Student 1 Commentary on student performance – photo card Communication The student is asked all 5 compulsory questions with no follow-up questions and this part of the test lasts for 2’40”. So the timing is fine and there was no need for the teacher to ask further questions. She gives understandable information in reply to all questions, although there is some lack of clarity in her answers to the second and last ones. However, despite some inaccurate language throughout, she is able to show some development of ideas, especially in reply to the first question. As far as the fourth question is concerned, she initially does not understand redes sociales and it is only when the teacher repeats the question and adds como por ejemplo Facebook that a response is given. The instructions to teachers state that the compulsory questions must be asked verbatim and so the reply to this question has to be ignored. As this is one of her longer replies, it prevents her from scoring in the 10-12 band. However, this would still have been the case had the teacher not given the extra help and so in this instance it may well have helped the student’s confidence, as she could answer all questions. Nevertheless, under normal circumstances teachers must keep to the exact wording of the compulsory questions. When this is not the case, the response is null and void. She gives and justifies two opinions which means that she fulfils the requirement for the top band, as far as the opinion/justification element is concerned. However, the general quality of response and the aforementioned slight loss of clarity mean that a mark in the 7-9 band is appropriate. She scores 9 marks because the verb formation is at times inaccurate and there is a consequential lack of precision. All of this means that her performance does not quite fulfil the criteria of the next band.

Commentary on student performance – general conversation In total, the Conversation lasts for just over six minutes but everything counts for assessment purposes because the time beyond six minutes is the student completing a sentence started previously. There is a slight imbalance between the two topics covered (2’36” and 3’34” respectively) but that isn’t a serious issue in itself as the overall timing is good. However, teachers do need to be mindful of the time and so avoid a serious imbalance between the two topic areas as this would impact negatively on the mark given. In an extreme case, where only one topic was covered, the maximum mark for Content would be 5 (see the commentary for Student 4).

Content The specified topics for this Photo Card are Travelling abroad and Being part of a community, and the teacher keeps within these subject areas. Her questioning is good, enabling the student to give plenty of opinions and to use different tenses. Many of the questions are open-ended and this gives the opportunity for the student to develop her answers if she can. The student answers all of the questions she is asked and there is regular development in her responses even though this development is quite limited most of the time. She gives her opinion on things throughout the conversation and justifies these opinions on several occasions. A mark in the 7-8 band is appropriate and she scores 7 because there are times when inaccurate language causes a delay in comprehension. Non-confidential

Range and Accuracy of Language The scope of her language is not complex, but she uses three tenses successfully and she communicates the intended message successfully for the most part, despite fairly frequent errors. There are exceptions towards the end, where it is difficult to know what she is trying to say (son bien por la gente ser muy bien con las otras gentes; es no tristo para las otras). Pronunciation and Intonation There are few problems with pronunciation (some French influence; rijjión; tiatro; móvils) but her pronunciation and intonation are generally good.

En el fondo del foto se pueden ver muchas edificios grandes y creo que son hotels porque hay mucha gente cerca de los edificios. También en el fondo de la foto se pueden ver montañas. Pienso que esta foto ha sido tomada en verano porque hacen buen tiempo y hace sol. ¿Qué actividades puedes hacer si vas de vacaciones en la costa? Si vas a la costa, se puede ir a la playa y se puede nadar en el mar y se pueden jugar juegos como el voleibol y también se puede tomar el sol. ¿Prefieres quedarte en un hotel o en un camping? Student 2 Commentary on student performance – photo card Communication The student gives clear information in sentence form in response to all five compulsory questions in 2’35” and he is not asked any follow-up questions. There are some errors but these do not have a bearing on communication. His replies all have some development and he gives several opinions, all of which he is able to justify well. For this reason his performance comfortably fits the criteria for the top band and he gets full marks.

Commentary on student performance – general conversation Content This is a very good student who is able to express and justify points of view and to give clear information in response to all the questions asked of him. The conduct of this part of the test is exemplary, with the teacher asking questions which elicit responses using different tenses and which encourage the student to give and justify opinions. It lasts for 5’15”. He fulfils the criteria for the 7-8 band quite comfortably and it can be argued that this is where the mark should be, bearing in mind that some of the replies are not developed too well. In order to score in the top band for Content in this exam, it is fine for there to be slightly more emphasis on the ability to have a more natural exchange of information at the expense of very long responses, or mini speeches, which have become common to in CA.

Range and Accuracy of Language There is only one serious grammatical error in the whole of the General Conversation, when he uses the imperfect discutíamos instead of the present discutimos. There are few other errors and these are relatively minor in that they have no effect on comprehension - incorrect adjectival agreement for example. He uses some complex language (for example si ganara la lotería, compraría ...; teniendo en cuenta que ...; la recomendaría) and uses five verb tenses successfully and confidently.

Pronunciation and Intonation His pronunciation and intonation are almost flawless and his only mistake is antés for antes.

Interaction and Fluency He responds readily to all questions and shows some initiative by developing many of his answers. He expresses himself fluently and is given full marks.

Student 3 Commentary on student performance – photo card Communication The discussion of the card lasts for 3’10” but everything counts for assessment purposes, as the student is mid-sentence at the 3-minute mark and she is allowed to complete the sentence. She is asked the five compulsory questions and there are no follow-up questions, although the teacher does ask an extra one in question 2, which is contravening the regulation that the compulsory questions should be asked verbatim. This response is therefore discounted. The teacher also provides the word pendientes, which of course cannot be considered for assessment purposes when the student merely repeats it. There are grammatical errors and errors of pronunciation but, as a general rule, these do not interfere with communication, apart from todo es mismo and la gemia. Her replies to the first, fourth and fifth questions are longer answers and so the performance fits the 10-12 band criteria well.

Commentary on student performance – general conversation The topics for this Photo Card are Travelling abroad and Being part of a community. Unfortunately, the second part of the conversation deals with the topic of Socialising and so must be ignored for the purposes of assessment. At 6’25” the General Conversation is too long and, had it been relevant to the prescribed topics, the final sentence would have had to be discounted. The questioning by the teacher is really good and suitable for the level of this student.

Content It is only on the first part of the Conversation, concerning Travelling Abroad, that we can base the assessment because the rest is irrelevant to the specified topics. The student gives extended replies to all five of the questions that she is asked and scores 5 marks, which is half of the marks that are available for the General Conversation, as only one of the two topics is covered and, in such a circumstance, this is the maximum mark available.

Range and Accuracy of Language There are some errors during the part of the conversation that is concerned with holidays but none of them has a derogatory effect on communication. There are examples of more complex language and of more unusual vocabulary (si + imperfect subjunctive + conditional; jirafas; Espero que estos animales no se haguen extintos) and she uses six verb tenses successfully. She gets 8 marks, which is the highest mark possible given that she was awarded 5 for Content.

Pronunciation and Intonation Her pronunciation is generally good throughout the relevant part of the Conversation and there are few mispronunciations.

Interaction and Fluency She answers without hesitation and there is some flow of language.
