Tapri Chai SHORT STORY: CHAI TAPRI OCT 22 ISSUE 04 BY TYLER WAN It was raining heavily, and I was in no mind to visit the therapist whom I had been forced to meet for the past two months. It was just the perfect day to cuddle in the blankets and watch the sky cry for the pains it can see from up there. But just like all the other times, it didn’t go as planned, and I heard my father honking outside for me to hurry for my scheduled session. Sighing tiredly, all I could do was comply with what was happening. India is a place where, every gali has a chai ki tapri, brewing with the different essence; yet bringing everyone together. It’s a country where you bond over chai. To us, Chai is not a beverage but an emotion. As we r e a ched the r e , my the r apist wa s a lr e ady outside a s if wa iting for me , but tha t wa s the l e a st I could be li e v e in, I ne v e r r e a ll y opened up to him, pe rhaps be c aus e wha t happe - ned with me wasn’t the best of what life could give me. “Good evening, how are you doing?”, he asked, coming over to me and my father, while passing me a small smile which somehow made me more anxious, it felt strange to talk to him outside the confined room, where the walls and he had heard all my secrets, and eyes which witnessed my innumerable breakdowns despite my unwillingness to show them. L o o k ing up fr om my thoughts, I r e a li z e d tha t my f a the r ha d a lr e a d y l e ft, and we we r e he a d ing t owa r d my the r a p ist’s c a r. BETALES Page 06 “He r e l e t me he l p , y ou c an k e e p y our b e l ong ing s in the b a c k s e a t.” He

“Then I will make sure to bring you stories in this small place.” Not knowing why I said it, but seeing the smile I was rewarded with made it all worth it. “Sure Beta, I will be here to listen.” He seemed to have lots of stories, not all seen by him, but he talked as if this small place led him to know the world better than he would have in any other place. “Oh beta, what stories are to tell now, once I saw the whole world from here, and now the world fails to see the small chai ki tapri.” Tapri Chai SHORT STORY: CHAI TAPRI OCT 22 ISSUE 04 BETALES Page 08 “I am sorry Kaka”. I didn’t even know why he was apologizing, maybe because fate had been cruel to him. “It’s ok, beta. You enjoy your tea.” with that, he went to his place behind the stove and started to make tea for another couple of friends who entered the place. “You can be, you know that when I used to visit here, I had the same doubts and concerns, I wasn’t the best at studies, and life seemed pretty hard, but Kaka somehow became my source of comfort, the dimly lit place, and brewing stories every day gave me the will to continue with my life.” It was getting late, and my time for the session finished already, but this was the first time I was reluctant to go home. In this small place, Kaka’s smile, the empty chai cups sitting between us, and the feeling of wanting to open up and be better, to get through my life, maybe just like a younger version of the therapist. I found my comfort here. “Come on, it’s getting late. I told your father I would drop you home.” He said, getting up and going over to where Kaka sat. “Kaka, chai was just as good as always, but I missed those stories of yours.” He said, paying him for chai, maybe even more. I saw Kaka smile and shake his head as if it was a thing that he repeated often. “He seems like a kind man. I wish I could be like him someday,” I said, sipping the freshly made tea. Thisis a new short-story collection brought to you by BE TALES and debut writer Tyler Wan And, we promise to bring soul-touching refreshing storiesfrom our very own Chai Tapris, exclusively for you, in every Issue of BE TALES.

There is no age limit in this world for people to dress up or wear fancy costumes and become the character you love from the fictional world you often wished you could live in. You may even wonder which to choose when you have a lot in your mind. But let me give you some tips and show you what themes have been popular all these years. CCoossttuummee PPaarrttyy FFaasshhiioonn SSeeggmmeenntt TTiimmee ttoo llooookk SSPPOOOOKKYY Decades and centuries have passed but not people's love for Dracula. The vampire look, the black cloak, the red ribbons, and the white ruffled shirts have become the most popular, iconic, and even a fashion trend among people/ celebs/ idols. Followed by the newfound love for the zombies and forever ghost idea in plain whites. The spooky-themed costume parties always have the upper hand still. BETALES Page 09 FASHION/GROOMING SEGMENT OCT 22 ISSUE 04 LLeett''ss ggoo ttooHHooggwwaarrttss PPootttteerrHHeeaaddss!! Who cannot be a Potter fan and have not watched one movie of it if not read it? People indeed wait for the letter of admission, cloaks and wait to board the train on platform 9 3/4. The Harry Potter costume party is prevalent among adults more than children. The clothes are often sold out in online stores. Recently, there have been events where Kpop idols dress as members of Slytherin house or choose other houses and greet their fans during Halloween parties, meet and greet, and interviews in South Korea. Now, don't you wish to choose your house, join the party holding a mug of butter beer, swish and swirl the wand and cast a spell?

