INTRODUCTION Pada chapter 10 ini kita akan membahas tentang pengalaman masa kecil. Kalian pasti memiliki cerita atau pengalaman masa kecil kan? Pastinya punya dong. Jika menceritakan masa kecil atau masa lampau dengan menggunakan Bahasa Indonesia itu sudah hal biasa karena Bahasa yang kita gunakan yaitu Bahasa Indonesia. Nah, bagaimana jika mengungkapkan cerita di masa lampau menggunakan bahasa Inggris? Untuk lebih jelasnya simak ilustrasi berikut ini!

This is my childhood story. When I was child, every afternoon I played with my friends in front of my house. We used to play with dolls together. It was so much funI'm a teenager now, so it's rare to play with my friends.

Setelah kita melihat ilustrasi tersebut, seseorang sedang menceritakan masa kecilnya yang sewaktu kecil setiap sore ia bermain dengan teman-temannya didepan rumahnya. Mereka bermain boneka bersama-sama dan itu sangat menyenangkan baginya. Perhatikan susunan kalimat yang digunakan! "When I was child, every afternoon I played with my friends in front of my house." Kalimat tersebut menggunakan was sebagai to be nya untuk menceritakan masa kecilnya. Lalu, apa unsur bahasa yang digunakan dan bagaimana susunan kalimat yang digunakan untuk mengungkapkan cerita masa lalu atau masa lampau seperti ilustrasi tersebut? Unsur bahasa yang digunakan yaitu simple past tense. Jika kita akan menceritakan kejadian yang sedang berlangsung atau sekarang maka menggunakan simple present tense. Akan tetapi jika menceritakan kejadian di masa lalu atau di masa lampau maka menggunakan simple past tense. Untuk materi simple present tense sudah pernah kita bahas pada Chapter 7 : My Uncle Is Zookeeper. Nah untuk chapter 10 kali ini kita akan membahas simple past tense. Simple Past Tense Simple past tense digunakan untuk mengungkapkan atau menceritakan kejadian di masa lalu atau lampau. Seperti dengan yang lainnya, kalimat simple past tense dibagi menjadi kalimat nominal (Nominal Sentences) dan kalimat verbal (Verbal Sentences). Tiap jenis dibagi menjadi 3 yaitu positive, negative, dan interrogative.

Nominal Sentences Nominal sentences/kalimat nominal adalah kalimat yang dikelompokkan berdasarkan fungsi suatu kalimat. Jenis kalimat ini biasa digunakan untuk menjelaskan suatu pihak (subject) dengan kelengkapan-kelengkapan tertentu (complements), yang dapat berupa keterangan sifat (adjective), keterangan kerja (adverb), dan lain-lain. RUMUS : (+) S + to be (was/were) + adjective/adverb He was a superstar. (Dia dulu adalah seorang superstar.) Soto and pizza were my favorite food. (Soto dan pizza dulu adalah makanan favorit saya.) (-) S + to be (was/were) + not + adverb He was not a billionaire. (Dia dulu bukanlah seorang miliarder.) They weren't a famous boy group in the past. (Meraka bukanlah boy grup terkenal di masa lalu.)

(?) To be (was/were) + S + adjective/adverb? Were they home last night? (Apakah mereka berada di rumah tadi malam?) Answer : - Yes, they were (Ya, benar) - No, they were not (Tidak) Was he a chef two years ago? (Apakah dulu dia seorang koki dua tahun lalu?) Answer : - Yes, he was (Ya, benar) - No, he was not (Tidak)

Verbal Sentences Simple past tense dalam bentuk kalimat verbal yaitu suatu kalimat simple past tense yang mengandung kata kerja (verbal). Kata kerja (verb) yang digunakan dalam membentuk kalimat simple past tense (verbal) yaitu kata kerja bentuk kedua (verb 2). Setelah "verb 2" dapat disertai dengan objek atau kata keterangan (adverb). RUMUS : (+) S + verb + (-d/-ed) + O The shop closed at 9 p.m yesterday night. (Toko itu tutup pada jam 9 kemarin malam.) Rara cooked a pan of soup four days ago. (Rara memasak sepanci sup empat hari yang lalu.) (-) S + did not/didn't + V1 + O She didn't finish his homework yesterday. (Dia tidak menyelesaikan pekerjaan rumahnya kemarin.) I didn't go to South Korea last year. (Saya tidak pergi ke Korea Selatan tahun lalu.)

(?) Did + S + V1 + O? Did you eat dimsum? (Apakah kamu makan dimsum?) Answer : - Yes, I did (Ya, Benar) - No, I didn't (Tidak) Did your kite fly high? (Apakah layanganmu terbang tinggi?) Answer : - Yes, I did (Ya, Benar) - No, I didn't (Tidak) NOTE :

Kalimat interrogative juga bisa ditambahkan dengan kata tanya, what atau yang lainnya. What did she take from your bag last night? (Apa yang dia ambil dari tasmu semalam?) When did Lala come to the party? (Kapan Lala datang ke pesta?) Verba bentuk kedua, ada yang berbentuk regular dan irregular.Untuk yang regular ditambah -ed/d, sementara untuk yang irregular antara lain : Begin – Began – Begun - Mulai Come – Came – Come - Datang Drink – Drank – Drunk - Minum Feel – Felt – Felt - Merasakan Fall – Fell – Fallen - Jatuh Fly – Flew – Flown - Terbang Become – Became – Become - Menjadi Buy – Bought – Bought - Membeli Draw – Drew – Drawn - Menggambar

Penanda Waktu Simple Past Tense

Setelah mempelajari struktur teks simple past tense, ada beberapa penanda waktu (time signals) yang biasanya digunakan dalam tense ini adverb of time (keterangan waktu) sebagai berikut: Yesterday (Kemarin) Yesterday, I climbed Mount Merbabu with my friend. (Kemarin, aku mendaki gunung merbabu dengan temanku) Last.... (tadi....) Last year, I participated in a basketball game. (Tahun lalu, saya mengikuti pertandingan basket) This morning (Pagi tadi) I planted flower seeds this morning. (Saya menanam benih bunga pagi ini) ...ago (...yang lalu) I started practice 3 days ago. (Saya memulai praktik 3 hari yang lalu)
