A Message from the 2022

BPS Board Chair

The Value of Volunteer Leaders in the 2022 BPS Year

T

he Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) had an impressive year of growth and leadership in advancing pharmacy through board certification in 2022. As the chair of the board of directors, I have been privileged to work with a dedicated, smart, and experienced board who have been thoughtful in addressing feedback from colleagues who pursue and maintain board certification. The board has enjoyed the collaboration of pharmacist leaders who are experts in each of the 14 specialties recognized by BPS serving on the specialty councils. Volunteer leaders are key to the peer-reviewed and peer-developed nature of specialty certification examinations. The number of BPS-recognized specialty areas continues to increase, with the most recent specialty in Emergency Medicine Pharmacy (BCEMP) gearing up to administer its first examination in April/May of 2023. Additional specialties are in the petition/review process including pain management pharmacy and a board-approved job analysis in pharmacoinformatics, which is the first step in recognizing a new specialty. It’s important to note that insight into new or growing pharmacy practice areas comes from our pharmacy colleagues who request BPS to review a specialty area. These requests are addressed expeditiously, continuing the pharmacist-driven nature of BPS Board Certification. Leadership from the board and specialty councils has resulted in several important changes in 2022, including an increase in the size of specialty councils to better reflect the community of pharmacists within that specialty. Stimulated by the COVID-19 pandemic, when pharmacy practitioners were needed by their patients and examination sites were limited, the board approved the continued opportunity for pharmacists to take exams through live remote proctoring (LRP) in select areas when needed. Additionally, starting in 2023, some specialty examinations will transition to continuously available testing in which eligible candidates may schedule their exam for any available session within a year rather than only during the

twice-annual examination windows. Cardiology Pharmacy, Nuclear Pharmacy, and Psychiatric Pharmacy will begin offering continuous testing in April 2023, and Oncology Pharmacy will begin in August 2023, with BPS working to transition more specialty certifications to adopt this model in the years to come. Recertification has also been improved by harmonizing all specialties to 100 recertification units over 7 years under the recertification by professional development program option. This change will apply to any new (initial or subsequent) recertification cycle year beginning in 2024 and beyond. BPS will continue recognizing recertification by examination as a recertification option in addition to continuing with a modified continuing education option as well. BPS will be one of the first pharmacy organizations to pilot a continuing professional development (CPD) framework for new recertification cycles starting in 2024, with more information coming in 2023. The BPS team and volunteer leadership have aided in the curation of this opportunity, displaying true leadership in assuring competency of board-certified pharmacy specialists. I’d like to recognize the BPS ambassadors, subject matter experts, and staff who have contributed their time and expertise this year. Their thoughtful, informative, and patient-centered service provides great examples of caring. Many of our volunteer leaders have shared perspectives from the communities they are passionate about, including mental health care, LGBTQ+ community care, and others. Finally, thank you to all of the BPS committees and councils who push the organization to represent board-certified pharmacists in the best way possible. We’ve met the goals of our strategic plan and it’s been an important year for BPS – thank you to everyone involved in making this happen! While my term as the chair of BPS was completed on December 31, 2022, I look forward to working with our 2023 chair, Ruth Nemire, and chair-elect, Cyrine Haidar, in guiding BPS in the new year. A Message from the

BPS Executive Director

A

s 2022 ends and I reflect on the year, there are many things I am grateful for in addition to the many accomplishments that BPS has enjoyed.

The primary thing I am grateful for is the contribution of over one thousand volunteers who contributed their time, talent, and expertise to BPS. These volunteer leaders include the BPS Board of Directors, specialty councils, item writers, and a multitude of panelists for various activities across all specialties. Each one of these individuals contributes to the BPS mission, which is to improve patient care by promoting the recognition and value of specialized training, knowledge, and skills in pharmacy and specialty board certification of pharmacists. The tremendous efforts of our volunteers when combined with our resolute staff also led to many accomplishments in 2022. One of those accomplishments was the work to begin offering BPS certification examinations on a continuous basis starting in 2023. This sounds like a straightforward process, but there are many steps involved. In 2023, four specialties (Cardiology Pharmacy, Nuclear Pharmacy, Psychiatric Pharmacy and Oncology Pharmacy) will move to continuous testing, with the others to follow over the next few years. This change should help candidates prepare and test on a timetable that works better for them, and we look forward to the time when all specialties will be available year-round. (Please check the BPS Candidates guide for more details.) Another major accomplishment in 2022 were the plans to incorporate elements of continuing professional development (CPD) into the BPS recertification process, starting for newly certified and individuals who

recertify in 2024. This will be the first large-scale pilot of CPD in the U.S. This decision follows a number of key discussions around this topic, including a consensus conference held in June 2022 by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) to bridge the gap between pharmacy education and practice. There was strong support for CPD from conference attendees, who represented most national pharmacy associations and other key stakeholders including BPS leadership and staff. In September 2022, the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) lent global support to this concept, as that organization approved a statement on CPD during their global conference in Seville, Spain.

