Comedy plays an important role in every individual’s life. Comedy’s presence is found all around us. Perhaps the most loved and consistent form of comedy is found in the expression of the film comedian. Since the birth of motion pic tures, audiences have looked to the great movie comedians for the unique view J of life that their films provide. Each of the great film comedians has his own distinct style, mannerisms, and characteristics. This is what separates them from the average comics. Examples of this “greatness” can be found in the innocence of Jerry Lewis, Charlie Chap lin’s tragicomic portrayal of the little tramp, Groucho Marx’s quick wit and sat ire, and the combination of spirit and energy in W.C. Fields. Each of the comedians drawn on the opposite page has that special quality which enables him to be readily accepted and loved by audiences all around the world. Our generation has a great need for comedy. The combined pressures of fam ily, school, and first jobs create an atmosphere which requires an outlet. This is where comedians, old and new, play an important role in our lives. We are grateful to comedians for their ability to laugh at themselves and at the world and its faults. Somehow, this makes our own problems conquerable.

“God bless all clowns So poor the world would be Lacking their piquant touch, hilarity, The belly laughs, the ringing, lovely mirth That makes a friendly place of this earth.
