IATA: Aug Air Traffic Ends On A High Air traffic is now at 73.7% of pre-pandemic levels, shows the latest data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Aug signalled the end of the busy northern summer period and momentum continued to grow with total traffic, up 67.7% on Aug 2021, says IATA, measured in revenue passenger kilometres Domestic traffic was up 26.5% yearon-year to 85.4% of Aug 2019 levels;

More Schiphol Cuts

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is again reducing the number of local departing passengers in the coming period, citing the current labour market shortage and the need to provide travellers predictability and airline’s stability. The airport currently expects the cap to be in place until the end of Mar. “Keeping to a maximum number of travellers is vital,” says Hanen Buis, coo at Royal Schiphol Group.“We want to ensure the safety of employees and travellers, in addition to providing a more reliable airport process.” Buis says AMS is working hard on making structural improvements, but in a very tight labour market, he says it’s something to be realistic about. “That’s why it will only become clear later this year whether more [capacity] is possible after Jan.”

whilst international traffic more than doubled the Aug 2021 figures, up 115.6% year-on-year or to 67.4% of 2019 levels. This is good progress, says IATA director general Willie Walsh, considering the prevailing economic uncertainties. Asia-Pacific airlines led recovery, with IATA data showing a 449.2% rise for Aug, year-on-year. Capacity rose 167% and the load factor was up 40.1 percentage points to 78.0%. Walsh says the removal or easing of travel restrictions at some key Asian destinations, including Japan, will accelerate the recovery in Asia. “The mainland of China is the last major market retaining severe C-19 entry restrictions.” Elsewhere in the world, Middle Eastern airlines’ traffic rose 144.9%, while American carriers saw a 110.4% traffic rise in Aug, and Latin American airlines’ a 102.5% rise. Still climbing, albeit at smaller levels were European carriers, with Aug traffic up 78.8% versus Aug 2021, and African airlines, which experienced a 69.5% rise.

. . . Cargo

Global cargo demand fell 8.3% compared to Aug 2021, a slight improvement on the year-on-year decline of 9.7% seen in Jul, while capacity was 6.3% above Aug 2021, a significant expansion over the 3.6% year-onyear increase in Jul.

BDM’s Get Moving

The future of flight is automated, says Boeing, which has released a roadmap to a future where automated and uncrewed aircraft safely carrying passengers and cargo in urban and suburban areas. Created with joint venture partner Wisk, which has been working on the first all-electric self-flying air taxi in the US, the roadmap lays out the technology, regulatory and social recommendations needed to deploy Urban Air Mobility (UAM) in the US, and integrate it into the national airspace system. Wisk ceo Gary Gysin says the roadmap provides a ‘stepping stone’ in the advancement of UAM. “The vision we have outlined is the result of many years of collaboration with Boeing,

Kyle Mabry is American Airline’s new vp of operations and commercial for EMEA and APAC, as the airline counts down to the launch of its Auckland-Dallas Fort Worth services from 01 Nov. Malbr y has more than 25 years experience at AA across commercial, marketing and business strategy roles, most recently as vp global sales. In his new position he’s charged with guiding the teams to fulfil American’s commercial strategy. “After over two decades with AA, I’m looking forward to the taking-on the challenge of the EMEA and APAC regions, leading our dedicated teams across the globe as we run a reliable operation and to return to profitability” says Mabry. “I’ve witnessed the incredible work that our teams at EMEA and APAC do, ensuring American’s continued success in the region, and I look forward to work alongside them as we continue providing unparalleled service for customers.” Mabry’s appointment comes ahead of AA resuming service to AKL and Sydney which it says will help to further rebuild AA’s footprint in the Pacific.

the FAA, NASA and key industry stakeholders,” he says. “As a result, this document offers the most comprehensive framework proposed to date with a vision for enabling UAM in the national airspace.”

. . . The Plan

Boeing and Wisk’s goals include making urban air mobility safe and affordable for everyone. Current plans would see the aircraft fly day or night under visual or instrument flight rules, and be supported by automated onboard and groundbased systems, reducing the load on air traffic controllers and pilots. The duo also highlight the need to create new infrastructure such as ‘vertiports,’ locations where UAM aircraft can take off and land, load and unload passengers, and receive services. While the aircraft will be automated, Boeing and Wisk recommend the creation of ‘fleet operations centres’ where multi-vehicle supervisors can monitor flights, implement air traffic control instructions to maintain aircraft separation, and ensure safe operation of the flight. Brian Yutko, Boeing’s vp and chief engineer of sustainability and future mobility says it is working to enable a future of aerospace that is ‘safe, sustainable and at scale’. “Uncrewed operations will be fundamental to realising that vision, and we have to exceed the current safety standards for the air transportation system,” he says. South Korea has now removed the on-arrival PCR testing requirement for inbound travellers, effective immediately, advises the Korea Tourism Organization.

In an effort to stop overseas visitors throwing away boogie boards, snorkelling gear and other beach toys that don’t fit in their suitcases, Visit Maui has listed alternative ways tourists can dispose of these items. First up is donations, with clients able to drop boogie boards and more off at Goodwill, Salvation Army or Boys & Girls Club of Maui. Visit Maui also recommends Kiwi visitors find a local resident who can repurpose these items for family and friends, or urges clients to check with their accommodations to see if they’re able to find a home for the unwanted items, in a bid to cut waste.
