. The 27th annual International Hispanic Theatre Festival launches in mid-July, with this year's focus a tribute to Latino theater in the United States. First up is a production of Miguel Pinero's gritty Short Eyes, a play performed in l . English by the Urban Theatre Movement of Los Angeles. ~ kicks off the festival at 8:30 p.m. July 12-13 in the Carnival Studio Theater at Miami's Arsht Center for the Performi ng Arts, one of two key festival venues.

At 8:30 p.m. July 13-14, Prometeo Theatre will perform Marco Antonio de la Parra's Infieles Mario Ernesto Sanchez heads the XXVII International Hispanic Theatre Festival, which will pay tribute to Latino (Unfaithful), a play about being unfaithful theater in the United States. personally and politically. That show will be presented in the auditorium at Miami Dade College's Wolfson Campus. The Latino Theater Company of Los Angeles is also bringing a play in English, Evelina Fernandez's Solitude, a work inspired by Octavio Paz's The Labyrinth of Solitude. The play will be done at the Carnival Studio Theater at 8:30 p.m. July 14 and ,5 p.m. July 15. Subsequent festival offerings are Santiago Loza's Nada del amor me produce envidia (Nothing About Love Produces Envy) from Flor de un Dia of Buenos Aires (in Spanish at 8:30 p.m. July 18­ 19 in the Prometeo Theatre at MDC's Wolfson Campus); Juliana Faesler's Malinche/Malinches by Mexico City's La Maquina de Teatro (in Spanish at 8:30 p.m. July 19-20 at the Carnival Studio Theater); Diana Chery-Ramirez's Aviones de papel (Paper Airplanes) by New York's Teatro Zero (in Spanish at 8:30 p.m. July 20-21 at Prometeo Theatre); and Oscar Martinez's Ella en mi cabeza (She's On My Mind) by Arte & Friends from Bogota (in Spanish at 8:30 p.m. July 21,5 p.m. July 22 at the Carnival Studio Theater. Two programs aimed at families are also part of the festival. At 5:45 p.m. July 21 at the Key Biscayne Community Center, New York's Teatro Sea will present the free bilingual EI encuentro de Juan Bobo y Pedro Animal (The Encounter of Juan Bobo and Pedro Animal) by Manuel Antonio Moran. The festival's free annual International Children's Day runs from 2 to 7 p.m. July 22 at Miami Dade College's InterAmerican Campus. The bilingual programming includes a 3 p.m. performance of Cristina Ferrari's Yo la llama Rusita Rojas (I Call Her Rusita Rojas) by Miami's Teatro Doble and a 6 p.m. performance of EI Encuentro de Juan Bobo y Pedro Animal. Miami Dade College's (MOC) Art Gallery System and MOC Live! Performing Arts Series, in collaboration with Oiaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator, present MILAGROS: Portal Culture, an intensive community arts project, performance and exhibition. The project will run from June 26 through July 27 at MOC 's Freedom Tower in downtown Miami. All events are free and open to the public.

Florida-based MILAGROS Project will set up an interactive visual, musical and performance art project at MOe 's Freedom Tower.

There will be an opening reception on Thursday, June 28, at 6 p.m., with a performance by musicians from Elestial Sounds Records at 7 p.m. An Artist's Lecture & Presentation will be held on Friday, June 29 , at 1 p.m.

MILAGROS Project is a Florida-based artist collective, including Felici Asteinza, Alvin Filiastre, Evan Galbicka, and Elestial Sounds, who construct site-specific installations that integrate visual, performance, music, and participatory arts . For the visual component, they will begin building an installation at the Freedom Tower on June 26, and will remain on display through July 27. The artists will be in residence the week of June 25 to begin building the installation and presenting community workshops on June 26. Visitors are welcomed to drop in as the installation is being built during gallery hours. Myles Smith, who was a senior on Divine Child's 2010 Division 2 state championship team, was selected as a pitcher by the New York Mets in the 16th round of last week's Major League Baseball Draft. Smith went 8-2 with a 2.78 earned run a\€rage for the Miami Dade College Sharks this season and earned Second Team All-Conference honors. lack Fields, who just graduated from Annapolis, went to the American League champion Texas Rangers in the 38th round. Fields, a first baseman, set school scoring records on the basketball court and also provided the big bat when the Cougars advanced to the Division 2 quarterfinals for the first time e\€r last spring.

