It has been a wonderful and successful year since the release of THE BORINQUENEERS. Along with extensive exposure throughout the United States with a national broadcast on PBS, an overseas broadcast on AFN (Armed Forces Network) and numerous local screenings, the film has also been honored with awards. The film received the Award of Excellence from the 2008 Accolade 2008 Accolade Television Awards Competition which recognizes outstanding work in film, television and video. “The Borinqueneers is a well-crafted, carefully-edited feature documentary highlighting the proud story of the only all-Hispanic unit in US Army history, the Puerto Rican 65th Infantry Regiment. The filmmakers keep viewers engaged in this fascinating story through skilled narration, use of rare archival footage and prudent use of engaging interviews.” said Thomas Baker, Ph.D., Coordinator of the Accolade Competition. In April, THE BORINQUENEERS won Best Documentary in the Puerto Rico Film Category at the Rincon International Film Festival in Puerto Rico. In July, the film received the Best Professional Documentary award at the Real to Reel International Film Festival in Shelby, North Carolina. Our film was nominated Best Documentary for Television by the prestigious 23rd Annual Imagen Awards which took place in Beverly Hills, CA on August 21. And the film is an Official Selection at the upcoming Cinesol Film Festival in South Padre Island, TX from Sept. 12-14th and the Tulipanes Latino Art & Film Festival in Holland, MI from Sept. 12-14th. Producer Noemí Figueroa Soulet was a Finalist in the Estela Award given by the National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP) which honors talented Latino/a filmmakers who, either through a stunning debut or a steady rise in a relatively short period of time, have distinguished themselves through their work. In May, Noemí received the Premio Ilustre award by the Puerto Rican Heritage NJ Statewide Parade Committee. Last fall, Noemi received awards from Comité Noviembre of New York and the Latina Women’s Council of Mercer County, NJ. We are very proud of the recognition being bestowed on THE BORINQUENEERS because, after so many years of hard work, it provides validation and an appreciation by the public for the compelling story of the Borinqueneers! Our mission now is to spread the word about the Borinqueneers of the 65th Infantry Regiment. There are many people still who have never heard about them and every public or private screening (whether it be on television, in a local screening, a film festival or in a private screening at your home for family and friends), each viewing is an opportunity to educate and inform someone. What can you do to spread the word? • Call your local PBS station and encourage them to air the film. • Help organize a screening through your corporation, community organization, school or university, veterans group, etc. For public screenings, you must obtain a public performance license through El Pozo Productions or the Cinema Guild at www.cinemaguild.com or call (800) 723-5522. • Start a grassroots movement to have the 65th Infantry medals reviewed for possible Medal of Honor upgrades. Or begin a movement for the exoneration of the court-martialed 65th Infantry soldiers. Collect signatures on petitions and mail them to us or to your local politicians. In Memoriam… LTC Tomás Guffain (Ret.) passed away on February 10, 2008 just short of 91years of age. As one of the original Borinqueneers, LTC Guffain served with the 65th Infantry Regiment during World War II and in the Korean War receiving a Silver Star and a Bronze Star. Sadly, his wife, Elma, passed away just four days later on February 14th, Valentine’s Day. Their son, Carlos, wrote us “This June they would have celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. We want to believe that Dad called down from Heaven and Mom went to join him. They are now together in everlasting peace.” Both were interred at Arlington Cemetery on April 15th with full military honors. Tomas appeared in THE BORINQUENEERS film. Submitted by his son, Carlos Guffain. Jesús Nieves Crespo of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, passed away on November 16, 2007. He served in “L” Company in early 1952 until September 1952 participating in the Kelly Hill battle where he was wounded. Jesus was one of the 65th soldiers that was court martialed receiving a two-year sentence. His grandson wrote to us: “Before he died, he had the opportunity to see the film and felt very proud when he saw his photo and to have been part of that wonderful unit.” Submitted by his grandson, Nelson Medina. Carmelo Acevedo passed away on December 9, 2005. He served in “K” Company from September 1951 to November 1952. Submitted by his son Wilfredo Acevedo. Santiago Montalvo Montalvo passed away in April, 2008. He served in “D” Company from March, 1951 to December, 1951 where he received two Bronze Stars. Submitted by his son Miguel Montalvo. William Marquez, age 82, passed away in San Jose, CA on Aug. 11 2008. “Willie” was in the 65th’s Service Company and participated in all 9 campaigns of the Korean war. He was employed by the Hiller Aircraft Corporation of Palo Alto, CA for 25 years and retained that identity with pride. He was and shall always be as the 3rd Division motto states, "The Rock" upon which our family rests. Submitted by his son, Steven Marquez. SSGT Antonio Santos Carrucini (Ret.), age 87 of Frisco, Texas, died