To DDiissnneeyyllaanndd Everyone has that child at heart, waking up and sitting before a screen when coming across a Disney movie and falling in love forever, whichever place you are. From Mickey to Peter Pan, to Rupanzel to Elsa to Olaf. No one has forgotten, but feel nostalgic about childhood and choose a favourite princess or a funny cartoon character for the costume party. Disney has tons of it. People still choose Disney themes for costume parties and have fun becoming the character they adore. BTS had even dressed up as various Disney characters and did a show where Taehyung became the iconic Snow White did his choreo. Channing Tatum and Felix surely must be the two favourite Elsa of the world now. In the oldest tradition, like Dracula, there are superheroes who save the world. And it's time for Avengers to assemble.Costume parties are often filled with heroes, not just spooky ghosts and creatures. Nothing is BETALES Page 10 FASHION/GROOMING SEGMENT OCT 22 ISSUE 04 YYoouu aarreennoowweenntteerriinngg tthhee MMaarrvveellMMuullttiivveerrssee.. more exciting than enjoying a party with friends suited up as your favourite hero, right? Ranging from Superman, Batman, Cat woman, Flash, X-men, Spider-man, Iron man, Hulk, Black Widow, Captain Marvel, Captain America and many more. You sure do the well-known Halloween party episode in the Friends sitcom and how Monica and Phoebe dressed up. TThheeEErraa ooff JJookkeerr aannddHHaarrlleeyyQQuuiinnnn The Joker and the lady Joker are trending worldwide with their peculiar face makeup, hairstyle, and crazy ideas. It is not always superheroes that people love with all their hearts, but sometimes the villains too. And these two from Gotham City have captured millions' hearts and make sure to liven the party and become the party's stars. Costume parties never cease the fun. The costumes, the setting, and the peoples energies add fun to the regular get-togethers. They liven up the mood and photo sessions. They bring out the other side of you you want to be as you dress up. So for once in your life, be a part of a costume party and experience the fun.

VVaannaakkkkaammCChheennnnaaii Hello wonderful people, who don’t know me, but are interested to travel through my neverending quench of exploring places. I am Eva, your eighteen-year-old friend who has taken traveling and exploring the world as the pulse of life. And, to those who already know me, how are you my makkale? How're my Tamil people, and by the way, I meant how are you? With all this nonsense of boosting my Tamil, you might have guessed our next destination, yes, it’s none other than Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu, and also known as the ‘Gateway to South India’. TRAVELOGUE OCT 22 ISSUE 04 BACKPACK WITH EVA Let me take a moment to say that the India we see today is not the India we see tomorrow. Everything changes over 24 hours, and that’s why when I traveled from Pondicherry to Chennai on a pleasant morning with early morning blush still stretched above and embracing us, the monument in solitude looked like a destroyed beauty, and that is Alampara Fort. Situated on ChennaiPuducherry East Coast Road in Madurantakam. This demolished fort spreads across 15 acres of land and once was a regal beauty in its brick and limestone construction. BETALES Page 20

WELCOME TO PARADISE Built by the Carnatic Nawabs during the 18 th century, this fort had a 100-meter-long dockyard stretching into the sea with a Shiva temple and a pond. It also had a choultry (or inn) on the western side for the pilgrims who traveled along the East Coast Road from Kashi to Rameswaram. Though in the later half, due to the disputes and take-over of Madraspatnam by Britishers, this port which once exported zari, cloth, salt, and ghee turned into crumbles. Moreover, isolation, the 2004 Tsunami, and no proper attention from locals or tourists have led this place a lonely shooting spot for haunting romance sequences in movies. As we move further, I will request you to switch on your internal architect for a much better experience because you might be able to enjoy the coming places if you can recreate the era and glory from the past. So, heading ahead of Alampara Fort and quick deep sleep, I opened my eyes to the salty breeze of Marine drive. We snaked through the morning traffic of Chennai while buildings covered one side, and glamorous Marine Drive stretched on the other. Stretching from Besant Nagar to Fort St.George, this Marine drive spread across a whooping 12 Km, and no wonder it is the second-largest beach in the world and the first in India. Along with being the home for all kinds of activities, this place also provides shelter to famous statues like The Victory of Labour and Mahatama Gandhi along with Kanagi, Sivananda, Avaaiyar, Thanthai Periyar, Tiruvalluvar, Dr. Annie Beasant, Bharathiyar, Kamarajar, M.G. Ramachandran, and more. While a few famous places like Madras University, Presidency College, Swami Vivekananda Museum and House, AIR, and various government offices are near the driveway. Since I have been here before, I did not stop at Swami Vivekananda Museum, but if you are visiting Chennai for the first you might like to visit this place. Built in 1842 this Victorian-styled building used to store Ice blocks before a renowned lawyer bought it in 1897, for two days and Swami Vivekananda stayed here. Hence, eventually, this place came to be known as Vivekananda House, and every year they celebrate Vivekananda Navaratri, while this also is a Museum dedicated to Vivekananda. C O N C Episodic by Harsh Mhetre C O N C E A L Recap: Ajay and the gang stumbled upon a girl CHAPTER 05 BETALES Page 27 who supposedly claimed to have escaped a kidnapping. Ajay with his initial statement to handover this case to the Police was unknowingly getting involved again as the Trinity had found their way in the city again. To solve the mystery of the girl, kidnapping and the Trinity, Ajay again sets off this time in a dense forest where he unveils his true form. “We go in here?” Vikrant asked me as we walked nearthe forest. It wasin broad daylight that we decided that we will try and find the shelter Riddhi mentioned to us. The matter at hand wasn’t normal, but the involvement of the Trinity in this had just made me do it. They never had sorted to these kinds of techniques, but also I knew that they would resort to any kind of methods. Right now, I was only concerned with finding out the truth behind the kidnappings. “Yes, we need to.” Ireplied and then walked forwardsin the dense forest. It wasn’t dense for an average wood-lover but was dense for newbies like Triveni. I was able to see the fear and anxiety hiding behind curiosity in her movements. Riddhi walked closely to Triveni holding her hand which was evident asshe felt the safest around her. “Are we going the right way?” Vikrant lagged behind a little and asked away the doubt everyone had in their mind. “I hope so,” Ireplied in a concerned way. As we walked ahead, we reached a point of high altitude with a steep decline on our right and a sharp vertical on ourleft. The scene looked as beautiful as menacing and dangerous it was, we were engrossed in our surroundings till we heard a loud rustle around us. We all tried to find the source of the sound, but we couldn’t. I looked at Triveni and then at Vikrant and conveyed to scan the nearby area. So, we all started searching for the source of the sound in different directions. Riddhi succumbed to herfears and stood hopelessly. TEEN THRILLER OCT 22 ISSUE 04

