3rd Annual Golf Tournament – A Great Success By Linda Medina, Education Foundation The GAHCC Education Foundation raised over $17,000 for scholarships at this year’s 3rd Annual Scholarship Golf Classic held on October 23rd at the Falconhead Golf Club. The 2009 Title Sponsor for the event was Walmart. In attendance at the sold out event were corporate sponsors and community leaders, including Mayor Lee Leffingwell, Judge Samuel T. Introducing Cole Harmonson, New Chair of the Access to Capital Committee By Nayeli Gallegos, Economic Development With the goal of assisting the GAHCC in fulfilling its mission of building its members’ wealth, the Access to Capital Committee was created last year under the leadership of board member Will Penny. The Access to Capital Committee created an approach named “Triage” to assist GAHCC members in pursuit of their capital needs. This year, more than 15 individuals or organizations have benefited from the financial assistance received from our committee members. Additionally, the Access to Capital Committee hosted two events this year where a panel of experts talked about the financial resources and programs available to small businesses. The GAHCC gives special thanks to Will Penny for his vision and commitment in launching this innovative GAHCC program. In the month of October, Cole Harmonson took on the role as the new Chair of the Access to Capital Committee. He will continue to lead the committee towards creating programs that align and support the GAHCC’s mission. His goal is also to work closely with the small business incubator, Emerging Enterprises, to ensure that all the businesses going through the program have an opportunity to meet their capital acquisition needs. Meet Cole Harmonson: Cole Harmonson is Co-founder, President and CEO of Far West Capital (FWC). Since 2007, FWC has provided working capital to growing companies by purchasing or lending on Accounts Receivable and Inventory. FWC serves companies based in Texas with needs of less than $5 million. Prior to FWC, Cole worked for State Bank and the National Bank of Texas in Fort Worth. Emerging Enterprises hosts a “How to do Business with Walmart” Seminar By Monica Willey, HTIA The morning of October 13, 2009, Frank Machuca, Walmart store manager, came to Emerging Enterprises, the GAHCC business incubator, to discuss the potential opportunities to engage in business with Walmart. The presentations covered information about Walmart’s Supplier Diversity Program, how to become a Walmart supplier/service provider, and provided the contacts to become a local Walmart supplier/service provider. The Walmart Supplier Diversity focus is to identify new Minority and Women Business Enterprises (MWBEs) and to increase MWBE’s opportunities. A Walmart benefit to this initiative is many MWBE suppliers have unique insights into the wants and needs of the ever-changing customer base. Another advantage is providing a continued commitment to the locally owned business partners in the communities that we serve. Walmart recognizes the ever-changing make up of their customer base and makes it a point to keep the supplier base evolving and more diverse. At the seminar, the emphasis was placed on the potential opportunities in the regional product market. Walmart stated that there is still room for more competitive suppliers. If you are interested in conducting business with Walmart, review this checklist first. “Emerging Enterprises” ofrece el Seminario: “Cómo Hacer Negocios con Walmart” Traducción de Carolina Modesto Frank Machuca, gerente general de una de las tiendas de Walmart, visitó Emerging Enterprises la mañana del 13 de octubre del 2009, para conversar acerca de las oportunidades que tienen los negocios locales de hacer intercambios comerciales con Walmart. En dicha reunión se ofreció información acerca del Programa para los Proveedores de Diversidad Étnica de Walmart, los pasos a dar para convertirse en un proveedor de servicios y con quién se debe comunicar. Este programa de Walmart se enfoca en identificar nuevos negocios dentro de la comunidad de empresas donde las mujeres o las minorías son los dueños (Minority and Women Business Enterprises – MWBEs); además de aumentar el área que abarcan dichos negocios (MWBE). Uno de los beneficios de esta iniciativa es que muchos proveedores de MWBE tienen una perspicacia única acerca de los deseos y necesidades de la clientela, la cual es siempre cambiante. A Brief History of the Tejano Monument Provided by CasaBella Architects In the summer of 2000, Dr. Cayetano Barrera, of McAllen, Texas, was touring the newly renovated Capitol complex when he realized that there was no mention of the Hispanic forefathers of this State. The more he looked, the more amazed he was that not one “Tejano” name appeared anywhere among historic accounts of Texas. Soon after, Dr. Barrera and several of his friends, including Andres Tijerina, an award-winning historian, created the Tejano Monument