BPS also anticipates the receipt of a petition to recognize pain management pharmacy as a specialty and recently announced that it will conduct a job analysis in pharmacoinformatics to begin to explore that area as a pharmacy specialty.

The Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Specialty Council met in St. Louis for examination development activities.

BPS staff members are also active participants in the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) CPD Subcommittee to review current resources and implementation models. The CPD concept has been discussed in pharmacy for well over a decade, with conceptual framework for pharmacists’ professional development and the implications for future planning being discussed by Rouse and Maddux in 2010.1 What does this CPD pilot mean for certificants? This means that the CPD program will allow greater flexibility to self-curate learning activities based upon the pharmacist’s reflections on their own needs. This will not eliminate the assessed continuing education that is part of the current recertification process although that requirement has been reduced by approximately 20% with advent of the CPD requirement. BPS realizes that professional development takes place in multiple ways, including precepting, teaching, workplace activities and volunteerism to name just a few. This pilot will also phase in these activities for those pharmacists who have recertification dates after 2024.

In conclusion, 2022 has been a remarkably busy year; the activities listed above represent just a few of the major accomplishments. It remains an honor and a privilege to serve such a dedicated group of individuals who remain at the leading edge of patient care around the world. I am grateful for everyone who is part of the BPS process. References 1. Rouse MJ, Maddux MS. Conceptual framework for pharmacists’ professional development: implications for future planning. BPS Activities in the U.S. and Abroad Exploring New Pharmacy Specialties

B

PS guides the discussion, evolution, direction, and recognition of pharmacist board certification in the profession. In 2022, there were 13 recognized pharmacy specialties and over 57,600 active certifications in the U.S. and abroad. In 2023, BPS will launch the Emergency Medicine Pharmacy examination program. At the end of 2022, BPS was reviewing and evaluating 2 additional specialty areas for recognition, both of which were in various stages of development: Pain Management Pharmacy and Pharmacoinformatics. Certification program development is a formal process that starts with defining the scope and purpose of the certification program, typically through a process called job analysis (sometimes called a role delineation study or practice analysis in health care certifications). In a job analysis, the tasks performed and the competencies (i.e., the knowledge, skills, and abilities) required by professionals in the specialty practice area are identified. The competencies that are identified and validated through a job analysis comprise the examination content outline, which serves as a delineation of the certification scope and the blueprint for the examination. The job analysis process is a mixed-methods approach that consists of focus groups and validation surveys. The process starts with interviews and panel meetings with the job analysis panel, which is comprised of subject matter experts in that specialty practice area who deliberate and define the specialty practice setting, relevant competencies, tasks performed, and the linkage between the tasks and competencies. Then, a validation survey is conducted wherein a large group of subject matter experts complete a survey to validate the defined competencies. This foundational step in the exam design and development process provides a link between the specialty practice setting and the content of the assessment. The job analysis helps to ensure relevance, validity, and defensibility for a certification program. If a job analysis for a potential new specialty area yield results that suggest the area should be recognized as a

specialty practice in pharmacy, BPS issues a call for a petition for a new specialty recognition. For a new specialty to be recognized by BPS, the petition must address in detail each of the criteria deemed necessary for the creation of a new specialty: need, demand, number/time, specialized knowledge, specialized functions, education and training, and transmission of knowledge. When a petition is submitted to BPS, it is made available for public review and comment. BPS reviews public comments and renders a decision on the petition. Emergency Medicine Pharmacy: In February 2020, BPS announced Emergency Medicine Pharmacy as a new pharmacy practice specialty. In December 2020, BPS announced the appointments to the Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Specialty Council. The specialty council members, led by Chair Chris Edwards, have been steadfast in constructing a new examination. In November 2022, BPS announced that the Emergency Medicine Pharmacy certification examination will be administered for the first time in 2023. Pain Management Pharmacy: After the completion of the job analysis on pain management pharmacy in 2021, the BPS Board of Directors voted to issue a call to the profession for a petition to recognize pain management pharmacy as a specialty in October 2021. Once BPS receives the petition to recognize pain management pharmacy as a BPS specialty, the board will complete its review and render a decision within 6 months. If approved, a council regarding a pain management pharmacy specialty would be established, a new job analysis would be conducted, and the process to develop the examination would begin. Pharmacoinformatics: In October 2022, the BPS Board of Directors voted to conduct a job analysis in pharmacoinformatics for 2022–2023. A call for applications will be issued for individuals actively engaged in pharmacoinformatics who are interested in being considered for appointment to the job analysis panel. The primary goal of the panel will be to draft an inventory of domains and subdomains related to the role, which will be validated via a survey administered to pharmacists practicing in the area.

