LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Parishioners, As followers of Jesus, we believe his way of life is leading us to the heavenly Jerusalem, just as King Cyrus in today's First Reading led the Jews back to their earthly Jerusalem - and this is the source of our joy. But not all the Jews returned to their homeland, even when they could, because not all of them had believed the prophets, as today's Psalm implies. Many of them "forgot about Jerusalem" and began placing their hopes in the wealth, power, and pleasures of Babylon. After all, it seemed impossible to restore Jerusalem. It was much easier and more reasonable to accept the daily realities of life in a pagan culture, to compromise with it, to stop waiting for God to fulfill his promises, to take things into their own hands. Those who chose this path had some success and pleasure in life, but they lost their true identity; they lost their opportunity to experience the full, redeeming power of God's love.

We are daily tempted to do the same thing; to become impatient with God and seek our happiness outside of friendship with Christ, forgetting about the heavenly Jerusalem. This is why today's Gospel says that in order to experience everlasting life we have to "believe” in Jesus. We, who are exiled in a fallen world, have to trust God and follow his commands, even though at times it would be easier to live like a Babylonian pagan, like everyone else around us. We do that by living as Christ would have us live: putting our time, talents, and treasure at the service of God and neighbor, no matter the cost. As Jesus renews his promise to us in this holy Mass, let's thank him for the growing joy his friendship gives us now, and the complete joy he promises for later, and let's ask him for the grace to follow him more and more closely as we make our way out of the exile of Lent and into the full daylight of Easter. 4th Sunday of Lent - That we may show our gratitude for Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice by generously making sacrifices in our own lives. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son…”– (John 3:16) Of all the wonderful gifts that God has given to us, the gift of His own Son is truly the greatest. How can we ever thank God for a gift like that? God does not ask us to sacrifice our own precious firstborn, but He does ask that we be generous in making some sacrifices for Him.

FORTH SUNDAY OF LENT CUARTO DOMINGO DE CUARESMA CARTA DE NUESTRO PÁRROCO Queridos Feligreses: Como seguidores de Jesús, creemos que su modo de vida nos conduce a la Jerusalén celestial, asi como el Rey Ciro, en la Primera Lectura de hoy, hizo con los judíos llevándolos a su Jerusalén terrenal - y ésta es la fuente de nuestra alegría. Pero no todos los judíos regresaron a su patria, aún cuando pudieron hacerlo, porque no todos habían creído a los profetas, como indica el Salmo de hoy. Muchos de ellos "se olvidaron de Jerusalén" y comenzaron a poner sus esperanzas en la riqueza, poder y placeres de Babilonia. Después de todo, parecía imposible restaurar Jerusalén. Era mucho más fácil y más razonables aceptar la realidad de la vida cotidiana en una cultura pagana, dejar de esperar que Dios cumpliera sus promesas y hacerse cargo de sus propias vidas. Aquellos que escogieron este camino tuvieron algo de éxito y placer en sus vidas, pero perdieron su identidad verdadera; perdieron su oportunidad de experimentar la totalidad, de redimir el poder del amor de Dios.

Nosotros, que estamos exiliados en un mundo caído, tenemos que confiar en Dios y seguir sus órdenes aunque a veces sería más fácil vivir como los paganos babilónicos, como todo el mundo que nos rodea. No desperdiciemos nuestra oportunidad y vivamos como Cristo quiere que vivamos. Pongamos nuestro tiempo, talento y tesoro al servicio de Dios y de nuestrol prójimo sin importar el precio. iJesús renueva su promesa con nosotros en ésta Santa Misa y en todas las Misas! Agradezcámosle a El por la creciente alegría que nos da su amistad ahora y por el gozo completo que nos promete en el futuro y pidámosle la gracia de seguirlo más de cerca cada dia al acercarnos a la salida del exilio de la Cuaresma y entrar a la plenitud de la Pascua de Resurrección. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS - That we may learn to turn away from the false idols of our society – those visible and invisible. “You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything…” (Exodus 20:4). How many “gods” do you put before God? “Idols” do not always take the shape of physical things, things we can touch and feel. Those are easy to recognize.
