LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR

I give you a new commandment, says the Lord: love one another as I have loved you.

Dear Parishioners, Sometimes letting God be our Savior means putting up with misunderstanding or ridicule. It is not always popular to seek approval from Jesus Christ instead of from the local gossip columnist. St. Maria Cresciencia Hoss learned this lesson the hard way. She lived in the 1700s in Bavaria, today's southern Germany. At an early age she felt called to give her life completely to Jesus. But her family was poor, so she had no dowry, and entrance into convents in those days required dowries (just as marriage did). The superiors refused to admit her, but she persisted in her efforts. Finally, the town's mayor convinced them to let Maria join their community, even without a dowry. You can imagine how they welcomed her - not at all. She was ostracized, made fun of, and given all the most unpleasant jobs. It would have been easy for her to give up. But she knew Jesus wanted here there, and she wanted only to please him, her Lord and Savior. So she not only endured her sisters' mistreatment, but she actually used it to grow in intimacy with Christ. She learned to find more and more comfort in his love, because precarious human comforts were less and less available. She responded to verbal abuse with patience, and to disdain with kindness, year after year after year. Eventually, the other nuns realized she had brought to their convent a spiritual dowry much more valuable than anything material: holiness. They began to respect and revere her. Eventually she was elected superior of the community, a responsibility she carried out with remarkable wisdom, to the benefit of all those sisters who had spent the previous decades ridiculing her. It's not always easy to follow God as Lord and Savior instead of trying to treat him like a consultant, but it's always well worth our while.

This is what Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta meant when she said, "Holiness does not consist in doing extraordinary things. It consists in accepting, with a smile, what Jesus sends us. It consists in accepting and following the will of God." Fr Dan

OUR GIFTS TO GOD - In the Gospel, Jesus gives His disciples - and us - a new commandment: “Love one another.” Good stewards who spend their time and talents in service to others are well on their way to fulfilling this commandment.

P.S. Don’t forget your DSF pledge! Let’s everyone join in this effort to pledge. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS- That we may joyfully bring our first fruits to the Lord, sharing our time, talent and treasure out of gratitude for all the blessings that God has given us. “I have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you, O Lord, have given to me.” (Deuteronomy 26:10). This simple line from the Old Testament presents us with two challenges. First, do we bring God our first fruits – the best that we have to offer? Regarding our gifts of time, talent and treasure, do we give God our “first fruits” or what is leftover? Second, do we remember that everything we have has been given to us by God? We brought nothing into this world and we can take nothing from it. So why not share what we have while we are here?

FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT QUINTO DOMINGO DE CUARESMA CARTA DE NUESTRO PÁRROCO Queridos Feligreses: ¿ESTÁS HACIENDO PLANES PARA ASISTIR AL ENCUENTRO MUNDIAL DE FAMILIAS EN FILADELFIA y acompañar al Papa Francisco?

¡Gracias!

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS - That we may learn to turn away from the false idols of our society – those visible and invisible. “You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything…” (Exodus 20:4). How many “gods” do you put before God? “Idols” do not always take the shape of physical things, things we can touch and feel. Those are easy to recognize. Many times they take the form of things we cannot touch and are much harder to spot - pride, power, ego, comfort or health. RESPECT LIFE CORNER - Some will maintain that it is not really

possible to overcome the culture of death or to stop the advance of abortion, euthanasia, and other forms of violence. But if we are to celebrate the paschal mystery with mind and heart renewed, and are to hear the message, "See, I am doing something new," then we are called to believe that it really is possible - and we are called to use our gifts and energy to make it real. DON’T MISS OUT ON THIS EVENT! – It’s the best bargains available. That being the annual St. Jerome Parish Men’s Retreat scheduled for MARCH 27-29, 2015 at the HOLY NAME RETREAT CENTER.
