Professor Gates loves sharing his passion for theater and design with his students, and he’s always up for a challenging game of chess. He has put countless hours into crafting the beautiful mugs and other pottery that are displayed in the lobby of the Wesley-Black Fine Arts Center, and the ceramic gnomes guarding the offices of Science Hall – those are Professor Gates’s handiwork as well. Rita Burleson was named the School of Professional Education 2021 Faculty of Distinction. Professor Rita Burleson has been teaching English and history courses at the CCCK School of Professional Education for seven years. She enjoys teaching from a Christian worldview at CCCK by discussing the Christian influence on the formation of the United States as a positive fact. Professor Burleson’s hobbies include quilting and crocheting, and she loves to learn how other people have overcome trials in their lives. The Story Begins…. We first met Goran Medved as a student in Jerry’s General Psychology course and in the library where Nancy was the Director. At this time, we also knew him as a soccer player – so there was some natural common ground as Jerry had coached men’s soccer and we appreciated watching Goran play. Goran was an excellent student and was very disciplined in his approach to academics and life. His English was very good so we really didn’t think about him being from Croatia, although he made it clear that he was from Zagreb, the Capital of Croatia. At that time, Croatia was one of the Federal Republics of Yugoslavia under communist control. Goran had grown up an atheist and had little contact with the Christian faith. During those years Croatia was torn apart by war so we did have discussions about his concern for the safety of family and friends. Goran provided updates, as he followed the news. Eventually, almost one third of the Croatian territory was occupied and the war of independence lasted until 1995 when the Croatian army finally liberated the occupied territories. Goran poured himself into his studies and soccer to help forget about the war. He had come to Central to play for Coach David Cluphf, excelling on the pitch. During his freshman year he was a key contributor to his team’s 13-4- 2 season. The team placed runner up at the National Small College Athletic Association (NSCAA) National Tournament with players such as Matt Ball, Emir Ruiz Esparza, and Jim Post. His sophomore year, Goran led his team to a 13-6-2 season. The team was the only Central team to win the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region VI Championship, going on to Districts in St. Louis. Goran was 1st team All Region and 1st team All District. He also served the community as a volunteer coach with the McPherson Strikers Soccer Club (now McPherson City FC). To many, including us, Goran was a kind, serious, and respectful student. We always thought that he was more mature than most 18-20 year old college students. We visited with Dr. David Cluphf to get his feedback on Goran and he described Goran in much the same way: “quiet, deep and talented, humble, and calm on the surface...a Renaissance guy so to speak.” He had a lot of interests outside of soccer, including participating in the school play. Dr. Dave’s most telling comment was that Goran today was “a deep well and other people are drawing from that well” and he is not surprised by what Goran has become. Upon leaving Central, we were aware that he transferred to Southern Nazarene University to continue playing soccer and assumed he had returned to his beloved homeland of Croatia. Reconnecting…. In the fall of 2019, a mere 26 years later, we were completing a 9 month stint of living and serving missionaries/pastors in Europe and Israel. At one point in our travels we arrived in Zagreb, remembereing that Goran was from this beautiful city. We decided to see if we could meet up with Goran. We were so excited to be able to meet with him for coffee. It was during this time that we learned so much more about Goran. We had seen on social media that he was heavily involved in Christian ministry in Croatia and wanted to hear more. Here is Goran’s story in his own words: Prior to Central: Goran first came to the U.S. in the early 90’s, as part of a high school exchange program in Brownwood, TX. While he could have ended up anywhere in the US, there is special significance to Goran’s placement in Brownwood. In preparation for his time in the US, Goran sought out some help with conversational English. An Evangelical Church in Zagreb had just such a program, so he was able to meet with the leader there, who was serving as a missionary in Croatia. Eventually, the leader asked Goran where his placement in the US was. Goran responded, “Brownwood, Texas”. The leader seemed taken aback and asked again for clarification. To which Goran again said, “Brownwood, Texas. Here, I think I have the address. Yes, 3rd St, Brownwood, Texas. To which the missionary leader said, “I am from 4th St, Brownwood, Texas!” At the time, Goran just saw this as a unique coincidence, not realizing the way God was already moving on his behalf. ALUMNI Coming to Faith: After arriving in the US, the missionary from Zagreb came back home to Brownwood, and at one point invited Goran to attend church. Goran remembered, “It was an unusual experience for me, seeing people singing to God, reading the