LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Parishioners, As Americans we are often very proud to be independent, but that brings along with it the danger of carrying it to extremes. The radical individualism so ingrained in our culture makes it hard for us to trust God. This individualism makes us think that we need to earn other people's love by our achievements and behavior. And if we fail to make the grade (which happens sooner or later), we resent the people we were trying to please. This emotional pattern sometimes gets transferred into our relationship with God. We think that he will reject us unless we perform up to a certain level. But this attitude is not Christian, and it severely undermines our ability to trust God. God's love for us doesn't depend on our performance; it is pure, generous, and unconditional. A Christian's trust is based on God's goodness, not our tiny achievements.

St Francis de Sales has a wonderful image that illustrates how we should trust in this God who has done so much to gain our trust. He tells us to think of the little children who go on a walk with their dad. With one hand they hold fast to their father, and with the other hand they pick berries, or play with a stick, or throw stones in the pond. If we handle the goods, affairs, and problems of this world with one hand, we must always hold fast with the other to our heavenly Father's hand. We should look up at him from time to time to see if we are pleasing him. We do this through prayer and the sacraments, and through obeying his commandments and the teachings of his Church. Above all, we should never let go of his hand by direct disobedience to his will or laziness in our spiritual lives. It's foolish to think that with two hands we can gather more berries - we will only get lost, injured, or kidnapped. Neither are we as St. Jerome Parish independent of the Archdiocese. At this time of year we are asked to help fund many of the support services too big for any parish. This happens through the DSF Diocesan Services Fund. Some of you have already responded with a pledge, many others still have not. Please do so right away by making and turning in your 2015 pledge, so we can turn our attention to other matters of greater importance. EARLY AND EVERYONE 2015. Thank you!

Fr Dan STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS - 2nd Sunday of Lent: That we may answer, “Here I am, Lord,” whenever, wherever and however God calls us to serve Him. “’Here I am!’ he answered.” – (Genesis 22:11). It is easy to say, “Here I am, Lord,” when we are kneeling in church. Can we just as easily answer, “Here I am, Lord,” when we go home, when a neighbor needs our help, when a fellow parishioner asks us to join a committee, or when a letter asks for our financial help? These are often exactly the places where Jesus calls us to be.

MISSION IS ON THE NEW EVANGELIZATION.

Pope Francis tells us our theme: “An evangelizer must never look like someone who has just come back from a funeral! Let us recover and deepen our enthusiasm, that delightful and comforting joy of evangelizing, even when it is in tears that we must sow. And may the world of our time, which is searching, sometimes with anguish, sometimes with hope, be enabled to receive the good news not from evangelizers who are dejected, discouraged, impatient or anxious, but from ministers of the Gospel whose lives glow with fervor, who have first received the joy of Christ”. None of us should be dour, discontented and dissatisfied, for “a gloomy disciple is a disciple of gloom”. (Cont. on Page 7).

