VALENTÍN DE MADARIAGA ARQUITECTO | ARCHITECT

Nacido en Sevilla el 25 de agosto de 1960 se licenció en la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid. Comienza su carrera profesional en el año 1987 junto al prestigioso arquitecto Ernesto Merello, cuya sociedad se especializa entre otros en arquitectura residencial en urbanizaciones de alto standing. Juntos consiguen mezclar a la perfección dos estilos diferenciados fundiéndolos en una misma forma de entender la Arquitectura. Ha realizado más de 150 viviendas unifamiliares para clientes particulares, además de numerosas promociones de viviendas plurifamiliares para las firmas de mayor prestigio del país. Su firma ha desarrollado proyectos de hoteles, casas club en campos de golf, jardines, piscinas, edificios comerciales e industriales, restaurantes, cortijos, reformas de edificios singulares, iglesias. Algunas de sus obras han sido publicadas en las revistas y libros más importantes del sector, además de ser utilizadas para numerosos spots publicitarios. Apasionado por el arte contemporáneo crea la colección MP de la Fundación Valentín de Madariaga y Oya cuyas obras están relacionadas con el medio ambiente y la naturaleza.

Esa relación entre Arte y Arquitectura se funde en su forma de proyectar. Su versatilidad y experiencia a la hora de diseñar una vivienda le hace adaptarse perfectamente a las necesidades del cliente. Se define como arquitecto utilizando el símil de un sastre que confecciona un traje a medida. Gracias a las teorías del Feng Shui que utiliza desde hace más de 15 años, todos los diseños de sus casas surgen de una forma natural y con sentido común, integrándose perfectamente en el entorno donde van a ser construidas. Cada solar le da sus propias pautas de cómo debe transformarlo para poder edificar y conseguir la armonía y el equilibrio necesario. Su arquitectura más personal es un estímulo a los sentidos, una atracción que te seduce desde el primer momento con una armonía perfecta entre los espacios, el entorno y las personas. En este catálogo se muestra una selección de viviendas construidas en la Urbanización Sotogrande en Cádiz que por su cercanía al mar recoge dos estilos de arquitectura, la tradicional andaluza y un estilo más moderno y personal que resulta de una mezcla entre la cultura árabe y la arquitectura contemporánea.

Born on the 25th August 1960 in Seville (Spain), he graduated from the Madrid Technical Institute of Architecture. He began his career in 1987 alongside the renowned architect, Ernesto Merello, whose company specializes in luxury housing estate design, amongst other things. Together, they were able to bring together two differing styles to perfection, merging them into a common approach to Architecture. He has designed more than 150 single-family residences for private customers, as well as several multi-family estates for the most renowned building companies in Spain. His company has designed projects for hotels, golf club-houses, gardens, swimming-pools, commercial and industrial buildings, restaurants, farms, historic building alterations, churches and many more. Some of the projects have been published in the most important magazines and books from the architectural field, as well as having been used for numerous advertising spots. As a passionate follower of contemporary art, he created the MP Collection for the valentine de Madariaga y Oya Foundation, whose works all have an environmental and nature theme.

It is this relationship between Art and Architecture that blends into his project style. His versatility and experience when designing a residence provides him with the ability to adapt projects to customer requirements perfectly. He often refers to himself as a tailor making a made-to-measure suit. Thanks to Feng-Shui theory, which he has used for over 15 years, all his residence designs arise from natural shapes and common sense, moulding themselves perfectly into the surrounds where they are to be built. Each plot of land poses its own idiosyncrasies for construction and achieving the required harmony and balance. His most intimate architecture serves to stimulate the senses: a seductive love-at-first-sight attraction to the viewer, with perfect harmony between spaces, surroundings and people. This catalogue offers an insight into residences built for the Sotogrande Estate in Cadiz; its proximity to the sea allows two different styles of architecture – traditional Andalusian and a more modern and personal one, as a consequence of merging Arab culture with contemporary architecture.

