When people ask why informality has, for a great part, taken over whele rigid patterns once prevailed, we smilingly nod, clearly seeing the answer in our inquiiers' eyes. While it is of no use attributing entirely this fact to the rapidly changing times, we cannot but find it hard notto recognize progressan'd improvement with the passing of 'the years. Progress was shown to have lent usa hand by
on informality and flexibility, the two useful ingredients from which is baked the cake of creativity and imagination. However, in keeping with progress, one not only should introduce relatively new ideas and daringly innovative designs, passing
but at the same time retain unquestionably, the basic framework that so symbolises the much revered journal of St. Xavier's. Freedom for expression of the visual arts is laudable if a certain degree of restraint is imposed on irrelevant creations; the same holds true in the literary arts. lndeed, the literary section has been expanded to meet the large f low of contributions - authentic, aesthetic or otherwise?

Once again, The Xaverian is here
to stay, as regular
as
the end-of-year ho-
nours roll, and as determined to project as whole and elucid a picture as is possible of our Alma Mater. But just as it is impossible to mmpletely scan the whole universe with a mere telescope, we cannot help but inadvertently omit certain aspects in our focus on the school. lt is our earnest hope, howevbr, that we have not failed to meet high standards of keeping permanent records of achievements, aspiration-s,. activities, reports, messages by distinguished men, and recording as carefully as possible important events throughout the academic year of 1975.

enang lsland - Pearl of the Orient - is a mini Malaysia in itself. Founded in 1786, it has since come a long way. Today the island and its mainland province form the hub of a thriving region in a growing modern Malaysia. Yet for all the Western inroads of culture and influence the island still managesto retain its Eastern traditions and charm. lts multiracial population, diverse buildings and houses of worship, customs and dresses and ways of life form a harmonious cohesion of peace and goodwill in this island paradise. Georgetown City (pop. 330,000), the state capital situated on the north-eastern tip of the island reflects the scene of any Malaysian town with busy streets, noisy business, concrete.skyscrapers and ancient buildings. Occupying an integral part in this culture-filled, personal yet progressive city's history and groMh is an institution - located in the heart of the city amidst hotels and Chinatown type houses founded by a dedicateC group of Christian Brothers in '1852. This institution, the largest and oldest missionary school in the Far East and also one of the earliest English schools in Malaysia is St. Xavier's lnstitution. The present building is new. built from the ashes of World War ll, but its history and traditions are indelibly etched on its wall. However. rich values and memories must go hand in hand with development and growth and in this, Xaverians have since been able to forge an everlasting union.

The year 1975 saw the expansion of the Board of Break Monitors. The need
arose because of the increase in the number of duties in and around the cafetaria. The efficiency of the Board of Break Monitors has not diminished. The council of seniors has had its share of shortcomings but with each encounter we learn enough to place us in a better stead to handle further problems. We are grateful to Rev. Bro. Cglestine, Mr. Colin Rozells and the Head Prefect
for their constant
guidance.

The year 1975 saw a substantial improvement of the structure of the Board.
We have introduced a oommission to ensure the smooth €xit of bicycles during dismissal time. We fully support the no-parking period along certain tracts of Love Lane and Muntri Street in order to relieve congestion and
consequently minimise the chances of accidents occurring. A complete take-ov€r of the bicycle park from prefects was effected to widen the scope of duties that traffic wardens may perform. A partial take-over of the new motor-cycle park came about as a good challenge for the Board. Seniors were also posted at all gates. As a disciplinary board, traffic wardens not only saw to the good order in and around the parks, but they also advised students with regards to the proper safety measures for both rider and vehicle. Lastly, we acknowledge with gratitude the constant guidance from our Advisor and the Head Prefect.

The Board started the year with the official presentation of badges io class monitors in Forms One, Two and Three at the lower secondary assemblies in March. The Board was thus.put on par
with the othsr sub-boards. The Board as usual, had its teething problems in bringing together members who.range from Form One to Six. The Board was thus spilt into the Lower Secondary Board and Upper Secondary Board. The initial efforts were centred on the Lower Secondary Board where the need Jor coordination was greater. Nevertheless, the Board was successful in standardising class managements, activities etc. Efforts are now being made so that the Board's activities will cover both the lower and upper secondary, next year.

