Executive Summary

"Heroism doesn't always happen in a burst of glory. Sometimes small triumphs and large hearts change the course of history." – Mary Roach It was once declared by George Washington that “the willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive the Veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by their nation.” Over the last 13 years, approximately 2.4 million active and reserve members of the U.S. armed forces have left military service and returned to civilian life. In the next four to five years, another one million will make this transition. For a soldier, sailor, airman, or Marine who has served in a military at war for more than a decade, reintegrating into civilian life can be tough. Is America doing enough to ease this transition for those who have served and sacrificed so much on its behalf? While there have certainly been some important initiatives, the honest answer must be no. There is much more that can be done. Veterans looking to excel in life need to have a well-developed self-esteem, a good educational skillset, and resources to manage and seize opportunities. Often, if opportunities and life’s basic necessities are not available, they begin experience hardships that negatively impact achievement and overall life fulfillment. These hardships impact their emotional, social, and professional development, creating an environment conducive of negative outcomes. Fortunately, when Veterans are supported, have mentors, or can benefit from programs and services in place they have far greater success in achieving positive outcomes. Research purely shows that Veterans who have resources and opportunities have better and more predictable outcomes. Positive social 6

connections, mentors, and community and social services are reported to enhance the positive outcomes for all Veteran’s psychological well-being and physical health. Veteran Support Network Corporation is a Georgia-based 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides support and resources to uplift Veterans through the provision support, resources, and professional development. Veteran Support Network Corporation will strategically partner with social leaders, volunteers, social service agencies, Veteran support organizations, and businesses to provide its charitable works and facilitate its programs and services to Veterans in need of support. Veteran Support Network Corporation believes that as an organization, it can eradicate poverty and the negative outcomes endured by many Veterans, one resource and opportunity at a time. The founder, Dr. Melissa Williams, will oversee the overall management and operations of the organization with the help of the executive leadership team, staff, and volunteers. Dr. Melissa Williams believe strength is in numbers and power is in resources and education. This mission is bigger than the founder, and she will work tirelessly to uplift Veterans in need, providing resources to allow them to lift themselves out of their negative situations. Veteran Support Network Corporation is quite optimistic that its values will help drive the organization to accomplish its mission. Without a shadow of a doubt, there are a considerable number of alternatives, but Veteran Support Network Corporation will map out a unique model that will help it gain quick and sustainable acceptance and work its way to achieving equal opportunity for all. Veteran Support Network Corporation will champion an organization-toorganization partnership strategy to reach potential members and affiliates. By utilizing this multichannel approach, Veteran Support Network Corporation will be able to carry out its mission in its entirety and efficiently make strides towards its vision.

Organizational Structure Veteran Support Network Corporation is organized in a way to streamline operations. With a flat structure the company can keep focus on its mission which in turn will foster growth. A flat structure is where the top management is in direct contact with the executive leadership, employees at the floor levels, as well as the consumers. Given this structure, Veteran Support Network Corporation will ensure that everyone becomes adept at handling whatever work comes their way.

21

Market Research Summary Veteran Communities Veterans sacrificed their time, safety, and sanity to serve with the military, but face many challenges when they return home, one of which is a lack of understanding among civilians about their serving. There are 21.8 million veterans of the U.S. armed forces as of 2014, according to the Census Bureau, 10 percent of whom are women. To put that in context there are 319.2 million Americans, according to the bureau. Georgia is home to 709,287 Veterans, 7.8% of the state’s total population.

The Department of Veterans Affairs offers health and welfare services to Veterans but has fallen short in its task of serving the mental and physical needs of generations of former troops.

Government Programs and Services At the national level, VA provides a range of benefits and services to eligible veterans, including education benefits, vocational rehabilitation, disability compensation, and financial assistance. VA also provides health care to Veterans enrolled in its health care system. Georgia is

22

home to 5 VA hospitals, 29 community-based outpatient clinics, and 4 outpatient VA clinics and centers. Georgia also has a regional Veterans Benefits Administration office1. Of the nearly 630,000 veterans in Georgia, not all are eligible to receive VA benefits. However, data from the VA indicate that 36 percent of veterans were enrolled in the VA health care system in FY 2014, with around 61 percent of those enrolled were receiving care through VA. The rates of enrollment and health care use at the Veterans Health Administration are slightly lower than national rates where approximately 41 percent of veterans are enrolled and 75 percent of those enrolled use VA health care. Georgia veterans continue to report difficulty learning about available services and understanding how to access them2.

