Dear Seniors,

Congratulations on making it to 2021, the year we never thought would arrive. Whether you have been at GFS since you were in diapers or you came just in time to start the college process, you have all made a tremendous impact on your classmates. We, the Anno editors, want to take a moment to commemorate our time together.

We are the grade that could never leave a middle school assembly without having to stay late—thank you, Sean Hamer. We are the grade that has been witness to dancing teachers: “All Night” (that eighth grade teacher parody), and TikTok’s shining stars, Alyson, June, and Matthew Young. We are the grade that has had nine different schedules in four years. We are the grade that took a J-Term field trip to the circus: not to see it, but to be it. We are the grade that never stops talking—have you ever met a teacher bored by us? And, we are the grade that lost over a quarter of our high school experience to the Coronavirus pandemic. If you’re reading this in June of 2021, you’re probably all too familiar with Colloquia, our beloved-by-some and dreaded-by-most online learning program. But, when you (hopefully) look back at this book years in the future, you might have forgotten what really happened during your last year at GFS. We’ll tell you this, it wasn’t like High School Musical 3: Senior Year. We weren’t spontaneously breaking into song together, because, well, Zoom lag is real. We spent too much time staring at grids of small rectangles on screens, trying to make meaning out of seemingly endless Google Slides, Jamboards, Padlets, Loom and FlipGrid videos, and Pear Decks. We agonized, stressed, and rejoiced over college; it’s funny how even a pandemic can’t get rid of that. We came to learn what a “lunch monitor” is: someone employed to make sure you are as far apart from your friends as possible.

Still, we made it our year. We watched a movie—the right hand side of a movie—sitting in the rain on the field hockey field. We played grade trivia sponsored by cafeteria bagels, coffee, and hot chocolate. We created our own sports competitions when there were none—wrestling dummies, speedy stpirrels vs. red team vs. Remy’s rats, spirit days. We played badminton and table tennis under the fluorescent glow of Field House and Scat, crtishing and being crushed by our friends. We gorged on Student Council donuts. We got into college! We perfected our multitasking skills: sleeping while attending Zoom Webinar assemblies while making pancakes. As yearbook editors, we curated a book to best represent our high school experience. We also spent hours pestering vou to send us photos, pages, and superlatives. While this initially brought no joy, it turned into one of our greatest pleasures. You, the class of 2021, are awesome. Seeing you in vour elements, full of silliness and seriousness, curiosity and boredom, is trulv wonderful. We hope that you enjoy reading these next 200 pages as much as we enjoyed putting them together.

This yearbook is dedicated to you. With love, Grace, Naiya, and Evan

Remember when you told us the story about hitting your friend with a brick? Or the rap song, or the time you got in trouble for standing on a table? We couldn’t believe it, our teacher - who made us use a ruler to draw margins on graph paper in sixth grade - was the absolute coolest. You have been a guide for our class since we met you. Whether discussing Frankenstein or our personal woes, we can always count on you for a laugh and a brighter outlook on life. You have taught us that essays must have a central thread and a “So what!” We will miss you tremendously as we continue on our journeys next year. The class of 2021 dedicates this yearbook to you in thanks for all of the funny stories, brutally honest feedback, and TikTok videos you have brought us through the years. f:'

Dear Ted, Our first day of GFS high school was also yours, although we never would have known if you hadn’t told us; it seems like you have been teaching your entire life. Your incredible investment in our learning and well-being is appreciated by all. Whether acting as a teacher, mentor, advisor, or friend, you are honest and caring. While we may only sign up for your classes to see photos of your kids, the inclusive and encouraging classroom atmosphere you create motivates all of us to succeed. We now know to “source” our readings and to follow Rule Number 5: don’t be a Jerk. Thank you for all of the time and energy you have invested in our grade, w’e are deeply grateful. Our days will not be the same without saying “Hi Ted!” in the hallways next year and receiving the Joyful response. 2

Dear Sam, The fickle finger of fate has chosen you! From chaperoning our middle school dances, to advising the bottom (better) half of the alphabet, you have been through everything with the class of 2021. We are so lucky to have you grow alongside us. You inspire learning and teach us essential life lessons, like how to write an intense love letter deserving of anyone's attention, or that love is blind and time equals money. Wherever our next English classes are, we will always remember to title our essays, Google poets’ portraits before reading their work, and be sure to use the language of the quotation in our writing. We are forever grateful for your constant imparting of wisdom and ability to make the most obscure texts come alive. Thank you for al! of it; we will miss you greatly next year.

Thank you for bringing light to each and every day! Throughout our high school careers, you have brought your infectious laugh, exceedingly friendly spirit and inspirational artwork to our lives. We cannot imagine a photo room without you in it there is no better inspiration than entering the chaotic beauty that is the third floor of Main. Yours is one of the few Zoom classes that recharges our energy, encouraging us to get up and explore the world, COVID-stricken or not. As we move forward in life, we will remember to always appreciate the unique light of the day and to “make” not “take” a photograph. We dedicate this yearbook to you in honor of all of the work you have done for past ANNOs, and all that you continue to do to incite deep thought and provoke creativity in the minds of GES students. 3

Farewells Dear Natasha, What are we going to do next year when we aren’t passing through alumni hearing the chants of a-ae-ae coming from A-3, questioning if there is a cult meeting happening? Or glancing in to see students in potato sacks, hopping ferociously to the board, fly swatter in hand? We cannot emphasize how much we are going to miss you. Thank you for all of your dedication and positive energy that you have shown towards us, whether it be as the leader of Sistahs, our 9th grade latin teacher, or as our advisor. Even though we are frustrated with Smith for stealing you, we wish you the best of luck in your return to being one of us and in your future endeavours. There is Just one question yet to be answered: can you really have more than one best friend? •V
