PRAYER OF POPE FRANCIS FOR THE JUBILEE

CATHOLIC CHURCH: YEAR OF MERCY? Several Whiting faithful have recently asked, “What’s this year of Mercy I’m hearing about? What’s going on? When is it? What should we do?” First, some background. Pope Francis announced an “extraordinary jubilee,” a Holy Year of Mercy, to highlight the Catholic Church's "mission to be a witness of mercy." According to Catholic News Service, "No one can be excluded from God's mercy," the pope said March 13th, marking the second anniversary of his pontificate. "I frequently have thought about how the church can make more evident its mission to be a witness of mercy," he said during his homily; that is why he decided to call a special Holy Year, which will be celebrated from Dec. 8, 2015, until Nov. 20, 2016. The biblical theme of the year, he said, will be "Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful," an admonition that applies "especially to confessors," the pope said with a smile. Traditionally, every 25 years the popes proclaim a holy year, which features special celebrations and pilgrimages, strong calls for conversion and repentance, and the offer of special opportunities to experience God's grace through the sacraments, especially confession. “Extraordinary holy years,” like the Holy Year of Mercy, are less frequent, but offer the same opportunities for spiritual growth. "God never ceases to demonstrate the richness of his mercy over the course of centuries," the pope said in his homily, which preceded the confessions. God touches people's hearts with his grace, filling them with repentance and a desire to "experience his love." "Being touched by the tenderness of his hand," people should not be afraid to approach a priest and confess their sins, he said. In the confessional, one has "the certainty of being welcomed in the name of God and understood, despite our misery."

Lord Jesus Christ you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen. © Copyright Pontifical Council for the Promotion of New Evangelization, Vatican State. All rights reserved.

PEACE AND SOCIAL JUSTICE COMMUNITY UNITY

We as a Catholic Community are called to worship and to imitate the Trinity, and to live a life in which we are all one, as Jesus is one with the Father and the Spirit. We are to have in ourselves the image of the Trinity, to share a sacred relation to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. As a community we are to come together as having one heart and soul so that through this union of spirit we would be a true image of the unity of God. Pray to the Holy Spirit, who is the union of the Father and Son that he would likewise be ours, giving profound peace in the midst of contradictions and difficulties. We Pray: O Holy Trinity, truly you are a God of Unity – Give us one heart and one soul. Amen.

ONE CAN – MAKE A DIFFERENCE Next weekend (June 6th & 7th), the first weekend of the month, will be the Whiting Catholic Community’s monthly food collection in support of the Whiting Food Pantry. Your donations of canned & boxed food products, paper products and personal hygiene products can be placed on the pews or in the baskets at the center of church, and will aid the over one hundred families from the Whiting/Robertsdale community who get relief from food shortages on the first and third Fridays of each month. Your continued physical support and prayers allows the Pantry to continue to operate and fulfill the food needs of those in our community who face continual food insecurity.

Please continue to pray for all the service men and women who are currently serving in the military, especially: Matt Barbetta, Sean Bowman, Cristina Campos, Christina Campra, Sean Coleman, Larry Gazafy, Matthew Geffert, John Gervais, Gerardo Gonzalez, Gordon Goodwin, James Grunhard Jr., Alex Gonzalo Hernandez, Elliot Hlavaty, Matthew Hlavaty, Justin Jansky, Thomas M. FOREVER BLUE AND GOLD CHANGING OF THE GUARD

Plans are rapidly crystallizing for the 108 th graduation class from St. John the Baptist School. So much has changed since that first graduation class in 1907, comprised of three girls.* Keeping with the spirit of change, the Forever Blue and Gold Board has invited one of its members, Diane Puplava, to address the Class of 2015 at the traditional graduate breakfast. Diane, a 1964 St. John Graduate, is stepping down from her many dedicated years of service to St. John School and Parish. It is hoped that members of the class of 2015 will be inspired by Diane’s unselfish dedication and follow in her footsteps wherever life takes them. May God be with her and the Class of 2015! *St. John Jubilee Year 1897-1972

MISSIONARIES OF THE PRECIOUS BLOOD,

whose members minister in this parish, celebrate the 200th anniversary of their founding in 2015. A spirituality is the way we approach prayer, our relationship to God and each other, and everyday life. Each religious congregation has its own spirituality. Precious Blood spirituality guides the Missionaries of the Precious Blood. It has many aspects, but here is one description, from Fr. Ernie Ranly, C.PP.S.: “A spirituality of the blood will make us more sensitive to the cry of the blood (from the poor and the oppressed) in our world today. We should be very sensitive to the needs of reconciliation. A spirituality of the blood, inspired by the Blood of Christ, should be sensitive and make us react to the cries of innocent blood so rampant in our world today.”