CARTA DE NUESTRO PÁRROCO Queridos Feligreses: Lo estadounidenses a menudo somos muy orgullosos de ser independientes, pero eso siempre conlleva el peligro de llevarlo a los extremos. El individualismo radical tan arraigado en nuestra cultura hace difícil que confiemos en Dios. Este individualismo nos hace pensar que tenemos que ganar el amor de los demás por medio de nuestros logros y comportamiento. Y si somos capaces de hacerlo (que pasa tarde o temprano), resentimos que la gente no nos agradezca el favor. Este patrón emocional a veces se transfiere a nuestra relación con Dios. Creemos que El nos rechazará a menos que nos comportemos a un cierto nivel. Pero esta actitud no es Cristiana; socava seriamente nuestra capacidad de confiar en Dios. El amor de Dios por nosotros no depende de nuestro desempeño; es incondicional, puro y generoso. La confianza de un Cristiano se basa en la bondad de Dios, no en nuestros pequeños logros. San Francisco de Sales nos da una maravillosa imagen que ilustra cómo debemos confiar en ese Dios que ha hecho mucho para ganar nuestra confianza. Nos dice que piensa en los niños que van a dar un paseo con su papá. Con una sola mano sostienen fuertemente la su padre, y con la otra mano recogen bayas, juegan con un palo o tiran piedras en el estanque. Si manejamos los bienes, asuntos y problemas de este mundo con una sola mano, siempre debemos mantener la otra mano asida con fuerza a la de Nuestro Padre Celestial. Deberíamos voltear hacia arriba, a mirarlo de vez en cuando, para asegurarnos que nuestro comportamiento le agrada. Hacemos esto a través de la oración y los Sacramentos, obedeciendo sus Mandamientos y las enseñanzas de su Iglesia. Por encima de todo, nunca deberíamos soltar su mano, ya sea por la desobediencia directa a su voluntad o por la pereza en nuestra vida espiritual. Es una tontería pensar que con las dos manos podemos reunir más bayas - sólo conseguiremos perdernos, herirnos o arriesgarnos a ser secuestrados.

REFLEXION SOBRE LAS ESCRITURAS - 2o Domingo de Cuaresma: Para que respondamos "Aquí estoy, Señor" cuando sea, donde sea, y como sea que Dios nos llame a servirlo. “'Aquí estoy', respondió.” – (GenesisS 22:11). Es fácil decir "Aquí estoy, Señor" cuando nos arrodillamos en la iglesia. ¿Podremos responder así de fácil "Aquí estoy, Señor" cuando vamos a casa, cuando el prójimo necesita de nuestra ayuda, cuando un compañero de la parroquia nos pide que pertenezcamos a un comité, o cuando nos llega una carta pidiendo ayuda económica? Estos son algunos de los momentos en que Jesús hace el llamado.

Tampoco San Jerónimo, como parroquia, es independiente de la Arquidiócesis. En esta época del año se nos pide ayudar a financiar muchos de los servicios de apoyo que son demasiado grandes para cualquier parroquia. Esto sucede a través del Fondo de Servicios Diocesanos (DSF). Algunos de ustedes ya han respondido con una promesa, muchos otros todavía no lo han hecho. Por favor hágalo lo mas pronto posible: decídase a hacer su promesa de ayuda para el 2015. Una vez hecho esto podremos hacernos cargo de otros. PRONTO Y TODOS hagámos nuestra promesa al DSF 2015. iMuchas Gracias! Padre Dan

LA CUARESMA - En los primeros años de la Iglesia, la duración de la Cuaresma variaba. Finalmente alrededor del siglo IV se fijó su duración en 40 días. Es decir, que ésta comenzaba seis semanas antes del domingo de Pascua. Por tanto, un domingo llamado, precisamente, domingo de cuadragésima. En los siglos VI-VII cobró gran importancia el ayuno como práctica cuaresmal, presentándose un inconveniente: desde los orígenes nunca se ayunó en domingo por ser día de fiesta, la celebración del Día del Señor. ¿Cómo hacer entonces para respetar el domingo y, a la vez, tener cuarenta días efectivos de ayuno durante la cuaresma? Para resolver este asunto, en el siglo VII, se agregaron cuatro días más a la cuaresma, antes del primer domingo, estableciendo los cuarenta días de ayuno, para imitar el ayuno de Cristo en el desierto. (Si uno cuenta los días que van del Miércoles de Ceniza al Sábado Santo y le resta los seis domingos, le dará exactamente cuarenta). Así la Iglesia empezó la costumbre de iniciar la Cuaresma con el Miércoles de Ceniza.

ADULT CONFIRMATION CLASSES IN ST. JEROME will begin on Wednesday, March 11, at 7 pm in the St. Jerome School Library. They will continue on Wednesday Evenings through May 13. This class is open to any baptized Catholic, age 18 and up, who has received their First Communion. They must be living a single life, or, if married, married in the Catholic Church.