current licensure/registration in pharmacy. Implementation of the pilot CPD recertification framework will go into effect in 2024 and apply to board-certified pharmacists certified in 2024 or beginning a new seven-year recertification cycle in 2024. The new framework will then be applied to each certification and recertification cycle

n April 2022, BPS released a request for proposal (RFP) to provide a professional development programs (PDP) for the recertification of board-certified pharmacists in each of the 14 recognized BPS specialties. The RFP outlines an update to the existing recertification pathways to include continuing professional development (CPD). This RFP concerns the assessed continuing pharmacy education (CPE) component of the PDP, not the CPD component. BPS will announce the approved professional development BPS will communicate implementation steps with all stakeholders in 2023. program providers in early 2023. Recertification, which is required every 7 years, is a process by which a board-certified pharmacist demonstrates maintenance of a defined level of contemporary knowledge and skills in the respective specialty and attests to

until it is applicable to all board-certified pharmacists by 2030. Beginning in 2024, the assessment of contemporary knowledge and skills will be accomplished through one of two recertification pathways.

The Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) voted in 2022 for the elimination of the higher education transcript requirement for certification candidates in Australia, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore, allowing verification through a publicly available database which requires higher education for an active license for registration. This change will be implemented in January 2023 for pharmacist candidates who practice in Australia, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore and will align with a verification process for pharmacists in Canada and the U.S. The BPS Board Eligibility Taskforce reviewed and confirmed that databases in Australia, Canada, Saudi Arabia,

Singapore, and the U.S. meet the standards set to verify a pharmacist’s license or registration as a component of the eligibility requirement for BPS certification. Applicants who believe their country meet the criteria may request BPS review by confirm that (1) the country requires secondary education from a university, college, school, or faculty of pharmacy as a requirement for licensure or registration; and (2) the country has a public website that verifies a pharmacist is currently licensed or registered within that jurisdiction to practice. More information on the application process can be found in the BPS Candidates Guide. Additional information for applicants outside of the U.S. and Canada can be found here. he BPS Employer Advisory Council (EAC) advises the BPS Board and staff on strategic matters that affect, or potentially affect, employers of board-certified pharmacists. The EAC members represent different employment systems, including integrated health systems, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense, academic medical centers, and the U.S. Public Health Service. In 2022 the council, chaired by past BPS Board Chair Karen Gunning, continued growing the online Employer Toolkit. The toolkit is accessible on the BPS website and provides employers with resources to promote the value and impact of board certification. New additions to the Toolkit in 2022 include several infographics: “10 Ways to Recognize Pharmacists Who Achieve BPS Board Certification,” “Employer Support of Board-Certified Pharmacists in the Workplace,” and “Employers Benefit from Pharmacist Certification, Too!” Sample job descriptions for recruiting board-certified pharmacists were also added to the toolkit. A social media campaign launched in November 2022 to highlight employers and institutions that support pharmacists in pursuit of board certification. The EAC made progress on the following strategic charges during 2022: • D evelop case studies and testimonials of pharmacists in various settings that show how certification contributes to their value as a pharmacist and pharmacy leader.

n 2022, the BPS Branding & Marketing Taskforce led the charge of expanding the BPS Ambassadors program. The BPS Ambassador program initially launched in 2021 with three ambassadors. In 2022, the BPS Ambassador program received 72 applications from board-certified pharmacists interested in sharing their stories and perspectives on the value of BPS certification. The task force selected five board-certified pharmacists to serve as 2022–2024 BPS ambassadors. The selected ambassadors will share their personal and professional stories about how certification has contributed to their value as a pharmacist in practice and professional advancement. Videos from the ambassadors will be featured on the BPS website and social media platforms.

