11 Xn-I-h-äv NSS ACTIVITIES FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2018-19 National Service Scheme is a programme aimed at personality development through social activities for the students. Our college has two units of N.S.S which are affiliated to Mahathma Gandhi University. N.S.S of our college was functionedunder the supervision of Programmeofficers Sri. Aravind R, Assistant professor , P G Department of Economics and Smt. Priya P N ,Assistant Professor , Department of Geology. Akshai P R, Ahina A (both from second year B com) , AminaNazar (second year B Sc Mathematics )and Renjith Siju (second year B Sc Geology) were student secretaries. The academic year 2018-19 was marked by hectic activities performed by our NSS unit. The formal inauguration of the NSS activities for thepresent academic yearand world Environment day celebrationwas held on June 5th .Principal Dr Mathew George inaugurated the NSS activities. As part ofthe world environment day observance, former Head of the Department of Botany Prof. Valsalakumar planted a sapling of frankincense in our college campus, later our volunteers planted a number of tree saplings inside the campus on thesame day. We observed Yoga Day on June 21st. The programmewas inaugurated by Dr. R Pragash ,Syndicate Member of Mahathma Gandhi University. Trained volunteers demonstrated various yoga posturesand explained their processes and results. Other volunteers followed and practiced it . The programme was conducted in collaboration with NCC unit of our college.Volunteer secretary Akshai P Rmade a talk on ‘Importance ofYoga in our daily life’ . On July 20th SWACHTHAKI SEWA, a campus cleaning programme was conducted .Most of the volunteers participated in the programme sincerely. Hiroshima Day was observed on 6th August by conductinga poster making competition and it was formerly inaugurated by our Principal Dr. Mathew George . Cash prizes for 1st , 2nd and 3rdwere distributed by Prof. K Ramachandran Nair,H.O.D. of Physical EducationDepartment. On August 15thwe observed Independence Day witha debate competition on the topic “ Freedom Of Expression” other than all official functions . It was moderated by ourvolunteer secretary Akshai P R. During the time ofthe historical devastating flood in our state, our college organized a Flood Relief camp from August 17th to August 24th to help the victims from the flood affected areas of Kottayam and Alappuzha Districts. A total of 817 persons registered and out of this, 693 persons including 56 children camped in our college. Our volunteers done a great job for the functioning and successful completion of the camp. Our NSS unithas taken partRebuild Kerala Surveyof Kottayam municipality fromSeptember 15thto 17thinflood affected wards of Kottayam Municipality . The second phase survey was conducted from September 21stand 22nd . Hundred (100) volunteers of our collegehad participated the programme. On September 24, we observed NSS Day with various activities . Our Principal Dr. Mathew George inaugurated the programme. On September 27, World Tourism Day, our volunteers participated in a one day campon Tourism organized by Kottayam District Tourism Promotion Council. On October 2nd Gandhi Jayanti day, we conductedtwo cleaning programmes, one atPublic Health Centre, Nattakom. and the other at our collegecampus. The work was very tough and it ended at 4 pm. On oct 22nd We participated in the voters ID registration programme in support of election commission. Our volunteers Akshai P R, Ahina A and Jinu Mary Varghese participated in theworkshop regarding voters ID registration procedure conducted by Revenue Department . Later, these volunteers conducted a massvoters IDregistration programmein our college. On october 26thour volunteer secretaries Akshai P R, Ahina A, Renjith Siju and Amina Nazarparticipated a meeting for the formation of Kerala Voluntary Youth Action Force conducted by Kerala Youth Welfare Board at Sathyagraha hall Vaikom Municipality.