EL COMIENZO ES UNA AVENTURA PARA EL CLIENTE Y UN RETO PARA EL ARQUITECTO EN LA BÚSQUEDA DE CUMPLIR UN SUEÑO The beginning is always an adventure for the customer; the challenge for the architect is to try and make the dream come true

01 En un solar que reunía muy buenas condiciones a la hora de proyectar la vivienda había que diseñarla al exterior con la mayor privacidad y sencillez, pero manteniendo la fuerza y el movimiento de sus líneas. Se ideó una casa-patio en dos plantas con un estilo tecnoárabe, cuyo interior tenía que ser lo más práctico y diáfano posible, potenciando siempre la entrada de luz natural en estrecha comunión con las zonas externas. A plot of land that has everything that is required. For the project itself, the outer elevation should be designed with the utmost privacy and simplicity, yet without removing any of the strength or movement of its features. A techno-arabic style, two-level patio-residence was devised, whose interior had to be as practical and open as possible to reinforce the sunlight and the close ties with the outer areas.

La situación y características de una parcela sin vistas al exterior requería una escenografía interior. Como resultado destacan dos ejes, uno longitudinal con cipreses y palmeras que unen exterior, claustro, salón y jardín y otro transversal de cipreses que une poolhouse, piscina y macetón del cuarto de instalaciones.

The location and features of a plot without a view onto the outside required inner scenography. As a result, two axes stand out: the vertical one with poplars and palms that bring together the exterior, the cloister, living-room and garden; and the horizontal one bringing together the pool-house, swimming-pool and huge tub at the pump-house.

El exterior adquiere gran importancia debido al carácter de vivienda de verano convirtiéndose no sólo en un jardín, sino en un lugar de esparcimiento para ser contemplado y pasar gran parte de las horas del día. The outside area has acquired great significance due to its summer-residence character, making it not only a garden, but also a place to be admired, where the residents can stretch out, relax and spend a the greater part of the day.

La vivienda se organiza en torno a un claustro en la entrada abierto por dos lados mediante una galería de arcos de medio punto y bóvedas de crucería. En su interior, el estanque- fuente acompaña a un panorama visual que se convierte en el elemento central del proyecto. The residence is organized around a cloister at the entrance that is open-sided via a gallery of Roman arches and ribbed vaults. Inside, the fountain-pool accompanies a visual panorama that becomes the focus of the project.

En el diseño de interiores, Carmen Brujó utiliza materiales tan distintos como el acero, el metacrilato, la madera o el plástico para componer sillas, mesas, consolas y otros elementos decorativos que conviven en armonía.

For the interior, Carmen Brujó has employed such unusual materials as steel, plexiglass, wood and plastic to create chairs, tables, consoles and other decorative features that cohabit harmoniously.

Fueron grandes los retos que encontró el arquitecto a la hora de diseñar el proyecto. La topografía irregular del terreno -grandes rocas estaban ubicadas en la parcelahabía que aprovecharla al máximo para la integración con la ordenación del conjunto. La vegetación característica del Parque Natural que linda con la parcela, debía ser una parte integradora de la casa con el medio que la rodea. Por último, la distribución interior tenía que poseer unas características determinadas, ya que no sólo eran diseñadas pensando en la funcionalidad para las personas que la habitarían, sino que tenían que albergar obras de arte contemporáneo de unas determinadas dimensiones.

The architect was faced with great design challenges: the irregular lie of the land, with a dispersion of huge rocks all over the plot, had to be exploited to the utmost to be able to integrate it into an ordered whole. The characteristic flora from the nature Reserve on the plots borders would have to be a unifying feature between the residence itself and its surrounding environment. Finally, the interior distribution of the residence would have to have certain features: it would not only have to be designed with the occupants’ functionality in mind, but it would also have to house contemporary works of art of a certain size.

El proyecto gira en torno al Feng-Shui como filosofía del saber vivir de acuerdo con el entorno y el medio ambiente. Ésta surge aplicando el sentido común a la hora de orientar los distintos espacios. The project revolves around the Feng-Shui philosophy of living in harmony with one’s surroundings and the environment. This is achieved through common-sense application of orienting various spaces.

El estilo arquitectónico se basa en el equilibrio y la simetría, cuyo resultado es una casa abierta por todos sus lados con la sensación de vivir en la cubierta de un gran barco. The architectural style is based on balance and symmetry, the result of which is a residence open on each side with the sensation of living on the deck of a great ship.

Aprovechando la base rocosa que confiere solidez y combinándola con el agua, que aporta movimiento, se consigue mantener viva la obra creada.