"With pick # 359 in round 12 of the 2010 MLB Draft the Kansas City Royals select Daniel Hernandez, Right Handed Pitcher, Miami Dade College." If Danny Hernandez was listening to the draft online early Tuesday afternoon, that is more than likely the sentence that he and his family heard, right before they erupted into a swell of smiles, cheers, hugs , kisses , and maybe a few tears from Grammy . .. At least I hope that's what happened for the 21 year old righty from Miami. Standing 6'2" and weighing in at 179 pounds , Daniel "Danny" Hernandez, hails from the baseball hotbed of Dade County, Florida. Hernandez attended Coral Gables High School (notable alumni include Mike Lowell and Yonder Alonso) and in 2007 he garnered AII­ Dade County 6A 5A Honorable Mention as a Pitcher. Along with Hernandez the class included All-Dade County 1st Team Catcher, the on again, off again , on again , and finally off again Royals potential 1st Round pick Yasmani Grandal from Miami Springs High . (Halleluiah , it was Christian Colon!!)

This year Hernandez pitched for Miami Dade College putting together an impressive 9-0 record with a 1.37 ERA, while recording 72 strikeouts to only 22 walks over 65.2 innings. This striking stat line earned him 1st Team all All-Southern Conference Honors. He also earned a scholarship offer from Florida International University, although I doubt that his commitment will stand now that the Royals have acquired his services.

Speaking of his services, it is reported he has a live fast ball that sit between 90-93 with some secondary pitches he is still refining. Right now Hernandez projects as a 4th or 5th starter, but with his frame, he could add a few pounds and a few ticks to his fastball, and could possibly be a 2nd or 3rd starter. A 2nd or 3rd Starter in the 12th round would be all right with me!

"Our Instituto Coreografico works to foster new voices and explore the diversity of Lati no culture. This year's gifted choreographers bring unique perspectives to the institute and will collaborate with our talented dancers to discover new paths of investigation for their work," said Eduardo Vilaro, Artistic Director of Ballet Hlspanico . In 2010, Ballet Hispanico launched a new choreography institute created fo r Latino artists to explore culturally speCific work in a nurturing, learning laboratory. The inaugural Instituto Coreografico took place in Septembe r 2010 when Cuban-American choreographer Maray Ramis Gutierrez created a new work, Puntos SuspenSivos, on company members which then premiered two months later during Ballet Hispanico's annual New York season at The Joyce Theater. The Instituto cont inued in January 2011 when former Ballet Hispanico dancer Nich olas Villeneuve cneated a new work on his fellow company members. The most recent installment of the program in June 2011 featured Cuban choreographer George Cespedes, a dancer with Danza Contemporanea de Cuba, who is among the few Cuban nationals to create a work for a major u.s. dance company.

Rosie Herrera is a g raduate of Miami's New World School of the Arts with a BFA in Dance Performance . She has been commissioned by The Miami Light Project, in association with the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing and the American Dance Festival. As a rehearsal director, co-choreographer and performer, Rosie was in residency at the Chat Noir Cabaret at Dream Night Club in Miami Beach with the interdisciplinary performance ensemble Circ X. In 2009 she was in residency at the American Dance Festival recneating her work "Various Stages of Drowning: A Cabaret" on ADF dancers. Subsequently her company was presented at the festival in 2010 and 2011 where she premiered the ADF commissioned works: "Pity Party" and "Dining Alone" to sold out audiences. Rosie is a classically trained lyric coloratura soprano and performs with the Performers Music Institute Opera Ensemble as well as choreographs and stages operas independently throughout Miami. She hilS also collaborated on productions with The South Miami Dade Cultural Arts Center, New World School of the Arts, Zoetic Stage and with theater artist Rudi Goblen as well as

filmmakers Adam Reign and Lucas Ley va. Rosie is a 2010 MANCC choreographic fellow and a 2011 Miami Dance Fellow . Abdul Latif graduated from Wesleyan University, double majoring in Theater and the College of Social Studies, with a minor in Dance. He received his Master's Degree from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts with a concentration in choreography and direction. Abdul has choreographed for platinum recording ilrtists The Beanuts, Cynthia Torres and Deborah Cox. He was a member of Donald Byrd's contemporary ballet company The Group and Je nnifer Muller's contemporary modern company The Works. He performed in Broadway productions The Lio n King and Hairspray and was featured in the films The Royal Tenenbaums and Across the Universe. Abdul choreographed the Lincoln Center production Building : A Popera and many other high-profile eve nts, including the 20th Anniversary Bonnet, Gypsy of the Year, Broadway Bares and the 2009 St Jude Foundation Gala. He has been an Architect of the Future Grant Nominee , a Robert Wilson - Watermill Foundation Semi­ Finalist and, with the support of the Lincoln Center Institute and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund , is working toward his solo premiere, D2Dancin'. He travels the world to teach DulieDancin', his Urban Contemporary Mo vement workshops, and continues to build his production companies &1 Entertainment and D2Inc.

