Bethany House of Hospitality Gratitude Report October 2022 – October 2023 Walking Together, Building a Brighter Future

The Bethany House Community Over the past year Bethany House has been home to 23 women with 11 children. Two babies were born to moms living at Bethany House. Having as many as eight children in the house at once brought new challenges and many blessings. The women are supported by a dedicated staff of 7 generous and compassionate women. Two new staff members have joined us; both are first generation immigrants. There are three sisters all from different congregations. We are fortunate to have staff members with personal experience—2 are immigrants 2 are daughters of immigrants and 2 have lived and ministered for extended periods in Latin America. This fall semester we also have interns and students from Catholic Theological Union DePaul Northwestern Northeastern and Dominican Universities as well as 4 novices and an abundance of generous weekly and occasional volunteers. We are also grateful to have a Comboni Missionary sister from Eritrea who is studying at Catholic Theological Union as a member of the Bethany House community. Beyond Bethany During this past year thanks to a significant donation from the Hilton Fund for Sisters we were able to begin the Beyond Bethany program. As the number of women moving on from Bethany House grew over these five years so did the number of calls from former participants with questions or concerns about housing medical economic or other issues. Continuing our mission to support women as they journey to independence we have hired a part-time staff member (beloved former director Darlene Gramigna) to offer follow-up case management support as women leave Bethany House to move out on their own. She helps them search for apartments and make connections. We have even been able to subsidize rent for the first few months as they build their credit or offer an opportunity to continue community college or career development education. (Phlebotomy courses were quite popular during Covid!) Beyond Bethany has accompanied 26 women in various ways over this past year. For the past year culminating with a summer working full time at Bethany House we had a doctoral student from St. Catherine University (St. Paul MN) researching and developing a mentoring program for BHH volunteers. In July we had our first training for mentors who will accompany women one-to-one as they continue their journey. One of our new mentors is a retired nurse and is now accompanying a former Bethany House participant who is a new mom. The relationship is a blessing to both of them! We are planning another training in December if you would like to join this wonderful group. (Contact Kathlyn at 773-633-2018.) COUNTRIES REPRESENTED BY PARTICIPANTS AND STAFF

Message from Board President Dear Friends and supporters of Bethany House of Hospitality As this 2022 Gratitude Report is being published near Thanksgiving my reflection on the past five years is truly imbued with thoughts of gratitude. We so often hear that when we give to others we gain so much more from them than we give. How true that is of my experience at Bethany House. One of my favorite Irish poets John O’Donohue writes in his most well-known book Anam Cara: There is a lovely idea in the Celtic tradition that if you send out goodness from yourself or if you share that which is happy or good within you it will all come back to you multiplied ten thousand times. In the kingdom of love there is no competition there is no possessiveness or control. The more love you give away the more love you will have. David Whyte another favorite writer of mine tells us that “Gratitude arises from paying attention from being awake in the presence of everything that lives within and without us.” As this fifth year comes to an end I count among my blessings the staff all of the women and children and all the volunteers who make Bethany House truly a home I am grateful. In the early years of this program I was able to spend a good amount of time with the young women who were in residence. Through that experience I have gained several wonderful young friends. As I write this I am just coming from a visit with one of them who is expecting her first baby in December. For that too I give thanks. Thank you to each and every one of you who are reading this report for you have probably been an important part of our work here. And if you are learning about Bethany House through this report I welcome you to our community of gratitude! Gratefully Patricia Crowley OSB President Bethany House of Hospitality Board of Directors Since I moved in I have had the opportunity to feel at home. They treat everyone with love and respect. It is really a great privilege and a blessing to be a part of the Bethany House family. G., Sierra Leone Watch for testimonials from Bethany House women

