What is Silicon Valley Reads? Mission To encourage reading and discussion of selected books as a way to open community dialogue about provocative themes relevant to our region.

Vision As a result of reading the same book(s) and engaging in discussion, the diverse Silicon Valley community experiences new perspectives and understanding of important issues and values.

Goals ● Promote reading, literacy, and the appreciation of literature among all members of the community including non-traditional readers and those with limited literacy skills ● Build community through open and lively dialogues about the ideas and themes of a selected book ● Support education and lifelong learning, critical for Silicon Valley to maintain its leadership in creativity and innovation Silicon Valley Reads is a community engagement program that features books and an annual theme to bring people together by providing more than 100 free, public events each year in February and March. Events for all ages include author talks, book clubs, art/music events, community activities, arts and crafts, movies, and creative events or activities based on the theme each year. The 2023 season signifies the 20th Anniversary of Silicon Valley Reads! It has been an inspiring and dynamic two-decade journey as Silicon Valley Reads identified themes and books that resonated with the community at the time. Over the last two years, when the world experienced a global pandemic, Silicon Valley Reads gave people hope for the future with themes like “Connecting” and “The Power of Kindness, Resilience and Hope.” Our community has persevered and is ready to move forward. For 2023, Silicon Valley Reads will set off on a “Journey to New Beginnings.”

A heartfelt picture book based on the author-illustrator's own experiences, about a boy who moves to the U.S. mainland from Puerto Rico and realizes that New York City might have more in common with San Juan than he initially thought. Educator Resources A young immigrant girl joins her aunt and uncle in a new country that is unfamiliar to her. She struggles with loneliness, with a fierce longing for the culture and familiarity of home, until one day, her aunt takes her on a walk. As the duo strolls through their city park, the girl's aunt begins to tell her an old myth, and a story within the story begins. Educator Resources Heartbreak, hope, and gentle humor exist together in this graphic novel about a childhood spent waiting, and a young man who is able to create a sense of family and home in the most difficult of settings. It's an intimate, important, unforgettable look at the day-to-day life of a refugee, as told to New York Times bestselling author/artist Victoria Jamieson by Omar Mohamed, the Somali man who lived the story. Educator Resources At home, she is a careful daughter, living within her mother’s narrow expectations, in her rising-soccer-star brother’s shadow, and under the abusive rule of her short-tempered father. On the field, she is La Furia, a powerhouse of skill and talent. Filled with authentic details and the textures of day-to-day life in Argentina, heart-soaring romance, and breathless action on the pitch, Furia is the story of a girl’s journey to make her life her own. “But we are not one star. We are millions. Not one background, but millions. To the untrained eye, the night sky is a scattering of stars, a chaos of light and dark across the universe. And yet, the stars are not lost. They form patterns. Constellations. If you know how to look, there are stories woven into the very essence of stars. Be like a star. Shine your light. Shine your story. For stories will lead us home.”