As a result of a brand audit and user feedback, the BPS Brand and Marketing Taskforce has started preliminary efforts to redesign and restructure the BPS website. In August 2022, the task force issued a RFP seeking vendors to enhance the functionality of the BPS website by making it more mobile responsive and user-friendly. The website redesign is planned for 2023. Laura Gordon

The task force and BPS staff successfully launched the BPS Newly Certified Pharmacist Toolkit and the Board-Certified Pharmacist’s Welcome Packet. These resources offer newly certified pharmacists information and resources to promote and maintain their new BPS credentials. Newly certified pharmacists will be equipped with social media graphics to celebrate their new achievement in addition to background information that will support them in sharing information about BPS Certification, such as how to promote your credential, and historical information about BPS. In March 2022, BPS relaunched its podcast series, The BPS Board-Certified Pharmacist Podcast. With this relaunch, BPS has increased its distribution of the podcast across multiple podcast streaming platforms to increase availability for listeners to access the new podcast episodes. The BPS Board-Certified Pharmacist Podcast can be found on podcast streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, and Google Podcasts.

BPS announced the establishment of the Warren E. Weaver/Richard P. Penna Award as part of the BPS 40th anniversary celebration. The award recipient must be an individual or patient care organization who has advanced health quality and/or patient care by promoting the recognition and value of specialized training, knowledge, and skills in pharmacy and the BPS Board Certification of pharmacists. Nominations for the Weaver/Penna Award were solicited separately for patient care organizations and individual persons, and an award is provided to one recipient in each category at the discretion of the BPS Board of Directors. “This year’s awardees truly reflect the purpose and intent of the Weaver/Penna Award: to recognize those going above and beyond to provide patient care and further the pharmacy profession through certification. James Ponto and the Miami Cancer Institute Pharmacy Program personify the commitment to learning, service, and pharmacy that is at the heart of the mission of the Board of Pharmacy Specialties,” said 2022 Chair-Elect Ruth E. Nemire, PharmD, EdD. Patient Care Organization Category Award The Miami Cancer Institute is a destination cancer center approaching its 5th year in southern Florida. The institute provides high-quality cancer care and access to clinical trials for patients in the tri-county area in which it is located. Miami Cancer Institute sees about 1,200 patient visits daily and provides care to cancer patients seven days a week, including holidays. The institute serves patients through both the infusion center and the dedicated oncology, hematology, and transplant inpatient units at Baptist Hospital Miami,

Therapeutics committee. The oncology pharmacists are medication experts, with weekly pharmacy lectures and monthly multidisciplinary education for advanced practice providers and nurses. In addition to the clinical services that the board-certified pharmacists provide, the Operations Team has several staff who are BPS Board-Certified Sterile Compounding Pharmacists (BCSCP); one of these now leads the Compounding Quality Assurance Program for the entire health care system. The team has standardized the policies and procedures for cleanrooms, optimized competency for the pharmacist and technician staff, and most recently, participated in an experiential learning site for technician students within the health system to address the staff shortage.

Another achievement includes Miami Cancer Institute’s pharmacy technicians advancing their knowledge and professional growth through additional certifications from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). The Oncology Pharmacy team has achieved 2 PTCB-certified technicians within the past year. The Miami Cancer Institute pharmacy team is internally motivated to be the best for the patients they serve. Additionally, the team is motivated to be active within professional organizations at the local, state, and national levels. The pharmacy team has participated in over 50 presentations and 20 publications and research posters. Staff have also held numerous leadership positions in pharmacy and cancer organizations over the past 3 years. “We are thrilled to receive the Weaver/Penna Award in recognition of the Miami Cancer Institute pharmacy team’s diligent commitment to the profession and our patients,” said Madeline Camejo, Chief Pharmacy Officer of Baptist Health. “Our pharmacy team has a wealth of experience [which is] critical to the day-today activities. Additionally, the team has the drive to maintain a certification that encourages the long-term development of evidence-based practices.” The presentation of the BPS Weaver/Penna Award to Miami Cancer Institute Pharmaceutical Department took place in May 2022 at their facility in Miami, FL. Individual Category Award The recipient of the Weaver/Penna Award in the individual category is James Ponto, MS, RPh, BCNP, FASHP, FAPhA, Emeritus Clinical Professor at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. “Over the past several decades, I’ve seen the tremendous growth of board certification and I’m proud of the role that I played in the expansion of BPS specialties and the overall number of board-certified pharmacists. I am humbled and honored to receive this award in recognition of my dedication to pharmacist development and advancement of the profession as a whole,” said Ponto.

