Dear

Friends, Patients and Supporters,

President & Chief Operating Officer, Carroll Hospital Senior Vice President, LifeBridge Health

Chair, Carroll Hospital Board of Directors

Our story began more than six decades ago, thanks to a community with big dreams, caring hearts and an overwhelming outpouring of devotion. And ever since the hospital’s inception, you—our circle of supporters—have consistently put in the time, commitment and contributions to carry on the tradition of delivering high quality, compassionate care in our close-knit community. We all have a giving story—something in our lives that inspired us to make a difference through our own individual gifts. This report highlights some of the heartfelt accounts of our loyal supporters and what shaped them to give back to Carroll Hospital and BridgingLife. Whether they’re partners who were inspired by a doctor’s kindness, longtime donors who continuously invest in the hospital’s future or volunteers who are always there to offer a helping hand, each story connects us. You have been the author behind some of our biggest success stories—keeping our community healthy with access to award-winning medical programs, advanced surgical services and skilled medical professionals. And thanks to all of you—our donors, volunteers, physicians, team members and patients—we can continue to care bravely and write the next chapter in Carroll Hospital’s story. We can leave a remarkable legacy for generations to come. When we share our giving stories, straight from the heart, it brings us closer together and shapes the very foundation of our community. And this is only the beginning…so let’s keep writing.

Vice President of Development Brenda Frazier’s Story

After taking a leap of faith more than a decade ago, Brenda Frazier begins the most important chapter of her career as the NEW Vice President of Development for the Carroll Hospital Foundation.

Brenda Frazier’s career path to Carroll Hospital began the old-fashioned way: she answered a newspaper ad. After years spent managing mortgage offices, Brenda was itching for a change. When the ad promoting a job in fundraising caught her eye, she decided to take a leap of faith. “I honestly didn’t know much about fundraising or development. But I understood on a gut level that success depended on your ability to build genuine relationships, which was something I loved doing,” Brenda recalls. “I also knew that, even if I wasn’t the most experienced person in the room, no one would ever outwork me.” Powered by her resolve, Brenda landed that first fundraising job in 2008 and quickly climbed the ranks, eventually joining the Carroll Hospital Foundation as director of development in 2010 and then serving as associate vice president of development and leadership gifts at McDaniel College from 2018 to 2021. During that 11-year span, her teams raised a combined $62.75 million for their organizations. In 2021, she rejoined the Carroll Hospital Foundation as the new vice president of development after the retirement of longtime vice president of corporate development and chief development officer, Ellen Finnerty Myers. “I realize that I have very big shoes to fill,” says Brenda. “One of my most important jobs will be to grow the culture of gratitude that Ellen started here—to make sure that every Carroll Hospital and BridgingLife donor feels appreciated for the impact they’re making on our community.” She also intends to carry on her own tradition of making big ideas happen. For example, it was Brenda who helped lead the Foundation’s $23 million Campaign to Cure & Comfort, Always, which ultimately paved the way for the William E. Kahlert Regional Cancer Center and Tevis Center for Wellness. “Without a doubt, bringing those centers to fruition has been a career highlight for me,” she shares. “We were able to go above and beyond our original vision because the community’s generosity was so astounding. I am very excited to see what we can accomplish next.” No matter what comes next, Brenda knows one thing for sure: every dollar donated to the Carroll Hospital Foundation stays at Carroll Hospital as an investment into the community’s health. “That’s how our Foundation was established, and it remains true to this day,” she says. “Carroll County has been my home for almost 20 years. This community is important to me. This is where my family receives their healthcare. Knowing that it’s my job to support that mission—and to support the entire healthcare system for our community—is an honor. This Foundation is my heart, and I feel incredibly blessed to be here.”

Wayne and Bonnie Barnes’ Story

With a family legacy of giving to Carroll Hospital, Wayne and Bonnie Barnes’ latest gift sparks a new beginning for hospital and hospice patients.

While there’s no textbook example for why people give, if you look up “giving” in the dictionary you’d be sure to see a picture of Wayne and Bonnie Barnes. Donating to more than 25 charities, the retired Air National Guard veteran and former assistant high

school principal have dedicated their lives to serving others. “We like to stay busy by being involved in the community,” states Wayne, who has served as past president for several prominent Carroll County establishments— including the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce and the Charles Carroll Lions Club. His wife, Bonnie, known throughout the community for her commitment to educating Carroll County’s youth, now enjoys working on their family farm. But of all the causes that the Barnes hold dear to their hearts, one in particular has been a part of their story since the beginning.

