Health Note
During Men’s Health Month, the Chronic Disease Prevention Program is working to raise awareness of men’s health and lifestyle choices, because most men, do little to improve their health. Very much like moms, dads have many things to worry about too. They worry about doing well at work or at school and about caring and providing a good life for their families. However, when the worry becomes too much and stress levels are overwhelming, this can lead to poor decisions and bad habits, such as bad diets, smoking or drinking too much, trouble sleeping, trouble expressing emotions or frustration, and other risky behaviors. Compared to women, men are more likely to: • Smoke • Drink alcohol • Make unhealthy or risky choices • Put off regular checkups and medical care A healthy lifestyle is possible for everyone, men and women, but it will take a village! It is expected that men, at retiring age, will be in much poorer health than women. For anyone looking to avoid being part of this statistic, it’s important to take action. No matter your age, schedule your check-ups and see your doctor regularly. Take the first step and schedule your first appointment today! Statistics show that men are victims of over 92% of all workplace deaths. Safety and healthy habits work together to keep you well. Remember to use protective gear and to follow workplace guidelines. It’s also important to eat well and take rest periods. Pack healthy lunch options, eat meals on a regular schedule and take advantage of your break periods to go out for a walk or to get some fresh air. Also, be a safe driver and avoid distractions. Using a cell phone or eating while driving increases the risk of accidents. In almost 1 out of every 5 accidents (17%) where there were injuries, were caused by a distracted driver. Stay safe and pave a healthy road ahead for your boys and children by becoming a good role model. To get the whole family involved, you can start by visiting a fun event, such as a community health fair. It’s a great way for the family to learn more about health and wellness to help the dads and boys in the family. For example, visit the Men’s Health Fair coming up on June 25th at the Ventura College Marketplace, from 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Support efforts that encourage boys to grow up to be healthy men like their dads!
