hats (women wore wimples or veils). It became
law that everyone had to wear a hat on Sundays and Religious Days. Many hats had required beaver fur which required a process which caused men to go mad as they used several poisonous chemicals to treat the fur before it was made into hats. During the 17th and 18th centuries ladies’ hats became ornate with stuffed birds and floral arrangements on the hat and men’s hats had grown very tall and were called stovepipe hats. Eventually, hats became more manageable and the town of Atherstone became a centre for milliners with some 30 factories making hats. Today there are very few. It was a very enjoyable talk and we all learned a great deal about both hats and Atherstone. The next meeting will be on 13th February at 7.30pm in the Methodist Church Hall when we will hear about The People of Bradgate Park. New members always welcome.
Ross Hills County Councillor
I hope everyone has had a positive start to 2023 and the January blues haven’t hit too hard. Below is a summary of some of the issues I’ve been working on - if you are interested in something specific or have an issue of course please get in touch. The 159 Bus Service Following on from the previous announcement of the termination of the 159 service from the end of February I would like to thank the 100+ local residents who have taken the time to give detailed responses in my ‘Save the 159 service’ survey. This has painted a picture of how residents want to use the service and I’m hopeful it will be attractive to operators in incentivising them to relaunch the service. One key strand from the survey has been work and school journeys which seem to
You will be aware that planning applications are under the remit of Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, however that LCC acts as a Highways consultee. After being able to relay resident’s highways concerns in the above applications, I am delighted to see Highways in LCC negatively comment on the above applications. For the Newbold Heath application they believe that the impact on road network would be too severe as it would create a new access to the B road with excessive speeds where turning manoeuvres could lead to accidents. Whilst in the Kirby Mallory application they have outlined that currently they have concerns over access widths, speeds on Barwell Road, proposals to move the speed limit as well as impacts on a footpath. Please note, this does leave the developer the opportunity of revising its application before resubmission and reconsideration. As always, if there are any issues you want assistance with, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. With best wishes, Ross Hills County Councillor for Mallory E –
[email protected] 45 Bagworth Rd, Newbold Heath and M – 07805339791 Land East of Barwell Road, Kirkby F facebook.com/councillorrosshills Mallory planning applications be regularly at capacity. To that end, as a start, I have written to LCC and local bus operators to implore them to keep a peak service running as a minimum. I also appreciate however that the clock is ticking. I have further written to the transport team within LCC asking them to explicitly outline what options will be available to residents if the bus route does cease. King Charles III Coronation It has been announced there will be an additional bank holiday on Monday 8th May to allow us to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles on the Saturday. I am pleased to see that, similar to Queen Elizabeth II’s jubilee last summer, LCC have taken steps to make it as easy as possible for residents to suitably commemorate the event. This includes waiving fees for road closures, cutting the deadline for any such applications to 5 weeks, free lending of cones/signs and the simplification of risk assessments required. It was lovely to attend many Jubilee events last summer and see the community come together, if you are planning to host an event again please get in touch.

Dr Luke Evans Your Local MP It’s never fun to deliver bad news, but as a GP I was always open with my patients, and don’t see any reason why that should change now I am your Member of Parliament. To that end, I wanted to use my column this month to provide you with an update on something which I know is of concern to many people across much of our community. You may have heard that Roberts will cease service of the 159 bus from Hinckley to Coalville from February 25th due to a decline in passengers since the pandemic. Bus services are under the domain of Leicestershire County Council and they have been subsidising this service, and
County Councillor Peter Bedford’s Update
others, at considerable cost as we all know how vital a bus can be for those in rural areas like ours. Following news of the 159 I wrote to Roberts, who provided the following as part of their response: “We have worked closely with the Council over the last six months, looking at ways that the 159 bus service could continue. Unfortunately, due to low passenger numbers and no [further] financial subsidy available from the Council, as a business, the route is no longer financially viable for us.” What I can do as your MP is raise bus provisions with relevant ministers and discuss funding for national strategies and schemes. I’ve written to the Local Transport Minister and Leader of the County Council to raise concerns around bus provisions for our area and see how Leicestershire can secure funding for a Bus Service Improvement Plan. I am also working to see if there is a way to change other, pre-existing routes to see if they can fill in some of the demand and, for example, contacting local schools to work out their provision. I welcome news that Arriva, who also provide services across Hinckley and
Bosworth, are taking part in a £60 million scheme from the Government which caps single fares for most routes across the country at £2 until March 31st. As you may appreciate, local bus provisions are an ongoing issue and, while I have no statutory role in this area, I do have a voice and House of Commons paper. Both are powerful tools which enable me to continue to raise this both locally and down in Westminster. I also wanted to take this opportunity to keep you updated on something positive happening within our area. Before Christmas we secured £14 million for a Community Diagnostic Centre at Hinckley Hospital. This means capacity for an additional 125,000 tests, scans and checks – such as MRI and CT scans, blood tests and x-rays – right on our doorstep! Local NHS stakeholders have now started a 6 week public consultation period on plans for the CDC and other proposals for health services across our community. Have your say on these proposals – ahead of the deadline on March 8th – and find details of online meetings and drop-in events across our area via this link: www. HaveYourSayHinckley.co.uk
means that speculative applications such as this are likely to continue and indeed increase for some time to come. As a County Councillor I have no direct powers over planning matters, however I have written to HBBC expressing my concerns about this latest application; particular since it is not one of Desford’s ‘preferred sites’, and will likely have highways safety implications in the village.