Social Determinants of Health According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), social determinants of health (SDOH) are conditions in the places where people live, learn, work, and play that affect a wide range of health and quality-of life-risks and outcomes.3 SDOH can be broken down into five key domains: education access and quality, health care access and quality, economic stability, neighborhood, and built environment, and social and community context.

Social determinants of health (SDOH) have a significant impact on people's health, wellbeing, and quality of life. Examples of SDOH include:4 •

3 4

Safe housing, transportation, and neighborhoods

https://www.cdc.gov/socialdeterminants/about.html https://health.gov/healthypeople/objectives-and-data/social-determinants-health 25

Racism, discrimination, and violence

Education, job opportunities, and income

Access to nutritious foods and physical activity opportunities

Polluted air and water

Language and literacy skills It is well known that social factors affect the risk for mental illnesses and substance use

disorders and the health outcomes of persons with these disorders.5 Social and environmental factors, in addition to their independent and combined effects, can influence genetic determinants of health and illness through gene-by-environment interactions and epigenetic mechanisms.

5

https://focus.psychiatryonline.org/doi/pdf/10.1176/appi.focus.20150017#:~:text=In%20this%20architecture%20of% 20risk,such%20illnesses%20when%20they%20occur. 26

The CDC believes resources that enhance the quality of life can significantly influence population health outcomes. Examples of these resources include safe and affordable housing, access to education, public safety, availability of healthy foods, local emergency/health services, and environments free of life-threatening toxins. Homeless Trends There are more than 550,000 homeless people in the US, a constant .17% of the entire US population; however, the homeless situation was much worse 10 years ago6. According to statistics from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the US homeless population has decreased 14.4% between 2007 and 2017. In 2007, there were 647,258 homeless Americans, compared to the 553,742 there are today. The change in the homeless population is especially pronounced in some states. Michigan led the nation by decreasing its homeless population by 68% between 2007 and 2017. New Jersey and Kentucky also both managed to post decreases of more than 50% over same period. Conversely, there were 14 states, one being, Washington, DC that saw their homeless populations rise from 2007 to 2017.

6

https://www.businessinsider.com/homeless-population-usa-states-2018-11 27

This figure is driven by issues with providing affordable and adequate housing opportunities, current drug laws, and the inaccessibility of important mental health resources. If other states have been able to significantly reduce Veteran homelessness, Georgia can do the same. Veteran Homelessness Veterans account for 11% of homeless adults in the US. On any given night, approximately 40,000 veterans are without shelter. The leading causes of homelessness among vets are PTSD, social isolation, unemployment, and substance abuse. While the number of homeless vets has steadily decreased over the past decade, one veteran without shelter is one too many. Causes of Veteran Homelessness The lack of affordable housing is a significant concern for everyone, not just vets. However, vets are impacted slightly more. Studies have shown that the lack of affordable housing is a significant factor for a veteran going homeless, especially among post-9/11 vets. In addition to lack of affordable housing, lack of job opportunities often plagues vets making it impossible to even pay for affordable housing if it were available. Vets often have a problem finding a job due to a combination of factors that may or may not include mental or physical problems and substance abuse.

The Warrior Alliance (https://www.thewarrioralliance.org/)

Veterans Empowerment Organization (https://www.veohero.org/)

Georgia Department of Veterans Service (https://www.facebook.com/gavetsvc/)

These organizations have established a reputation and positive representation in Georgia, over the years. Many of them have been serving our mission for a long time and could be regarded as one of the leading organizations in our niche; however, Veteran Support Network Corporation has taken all of this into proper consideration and has concluded there is still much to be done to uplift Veterans and disenfranchised individuals and communities. While Veteran Support Network Corporation recognizes they essentially compete with these organizations for vital funding and marketing space, they only exist to compete beyond that premise. Each entity is striving for the same or similar mission. For that reason, Veteran Support Network Corporation will be open to strategic alliances with competitors to further the mission. Nevertheless, Veteran Support Network Corporation will observe where these companies may have faltered, and thereby improve their capabilities.
