The Texas Stars edged out the Manitoba Moose for a 3-2 win Wednesday night at the H-E-B Center at Cedar Park. The Moose scored the first goal at 1:56 when Parker Ford cleaned up a rebound initially shot by Leon Gawanke. No more than 19 seconds later, Ben Gleason fired a shot that eyed the top-right corner behind Evan Cormier and tied the game 1-1. Then at the 3:23 mark, Dominic Toninato rolled over a shot near the front of the goal and floated it in to reclaim a 2-1 lead. The second period saw the Stars score twice to take the lead for good. Marian Studenic tied the game 2-2 when he capitalized on an open-net rebound chance at 4:26 after Curtis McKenzie drove the net off the right wall. Texas took the lead with 1:09 left in the stanza when a shot by Rhett Gardner glanced off Riley Tufte and in to make it 3-2. Remi Poirier stymied the Moose the rest of the night, making 12 third-period saves that helped secure a 3-2 victory and kept Texas in the top spot in the AHL’s Central Division. While improving to 9-4-2 on the season with the win, Poirier turned aside 32 of 34 shots in the contest.
PLAYER SPOTLIGHT
Riley Tufte claimed first-star honors last time out in the Stars’ 3-2 victory over the Manitoba Moose Wednesday night. The Coon Rapids, Minn., native scored the eventual gamewinning goal and also provided an assist in the contest to improve to five points (4-1=5) in his last five games. In 61 games played this season, the left-shot winger has set new single-season highs for goals (19), assists (16), points (35) and shots (120). Tufte has played a strong two-way game this season that has seen him earn a plus-25 rating, which ranks fourth on the Stars and tied for ninth in the AHL as well as tied for third among the league’s forwards this season.

QUICK STATS
PUSH FOR THE POSTSEASON
Streaks
The Texas Stars clinched their ninth postseason berth in franchise history two weeks ago by earning a point in a 2-1 overtime loss hosting the San Jose Barracuda (Mar. 31). It marks back-to-back seasons securing a spot in the Calder Cup Playoffs. Last season, Texas clinched the final playoff spot in the division on April 26 with a 4-2 win over the Manitoba Moose in their season finale up in Winnipeg. The Stars have now managed to clinch a playoff spot during March three times (2010, 2014 and 2023). After claiming a two-game road sweep against the Tucson Roadrunners last weekend, Texas secured at least a second seed in the Cental Division and currently sit one points away from clinching a third division crown in franchise history with a pair of games left to play.
THE FINAL COUNTDOWN
Entering the final weekend of the regular season, the Stars are locked in a two-team race for a division title. With 90 points so far, Texas currently leads the Central Division by one point over Milwaukee (89). The Stars’ Magic Number to clinch a divisional title now sits at one point after picking up a 3-2 win over Manitoba Wednesday night in Cedar Park, combined with Milwaukee’s 5-4 overtime loss Friday against Chicago. Texas can clinch the division title with a win or overtime/shootout loss in either Saturday or Sunday’s games against Iowa, or a Milwaukee loss of any kind Sunday against Rockford. The Stars have won their division twice in franchise history, capturing the South Division in 2012-13 and the West Division in 2013-14, with the latter resulting in an eventual Calder Cup Championship.
5 - Curtis McKenzie is on a five-game point streak (2-5=7) after an assist Apr. 12 vs MB. 5 - Marian Studenic rides a five-game point streak (4-2=6) after scoring Apr. 12 vs MB. 3 - Remi Poirier has won his last three starts posting a 2.57 GAA since Apr. 1 vs SJ. 3 - Ryan Shea is on a three-game point streak (0-4=4) after an assist Apr. 12 vs MB. 2 - Rhhett Gardner carries a two-game point streak (0-2=2) after picking up an assist in back to back games.
EVERYTHING IS BIGGER IN TEXAS
Texas has been on an offensive tear since the start of April. In five games since the start of the month, the Stars have outscored their opposition 27-18 and grasp a 4-1 record throughout the stretch. Mavrik Bourque has led the charge with seven of the Stars’ 27 tallies, while Marian Studenic and Riley Tufte are tied for second on the team with four goals each in April. Tuesday’s 7-5 loss to the Manitoba Moose matched a season-high of seven goals against for the Stars. Additionally, it was a new high for goals against at home, breaking the previous mark of six which has occurred twice in Cedar Park. The only other time Texas surrendered seven goals in a game this season was back on Nov. 23 at Rockford (7-2 L). On a lighter note, the Stars have prevailed by scoring a season-high seven goals three times this year, including twice at home and once on the road. Texas recently scored seven in back-to-back wins vs. San Jose (7-2, Apr. 1) and at Tucson (7-3, Apr. 7).
CHASING HI(STAR)Y
Multiple Texas Stars franchise records have already been captured by this year’s Stars team. For starters, Curtis McKenzie already set a franchise record for career penalty minutes. Earlier this season, McKenzie passed Luke Gazdic’s 447 career PIMs and the captain is now up to 507 PIMs in a Texas sweater. With his overtime goal Mar. 25, Riley Barber set a new franchise record for game-winning goals (8), passing Greg Rallo’s total from the 2010-11 season. The goal was also Barber’s 30th of the season, making him just the sixth player in team history to score 30 or more goals in a single season, joining Matt Fraser (37, 2011-12), Fraser (33, 2012-13), Travis Morin and Colton Sceviour (32, 2014-15), and Joel L’Esperance (30, 2018-19). He upped his total to 32 goals on the season Tuesday night in the Stars’ 7-5 loss to the Moose by scoring twice. Rallo also holds the team’s record for shots on goal in a single season (254, 2010-11). Barber is closing in on that record too, as he checks in at tied for second in the league with 241, just 13 shy of Rallo’s mark with two games remaining. The next record most likely to fall is the team’s plus-minus rating in a single season, held by current Seattle Kraken defenseman Jamie Oleksiak, who registered a plus-26 with Texas in 2014-15. Defensemen Ryan Shea (plus-38) and Alex Petrovic (plus-37) currently rank first and second in the entire league in that category as they are both are on pace to smash Oleksiak’s record.
KING OF THE CORN
With two games to go, the Iowa Wild (76) are in pursuit of one of the final two playoff spots to come out of the AHL’s Central Division. They are in a tight race with the Rockford IceHogs (75) and Chicago Wolves (72), who each have a game in hand on the Wild, on their heels. After prevailing 3-2 in overtime on the road at Chicago last Saturday, the Wild fell 3-1 hosting Milwaukee Wednesday in Des Moines.