Con unas palabras de recordaci6n para su madre, que 10 erio hablando espanal, Eduardo Padron, presidente del Miami Dade College, dio inici o anoche al coloquio " EI futuro del idioma espana I» , celebrando el decimo ani ve rsario del Centro de Literatura y Teatro del MDC. «Las primeras palabras de arnor que recuerdo, las de mi madre, fuero n en espana]», dijo Padron . "Creo que es un don valioso seguir disfrutandolo como el primer dia. Fue el refugio de exiliados e inmigrantes durante mucho tiempo, y ahara forma parte del futuro de los Estado s Unidos en una ejemplar evolucion no experimentada par ninguna otra lengua que no sea el ingle s en este pais».

Las sesiones del colo quio continuaran todo el dia de hoy can la asistencia de importantes figur as de las letras, las artes y la diplomacia. Organizado par Alina Interian, directora ejecutiva del Centro de Literawra y Te at ro del MDC, ha ten ida la colaboracion de Leonor Esgue rra, directora de Asunt os Culturales de la Secretaria General Iberoamericana (SEGIB). La SEGIB presenta la exposicion fotogriifica «Gigantografias», que se mostrara dentro y fuera de la To rre de la Libertad hasta el 27 de junia, titulada «Ex presion iberoamericana: de la soledad a la solidaridad» . Interian dio la bienvenida declarando que «segu n datos del ultimo Cen so de 2010, en Estados Unidos se registra un acelerado cr ec imiento del idiom a esparlOl, particularmente en la Florid a, donde viven 4.2 millones de hispanos, que rep rese ntan al 22 % de la poblacion, 10 que refleja en la ultima decada un aumento de los hispanos de casi un 60 % en todo el estado». Esa es la razon de este coloquio, ex plica Interian, que se lIeva a cabo para investigar los posibles escenar ios del desarrollo de la lengu a espanola en esta y otras regiones.

La SEGIB les ha apoyado para crear un espacio de refle x io n, debate, di agnostico y proyeccion sobre las fortale zas y debilidades del idioma espanol. El Coloquio "El futuro del idioma espafiol", celebrado el 31 de mayo en Miami, fue inaugurado por el

alcalde de Miami, Tomas Regalado; el presidente del Miami Dade College (MDC), Eduardo Padron;

la directora de la Feria del Libro y del Centro de Literatura y Teatro del MDC, Alina Interian, y la

directora de Cultura de la Secretarfa General Iberoamericana, Leonor Esguerra Portocarrero.

Eduardo Padron se refiri6 al espafiol como la expresion de una cuItura fundacional que tambien ha tenido extraordinarios resultados economicos. "Es uno de los pilares de la economfa por el multimillonario poder adquisitivo de los hispanos y todo el mercado que sus industrias conlleva". Por su parte, el alcalde de Miami, Tomas Regalado, expreso que "Miami es un ejemplo de como el idioma espanol se abre paso en la sociedad estadounidense y comparte espacio con el ingles". Las sesiones del co!oquio se prolongaron durante toda la jornada del 31 de mayo con la asistencia de

importantes figuras de las letras, las artes y la diplomacia. EI coloquio fue organizado por el Miami

Dade College con l:1 colaboraci6n de la Division de Asuntos Culturales de la Secretaria General

Iberoamericana.

