Recycle Anaheim Solid Waste & Recycling Newsletter for Anaheim Residents x Summer 2016

Methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, is produced as organics break down. Assembly Bill 1826 will dramatically reduce landfilled waste and greenhouse gas emissions.

CLEANING OUR AIR BY RECYCLING ORGANICS N

early two-thirds of all waste disposed in California landfills come from businesses, including apartment and condominium complexes. A study by the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery in 2014 found that 43 percent of landfill commercial waste consisted of compostable food scraps, food-soiled paper and landscape waste. Consequently, methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, is produced as organics break down. As a result, Assembly Bill 1826 was adopted. Implementing AB 1826 will dramatically reduce landfilled waste and greenhouse gas emissions. AB 1826 will be implemented in phases based on the amount of generated organic waste. As of April 1, 2016, all restaurants, grocery stores, large venues and food processors that create eight or more cubic yards of organic waste per week are required to begin recycling food scraps, food-soiled paper, landscape and wood waste. Most of this recycling is taking place behind the scenes in kitchens, with landscape crews and on loading docks.

1

Businesses generating four or more cubic yards of organic waste per week will also be required to recycle organics effective Jan. 1, 2017. Beginning Jan. 1, 2019, all businesses that generate four or more cubic yards of solid waste per week will be required to recycle organics. Under this law, businesses include commercial operations, schools, hospitals, and multifamily complexes with five or more units. Multifamily complexes are only required to recycle yard waste and are not required to implement a food-waste diversion program. You can learn more about commercial organics recycling at CalRecycle.ca.gov/recycle/commercial/ organics.

ANAHEIM COMMUNITY PRIDE

POSTER CONTEST WINNERS

arlier this year, we joined Republic Services to host the eighth annual Compost Giveaway at Honda Center. This is our way of thanking Anaheim residents for participating in the city’s green waste recycling program. During this popular annual event, more than 500 residents received compost, which is now being used in yards and gardens across Anaheim. Compost is a valuable mulch or soil amendment because it enriches the earth and conserves irrigation and rain water. You also have the ingredients you need to make your own compost at home! Rather than filling your trash containers you can improve your landscape by creating compost for use in your yard and gardens. Yard trimmings and fruit and vegetable scraps are easy to compost with a backyard compost bin. Earth Machine compost bins and Kitchen Collector buckets are available for purchase for $20 (check or cash) at the City of Anaheim, Department of Public Works, Operations Division. You may reserve your compost bin by calling (714) 765-6883 or emailing [email protected].

ongratulations to the grand prize winners for the third annual Anaheim Community Pride Poster Contest! More than 20,000 students had the opportunity to participate in the contest. Students were asked to create an original, hand-drawn picture that promoted recycling, graffiti-free or litter-free living in our community.

Grand-prize winners were recognized by the Anaheim City Council on June 14, and received a family four-pack of Disneyland Resort Park Hopper tickets donated by the Disneyland Resort. This contest was presented by Anaheim Beautiful and made possible thanks to the generous support of City of Anaheim Department of Public Works, Code Enforcement, Republic Services, Disneyland Resort, West Coast Arborist and Superior.

id you know…one quart of used oil can contaminate one million gallons of water? California’s coastline is one of the state’s most precious natural treasures. The coastal waters are home to a wide variety of unique marine environments that support rich biological communities. Oil spills scar our scenic coast, natural habitats and wildlife.

After you save yourself money by conducting oil changes at home, save the earth by recycling the waste oil and filter. Find a local business that will recycle your oil free of charge by calling 1-800-CLEANUP. For more information, visit earth911.com or call our used oil hotline: (714) 765-4154

KNOW YOUR WATERING DAYS

A

naheim’s watering days have gone from two to three days a week. Homes with addresses ending in an odd number can water Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Homes with addresses ending in an even number can water Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. While California’s drought continues, the extra water day comes after conservation gains and an improved outlook statewide. Since June 2015, Anaheim residents, businesses and the city have

saved 5.2 billion gallons of water, exceeding our state-mandated conservation goal. But we all still need to be mindful about water use and observe the following landscape watering guidelines: Limit watering to eight minutes per station when using standard sprinklers and bubblers. Limit watering to 15 minutes per station when using high-efficiency nozzles. Water before 9:00 a.m. or after 6:00 p.m.

M

any household products that we use contain hazardous chemicals that pose a threat to the public and the environment when improperly managed. Hazardous waste can hurt family members, the environment, trash handlers and landfill workers. It can disrupt wastewater treatment plant operations and cause damage to local waterways and beaches if it is poured down household drains or dumped into storm drains. These items include motor oil, insect spray, bleach and other cleaning products. Steps to reduce your chances of being harmed by hazardous waste:

EARTH FRIENDLY YARD WASTE TIPS • Acceptable types of yard waste: grass, leaves, weeds and vegetation, Christmas trees, twigs and small branches less than 4 inches in diameter and no more than 3 feet long (no palm fronds). • Do not place yard waste in plastic bags. The bags will contaminate the yard waste. • Do not place trash or paper in the brown yard waste container. The smallest amount of trash will contaminate the yard waste. • Cut trimmings into smaller pieces to save room in the yard waste container.

AYUDE A LIMPIAR NUESTRO AIRE RECICLANDO DESECHOS ORGÁNICOS

C
