Q: What can you infer from your selected source about the experiences of a member from your selected community? Explain your answer. You should only write a maximum of 150 words in this segment. I can infer from the source that the Chinese community went through education with other races. The source shows many different students of different races in one class group photo. This tells us that the Chinese mixed with other races often to take lessons. The strict and proper attire and seating/standing arrangement with no facial expressions on their faces shows that the people are living in acceptance - they are not feeling happy nor upset that they have to mix with other races. They just followed what the Japanese said. From contextual knowledge, locals of Syonan-to were forced to learn Japanese as part of imposing the culture. The source mentions that they “baked it [bread] in the sun, keep it. So whenever one needs to eat, just fry it with the oil, palm oil or whatever, coconut oil.” This tells us that the Chinese had to go through much trouble just to preserve their food through the sun so that it would be easier to eat it later on. Even later, they randomly dump in any oil they could find. They could not get staple food like real bread. “not pure flour, they were from tapioca mixed with sago flour.” and rubber-like. The bread was made of a weird combination of flour, and the Chinese would want to eat something that's described as inedible. - they went to extreme measures to survive. From contextual knowledge, there was a severe shortage of food from the war disruptions.
