CONGRATULATORY MESSAGE MINISTER OF EDUCATION, YOUTH, SPORTS AND CULTURE HONOURABLE JONEL POWELL It is for me a singular honour to extend warmest congratulations to all the former students of the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College who are graduating today. You have successfully met the requirements to graduate and are worthy of the commendations of the government and people of this, our proud Federation. Our country stands ready support you in your pursuits and look forward to your positive contribution to nation building. You can safely say yesterday is the past, tomorrow is the future, but today is a gift. That’s why it is called the present. St. Kitts and Nevis, like the rest of the world, was impacted beyond measure by the Corona Virus Pandemic. In spite of these extraneous circumstances, you persevered, you demonstrated resilience, and your perseverance and resilience have enabled you to secure your seat in the Class of 2021 and at today’s Commencement Ceremony. I trust that after your sojourn here at the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College, you have emerged with greater skill sets, confidence, and determination to embrace the future with renewed fevour. I urge you to be resolved to carve out a path to success; always use the special gifts within you, to help you to reach your fullest potential. As you celebrate your different levels of victory and look forward to greater success, be mindful that there will always be challenges ahead of you. We encourage you to commit to be the best version yourselves in pursuit of excellence. All of you deserve the accolades showered on you this evening. Congratulations CFBC Class of 2021! Hon Jonel Powell

CONGRATULATORY MESSAGE CHAIR, BOARD OF GOVERNORS DR SARAH OWEN On behalf of the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College Board of Governors I extend hearty congratulations to you – the graduating class of 2021! Last year I listened to Mr. Timothy Antoine, Governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, quote Winston Churchill as saying ‘we make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give’. Governor Antoine suggested that we can give in five ways: through our time; talents; treasure; testimony and touch. Today we celebrate you our graduates as members of our CFBC community in a signal achievement of completing your programmes of study in a variety of disciplines. The certificates you receive reflect the knowledge you gained while you and the communities that surround you gave time, talent, treasure, testimony and touch. I encourage you to continue this journey upon which you have embarked – a journey of learning that began at a very early age as there is a simultaneous giving and receiving that underscores lifelong learning, which can help us to be more resilient and more content. As the dynamics of employment and fulfilment shift, I urge you to keep in touch with lecturers and administrators at the CFBC to keep abreast of all that is available to you – the options are increasing and evolving as we speak. This commitment to lifelong learning will help us to maintain the resilience we continue to demonstrate as a people of the Caribbean. The CFBC remains committed to providing opportunities for increased knowledge and encourages you to grasp them and utilize this learning to continue to achieve your full potential. In so doing you will lead your communities, companies, and countries forth in these unimaginable times. Congratulations to each and every one of you for the goals you have achieved; your CFBC community salutes you!

CONGRATULATORY MESSAGE VICE PRESIDENT - ACADEMIC AND STUDENT AFFAIRS DR MOYIA ROWTHAM On behalf of the administration, faculty and staff of the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College, I extend heartfelt congratulations to the Class of 2021 and in particular to the top performers within each Division. Accept your academic achievements with dignity and pride and remember those who enabled you along the way. To you the legendary Class of 2021, celebrate being the first ever to be virtually saluted in graduation mode, and in March, which interestingly was the first month in the oldest of Roman calendars which ended in December! We acknowledge your uniqueness and wish that you can echo the sentiments that “there is no one alive who is Youer than You” (Dr. Seuss). You have endured the road that many would have feared to tread. You hurdled the challenges of sleepless nights, arduous academic tasks, seemingly unreasonable deadlines, and hours deprived of recreation. All of this would have been compounded by a global threat that has changed the established expectations of schooling and scholastic achievements, as well as those of play and pleasure. As an institution, we recognise your accomplishments, but also encourage you to believe in what you can become as you don the robes of resilience. The theory of resilience puts forward the view that the essence of adversity is not as critical as the way in which one handles it. Enhance your resilience so that you can critically respond to unexpected negativity that threatens all modes of stability. Be thankful for the great, small and seemingly mundane. Demonstrate tolerance and understanding, because even the so-called foolish has a perspective. Know your purpose in life as you remain true to yourself and your values. Focus on the glass that is half full though you know that half of it is empty. Connect with like minds who inspire you to magnify your strengths, remind you that self-improvement is important, and share that you remain kind to everyone, including the fallen. Trust your instincts and accept the bitter with the sweet, though you seek to make the better choice. Forgive as if your life depends on it and give no one the power to control your emotions. Let go of grudges and anticipate the end of the day, which brings a new tomorrow. Amid it all, just stand! As you are celebrated and your achievements are highlighted, I wish you a life with endless possibilities because: “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose” (Dr. Seuss). Walk good. Moyia Rowtham, PhD Vice-President of Academic and Student Affairs