Committee. The sole purpose of this committee was to raise funds for constructing the first monument, on the State Capitol grounds, commemorating Spanish and Mexican influence in the history of Texas. What followed was intense work by both the Tejano Monument Committee and the State legislature to make this monument a reality. The committee soon hired Armando Hinojosa, from Laredo, Texas, to design the monument. The monument will include several figures that depict early contributions of Tejanos in our State history. The figures represent a Spanish explorer, a 19th century cowboy (vaquero), longhorns, a young couple with baby, and a young girl and boy with a lamb and goat in tow. The monument will include five bronze interpretive plaques with narratives of the early contributions of Tejanos in our State history. In 2002, Jaime Beaman, principal of CasaBella Architects, Austin, Texas was asked to be the architect of the overall design. His firm has been assisting the Tejano Monument Committee and Armando Hinojosa in the refinement of the final monument design, as well as the technical execution of the monument’s construction. This year, Governor Rick Perry signed into law the location of the monument on the “historic grounds” of the Capitol complex. The location will be just east of the main entrance off of 11th Street. Pending is the final approval of the design by the Texas Preservation Board, chaired by Governor Perry. (It is the hope of all that the monument will be completed before the end of 2010.) CasaBella Architects is an architecture firm that was established in 1989. The two principals of the firm are Jaime Beaman (Mexico) and Jaime Palomo (El Salvador). Notable projects for the Latino community include the Mexican American Cultural Center and El Buen Samaritano Episcopal Mission.

Una Breve Historia sobre el Monumento Tejano En el verano del 2000, el Dr. Cayetano Barrera, de McAllen, Texas, visitaba el recientemente renovado edificio del Capitolio, cuando se dio cuenta que no había ninguna mención de los antecesores hispanos de nuestro Estado. Cuanto más buscaba, más se asombraba que no había ningún nombre “Tejano” en las crónicas históricas de Texas. Después de esta visita, el Dr. Barrera y sus amigos, incluyendo al muy conocido Historiador Andres Tijerina, formaron el “Comité del Monumento Tejano”, con el principal propósito de recaudar fondos para construir el primer monumento en los jardines del Capitolio que conmemore la influencia Española y Mexicana en la historia de Texas. Lo que siguió fue un gran esfuerzo por parte del Comité del Monumento Tejano y Legisladores del Estado para lograr que este monumento se hiciera una realidad. Austin Ad Fed Hosts Major Hispanic Marketing Symposium Provided by Univison Austin The Austin Advertising Federation is hosting its first annual Hispanic Marketing Symposium (HMS) on November 11th, 11am2 pm, at the AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center at UT Austin.

David Davis, Recipient of the DRI Lifetime Community Service Award By Nayeli Gallegos, Economic Development Congratulations to GAHCC member, David M. Davis, owner of US Mexico Consulting and Founding Shareholder of Davis & Wilkerson, P.C., as the a recipient of the DRI Lifetime Community Service Award. DRI - The Voice of the Defense Bar is an international membership organization of over 22,000 attorneys defending the interests of businesses and individuals in civil litigation. On October 8th, at the DRI Annual Meeting in Chicago, Davis was recognized for his “community and public service activities and commitment to improving the social well-being of the general public by initiating and participating in programs that have a positive impact on his community and the general public”. He was recognized for his leadership efforts on behalf of people with diabetes through the American Diabetes Association, people with heart defects through the Championship Hearts Foundation, and his efforts to eradicate polio through Rotary International. Jeanne McLeod, GAHCC Ambassador of the Month By Selina Aguirre, Membership Coordinator The Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber Ambassadors are the goodwill “arm” of the Chamber and thus are charged with extending the hand of friendship to new, current and future members alike. The Ambassadors promote retention by assisting members in maximizing their Chamber membership, welcoming new members and attending ribbon cuttings and other Chamber events overall. The Chamber also relies on the Ambassadors to serve as a communication link between the Chamber and its members by relaying information between members, identifying member concerns, and garnering support for the Chamber. An Ambassador of the Month is awarded each month and is recognized in the GAHCC Noticias e-newsletter and monthly Power Networking Breakfast. Additionally, one hard-working Ambassador will be awarded the Ambassador of the Year and will be recognized at the GAHCC Annual Banquet. The GAHCC would like to recognize Jeanne McLeod as the Ambassador of the Month. Jeanne was born and raised in San Antonio and has been in the Austin area for over ten years. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. Jeanne has been an employee of the Hertz Corporation for over seven years in various management positions. She currently is in charge of the passenger vehicle rental solutions for the Temple, Killeen and Austin area. She is also an Ambassador for the Round Rock Chamber as well as the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo. Jeanne belongs to the Sertoma Club helping children with hearing deficits. Hays CISD Officially Unveils Adult Community Education By Gina Garcia, GAHCC Member Hays CISD will open its doors to evening, day and morning classes ranging from “Save My Living Room” and “Social Networking” to “Being a Good Role Model for Your Child.” Courses will begin October 12, 2009 at Simon Middle School, 3829 E. FM 150, in Kyle, Texas. In addition to serving the general population, Hays CISD has included courses for the Young at Heart (over 62 years of age) with classes like “Everyday Spanish” and “Computer and Internet Use”. These courses are conveniently offered in the day time. For the Spanish speaking community, courses like “Ingles Para Todo Momento”, “Nino de Buenestar/Nino de Buen Salud”, “Fundamentos de Computadoras” and “Como Funciona el Dinero” are offered. To help promote attendance, childcare is being provided in the daytime. We encourage everyone to visit www.hayscisd.net/CommunityEd/ to view the catalog and register for a class. GAHCC Education Foundation hosts AISD Hispanic Futures Conference “Graduate Ready: College, Career, Life” By Linda Medina, Education Foundation The GAHCC Education Foundation will partner with the Austin Independent School District Department of Diversity and Intercultural Relations to host the 2nd Hispanic Futures Conference for the 2009-2010 school year. The conference will take place on December 5th at Travis High School located at 1211 East Oltorf Street. The conference will start at 8:15 a.m. with breakfast and registration. The theme of the event is “Graduate Ready: College, Career, Life”. Hispanic students and parents from all Austin schools are invited to attend the conference. At the conference, speakers and exhibits will provide information, materials and hands-on experiences that will help to advance academic achievement. GAHCC Mentorship Program Visits St. Edward’s University By Brittany Brunson, Media and Education Bright and early on a Saturday morning, high school students move slowly as they enter their school. A few are there to make up absences and a few for cheerleading practice; but the students that catch your eye are grabbing hats off each other’s heads, joking about not wearing the appropriate college attire. It might be the morning of the UT/OU game, but the GAHCC Mentorship Program at Eastside Memorial High School is headed to St. Edwards University! You can hear the murmurs and awed voices as the bus makes its way to the top of the hill that houses St. Edward’s University. The view is fantastic; the highest point in the city provides a view of downtown that you don’t get to enjoy every day. As the group of students and their mentors walk around campus, led by a Religion major in her senior year, they hear about the history of the campus that was founded in 1885. The students compare the main building, constructed in the late 1800’s, to Hogwarts School in the Harry Potter series. At this point the mentors can tell that their mentees are quite engaged. The students are equally impressed with the statue of St. Edward that had to be fastened to a roof pedestal so that university students would not dress him up in modern garb. At the end of the tour, the guide tells the students that this winter there is an opportunity to come and stay the night in a dorm on campus and attend class the next day. This, coupled with the knowledge that St. Edwards offers hefty grants to Hispanic students, catches the attention of a few students. Look out GAHCC, the Mentorship Program is paving the way for students from Eastside to attend St. Edwards University!

De forma similar, los estudiantes han quedado impresionados con la estatua de San Eduardo, el cual tuvieron que fijar en un pedestal sobre el techo para que los estudiantes universitarios no lo vistieran con atuendos contemporáneos. Al final de la gira, el guía les explica a los estudiantes que durante este invierno habrá una oportunidad de quedarse durante una noche en el dormitorio para estudiantes y asistir a clases al día siguiente. Esto, junto a la noticia de que la Universidad de St. Edward ofrece becas a estudiantes hispanos, les cautiva la atención. GAHCC tendrá que ponerse en alerta, ya que el Programa de Mentores está abriendo caminos para que los estudiantes de la preparatoria Eastside asistan a la Universidad de St. Edward.