on March 19, 2008. Santos served in the 65th during World War II in Company “F” and in Korea in Company “D”. He retired after 25 years in the Army from 1940-1965. During the Korean War, Santos was a squad leader and gunner. On December 22, 1950, a large Chinese force attacked his battalion with about 200 concentrating their fire on Santos’ machine gun. Stranded and without communication, Santos opened fire along with his assistant gunner, Cpl. Gilberto Calderon. Just as the enemy was advancing, the machine gun lost the covert bolt-in that built up pressure making it disabled. Using typical Borinqueneer ingenuity, Santos removed a safety pin from Calderon’s shirt which held a Saint’s medal and used it to replace the bolt pin. Disregarding his own safety, he bravely opened fire again. Due to Santos' and his squad’s heroic actions, the enemy was forced to withdraw. Although Santos was initially recommended for a Medal of Honor, he was awarded instead the Silver Star. Calderon and the other men also earned various medals making it the most decorated unit in Korea at the time. The other valiant men in the squad were: 1st Sgt. Saez, Cpl. Gilberto Calderon, PFC Carmoaga, PFC Peter (New Yorican), PFC Bonet, PFC Ruben Santiago Cabrera, CPL Enrique Aviles and a Korean interpreter Kadoni. Antonio’s daughter, Carmen, is working with Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson (Texas) in trying to get Santos upgraded to a Medal of Honor. She is trying to locate Gilberto Calderon or another witness who can testify to Antonio’s heroism. If you have any information, please contact us or Carmen at [email protected].

En Recuerdo a… Tnte. Col. Tomás Guffain (Ret). falleció el 10 de febrero de 2008 a casi 91 años de edad. Como uno de los Borinqueños originales, el Col. Guffain sirvió en el Regimiento 65 de Infantería durante Segunda Guerra Mundial y en la Guerra de Corea donde recibió la Estrella de Plata y de Bronce. Tristemente, su esposa, Elma, falleció sólo cuatro días más tarde el 14 de febrero, en el Día de San Valentín. Su hijo, Carlos, nos escribió “Este junio ellos hubieran celebrado su 62 aniversario de boda. Queremos pensar que Papá la llamó desde el Cielo y Mamá fue a encontrarse con él. Ahora están juntos en eterna paz.” Ambos fueron enterrados en el Cementerio Arlington el 15 de abril con completos honores militares. Tomas apareció en la película Los Borinqueños. Reportado por su hijo, Carlos Guffain. Jesús Nieves Crespo de Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, falleció el 16 de noviembre de 2007. Sirvió en la Compañía "L" a principios de 1952 hasta septiembre de 1952 participando en la batalla de Colina Kelly donde fue herido. Jesús fue uno de los soldados del 65 que le aplicaron corte marcial recibiendo una condena de dos años. Su nieto nos escribió: "Antes de morir, él tuvo la oportunidad de ver la película y se sintió muy orgulloso de poder ver su foto y formar parte de este maravillosa grupo." Reportado por su nieto, Nelson Medina. Carmelo Acevedo falleció el 9 de diciembre de 2005. Él sirvió en la Compañía “K” desde septiembre de 1951 hasta noviembre de 1952. Reportado por su hijo Wilfredo Acevedo. Santiago Montalvo Montalvo falleció en abril de 2008. Él sirvió en la Compañía “D” desde marzo de 1951 a diciembre de 1951 donde recibió dos Estrellas de Bronce. Reportado por su hijo Miguel Montalvo.

SSGT Antonio Santos Carrucini (Ret.), de 87 años en Frisco, Tejas, murió el 19 de marzo de 2008. Sirvió en el 65 durante la 2da Guerra Mundial en la Compañía "F" y en Corea en la Compañía "D". Se licenció después de 25 años en el Ejército de 1940-1965. Durante la Guerra de Corea, Santos fue líder de escuadrilla y operador de ametralladora. El 22 de diciembre de 1950, una fuerza grande de chinos atacó su batallón con 200 soldados concentrando su fuego a la ametralladora de Santos. Varado y sin la comunicación, Santos abrió fuego junto con su ayudante, el cabo Gilberto Calderon. Cuando el enemigo avanzaba, la ametralladora se incapacitó cuando perdió el cerrojo encubierto que acumulaba presión. Usando el ingenio típico del Borinqueño, Santos quitó el imperdible que aguantaba una medalla religiosa de la camisa de Calderon y lo usó para sustituir el alfiler de cerrojo. Desatendiendo su propia seguridad, él valientemente abrió fuego de nuevo. Debido a Santos y las acciones heroicas de su escuadrilla, el enemigo fue obligado a retirarse. Aunque al principio recomendaron a Santos para una Medalla de Honor, en cambio le concedieron la Estrella de Plata. Calderon y los otros hombres también recibieron varias medallas convirtiéndolos, hasta entonces, en la más condecorada unidad en Corea. Los otros hombres valientes en la escuadrilla eran: 1r Sgto. Saez, cabo Gilberto Calderon, PFC Carmoaga, PFC Peter (boricua de Nueva York), PFC Bonet, PFC Ruben Santiago Cabrera, cabo Enrique Aviles y un intérprete coreano, Kadoni. La hija de Antonio, Carmen Santos, está trabajando con la Senadora Kay Bailey Hutchinson (de Tejas) para obtenerle a Santos una Medalla de Honor.
