Our harbour is inside one of the longest Victorian breakwaters built that dates back to the 1850s at a time when the English Government was deeply concerned that the French would invade – probably from Cherbourg. Alderney being the closest piece of British soil to France was where the English decided to keep the fleet in readiness to intercept a possible attack. Enjoy the sweeping sandy bays and safe swimming followed by one of the many captivating coastal and country walks. Alderney’s serenity and breath-taking views gives it that ‘world away feeling’ from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

With a population of about 2,100, Alderney boasts its own Government with a President, 10 non-political States Members and a small Civil Service. The island is a part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey - with Sark and Herm – and is one the three Crown Dependencies along with Jersey and the Isle of Man.

We enjoy a temperate maritime climate without the extremes. It could be likened to a form of micro-climate being only a few miles from the coast of France and therefore the body of Europe, Russia and Asia to the east; while to the west is the Atlantic Ocean with its thousands of miles of sea before the next landmass being America.

As one body, the Channel Islands formed part of the lands of William the Conqueror. In 1204, France regained Normandy but not the offshore islands of the Bailiwick. Furthering the historical angle, Alderney boasts an early Iron Age camp, a Roman Fort (the largest ‘fortlet’ in the UK), Victorian Forts on every promontory, German bunkers & trenches and a museum that covers so much of its fascinating history. The island takes pride in its long-established sailing club, its excellent golf course with unrivalled views, tennis, cricket, football, rugby, shooting, squash and bowls to name just some of the sports. Unlike so many places throughout the world, driving on Alderney is actually a pleasure! Our maximum speed limit is 35mph and in town it drops to 15mph. We don’t suffer such modern innovations such as traffic lights and roundabouts. A leisurely slow drive waving at other motorists is the norm! There is an appealing French atmosphere in town with colourwashed homes and those with bare stone bordering onto cobbled streets taking us back 200 years in time. Down at the harbour there is more of a Cornish influence with granite surrounding the inner harbour. It is all a superb mix of history and today.
