CENTOS 5 INSTALLATION TUTORIAL By: Razif Jemaat [email protected] 1.0 Introduction This tutorial is created to show the installation process for CentOS 5.4. There are many installations manual in the Internet and this is just one simple tutorial that maybe can be used for learning purpose. This installation is done using Sun VirtualBox, so some of the customization or configuration maybe different if it is done in actual PC or server. The installation is done using GUI mode and the system that used in this installation is GNOME desktop. All the images and sentences are created by the author except for those mentioned. As this is a simple and basic tutorial, if there are any errors, comments or suggestion, please let me know and e-mail me at [email protected].


CENTOS 5 INSTALLATION TUTORIAL By: Razif Jemaat [email protected] 2.0 Server Deployment 2.1 CentOS Installation i. Before the installation, ensure that the system is set to boot on the DVD drive. The installation that will be shown was using the CentOS 5.4 Installation DVD and can be downloaded from http://www.centos.org. ii. Insert the DVD into the DVD drive and boot on it. iii. The CentOS installation option page will appear. User can choose to install in graphical mode or text mode (CLI-mode). In this case, just click enter to start graphical mode installation. iv. The CentOS installation page will appear. User will be asked either want to test the DVD or skip to continue to the installation. Users can click OK to check for any error on the DVD. In this case, click Skip to continue to the installation.

It will erase all the >[email protected] ix. To fresh install, select Remove all partitions on selected drives and create default layout. All partitions in the disk will be erased. User also can create custom layout for the partition, to set the size for /boot, / etc. x. The CentOS system can be encrypted using Linux Unified Key Setup (LUKS). Tick Encrypt System to encrypt the CentOS system using LUKS. What is LUKS? LUKS is the standard for Linux hard disk encryption. By providing a standard on-diskformat, it does not only facilitate compatibility among distributions, but also provides secure management of multiple user passwords. In contrast to existing solution, LUKS stores all setup necessary setup information in the partition header, enabling the user to transport or migrate his >[email protected] xi. To proceed with the settings, click Next, then Yes.

If forgotten or lost, the system cannot be loaded after booted. xiii. In this next menu, user can set the network settings for the system. In this tutorial, we put the Hostname manually as testserver.local.

Enter the password for the root (Super User) of the system. Then, click Next. xvii. In this part, user can select the package that required for the server. But, in this case, the system need to be customized more details, so click Customized Now and then click Next.

GNOME Dekstop Environment b. Server applications – DNS, MySQL, Mail server, Webserver c. Internet application – Firefox

CENTOS 5 INSTALLATION TUTORIAL By: Razif Jemaat [email protected] xxii. The installation is finish. Now, click Reboot. xxiii. As setup earlier, the CentOS system is protected by the LUKS. So, enter the LUKS password as setup during the installation configuration process. Then press Enter. xxiv. Wait for the system to load.

There are some details configuration and customization that have been done for the server but not covered in the documentation. But basically, the tutorial is enough for any user or administrator to install and deploy CentOS in their server or workstation.
