FIRST THINGS FIRST... CONGRATS ON TAKING YOUR FIRST STEP TO A LOW(ER) TOX LIFE! Hi, I’m Wendy - an environmental toxins lawyer turned clean living coach and my passion is helping families learn how to ditch the toxins, without the overwhelm. I want you to hear this... stress & anxiety are master toxins and if you are overly stressed or afraid about the toxins in your life, that isn't good for your health either. So, take a deep breath. The 5 things I am going to share here with you will clean up more than 50% of the toxins in your life and that is HUGE! After that, if you want to keep tossing more toxins.. great! You've got access to everything you need. But, this roadmap alone will go a long way in reducing your toxic load. My goal was to make this so simple (and fun!) for you that you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner!

SWAP YOUR FRAGRANCE Take inventory of how much fragrance is in your home. Start with room sprays, glade plug ins, wax melts and any fragranced candles.

TOSS THEM OUT

YOU HAVE OPTIONS

I know.. this is going to hurt! I normally don't advocate to throw things away. I always suggest that you finish the products you have on hand and then when it runs out, replace it with a non-toxic version. But, this is the exception. Those scents are wreaking havoc on your hormones and your health. They really do have to go.

Everything you just tossed can be replaced with a diffuser and a couple quality essential oils and there are so many safe fragrance companies out there making amazing perfume too! Want some fully fetted options for toxin free candles and clean perfume? Check out the Safe Fragrance section of my Toxin Free Shopping Guide.

GREEN YOUR CLEAN What you clean your home with and what you do your laundry with are (along with fragrance), the largest contributors to hormone disrupting toxins in your home. That's good news! That means that swapping those 3 things out will make a huge impact on your health.

STOP WASTING MONEY

DRYER SHEETS

When you purchase household cleaners at the store, you are buying 10% cleaner (mostly toxic) and 90% WATER. The majority of the cost goes to the plastic spray bottle and the water they add. What a waste! Using a toxin free cleaner concentrate and getting a few glass spray bottles will save you loads of money and keep your home safe and clean.

Do you know how dryer sheets work? They are full of toxins called Quats that melt fragrance and other chemicals in the dryer and coat your clothing in it. Fabric softeners aren't making your clothes soft, they are coating them in toxins that are flexible and makes a slimy film on top that feels soft. So where do you start? Shop my favorite Toxin Free Laundry brands.

REPLACE DEODERANT You wear deodorant every day (well, most people do) and your pits are one of your most important detox pathways. Also... people generally like to smell good!

ALUMINUM

THE SKINNY

Who decided to put aluminum in deodorant anyway? It seems like such a terrible idea, it actually clogs your pores to block sweat. The toxic aluminum aside, your pits are one of your detox pathways. If you body can't detox, then all that junk is getting clogged up in your body. Not a good thing...

Natural deodorants have come a LONG way since hippies were wearing patchouli. They smell great thanks to essential oils, they work well at keeping you fresh and they are super convenient. You've got no reason to make this swap, ASAP. You can see some great toxin free options here or just grab Primally Pure which is my hands down favorite. CODE WENDYKATHRYN TO SAVE 10%

FILTER DRINKING WATER I can't stress this enough. You drink water all day and MOST tap water in the U.S. is contaminated with thousands of chemicals that aren't even regulated.

DRINKING WATER

SIMPLE SOLUTIONS

Under the Safe Water Drinking Act, only 91 toxins are regulated and there are about 20k out there. Pesticides, fluoride, chlorine, hormone disruptors, antibiotics, heavy metals and so much more. Even the regulated toxins are present at levels that are harmful for your health. Go look up what's in your tap water using EWGs Tap Water Data Base.

OK, so now that you know what's actually in your water, you are going to want to invest in a water filter for your home. Need to start small? Grab a Clearly Filtered Pitcher while you are researching which filter is best for you. You can find all of my fully vetted water filters on my toxin free shopping guide, here.

The Best Ways to Filter Your Water

Are There Toxins in Your Tap Water?

INDOOR AIR QUALITY Your cleaning supplies contribute to poor indoor air quality, but so does dust particles, dirt brought in from outside, your outdoor air quality, flame retardants from furniture and carpet and more.

HEPA air filters in your home may be something you want to consider if you live in a city, an area with particularly high air pollution or you have multiple sources of chemical exposure in your home. While Air Doctor is a popular brand (and what I have in my home), multiple new brands have come to the market that are high quality and more cost effective. Medify would currently be my top choice CODE WENDY15 FOR 15% OFF

The good news about your indoor air quality is that there are so many things you can do to improve it. Opening the windows in your home for at least 15 minutes a day (yes, even in the winter), not wearing shoes in your house, vacuuming often (bonus points If your vacuum has a HEPA filter) and wet dusting a few times a week make a big difference.

CLEAN AIR FOR FREE

TOXIN FREE (ISH)

I love this podcast episode because it's important for me to tell you that there is no such thing as 100% toxin free and you shouldn't strive for that. Don't be scared or fearful or go overboard in pursuit to ditch toxins. Listen to how I find an 80/20 balance and live low tox without stressing out.

INVENTORY PRODUCTS You finished the top 5.. now what?! This is the fun part. On the next page you'll find a checklist with all the areas of your life that could use a non-toxic makeover.

PICK A ROOM

SLOWLY SWAP

Go down the list from top to bottom. Choose one area of your life and when you run out of those products, replace them with cleaner, less toxic versions. Start with the products that will make the biggest impact for you. Never wear makeup? Then maybe that's the last swap. Everyone's priorities will look different.

This is important. New habits take time and get adopted slowly. Don't try and throw out everything in your house and buy all new stuff. Does the thought of reading labels stress you out? I have a Toxin Free Shopping Guide that you can shop from full of only the cleanest brands.