2022 BPS Board of Directors Chair Marianne Ivey, Left, and BPS Executive Director Bill Ellis, Right, presented James Ponto, Center, with the 2022 Weaver/Penna Award.

Ponto has maintained an outstanding career with a commitment to building the foundation for and promoting the value of pharmacist board certification. Ponto was one of 63 pharmacists who passed the first BPS exam in Nuclear Pharmacy in 1982, the first BPS specialty certification offered. Ponto subsequently recertified every 7 years and is among a handful of colleagues who have continuously maintained their board certification since the inception of the first BPS specialty. Ponto was also an engaged member of the Nuclear Pharmacy Specialty Council after becoming board-certified, serving 2 terms: 1982–1985 and 1986–1989. During his time as chair of the Nuclear Pharmacy Specialty Council, Ponto led many discussions with the specialty council and the BPS Board of Directors regarding the duration of board certification and ultimately supported 7-year time-limited certification rather than enduring certification. In his role as chair, Ponto developed the pathways for recertification (i.e., successfully passing the recertification examination or completing necessary continued professional development requirements). Ponto was engaged in petitions for specialty recognition of Nutrition Support Pharmacy and Pharmacotherapy through his role as chair of the Nuclear Pharmacy Specialty Council.

Ponto was further engaged with the inaugural Nutrition Support Specialty Council as a nonspecialist for 1989–1992 and 1992–1995 terms immediately following completion of his term on the Nuclear Pharmacy Specialty Council. He assisted in developing eligibility criteria, policies, procedures, and he worked to establish and implement the first Nutrition Support certification exam. Ponto continued to participate in the growth of the recognized BPS specialties through his time on the BPS Board of Directors. From 2013 to 2018, he led the evaluation and approval of six new specialty areas. During his two terms, his service included proposing the concept for the Weaver/Penna Award as a part of the recognition of the 40th anniversary of BPS.

pharmacist board certification. As the community of board-certified pharmacists grows, it is important to pursue qualitative and quantitative research topics to fully explore the process of pharmacy specialization and the diverse practice settings and patient populations with whom pharmacists engage,” said BPS Board Chair Marianne F. Ivey, PharmD, MPH, FASHP, FFIP. BPS is proud to recognize these researchers and support completion of their work.

The presentation of the BPS Weaver/Penna Award to James Ponto took place in San Antonio, TX at the APhA Annual Meeting & Exposition in March 2022. BPS offers congratulations to these deserving recipients of the Warren E. Weaver/Richard P. Penna Awards for 2022.

PGY2 Pharmacy Residency Research Grant Recipients

B

PS is proud to announce the recipients of the fifth annual Post-Graduate Year 2 (PGY2) Pharmacy Residency Research Seed Grants as Amanda Charlton, PharmD, and Timothy Jones, PharmD. This program offers up to two $5,000 seed grants to PGY2 pharmacy residents who design projects that evaluate the impact of pharmacist board certification on medication-related outcomes for patients, demonstrate the value of board certification for pharmacist specialists to key stakeholder groups (i.e., patients, payers, physicians, and other health care providers), or contribute to credentialing or privileging of pharmacist specialists across practice settings. The grant will go toward the completion of their research projects. “We look forward to seeing the findings of the two research teams and what insights they acquire about

BPS 2022 Annual Report

Amanda Charlton, PharmD, PGY2 pharmacotherapy resident at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Jerry H. Hodge School of Pharmacy, was recognized for her proposal, “Distribution and Accessibility of Board-Certified Pharmacists.” Charlton will conduct research in collaboration with Krystal K. Haase, PharmD, BCPS, BCCCP, FCCP; Eric J. MacLaughlin, PharmD, BCPS, FASHP, FCCP; and Jeremy H. Johnson, PharmD.  The proposal submitted by Charlton stated the following: Board-certified pharmacists (BCPs) are uniquely qualified to improve medication-related outcomes for patients through advanced practice roles. Despite pharmacists being coined as the “most readily