Asimismo, y dando marco a este encuentro, se present6 la exposlclon fotografica "Expresi6n Iberoamericana de la Soledad a la Solidaridad", que estara exhibida durante todo el mes de junio dentro y fu era de la TOlTe de la Libertad. Segun datos del {dtimo censo de 2010, en Estados Unidos se registra un acelerado crecimiento del idioma espai'iol, particub.rmente en la Florida, donde viven 4.2 millones de hispanos, el 22 % de la poblaci6n, 10 que refleja en la ultima decada un aumento del 60% la poblaci6n hispana en todo el estado. Investigar sobre los posibles escenarios de desarrollo de la lengua espafiola en Estados Unidos y en el ~undo, asi como sus impactos sociol~gicos y economicos, tien+,Ptena justificacion con estas clfras. viven en Estados Unidos, el pais con mas numero de habitantes que hablan espafiol despues de Mexico. La SEGIB ha brindado su apoyo para crear un espacio de reflexi6n y debate, con vocaClOn de continuidad. Tanto es asi que el MDC anuncio que el coloquio se repetini afio tras afio, el ultimo jueves de mayo. Durante su intervencion, la directora de la Divisi6n de Asuntos Culturales de la SEGIB, Leonor Esguerra, hab16 sobre la comunidad de valores y el acel'VO de una regi6n que comparte las dos lenguas francas adoptadas como oficiales por la Conferencia Iberoamericana. Se refiri6 a la Carta Cultural Iberoamericana, as! como a la construcci6n del Espacio Cultural Iberoamericano. Ademas, ilustr6 sobre el sistema de cooperacion, especialmente sobre los programas en el area cultural y sobre la participacion de la SEGIB en estudios y coloquios especializados tales como el del Valor Econ6mico del Espafiol (Fundacion Telef6nica), 0 el de los Tres Espacios Lingiiisticos (espanol, frances y portugues). Se refiri6 , tambien, a las conversaciones que adelanta el secretario general iberoamericano, Enrique V. Iglesias, con el Instituto Cervantes para llevar a la Cumbre de Cadiz un programa sobre la difusion y ensefianza del espafiol especialmente en Brasil y Estados Unidos. La representante de la SEGIB moder6 el seminario "Futuro del espafiol en relaci6n con las politicas publicas", en el que participaron expertos de Paraguay , Mexico, Espafia y El Salvador. Las mesa de deliberaci6n so bre el espafiol en la diplomacia mereci6 tambien especial atenci6n del publico. Sobre la muestra de la exposicion Esguerra subray6 que "las fotografias son producto del trabajo colectivo de decenns de fotografos; hablan con alegria de nuestras gentes y de sus gestas cotidianas. La mirad a de la exposici6n es muy grata, y su nombre, 'De la soledad a la solidaridad', surge del texto que la acompana, escrito por el ex vicepresidente de Colombia y hoy embajador en La Habana, Gustavo Bell. Esto es 10 que se busca en nuestro espacio iberoamericano: la cooperaci6n a traves de la accion" . Esta muestra viene del Festival Cervantino de Guanajuato y, despues de estar en Miami, viajara a Cadiz donde permanecera durante tres meses, hasta la XXII Cumbre Iberoamericana de Jefes de Estado y de Gobierno. Esguerra agradeci6 el apoyo de Arturo Morell qui en hizo po sible que la muestra llegara al MDC. El coloquio cerro con una magnifica conferencia sobre "El futuro del idioma espafiol en el mundo", dictada por Humberto Lopez Morales, secretario general de la Asociaci6n de Academias de la Lengua Espafiola. El espano! ha derrotado en EE. UU. al «English only» La vitalidad del espanol, despues del ingles la lengua de comunicacion internacional mas pujante en el mundo, ha tumbado en EE. UU. a las campanas del «English only», que buscan reducirlo a la categoda de idiom a extrano y ajeno, coincidieron hoy dos expertos en Miami.

Mas de 50 millones de hispanos y su poder adquisitivo han hecho de esta comunidad la primera minorla de EE.U U. (16 % del total) y convertido el «Eng lish only» (solo ingle s) en «papel mojado», dijo a Efe el puertorriquerio Humberto Lope z Morales, secretario general de la Asociacion de Academias de la Lengua Espanola .

Lopez Mor ales es uno de los conferenciantes que participan en el coloquio «EI futuro del idioma espanol», que tiene lugar hoy en la Torre de la Libertad de Miami para abordar asuntos como el efecto expansivo del idioma espanol 0 su futuro a traves de las politicas publica s. En opinion del academica, doctor honoris causa de varias universidades americanas y europeas, el espariol es hoy el mejor capital del que disponen las naciones hispanoamericanas. «Intentar frenar su presencia en EE.UU no tiene ningun fUlUrQ)),

En este sentido, expreso su convencimiento de que, «de todos los lugares del mundo, es precisamente en Estados Unidos donde el espanol tien e un futuro mas triunfal». can un a comunidad hispana que «ya no se averguenza de serlo como en otras epocas, sino todo 10 contrario)). Lopez Morales sostuvo que, aparte del factor demograFico, resulta decisivo el «p oder economico empresarial de los hispanos» y su presencia en la esfera academica . Pero si bien la comunidad hispana no ha a\canzado todavia su reconocimiento politico real en EE .UU, (da s cosas han cambiado a pasos agigantados» y ese reconocimienIo acabara por lIegar para una pobl ac ion que representa un papel clave en el presente y futuro de esta nacion . Tras alabar la funcion que desemperia ellnstituto Cervantes en la promoci6n del espanol en todo el mundo, Lopez Morales expres6 su deseo de que el organismo y la buena imagen que vende del idioma se vu elque mas en Estados Unidos, donde a su jUicio «tiene poca presencia)). En esa misma Ifnea, Eduardo J. Padron , rector de la universidad publica Miami Dade Colleg e, asegur6 a Efe que esta institucion fue desde su comienzo el mejor aliado de aquellos que se enfrentaron al disparale politico del «English Only» en el condado de Miami-Dade. «Baj o nue st ra sombrilla academica no existe el 'only', a no ser que sea el de la excelencia», resalt6 Padron, quien puso de relieve que la relacion del espanol con el ingles es «armonica, nada agresiva, totalmente reconciliable».

En cuanto a una posible actividad encaminada a mejorar la imagen del espanol entre lo s anglohablantes, L6pez Morales insistio en que, si bien parte de la poblacion anglosajona «siente temor y se ve des plazada del pais» por el cambio en el mapa cultural y econ6mico estadounidense, se trata de una percepcion de amenaza erronea. «No se por que tienen esa idea (c ontraria al espano l).