Every year, changes have been made to improvethe library in j6neral. 1975 is no on. As the library is wholly maintained by the student body, utmost consideraon for students has been the principal aim of the board; in terms of facilities, nformation, etc. In view of this, the 6th Form Section was enlarged to cater for the ncreasing 6th For:m population. But we really do hope a 6th Form Library could be lished in the near future. Also due to the changing curriculum in the lower the Bahasa Malaysia section was widely improved. Besides being a place for study and research, the library too maintains and students with certain services and facilities:Open to students from 7.30am - 6.00pm each week day. During the 3rd term, night service i: 6 - provided from 7.00pm - 10.00pm. O A book loan system, aided with Govt. funds, for 6th Form students. O A class library and class book toan system for lower forms. O A well-stocked career section containing invaluable information concerning further studies locally as well as overseas and various vocations. For all these to function smoothly, full credit must be given to all librarians as well as the advisors who sacrificed both time and effort. Finally, the Board wishes to convey its utmost thanks to the patrofl, Rev. Bro. Charles, Mrs. Wong, who ad since been transferred, Miss Wong, the present advisor, for their support and much needed advice, and r all those who have contributed to the library in one way or another.

All of us look with pride upon the magnificent work of St. Xavier's lnstitution, in not only the academic field but also in the field of sports, extra mural activities and especially the role it plays in preparing our youths to meet the challenges of a full life and for service to God, the nation and the community.
Education is a two way probess between teacher and pupil, each working in harmony and each contributing his share to the learning process. This rapport is evident in the publication of the Xaverian and the various activities and achievements of the school.
The warm co-operation of the staff and student body isappreciated and ! would urge all students to profit from the
educational opportunities offered at St. Xavier's to qualify as a useful citizen in society and to make the world a better place for all.
To the Editorial Board and all those responsible for the Xaverian, we convey our heartiest congratulations for another achievement!

Practices were regularly held on Mondays, and Fridays. One Under-18 and three Under-15 players were selected for state trials. The game was opened to sixth form girls under the charge of Mrs. Fong, aided by several student coaches. With the opening of three new volleyball courts, a marked improvement in standard is envisaged with further promotion of volleyball in the school. Wednesdays

SOFTBNLL . SXI stole the limelight at this year's
MSSPP So"ftball Carnival. The boys

team emerged champions while the girls team were runners-up in the girls event.
On the road to glory, the boys U-18 trounced almost every team they met. playing with superb confidence. ln the finals the Saints outplayed their opponents
from Sek. Men. Vokesyenal by 25 runs to 8, thus capturing the championship in a magnificent manner. This year was unique in the sense that for the first time in the history of St. Xavier's, she fielded a girls team, which played beyond expectations to become the runners-up in the girls event. Our girls played their hearts out only to lose to the eventual champs from Convent Light Street. The boys U-1 8 being a very new and inexperiencad one did not fare too well. Our thanks to the teachers, Mrs. Sim and Mr. Liau for having cpntributed so much of their time and effort in seeingto our welfare. Our special thanks to our coach, Weng Tuck, for having devoted his time, effort anrJ strength in coaching us to victory and without whom we may never have achieved so much. with you our battle-cry which prevailed throughout the tournament GO SAINTS GO!!!

Hockey developed into a very popular sport this'year, especially' after much active participation by the school teams and the fast-growing national attention instilled an extensive interest in Xaverians. ln December last year, we began our quest for hockey experience in order that an added boost be given to the team's standard. Literary Editors run around for reports

"Beneath this stone lie'four good men; and when We say their kindly thought towards qll men Was as generous to the living as to the dead What more for any mortal could. be'said? Their only enemies were those they tied To help, and failed; who blamed them; in their pide, Forgetting that their powers were not as great As their intentions - and their own weak state. And if they ry"t with men too slow to move Into the fullness of their own clear love, They looked for the fault of their own selves, and not Blomed other men - like our more common lot."
By W.H. Davies
MR. W.A. WILLIAMS On 22nd December 1974, at the age of 82, one of St. Xavier's most loyal sons passed away suddenly. His name was Mr. W.A. Williams but
of Xaverians, he was simply known
as "Master
to
generation
Willy".
He was an old student of the school and taught here for some 50 years. On returning, he became headmaster of St. Xavier's Private School until his final retirement a few years ago. For his contribution to education, he was presented the P. J. K. He was, is and shall be the example of what Xaverians should strive
to
be.
May he rest in peace.
MR. STEPHEN CHUAH FONG SEE After a long period of illness, Mr. Stephen Chuah passed away peacefully
on
17th February, 1975. He will always be remembered as a teacher who was friendly, cheerful and kindly. (To the budding athelete, he will always be the understanding housemaster, who through some encouraging words, will bring out the best in anyone). The "Xaverian 75" pays sincere and appreciative tribute on behalf of all associated with SXl, to this loyal and developed man. May he rest in peace.
REV. BROTHER ANDREW
SOH
Brother Andrew, a former teacher at St. Xavier's, passed away on 31st May. 1975 after a short period
of
illness,
He was a man who was very intellectually gifted and was a fine linguist. Brother last taught in St. Xavier's in 1965. Before his death, he was at the St. Joseph's
Training College. May he rest in peace of Christ.
MR. ARTHUR ANTHONY DE At the
age
ol 74, Mr. Arthur Anthony