Bible, listening to a preacher. And there was something about the people, they were really nice and loving.” Even though the missionary eventually moved on, Goran continued to attend church with friends. In time, his life was impacted by the Gospel and at the age of 18 he moved from being an atheist to being baptized into the faith as a believer. Time at Central: Spiritually speaking, Goran said that his time at Central was a bit turbulent. Being new to the faith he wrestled between his developing faith and the desires of his youth. Looking back at his time Goran noted, “I realize that I was missing the knowledge and power of the Holy Spirit. The school gave us rules to live by, and they were good rules, but it was difficult to live under the rules. It is better to be filled with the Spirit and led by the Spirit. The rules cannot give life, while the Spirit gives divine life and power.” Many times as staff at Central we are unaware of our student’s stories. We try as best we can to get to know the students well but there are always some that you don’t know as well in regard to the questions where they are struggling. Also, during Goran’s years, being a two year college made it much more difficult to really establish deep relationships with students. The current four year college allows more time to work on these relationships. From Central to Croatia: Goran attended Southern Nazarene University (SNU) in Bethany, Oklahoma (1993-95) to pursue a degree in International Studies, where he graduated with honors. Similar to his time at Central, Goran played soccer at SNU, even playing for a semi-professional indoor team, Oklahoma City Slickers. It was during this time, when Goran was staying with a Christian host family, that Goran found a rekindling of his faith, and eventually responded to the call to return to his homeland as an ambassador of Christ. Upon Goran’s return to Croatia, he fulfilled his one-year mandatory army service. Though he desired to jump right into full-time ministry, he ended up working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He began ministering at his home church in Zagreb. Eventually, he was able to invest more and more time in ministry, serving over the years in numerous ministry positions such as youth pastor, assistant pastor, church planter, pastor, translator, and Bible translator. Along the way, Goran attended Zagreb Bible Institute, eventually earning a Master's Degree from Lipscomb University in Nashville. He is currently working on a Doctorate in Pauline Theology from the University of Romania. For seven years he served as the primary editor for the first c o n t e m p o r a r y translation of the Bible in Croatian, completed in 2020. It has become quite popular and is in high demand. Today, Goran is a Bible teacher, which he says is his true calling. He teaches at two evangelical seminaries as an adjunct professor and visits churches all over Croatia to preach and encourage. In his spare time he is working on some Bible teaching videos, as very few are available in the Croatian language. Goran is thankful for the love and support of his family. His uncle came to faith soon after Goran, then his parents, and aunt, all being former atheists. He is blessed with a virtuous wife, Maja, whom he had the privilege of baptizing before she and Goran began dating. Goran and Maja have three sons, Kaleb, Adam and Noa. Concluding Thoughts... Goran is a spiritual leader in his land, continuing to grow in Christian stature. We were so pleased to hear what he was doing and see his enthusiasm for working in Croatia. We saw him as a man who loves his Lord, his people and his family. Goran is a fine example of a Central alumnus who is willing to become engaged with his culture to impact others for Christ. One can never guess how God might touch a life. Goran was a good kid, but intentionally did not stick out, except perhaps on the soccer field. He was a student that was quietly present. Look at him now! By the way, Goran still plays soccer, though now it is in what he calls the veterans’ league, where players are past their prime. He enjoys playing with his dad and son - three generations playing together. Goran’s father, who is over 70, can still score goals even while playing against the younger guys. You can discover more about Goran and his ministry by emailing him at [email protected]. Central Christian College of Kansas 7

The last few years have created a very complex, and often confusing, reality for individuals and families around the world. The presence and veracity of COVID took the world by storm, and yet, in the midst of all the uncertainty and illness, healthcare professionals have stood in the gap – following the ChristCentered call to put the needs of others over the needs of self. To that end, Central honors the frontline healthcare workers, recognizing that many have shouldered the challenges and burdens of this pandemic, both at home and in the workplace. This includes our own alumni who have either matriculated to the field of healthcare or are part of our online healthcare administration program. As the pandemic unfolded, its presence presented unforeseen obstacles as hospitalizations surged, exceeding the capacity of many units. The phrase “not enough beds” reflect less on the number of beds available, but more on the number of staff available to manage