12 Xn-I-h-äv On october 31st , our volunteers participated in a mass cleaning programmecalled “Green Carpet” of the Kottayam District Tourism Promotion Council at Kodimatha Park. On the same day our unitconducted an awareness class in our college about the ‘necessity of election enrollment and how to registervoters ID card’in collaboration with Kerala Youth Welfare Board . There afterour unit organized an ‘election id card campaign andonline voters registration’ in our campusfrom 1st to 15th November. On November 19 our volunteers participated a workshop on “ Zero Budget Natural Farming- New Challenges” at MG University campus . Padmasree Subhash Palekkar was the chief speaker. On November 20, National Integration Day was observed inour unit byconductinga Quiz competition for the students in our college . Twelve teams were participated in the event . The team ofSreelekshmi and Rahul of the Political Science Department was the winners and Sourav Babu and Rahul of the Botany Department was the runner up On 24th and 25th Nov orientation camp for the new volunteers were held. On November 26 we observed Constitution Day with a special programme on Indian constitution. We conducted two Constitution awareness classes for the students and teachers inour college. Prof. Chandran Komath and Dr. Manoj Kumar were the resource persons for the programme. On 1stDecember 2018World Aids Day was observed. Weorganised a rally at Nattakomfor speaking out the threat of AIDS in our society. A Pre-Camp Orientation program was organized at our college on December 20th for the newly enrolled campers. Seven Days specialcamp “SUKRITHAM 2018” was held from December 21 to 27 at Govt. Vocational Higher Secondary School, Mariappally and our College.Reconstruction of aflood devastated roadin 42nd ward of Kottayam Muncipality was the major project in our special camp. Other than themain project educational classes, Yoga classes, Environmental awareness programs were also conducted. On 14th January, as part of the Republic day celebration, Shourya Chakra Colonel Manoj M P, an alumnus of our college hadvisited our unit and shared his experiences as an army officerwith the volunteers On January 19 :-Or NSS team Participated in District Youth Parliament selection process. Akshai PR,Midhun K Gopakumar,Naveena Bedsy Anand,Anjali K Abhikumar were selected On January 26th, Republic Day was observed in our college under the leadership of NCC and NSS. NCC officer Captain K Ramachandran Nair hoisted the National flag, ANO of Naval wing Mr. CD Cherian and Program Officer Mr Aravind Raddressed the gathering. On February 2nd our NSS volunteers participated “ VITHA MAHOLSAVAM” a sowing programme organized by ‘Krishi Bhavan’ Kottayam and Kottayam Municipality in the paddy fields of KodimathaMuppayikkad-Poozhikkunnu. The programme was inaugurated by our Hon. Agricultural Minister Mr. Sunil Kumar. We observed International Women’s Day on March 8thby organizing a Blood donation camp at our college auditorium with the help of Blood Bank, Medical College Kottayam. A total of 43 persons including students, teachers and nonteaching staff were participated in the blood donation camp. On march 14th we visited an anganavadiat Muttam, Nattakom and distributedcollected toys and books to the kids. Most of the volunteers were participated in the programme. This was the last programme in this academic year. In this academic year our NSS unit observed all national days,celebrated mostfestivals , arranged cleaning campaigns and Voters ID registration campaign,participated Rebuild Kerala Survey, conducted Flood relief camp and Blood donation campetc.. Unity in Diversity Mita seated herself comfortably on her chair.She looked at the audience and took a deep bbreath. This day was going to determine her future as an author, as it was her first creation. She opened the book, took the first page, cleared her throat and started reading. The story was about her reminiscence - about those days when humanity was tested by nature. It was a friday evening when Mita was returning home from college. There was a smile of relief on her face. She was tall, fair skinned girl and was the younger one of her siblings, the queen of the house. When she reached home there was a complete commotion. She wondered what is happening . She looked at the news and walked into her room and proceeded to her usual doings. After sometime she heard her mother making too much calls and so asked her second brother Hari what was going on.He replied that heavy rain are reported in many districts and mom was worried about her elder son wholivedin Trivandrum,one among the districts in red zone. Heavy rains continued throughout the day and the next she woke up hearing the news that was opened. She didnot understand what was there in that to make so much fuss, until the next day. Near her house lived an old couple. They were upper caste and so was Mita’s family. But unlike them the old man despised the lower caste and always ridiculed them whenever he got a chance. His name was Ram and his faithful wife Kamala, although not very fond of her husband’s attitude, remained silent. Mita hated Ram uncle. When one