Memories Episode 06 Harika Kothapally CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE OCT 22 ISSUE 04 Last Dream of one It's been three months since Arjun left for the military, and no day passes by without I having this strange feeling. I always feel like something is going to happen, but all my thoughts were pushed away by the assurance he gives every time he calls. I want him to come back soon, but things never work that way. And yesterday the call from him saying he's going on a secret mission made me stressed out. "You feeling good?" My friend, Rani said while we were doing an ultrasound. still stuck to that one thought I had for the past few months. "He's on a mission. So, no talking." I smiled and got up from the bed. "Still, you do that. You should know this too." Her sarcastic comment made me smile as I grabbed my handbag and took the prescription she gave. Walking out of the room, I saw husbands taking care of their pregnant wives, and this was the only moment I felt alone. When we knew I was pregnant, Arjun took a leave from the military and promised he'll stay with me all the time. But I guess nothing is in our favor. BETALES Page 37 "Yeah," I said, looking away. " Take care of yourself, love. I'll be fine." I Last Episode "The baby's a little stressed out," Rani replied, ignoring my answer. "I know," I said as I sighed deeply. "If this is about Arjun just talk to him. It's not good for the baby. You are a doctor too. You know how it works." She tried to explain, but my thoughts were "Take the medicines on time and don't stress yourself. It's not-" "It's not good for the baby. I know." I said with a little whining tone.

nce and soft sobs. But even in that darkness, my son assured me I'm not alone, and I'll never be. "Would you like to move in with us?" Kamala, Vikram's wife asked. CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE OCT 22 ISSUE 04 "You will be alone here. Please move in with us." She asked again. Walking inside the house holding my newborn baby I was excited for the journey ahead, but the pain of not having him by my side still stings. BETALES Page 39 "And that's how your father manipulated me to join the army." I heard Vikram say as I walked inside Amin's room. "You're telling that story again?" I said with a soft chuckle. "It's interesting, Ma." The 7-year-old Amin said and turned towards his uncle giving him an exciting look. "One more... please," Amin said. Vikram and I chuckled before he started telling yet another tale of Arjun. "It's Arjun's anniversary tomorrow. Will you be okay?" Kamala asked as she handed me some tea. "I'll keep your luggage in your room," Vikram said, and I nodded my head in agreement. I took Amin to Arjun's photo, "Amin, he's your father, remember him, will you?" I said with a smile. Vikram and Kamala spent most of their time here, and Vikram started talking about Arjun as bedtime stories. At first, I used to sit beside Amin and listen to those stories. At the time when we were not together, I heard every one of them. They helped me go through this pain. "... Yeah. I'll be fine." I said with a smile. "No," I said softly. "This is the only place where I have memories with him. Every corner of this house is filled with his smile, I don't want to leave him." I said with a soft smile. "Will you be okay?" She asked with a worried tone. "I don't know. But I'll be fine." I assured her. At the end of the year, I gave birth to Amin. The moment I held Amin in my hands started shivering, but he wasn't there to support me. I had to be strong, at least for him. I have to tell him that having happy memories is more valuable than sad memories. "Amin is taking after Arjun. He looks more like his father." Kamala said with a soft smile lingering on her face. "I see him too. I just want Amin not to feel that emptiness of not having a father, and I don't know if I'm doing right." I said, holding back my tears as I sniffed.