In addition to years of giving to Carroll Hospital and BridgingLife, Wayne has volunteered more than 15 years of board service to both organizations, including serving as chair of BridgingLife’s Board of Trustees and treasurer for the Carroll Hospital Foundation Board. Now, they have made their most generous contribution yet: a gift to honor the memory of their son, Taylor, who passed away unexpectedly in 2020. As an unrestricted gift, the donation will fund the hospital community’s greatest needs, including the expansion at Dove House, BridgingLife’s

1623 Brewing’s Story

Mike and Sandy McKelvin are re-writing the rules of craft brewing with a business that puts community first.

“We have something special here, and we should do whatever we can to help it continue to grow.”

When Mike McKelvin’s wife, Sandy, was pregnant with their first child, he attempted to brew his first batch of beer on their kitchen stove. “The smell was making Sandy so nauseous. She told me that if I ever brewed in our home again, she was out,” he recalls with a laugh. Twenty-four years later, the couple has two grown daughters—Jordan, 24, and Cameron, 23—and two thriving family businesses: Griffith Brothers Construction and 1623 Brewing Company, which they launched in partnership with Mike’s cousin, Zac Rissmiller, in 2018. The brewery is a true family affair, but it’s become a community affair as well. In fact, the motto “Family Owned, Community Driven” is stamped on every 1623 Brewing can that leaves their Eldersburg facility.

Owners Mike and Sandy McKelvin host community fundra isers at their Eldersburg tapro om. “When our daughter was in high school, she created a Birdies for Babies golf fundraiser that raised more than $6,500 for pediatric oncology patients. That jumpstarted our thinking with the brewery,” Sandy explains. “How can we get creative and raise money for people who aren’t expecting it? The Carroll Hospital Foundation was one of our first calls.” Since that first call, 1623 Brewing has quickly become one of Carroll Hospital and BridgingLife’s most frequent supporters, hosting a variety of fundraisers (see below), including the 2022 return of Taste of Carroll, BridgingLife’s signature tasting event. “We are so grateful that we can host Taste of Carroll in person this year in partnership with Mike and Sandy,” says Heather Akers, manager of special events and programs for the Foundation. “1623 Brewing is the perfect venue in times like these because it’s a huge indoor space that functions like an outdoor space. And Mike and Sandy are just amazing people. The fact that they have chosen to be our partners gives us all the confidence in the world.” “We look for ways to integrate the hospital into a lot of what we do,” Mike explains. “There are many places where people have to drive an hour or two to get the level of care that Carroll Hospital gives us. We have something special here, and we should do whatever we can to help it continue to grow.” The McKelvins have discovered that they aren’t the only ones who feel this way. For the brewery’s Bands & Brews fundraiser, a number of others unexpectedly chipped in, including SOS Potties, one of the event’s vendors. “They actually deducted a portion from their invoice and asked us to donate those savings back to the hospital,” Sandy explains. “Little gestures like that let us know we can do big things for the community because there are so many people who want to step up and help.”

Raising a Glass to Carroll Hospital & BridgingLife “We want to build long-term relationships with the charities we care about,” explains Mike McKelvin. And that’s exactly what they’ve done with the Carroll Hospital Foundation.

“Miss Donna” Lee’s Story

Inspired by the work of the late Anna McDonald—who was an integral part of Northwest Hospital’s founding—Donna Lee (affectionately known throughout the community as “Miss Donna”) has always understood the role of a hospital in the community. “I’ve always been intrigued with how many people it takes to keep a hospital functioning,” states Miss Donna. “And when we give to hospitals, we’re keeping our community well and whole.” After moving to Carroll County in 2016 and witnessing firsthand the quality services at Carroll Hospital, Miss Donna knew she wanted to give back. “There are many avenues for giving that get us to the same path,” she shares. “When I was younger, I volunteered my time; now that I’m older, I can give back with my means.” And that she does. Miss Donna selects community members “of the highest caliber” who’ve made a difference in her life and donates in their name to Carroll Hospital. “It’s a way for me to thank them while helping others too,” she says. Some of her honorees include a lieutenant officer with the Hampstead Police Department and a financial services expert at M&T Bank—and she continues to come up with new ideas to help improve the hospital and spotlight changemakers.