The work comes to life by exploiting the rocky base – providing solidity – and combining it with water that provides movement. 31

A la izquierda, el porche principal, abierto hacia la piscina. El concepto de su mobiliario forma parte de sentirse como en el salón de la casa, por lo que se le da el mismo carácter e importancia. Para el suelo, se utiliza un pavimento industrial liso que no precisa de juntas, consiguiéndose la unión de todas las dependencias.

The concept of the porch furniture arises from a sense of almost being in a living-room, so it has been given the same character and importance. For the flooring, a smooth industrial pavement requiring no joins has been employed, thus achieving a union between all the areas.

EN EL PROCESO DE DISEÑO, LA SENCILLEZ SE CONVIERTE EN UNA VIRTUD In the design process, simplicity becomes a virtue

03 El proyecto se planteó en una casa de dos plantas en forma de “L” en la que se diferencian en su distribución las distintas zonas de esparcimiento y descanso. Esta idea se transforma en la imagen que modela el proyecto en su diseño y ejecución. La simplicidad conceptual y de lenguaje en sus líneas aporta una estética sensual y equilibrada. El resultado habla por sí mismo sobre la capacidad de la arquitectura para generar ambientes ideales para vivir. L-shaped residence differentiating its distribution between the various relaxation and rest areas. This idea was transformed into the image that moulded the project in its design and execution stages. Conceptual and architectural simplicity of shapes provide sensual, balanced aesthetics. The results speak for themselves regards the capacity architecture has in being able to generate ideal dwelling atmospheres.

04 El proyecto consistió en la reforma integral de la vivienda principal, a la que se le anexionó un nuevo edificio con una cúpula, sello personal del arquitecto. El reto fue conservar el estilo tradicional de la arquitectura andaluza y hacerlo convivir con un estilo más moderno y contemporáneo. El resultado final salta a la vista: una impresionante casa de verano donde los nuevos elementos arquitectónicos aportan una gran belleza al conjunto y engrandecen la villa. The project consisted in a full refurbishment of the main house. A new building was incorporated, featuring a dome, the architect’s personal imprint. Challenge was to preserve the Andalusian architecture traditional style while branding it with a modern and contemporary style. The final result is patently obvious: an impressive summer residence where the new architectural elements provide a global picture of beauty and enhance the entire house.

La convivencia entre el estilo andaluz de teja y el estilo más contemporáneo del arquitecto puede observarse en esta imagen, con la incorporación de nuevas formas a la vivienda principal, como el edificio de la cúpula, el porche y el pool-house.

The coexistence of the Andalusian roof tiles style and the architect’s modern style is illustrated in this picture that shows the incorporation of new shapes in the main house, such as the building with the dome, the porch and the pool-house.

La piscina, de líneas rectas, se proyectó junto al porche de la vivienda principal, el cual se amplió en el centro del mismo para crear una zona de uso frecuente al aire libre. La decoración, con predominio de vivos colores, la llevó a cabo la interiorista Marta de la Rica. La piscina y el paisaje crean el ambiente perfecto para disfrutar del entorno en armonía.

The straight-lined swimming-pool was set next to the main building’s porch. This part was enlarged in order to create a broader open air space. The decoration, with bright colours prevailing, was made by interior designer Marta de la Rica. The swimming-pool and the landscape provide the perfect atmosphere as to enjoy the environment in harmony.

The decoration work has played a fundamental role in regards of the final result. The personal imprint is reflected in every corner of the house and provides a personal, warm style all around.

Los grandes jardines juegan un papel protagonista, integrándose con la arquitectura y proporcionando una sensación de equilibrio, tranquilidad y paz. Además, la parcela cuenta con unas maravillosas vistas al campo de golf. Broad gardens play a prominent role, becoming part of the achitecture and providing a feeling of balance, relax and peace. The plot also has wonderful views over the golf course.

El arquitecto se decidió por construir una casa de dos plantas más semisótano cuyo movimiento fuese adaptándose a su topografía. Los distintos volúmenes van formando su distribución interior creando un espacio rico en la entrada de luz natural y en la relación entre los distintos espacios. The architect decided on building a two storey residence with semi-basement, whose movement could be adapted to the lie of the land. The different volumes make up the interior distribution and create a space that is rich with warm sunlight and proportionate to their relationship with the other areas.