Events in Immigration during the year The Migrant Protection Protocols better known as the “Remain in Mexico” program was ended by the Biden administration in February 2021 reinstated by court decisions in December 2021 and ended again after a Supreme Court decision in June 2022. We have two women at Bethany House that came into the country when it was finally “their turn.” They both spent almost two years waiting in Mexico were kidnapped by cartels who demanded ransom from their families and finally were allowed into the country. Busloads of immigrants sent from Texas began arriving in New York and Washington DC in August 2021. By late August Chicago was added as a destination city. By late October Chicago had welcomed more than 3600 people. But they were being sent to Chicago in smaller numbers perhaps and with less media fanfare even earlier. Since that time Bethany House has had a full house—and more children than ever before at any one time. In November 2022 a federal judge struck down the controversial Title 42 immigration policy that has been used since March 2020 to expel hundreds of thousands of immigrants seeking asylum at the southern border in the name of public health concerns. The judge granted the Biden administration a five-week stay to develop alternate policies and the capacity to process those entering the country. That means that new policies should go into effect on December 21, 2022. We are waiting to see what effects that will have on our ministry at Bethany House. But with the house full now we are unable to welcome more women into our program. We are working closely with other agencies and church groups who are trying to respond to the great need for long-term housing and services. 0 5 10 15 20 25 Oct-21 Nov-21 Dec-21 Jan-22 Feb-22 Mar-22 Apr-22 May-22 Jun-22 Jul-22 Aug-22 Sep-22 Oct-22 Bethany House Census, Oct 2021 - Sept 2022 women children

Message from the Executive Director “The truth is hope isn’t a promise we give. It’s a promise we live. There is always light if only we’re brave enough to see it if only we’re brave enough to be it.” Amanda Gorman You may have heard of the busloads of immigrants arriving in Chicago. They were actually arriving—with less media fanfare and in smaller groups initially—since last spring. They arrived at the bus station or at churches unannounced with nowhere to go. We have had a full house at Bethany since then—and many more children in the house than any time before. It’s been a challenge—but also a privilege to witness the gift of life and energy they bring as well as the collaboration and mutual support of the women, especially the mothers. Despite language and cultural differences, international cooperation flourishes at Bethany House! The women cook together and share childcare responsibilities. They support one another when someone gets difficult news from back home or when family members are trying to cross the border to be reunited. Pope Francis wrote in his book, Let Us Dream: The Path to a Better Future, that “You have to go to the edges of existence if you want to see the world as it is. I've always thought that the world looks clearer from the periphery….You have to make for the margins to find a new future….because they [are] also places of possibility.” Bethany House is indeed one of those peripheral places of possibility. The promise and possibilities here are endless, thanks to all of you who support Bethany House with your time, talent and treasure. Grateful for the hope you share each and every day, Kathlyn Mulcahy OP Executive Director, Bethany House of Hospitality Since I moved in I have had the opportunity to study and to care for my baby and learn many things. Study is something that since childhood I wanted to do and now, when I leave the house to go to school, I am very happy for this opportunity that my parents could not give me because of the lack of opportunities in my country and the extreme poverty that held us bound. T., Guatemala

DREAMS FULFILLED AND NEW BEGINNINGS If there is one word that sums up Bethany House for me it is comienzo (beginning). For me Bethany House is a place of beginnings, where we are given opportunities. It is in our hands to improve and seek what we desire for our future in this new country that opens its doors to us and tells us without words that we can achieve what we propose if only we trust in reaching the best goals. W., El Salvador Graduations from GED program, High School, and College First day of kindergarten New life…new beginnings

We could not offer the welcoming hospitality and multiple services to the many women and children who have come to Bethany House without the dedicated and creative service of many volunteers and interns. Truly it takes a community to make Bethany House a home! Partnerships October 2021 – October 2022 DePaul University Steans Center for Community-based Service Learning – occupational therapy graduate students, website development team Family Focus – early childhood education/daycare All for Art – painting classes Internships – Catholic Theological Union, Loyola University, University of Chicago, Northeastern Illinois University, DePaul University, Dominican University, St. Catherine University (St. Paul, MN) Novices – Society of the Sacred Heart, Dominican Sisters (Peace and Sinsinawa), Congregation of St. Joseph (Orange), Franciscan Sisters of Allegany In addition, Bethany House has been blessed with the service of more than 60 volunteers who provided hundreds of hours of service. 65 new donors joined the community of Bethany House supporters in this past year, making for a total of more than 250 distinct donors during 2022. From the time I arrived at Bethany House, I have had the opportunity to receive much help at Bethany, from clothing to a room and the opportunity to continue my studies and learn English. I cannot find words for all that Bethany House does for us; they have made me feel safe and have let me know that no matter who I am or what has happened, I am someone and I can continue to dream. Here I have the opportunity to study, prepare my asylum case, and, most important, help my two sons who have autism…. Bethany House prepares us for life.