Joe Ciecwierz’s Story

Eleven years ago, former longshoreman Joe Ciecwierz and his wife, Kathleen, moved to Carroll County after leaving their home in Edgemere off the Chesapeake Bay. Both retired, the couple wanted to live in a community that was in close proximity to a hospital. “My wife has issues with her spine, so we’ve visited several ERs. Carroll Hospital’s was more attentive, involved and personal,” shares Joe. “Those experiences alone were enough to make me want

to give back.” After finding out about the Carroll Hospital Foundation, Joe started to make donations monthly—increasing his gift each year. “My dad used to always say, ‘Whatever you give, you’ll get back in tenfold,’” Joe recalls. “Between the expert services, dedication to patients and familial atmosphere, I can confidently say I’ve received more than tenfold back from Carroll Hospital.” Now in his tenth year of monthly giving to the hospital, Joe continues to give because it’s flexible and convenient—and because he knows it makes a difference. “I always get a letter of thanks from the hospital that details how my gift is helping them accomplish their goals,” says Joe. “It means a lot.”

The Cardiovascular Lab Team’s Story

Powered by state-of-the-art technology—and the community generosity that funds it— this team is making sure critically ill patients can live to tell another tale.

Heart disease is relentless. But so is the cardiovascular lab team at Carroll Hospital. “We get calls in the middle of the night, on the weekends, and we drop everything to come in,” says Ashley Keating, manager of the cardiovascular labs at Carroll Hospital. “To know that we can save someone’s life in those moments is a wonderful thing. It gives us purpose.” The team is responsible for performing a wide variety of life-saving cardiac procedures, including emergency angioplasty to restore blood flow for patients in cardiac arrest and elective angioplasty, which can help prevent heart attacks for high-risk patients. “Our team works exceptionally well together, but it’s just as important to have top-of-the-line technology,” says Ashley. “And we’re very thankful that investing in technology is a priority at Carroll Hospital.” Case in point: last year, Carroll Hospital made a big investment in what’s been dubbed “the world’s smallest heart pump:” the Impella CP®. The Impella CP stabilizes the most critically ill cardiac patients, including those in cardiogenic shock and those requiring resuscitation or surgical intervention in order to survive. “For patients who need it, the Impella CP can be the difference between life and death,” says Ashley. “It allows us to get them stabilized, and it gives them a chance to see their grandchildren again.” The Impella CP is not the only new addition. In September, the hospital’s first of three cardiovascular labs underwent a state-of-the-art renovation, complete with a GE Innova® image guidance system that provides crystal-clear imaging quality while also lowering radiation dosing by as much as 75 percent. “The difference in imaging is night and day,” Ashley explains. “During angioplasty procedures, for example, it allows us to size and position the stents with next-level precision.”

“Without our donors and our community, our team wouldn’t be able to deliver the level of care that we do.” Both the GE Innova and the Impella CP were made possible by the hospital’s unrestricted giving fund. In unrestricted giving, donors do not designate how their gifts should be used, thus enabling Carroll Hospital to spend the money where it’s needed most. “Without our donors and our community, our team wouldn’t be able to deliver the level of care that we do. We wouldn’t have the technology,” says Ashley. “It’s a privilege to have this technology. We don’t take it for granted.” 14 | 2021 Annual Report

Dawn Grammer Executive Assistant to Information Systems at Carroll Hospital Dawn Grammer knows firsthand how donations benefit the hospital and its patients. Having worked in Dietary Services, Patient Accounting and Information Systems for more than 24 years, she makes it a priority to give back to the hospital through campaign giving. “It all connects,” shares Dawn. “You see how all of the jobs work together—from the doctors and nurses who deliver care, to those who work tirelessly to maintain the hospital’s patient-centered environment.” For Dawn, her reasons for giving connect to personal matters. “I had both hips replaced at Carroll Hospital, my daughter was born in the first stages of The Family Birthplace and my grandmother was cared for at Dove House—these events have all touched me personally and inspired me to give,” says Dawn. She also encourages others who have been impacted by Carroll Hospital to contribute their gifts—big or small, either financially or through volunteering. “We’re all going to need the hospital at some point in our lives, and sometimes it needs us, too.”

Danielle Schubert HR Business Partner at Carroll Hospital When Danielle Schubert’s supervisor asked her to be a team captain for Carroll Hospital’s campaign committee—which encourages team members to give—she didn’t hesitate before accepting. “My entire family was either born at Carroll Hospital, had broken bones treated there or used one of its many services,” states Danielle. “Giving back is a given for me because Carroll Hospital is at the center of my family’s health. Now I get to motivate people to donate, too.” By talking one-on-one with coworkers, Danielle is able to share her own giving story while helping others discover theirs. “It really pulls on your heartstrings seeing how your contribution can support someone else,” says Danielle. “I’ve given back to hospice for my parents, Family Birthplace for my daughter and the hospital for its incredible care during the pandemic. The people who take care of us are people we know from the community—it’s a way to thank them too.”