individuals assigned to beds. The sheer immensity of the pandemic simply taxed both the system and those individuals associated with the system. Yet, these healthcare workers continued to provide care, many times fighting sheer exhaustion, personal illness, private loss, isolation from family and friends, and shortages of equipment. “It is harder than anyone could possibly imagine. We have nurses that are walking off the job because they are working such long and hard hours. We do not have enough healthcare workers, and patients are experiencing longer wait times and less care because of the shortage of staff. You have non-clinical, essential staff calling in sick because of COVID or other illness they are facing” said Jeremy Gonsalves (CC ’02). In many cases, healthcare workers had to bare the mantle of responsibilities that commonly fall on other individuals in the system such as comforting dying patients who were unable to have loved ones near, consoling family members, caring for sick colleagues, and listening to concerns of those who have needed procedures delayed or declined. “The stress is very real. It is on my mind all the time. I think about it at work and then think about it at home. The stress can wear a person down”, said Stephanie Wright (CC ’20). In like manner Brooke Perez shared that, “the mental health aspect has been the most challenging. It’s hard to find the energy to go to work every day and keep a positive attitude when people around you are dying every day. As a nurse I have really had to learn to put my own feelings aside to help patients & their family members cope with everything that is happening to them” Jeremy Gonsalves stated, “I think the most challenging part of this whole pandemic has been watching the family of the loved ones not be able to spend the last moments with those suffering from COVID. It is very hard to tell them that they cannot see their family members pass away or be in the room with them.” Thankfully, many of our alumni have been able to find strength in their faith. Stephanie Wright (CC ’22) shared “It is with faith that I have moved through the pandemic. Without the strength given me through Christ I would not have been able to come through this.” She also suggested that this is a time for “showing each other kindness and compassion…None of us can know what the other is going through. Be an example of Christian love in a world that needs it now more than ever. This same perspective was shared by current student Laura Robinson who expressed that everyone is navigating through a challenging time. We all deserve a little more grace and understanding. Who knows, you may be thanking a fellow alumni in the process! HEALTHCARE IN A COVID WORLD JOIN US AS WE CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR ALL OF OUR ALUMNI WHO SERVE IN THE HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY! “CENTRAL HONORS THE FRONTLINE HEALTHCARE WORKERS, RECOGNIZING THAT MANY HAVE SHOULDERED THE CHALLENGES AND BURDENS OF THIS PANDEMIC...” 8 Central Christian College of Kansas

THANK YOU HEALTHCARE HEROES!

Princeton Theological Seminary Professor and Pastor of Change Church Dr. Dharius Daniels said, “the best investment anyone can make is an investment in oneself because that investment helps produce purpose, and purpose is always an answer to a problem!” When students decide to take a pedagogical leap into advancing their education, they understand that an education is one of the most significant investments they could make. They understand that making this step toward an education requires a significant financial and time investment, not to mention a compete shift from the world they know. Students will be placed into a melting pot with new and different individuals who will help challenge their belief systems, values, and worldviews. The vision statement of Central states that it “aspires to provide a transformative educational experience rooted in Christ and focused on providing a ChristCentered Education for Character, to any person desiring to become a faithful steward of heart, mind, soul, and strength.” In keeping with this vision, I believe that Central makes a unique investment into its students. Perhaps some would expect me to solely focus on the spiritual investment that Central produces, which makes sense – it is a Christian College after all. Be that as it may, the true value of the Central Experience is realized not just in the transformation of the soul, but in the transformation of the whole person with an intentional focus on how that individual can in turn transform others. It is this focus on the common good – the good of any person for the good of every person. As I reflect on my time at Central, and what it embedded in me, I reflect on some essential traits that describe this internal transformative work, which now allows me to invest in the common good. Soul: If nothing else can be said about Central, it is clear they are committed to spiritual formation. They embrace the truth that revelation comes in the context of a relationship with Jesus Christ. This relationship provides for the growth of spiritual intelligence, giving students the opportunity to engage gifts and talents that allow them to do the Lord’s work. In this way, transformation begins in the soul, working its way through the whole self. More importantly, this transformation