of her friend visited her house, Ram uncle asked Mita her friend’s caste and when realized that she belonged to lower caste, he turned his head away. Mita knew that it really hurt her friend and from thence she disliked that old man.Even though her parents respected him she knew that they too disagreed with his principles. Hari was once told that Ram uncle was so obsessed with racist believes that he wouldn’t even go to Pratap’s hotel as he belonged to a lower caste. A week after the opening of dam , she woke up to see that their house was surrounded by water. Her parents knew what they should do and shifted to the second floor. Since Ram uncle and her wife was alone there her father went to call them to his house. Days passed and they found that the stored food was running out and the water level continued to climb up.Hari put a live in facebook appealing for help andthat elders were with them.This was the condition of the entire area. But thanks to social media, boats began to come the next day to rescue people. A boat neared their house with two black skinned people sitting on it. They helped each member to enter the boat. When it was Ram uncle’s turn he asked them “Are you a Mukkuvan(a fishermen)?”. The men was surprised to hear such a question. He replied “Does it matter?” and Ram uncle’s reply was scandalous “Yes it does”. Mita couldn’t control herself but her father forbade herspeak and tried to console him. Uncle felt taken back. He remained silent and was forced by Mita’s father to enter the boat. Ram uncle was silent for a long time. Mita understood that he was thinking about something deeply, maybe his disgusting attitude towards them. A camp had been alreadyset up at the LP school where their boat turned up.Everyone except Ram uncle left the boat. He said something to the men on the boat. Though Mita didn’t hear it she understood that it was something pleasant as it made smile on the trios face. After eating food and changing her clothes Mita decided to go with her brother to see if they can be of any help. To their surprise they saw Ram uncle helping people to leave the boat. There were dark skinned people too but it seemed that Ram uncle wasn’t bothered by that. He saw them looking at him in awe, but he just smiled back at them. Attheend of the day she saw Ram uncle happily serving food to all.After the meal he came to her and said that she should tell her friend thathe was sorry to embarass her by asking her caste and that he would be happy if she visits his home sometime soon. Mitacouldn’t believe her ears, though she know it wasn’t a dream. It took weeks but the water level decreased. But during those desperate times she saw people caring each other without asking their caste or social status. She understood that though the flood destroyed many peoples dreams, it offered a chance to people like Ram to change and many did so. THREE CATS Karthika Ajimon 1st BSc Mathematics Three cats lived in neighbouring houses. They were close friends and used to meet to discuss matters of common interest. One of them was white in colour. Another one was black. The third was brown. One day the black cat argued that his colour was the best as he could hide in dimlight and pounce on the prey without getting noticed. He added that the white colour of his friend was a terrible disadvantage in catching a prey in dimlight. The white cat retorted that white was a superior colour as it was a combination of all colours and a symbol of purity. He added that black was the absence of any colour. When the argument became uncontrollable, the brown cat intervened. He said, “ I will tell a story. Listen carefully and then decide which is the better colour “. He narrated a novel story. “Before the creation of cats, God made models of cats by using clay. Then he put them one by one in fire to strengthen and harden them before instilling life to them. When he introduced the first model in the furnace , he had no idea about the optimum time for hardening. He kept it for a long time and it got charred and over burnt. That was how the first ‘black cat’ was created. The next time, God was very cautious to avoid overheating. So he removed the model from thefurnace a bit early to avoid overheating. The model was under burnt and white in colour. The white cats descended from him. God become proficient in the art and science of hardening the models. So the third experiment was successful and the model was removed after correct heating. It was perfect and had a beautiful brown colour. All brown cats including me are his descendants. We were heated and hardened correctly for the optimum time and temperature. Now you know who is the result of the perfect creation.” The story amused the black and white cats though they know it was fictitious. They stopped their fights and became friends again realizing that external appearance is insignificant. Man has fought thoughtlessly, throughout human history arguing about the superiority of one race over the other. Men may differ in characteristics and qualities such as calibre, caste , character, charm, cognition, colour, community, costume, complexion, courage, creed, culture and customs.