accessible health care provider,” a pilot study by our group suggests that BCPs are not routinely accessible to patients who reside outside of large metropolitan areas. We found that in Texas, 98% of BCPs practice in urban areas, with 70% of counties having no certified pharmacists. However, it is unknown whether similar patterns of disparity exist in other states. All-cause mortality rates are higher for patients who reside in rural areas of the United States, and lack of access to health care providers is one of three major explanatory factors for this difference. Characterizing the geographic representation of BCPs on a national scale would be of value in determining the degree to which they are accessible to all patients. Furthermore, comparing states based on degree of accessibility may identify determinants beyond geographies, such as health care policy, provider legislation, and compensation that drive board certification, particularly outside of metropolitan areas. Identifying drivers and barriers is critical to focusing future policy, advocacy, and credentialing efforts for pharmacists. Our long-term goal is to ensure that all patients have access to comprehensive medication management services provided by appropriately credentialed pharmacists. The objective of this application is to characterize the current accessibility of BCP and to determine factors that drive accessibility patterns at the state level. We hypothesize that accessibility patterns vary by state and are associated with specific geographical, policy, practice, educational, and legislative characteristics. Our rationale is that identification and characterization of patterns, particularly for highly successful states, will help better inform future efforts in legislation, advocacy, training, and credentialing. Timothy Jones, PharmD, PGY2 critical care pharmacy resident at Augusta University Medical Center, was selected for his proposal, “Impact of Board Certification on Quality of Care Provided by Evening Critical Care Pharmacist Services.” Jones will conduct research in collaboration with Andrea Sikora, PharmD,

MSCR, BCCCP, FCCM; Kelli Keats, PharmD, BCCCP; Aaron Chase, PharmD; and Christy Forehand, PharmD, BCCCP, FCCM. The proposal submitted by Jones stated the following: Critical care pharmacists are considered essential members of the health care team; however, justification of new positions, especially in the evening or weekend shifts, remains a significant challenge. Workload of intensive care unit (ICU) clinicians has come to the forefront as a concern due its relationship with poor quality of patient care and clinician burnout. Lack of clinical pharmacist positions in non-daytime, non-weekday shifts is a critical gap. The purpose of this project is to investigate how board certification in critical care affects the number and intensity of interventions provided during evening shift services. The central hypothesis is that board certification increases both the number and intensity of interventions that can be provided by the clinical pharmacist. This hypothesis will be tested through 2 specific aims: (1) evaluate the quantity and intensity of documented interventions performed by a board certified critical care pharmacist (BCCCP) and non–board-certified second-shift pharmacists

at an academic medical center and (2) determine the effect of a BCCCP-credentialed pharmacist on patient safety and clinical decision-making assistance in non-daytime shift services. Interventions are tracked through an electronic health record system as part of routine standard-of-care. Demonstrating increased value of board certification for evening shift services has significant potential to improve justification efforts for clinical pharmacist position in non-daytime, non-weekday shifts. “BPS is pleased to recognize Dr. Charlton and Dr. Jones for their research efforts, which support the growing body of literature surrounding pharmacist board certification. We were fortunate to receive many quality proposals for funding and thank the other teams who submitted proposals,”  said BPS Director of Professional Affairs Ellie LaNou, PharmD, BCPS.   More information about previous awardees and the PGY2 Pharmacy Residency Research Seed Grants program can be found at www.bpsweb.org/bps-seedgrant. BPS Recognized for Certification Excellence In January 2022, the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) awarded three specialty certifications under BPS for compliance to the NCCA Standards for the Accreditation of Certification Programs: Cardiology Pharmacy (BCCP), Infectious Diseases Pharmacy (BCIDP), and Compounded Sterile Preparations Pharmacy (BCSCP). NCCA also reaccredited the Geriatric Pharmacy specialty certification (BCGP). BPS now holds NCCA accreditation for 12 specialty certification programs. More information about NCCA and ISO-IEC

In June 2022, the Department of Defense (DOD) reconized BPS as a credentialing opportunity for service members; BPS is now included on the Credentialing Opportunities On-Line (COOL) website. 13 out of 14 BPS credentials met the DOD credentialing standards required for inclusion on COOL. (Emergency Medicine Pharmacy is not listed because testing will not begin until 2023.) Each military service branch has their own service-specific COOL programs designed to match military occupations to civilian credentials. The DOD COOL webpage is a portal for the individual military COOL programs, as each branch of service disseminates the information on their own COOL websites and offers variations on the information for their specific branches. Review The Soldiers Guide to Certification infographic for more details. In August 2022, the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) granted the Board-Certified Nuclear Pharmacist (BCNP) specialty with continued recognition as the credential satisfies requirements for authorized nuclear pharmacists under NRC Regulations Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 35.55. The requirements under this statute affirm a professional standard of education, training, and professional experience. The NRC regularly re-evaluates which programs meet their rigorous standards.