is not just about self. There are versions of spiritualty that are solely focused on the redemption of self, but miss our call to be tools of reconciliation and redemption for any person – every person. Heart: A unique aspect of Central is its intentional focus on the development of integrity within the context of collaborative engagement. It takes guts for a young black person to uproot and move to a small mid-western community in Kansas. I have always appreciated that Central is able to embrace any person, providing space to experience as together we are challenged to transform our prejudices and preconceptions in order to pursue a common good. I can still remember sitting in my first year sociology course, hearing Dr. “Charlie” saying, “The most important person you will ever lead is yourself!” which, of course, was followed by a regular challenge to critically engage myself, taking responsibility to allow transformation to occur. A key message, spoken in word and deed by all members of the Central community asserts “Nothing runs the way it’s supposed to until you, the student, run yourself well.” That is a life lesson that applies far beyond our studies, but can apply to our vocations, families, churches, and societies. Thankfully, the transformation of mind, rooted in Christ, has helped many persons engage the self-leadership needed to achieve compelling outcomes – focused on the common good. Strength: Mental health professionals have highlighted the importance of developing strong emotional intelligence, often expressed through self-awareness, resiliency, and stability. When I came to Central, I was a hot-headed introvert with an attitude problem. In time, as transformative work of God, working through the Central Experience, helped me gain the courage and grit needed to lead small groups, engage others, and become a positive force. Many students have come through the doors of Central, many of us with emotional, social, socio-economic, even spiritual deficits. Thankfully, CCCK’s willingness to embrace any person means that many of us also leave transformed, with a heightened level of competence, level-headedness, and lucidity. BY LOUIS COLLINS TRANSFORMATION “THE TRUE VALUE OF THE CENTRAL EXPERIENCE IS REALIZED NOT JUST IN THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE SOUL” 10 Central Christian College of Kansas

Intentionality This is not by accident. It is memorialized in its vision and embedded in its people. It is by design and intentional. While other faith-based institutions may market versions of what we have talked about here, it is the intentionality of what Central does – and its purpose – that makes it different. Central alone has the audacity to deliberately pursue transformation, inviting any person to experience Christ, transforming the seeker into an agent of redemption – for the common good. What does this transformation look like? Well, reflecting on who I know – I would suggest it looks like a punk kid like Cole Ouren (CC ’07) who is now serving on a Division I coaching staff – representing Christ in his community. It looks like C.J. Luckey (CC ’10) a secular hip hop artist before attending Central, who is now celebrating with thousands of students through his positive messaging and Christian rap genre. Transformation looks like Rachel Graves (CC ’12) who, during the pandemic, was on the front lines as a nurse tending to the masses. It looks like a business-savvy industrialist like Melvin Sanders (CC ’05) or legal professional like Ola Odeyemi (CC ’10). Transformation looks like Heath and Jamie Whitehouse (CC ’09) and Jacob and Bobbie Kaufman (CC ’03 & CC ’05) who stay on to serve Central Christian, even when opportunities could easily take them elsewhere. Transformation looks like Chelsea Green (CC ’08) who is taking Houston, Texas, by storm and empowering women all over the state. It’s Aaron Miller (CC ’14) who now uses his skills to train various NBA basketball players. Transformation is seen in the life of an overcomer like Tony Romero (CC ’04) who is now the College’s most winning coach – mentoring young men to experience the same transformative work. It is found in the story of Goran Medved (CC ’93) who came to just play soccer, but now translates the Word of God into his native tongue – helping to transform those lives. Transformation looks like my own story, beating poverty to pursue a calling as a Christian speaker and author. I think you get it by now – Central is about transformation. It doesn’t just do good work. It produces good work – for the common good, rooted in Christ, providing a transformative educational experience, to any student desiring to become a faithful steward of heart, mind, soul, and strength. Louis Collins Pastor Louis Collins is a native of Los Angeles, CA. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology in 2008 at Central Christian College, McPherson KS. Everyone has a story. Some stories may be a mix of challenges, joy and sadness, learning and loving while others may be a mixture of obstacles, kindness, grief and happiness as well as loving. Whatever the story, there is one common theme, and that is the Grace of God. Al Henrion (CC ’63) came to Central from Kansas City, attending first the High School, then graduating from the College with his Associate Degree in 1963. In 1971 he received his Master’s Degree in Industrial Technology from Central Michigan University and taught in the Michigan School System for 34 years. During those years, Al worked with the State of Michigan Education Department and was elected twice as the President of the Michigan Industrial Education Society. Not too bad for a boy from Kansas City, who had the love and support from family and friends, right? STOP. This story needs to start over…. Al Henrion was not your typical 5 year old. In fact, he could be found living in a tent with his parents and five siblings in Kansas City. They were poor and routinely ridiculed by those around them. When his father became sick, his mother realized she could not take care of the children. With that reality, she dropped them off at the Kansas City Free Methodist Children’s Home and that is where Al grew up. Although safe with a roof over their heads, the Henrion boys were known at school as “those kids.” Al was consistently ridiculed and told he would never amount to anything. So, in 1961, because of the connection between the Free Methodist Church and the Children’s Home, Al spent his Junior and Senior year attending Central High School with his brother and then continued on to graduate from the College with his Associate Degree in 1963. In the years following Al’s graduation, he stayed in McPherson and became involved in local sports as a basketball referee. It was while refereeing a game at Central in the North Gym that Al met his future wife, Jody Reid (CC ’65), a cheerleader for Central. The rest is history as they were married in 1965 and moved to Michigan, raised their family and Al settled into his career as an educator teaching vocational studies such as foundry, machine shop, and welding, metal fabrication, and even applied physics. Al was well known in his field and played a key role in developing and writing the first Industrial Technology Standards and Benchmarks for the state of Michigan. In addition to teaching, Al spent over 37 years in the Michigan National Guard. In 1992 he became a Command Sgt. Major of Operations and Training, receiving over twenty awards and medals for his outstanding service and contributions. For the next fifty years Al was busy with work and family, and he didn’t think about nor was he interested in anything to do with Central. He retired from teaching in 2000, from the Michigan National Guard in 2001 and then he and Jody began their stained glass business, A & J Stained Glass. It was around this time that God intervened, using the death of Al’s younger brother, George Henrion (CC ’65), to re-connect Al with Central. His brother loved Central and after he passed, Al and his two sisters discovered that George had left his insurance policy to them. As he and Jody prayed about what to do, they came to the same conclusion - they did not want to benefit from George’s death so as Al puts it, “the Lord led our hearts and we knew it was time to get back to Central.” However with that conclusion, little did Al know God’s grace, the power of forgiveness, serving others and giving of one’s self would move in his heart and begin a new chapter in his life. It began with the clock tower… ENGAGED IN SERVICE 12 Central Christian College of Kansas

At the same time God was moving in Al’s heart, Central was undertaking a new campus project, the M. B. Miller Heritage Plaza. The Plaza was to have a new campus landmark, the Clock Tower, and by Al and Jody funding the clocks and Al using his skill and talents creating the Tiger logo seen on the Clock Tower, the new landmark on campus became a reality. Not long after completion, the Plaza was dedicated. When Al was attending the ceremony on campus, David Ferrell, (CC ’75) introduced Al to Naomi Ullum, Director of the Art Department. As they visited, Naomi discovered that Al and Jody owned a stained glass studio. It just so happened that she had been praying that the Lord would bring someone to Central that could begin a stained glass program. So there it was, clear direction from the Lord for both Al and Jody. In 2011, Al not only began teaching a class in stained glass, but contributed to that class from the profits of their business. It is with their business profits that he and Jody continue giving back and being of service to AWARDS Michigan Master Teacher for Industrial Technology International Master Teacher for Industrial Technology from the American Industrial Arts Association Michigan Industrial and Technology Award - State of Michigan Program of the Year Outstanding Military Personnel from Secretary of Defense under the Bush Administration Legion of Merit Award Meritorious Service Medal (highest Award given to Military Personnel) To all who read his story, Al says “Give God the credit. Don’t pay attention to criticism, but rather give to others the unconditional love as God loves us. Forgive, rather than harboring resentment. Serve others and live for the Lord. Doing that will open up your heart and bring joy that is beyond understanding” Central. In fact, Al has worked on every building on campus; such as Greer Auditorium, the Art Studio, all of the athletic fields, and the Broadhurst Student Center (just to name a few). He was in charge of, and did most of the work, to completely transform an old laundromat off-campus on Kansas Avenue in McPherson to a complete, fully equipped Wrestling Center for the students.