CONGRATULATORY MESSAGE FACULTY REPRESENTATIVE, BOARD OF GOVERNORS MRS SEANA WILLIAMS ROGERS On behalf of the faculty of the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College, it is my honour and privilege to extend heartiest congratulations to you, the Class of 2021, on this our 33rd Commencement Ceremony. As your faculty, we are proud of your determination and your endurance. Class of 2021, you completed your tenure during the unprecedented times of a global pandemic. We know you felt the added pressure. We know your life was interrupted. We know you toiled in the midst of uncertainty. However, despite these challenges, or possibly because of them, we know you are stronger. You are a stronger student and a stronger person. We know you overcame the unexpected and you persevered. You found the ingenuity and resolution you did not know you possessed in the midst of these trying times and your accomplishments are even more impressive as a result. As we proceed through this pandemic, we pray for your continued commitment to the health and safety of you and your loved ones. May you always aspire to greatness, perspire through determination and inspire others around you! Congratulations and best wishes always,

CONGRATULATORY MESSAGE STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE, BOARD OF GOVERNORS MR. CURJE STEVENS To the Graduates of the CFBC Class of 2021, On behalf of the Student Government Association, I congratulate you on this milestone, completing your studies at the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College. We know that for many of you, this achievement is the first stepping stone on your career and personal development path, so we wish you all the best as you journey on to your future endeavours. I am sure that many, if not all of you, remember your first day of college. No doubt you were a little overwhelmed, but during your tenure here, you managed to meet new friends, cultivate great habits and have experiences that will serve you for a lifetime . Nevertheless, this has been a difficult two years, though you persevered through the pandemic and all of its challenges. I hope that the good memories and hard-earned successes outweigh any challenges that you may have had. And I applaud your hard work and dedication despite the odds. Allow me to share two quotes as I encourage you to keep pursuing your dreams and to never give up on your goals. The first is from Mary Anne Radmacher: “Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, ‘I will try again tomorrow.” The other is, “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do, keep moving forward” (Martin Luther King, Jr.). I do hope that you are inspired and that the next step of your journey will be a fruitful one as you move ever closer to your career and personal goals. I am delighted to share in the excitement of your graduation day as I am very proud of your achievements. I wish you every success in life nad heartfelt congratulations! Curje Stevens President, Student Government Association

COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER MS. MICHELE RANNIE Born and raised on the beautiful island of St. Kitts in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, Ms. Michele Rannie migrated to the United States some twenty years ago. Ms. Rannie was valedictorian of her graduating class of what was formerly known as the St. Theresa’s Convent School, then went on to complete Sixth Form at the Basseterre High School. During this period, Ms. Rannie was also crowned Ms. Convent High and Ms. Talented Teen. At the tertiary level, Ms. Rannie earned her Bachelor of Laws at the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies in Barbados, and completed her Legal Education Certificate at the Norman Manley Law School in Jamaica. Ms. Rannie then returned to St. Kitts and practiced for some time as a Crown-Counsel in the Office of the Attorney General. After migrating to the United States, Ms. Rannie attended Hofstra University’s School of Law, and completed a Master of Laws at that institution. Ms. Rannie is now a practicing civil-litigation attorney, admitted to practice in the State Supreme and Federal Courts of New York, in the United States of America. Ms. Rannie is Partner and Chair of the Labour and Employment Group at the law firm ROZARIO TOUMA, P. C. in New York.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE TEACHER EDUCATION DIVISION MS. JANIECIA POWELL Janiecia Alisha Powell, affectionately known as Jay, was born in Nevis on April 16, 1995. V & J’s Preschool, Ivor Walters Primary School, Charlestown Secondary School and the Division of Arts, Sciences and General Studies of the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College provided the foundation for her educational pursuits. At these institutions, she also fully engaged in as many extracurricular activities as she could. Thus she competed in spelling bee competitions, sang in the school’s choir, joined the Girls’ Guides, played steel pan and tennis and participated in the Young Leaders’ group. She believes her critical thinking skills were honed through her involvement in these activities . Janiecia also furthered broadened her studies by participating in the REACH Programme conducted by the Nevis Island Administration. This enabled her to read for seven courses offered by the University of the West Indies. She not only succeeded in these endeavours but also received the most outstanding student award. Janiecia’s experiences at the CFBC and REACH gave her the confidence to transition into the world of work. She was first employed as a secretary at Theodore L. Hobson and Associates and there developed her effective communication and time management skills. At the same time, she was also soul searching about the career path she wanted to follow, and once she realized her calling was a career in teaching, her time there was short-lived. However, it was observing her eldest sister and helping her prepare for classes that persuaded Janiecia to enrol in the Teacher’s Prospect course. At the end of the course, she was employed at the Gingerland Secondary School, an experience that altered her life in positive ways. Thus she was driven to become a trained, professional teacher, leading to her second tenure at the CFBC. Janiecia’s finds teaching to be heart-breaking, happy, fun, and sad. Teaching has also resulted in some of the most teachable moments of her life. And though it is challenging to apply multiple teaching styles to cater for different types of learners, and though she is amazed by the changes and progress that she has had to experience to pursue this most noble profession, Janiecia loves her calling.

