A HEAVENLY LIFE

MATTHEW 6:7-13 REV. CHARLIE WILFONG

It’s like heaven on earth. We say that about our favorite vacation spots. We respond when the view is spectacular, soothing, majestic, and moving. The beauty of nature certainly makes us consider heaven—the Divine. Then, there’s the other side of it. We’ve all known someone so focused on the after-life that they become a nuisance. A fanatic? The old saying goes, “Some people are too heavenly minded to be any earthly good.” So, what would heaven on earth be like for you? In the day-to-day? What’s “not right” about life the way it is now that would be different or better if this were “heaven?” Jesus turns our attention to this gap—between how life is here and now and how life would be if God’s desires were fulfilled entirely. And we can help!

But sometimes, our questions are complicated, and the answers are difficult to see and harder to articulate. How do we discover and examine the truths that give meaning and purpose to life? Adam Hamilton believes that some powerful answers are contained in the Apostles’ Creed, an early statement of foundational Christian beliefs.