La ducha de verano es uno de los elementos característicos en los diseños del arquitecto. El acceso se realiza a través del baño principal creando dos espacios que adquieren un enorme atractivo. The summer shower is one of the characteristic elements in the architect’s design. Access is from the master bathroom, thus creating two spaces that are tremendously attractive.

La parcela permitió crear un juego de distintas piezas en las que organizar la distribución interior.

The plot of land enabled a set of various elements to be created and where the interior distribution could be arranged.

El acceso se desarrolla mediante un paseo de cinco patios en los que resultaba necesario conjugar agua, vegetación y edificación. Limoneros, palmeras, cipreses y naranjos crean un ambiente inmejorable para realizar el acceso de forma peatonal. The entrance is executed with a pathway through five patios where it has been necessary to combine water, flora and building. Lemon and orange trees, palms and poplars create an unbeatable environment for providing access on foot.

En la planta alta se sitúa el dormitorio principal para darle la intimidad necesaria con respecto al resto de la casa. The master bedroom is located on the top floor to provide it with the necessary privacy regards the rest of the residence.

¿DE QUÉ SERVIRÍAN LOS ESPACIOS SI NO SON CREADOS A LA MEDIDA DE CADA PERSONA? What use are spaces if they are not created to match each individual?

06 Emplazada en una parcela en una zona baja se ideó esta casa en la que las ventanas están estratégicamente colocadas para posibilitar la entrada de luz natural y la circulación de aire en el interior. La fachada que da al jardín goza de una gran espectacularidad fruto del enorme ventanal del salón, cuya gran altura permite en planta alta crear un juego de doble altura de comunicación entre las distintas zonas. Situated on a low-level plot of land, this house was devised with strategically placed windows that could allow as much sunlight and fresh air into the interior. The elevation looking over the garden is very spectacular due to the enormous living-room window: its great height allows the second floor to create an appearance of dual level communication between the various areas.

La fachada principal de acceso a la casa presenta tres arcos de medio punto que sirven tanto de entrada como para dar luz interior al hall. En el resto de elementos de la fachada se utilizan formas geométricas sencillas. Esta mezcla de estilos le confieren su propia estética visual.

The main elevation giving access to the residence has three Roman arches that serve as an entrance and also to allow sunlight inside the hall. The remaining elements of the elevation have been designed on a simple geometrical shape basis.

El desarrollo se realizó sobre cuatro parcelas que contaban con una casa a la que había que hacer una reforma integral y añadir los anexos de casa de invitados, pool-house, piscina, capilla, lago y ajardinamiento. The development was carried out over four plots of land that contained one house needing full alteration work and the addition of annexes such as the guest house, pool-house, swimming-pool, chapel, lake and gardens.

Todo el proyecto estaba diseñado desde el comienzo apoyado en tres ejes en tridente cuyo elemento central es la casa principal. The entire project was designed from the start on the basis of three axes that form a trident and lead to the main residence as its centrepiece.

Los espacios construidos son tan importantes como los jardines que los rodean para proporcionar el equilibrio buscado en el diseño inicial.

The built-up spaces are just as important as the surrounding gardens to provide the balance sought after in the original design.

The guest house has four bedrooms with a bathroom, kitchen and large living-room leading to an outer porch in the swimming-pool and pool-house area.

El acceso a la casa de invitados se realiza mediante un patio central con fuente. El diseño está inspirado en la arquitectura tradicional andaluza.

Entrance to the guest house is gained via a central patio with fountain, taking its design inspiration from traditional Andalusian architecture.

Las amplias zonas verdes y el lago que rodea a la capilla consiguen aislarla y aportarle la paz y tranquilidad necesarias.

The wide expanses of greenery and the lake that surrounds the chapel make it isolated and give it the peace and quiet it requires.

Mediante la arquitectura tradicional se crean los espacios en los que las zonas interiores y exteriores gozan de una gran armonía. Dos piscinas crean un eje con el porche que separa las dos zonas de la vivienda. Traditional architecture has provided spaces where the inside and outside have an exquisite sense of enjoyment. The two swimming-pools create an axis with the porch that separates the two areas of the residence proper.