THE ACADEMIC REGALIA The academic costumes worn today come to us from the medieval universities of Britain. When European universities were taking form in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the scholars were usually clerics as well, and consequently, they adopted costumes like those of their monastic orders. Cold halls and draughty buildings made caps and floor-length gowns with attached hoods a necessity for warmth. Probably because of the religious heritage of the academic costumes, they remained largely drab until universities gradually began to pass from the control of the church, whereupon some aspects of the costumes took on brighter hues. Old prints reveal a strong similarity between the regalia worn in early universities and the academic costumes worn today. The flowing gown has become symbolic of the democracy of scholarship for it covers any dress that might indicate rank or social stratum. However, while some colleges continue to adhere to the traditional black gown, many colleges have gowns of a distinctive colour, hence the royal blue of the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College’s gown. The hood is the most colourful and distinctive piece of the academic ensemble and denotes the degree held. The length, lining and trim reveal the wearer’s degree, area of study and alma mater. The hood is worn draped over the shoulders with the lining exposed. It is lined with the school’s official colours. The lining of the hoods worn by a graduate of the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant denotes the Division of the College that housed their programme of study. The hood of the Division of Adult and Continuing Education is lined in green; that of the Division of Arts, Sciences and General Studies is lined in red; that of the Division of Teacher Education in yellow; and the Division of Technical and Vocational Education and Management Studies is represented by burgundy. The graduates of the Division of Health Sciences wear different hoods lined with colours representing their area of expertise: white lines the hood of the midwifery graduates and navy blue lines that of the enrolled nursing assistants. Graduates of the Bachelor of Science (Nursing) wear the academic regalia of the University of the West Indies—the blue princetta gown with cape sleeves, blue outside hood faced with purple and top edge bound with University red. Those graduates who have earned the right to graduate with honours are distinguished from their peers by the stole draped around their shoulders. On each stole is written the class of honours which has been earned by the wearer—summa cum laude (with highest honour); magna cum laude (with high honour) and cum laude (with honour). The fabrics of the stole are those of the national dress of the Federation and are chosen for their national symbolism. The cords mark those students who were involved in the extra and co-curricular life of the College.

THE MACE From the earliest times, the mace served as a symbol of power and authority and was carried for protection. During the Middle Ages, European universities adopted the use of the mace to symbolize the authority of the faculty over academic programmes. The Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College’s mace serves as a symbol of growth and prosperity and the incorporation of former practices with new traditions. Our Mace is crafted from mahogany and carries two silver plaques. One represents the origins of the College as it bears the seal of the earlier College of Further Education. The other bears the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College seal. Much like the traditional mace, this mahogany staff, embodies the strength of our institution, while personifying the life and continuous expansion of our academic traditions. The College’s Chief Marshal carries the Mace.

THE MEDALLION The Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College medallion is given to a new President to represent a transfer of the responsibility of office and an obligation to promote and maintain the values represented by the institution. The medallion is crafted in silver with a base measuring three and a half inches. Mounted on the base is a disc of the College’s seal. The medallion is worn suspended by a chain with horizontal links representing the Principals and Presidents who have served the College. The presidential medallion is the official insignia of the College President and is worn at Commencement and on other ceremonial occasions.

THE CEREMONIAL KEY The practice of bestowing ceremonial keys dates to ancient times. During the pomp and pageantry of ceremonial occasions, the keys are put on display to symbolize the authority of the institution and its leader. These keys are ornamental and open no doors. Although designated “for use on public occasions”, the ceremonial keys make cameo appearances for presidential installations alone. The key to the College is handed to the President as a symbol of the office. The key will be part of the collections of the College’s archives and records.

THE COLLEGE PRAYER O Lord God Almighty, You have given us the power of intellect And the glory and the anguish of the choice of freedom. Give us the ability to always think and choose aright, To wisely determine our destiny, And to shape the lives of others. Give us the courage to use our intellect and skills For improvement of your world. Deliver us from self-deception and delusion; From timidity and flight from responsibility. Help us to reject the shallow, the artificial and the trivial. May our efforts assist us in rediscovering those values Which enrich our lives, Promote our designs, And purify our minds. Grant that we may serve you with zeal, Be a friend to those in need, Courteous to our equals, Just to those we serve, And sympathetic to those in distress, For Jesus Christ’s sake, Amen.

Mission Statement To foster the development of responsible, self-sufficient citizens by delivering a range of academic, professional and vocational courses and programmes that reflect high values and standards and which prepare students to make lifelong contributions to their communities.
